Ask 411 Movies 08.23.10: The Column That’s Hot, Dead and Spoiler Loaded!
Posted by Leonard Hayhurst on 08.23.2010

From YouTube this week as we continue to look at music videos based on movies we have "Cup of Sorrow" from Faith No More based on Vertigo.

Saw a commercial for the new series "Melissa and Joey" with Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence. Is it me, or is it basically "Who's the Boss?"

We continue to talk about movies where actors die below so there will be spoilers. You've been warned this time, so no bitching.

Q: Leonard, you have to check out Norm MacDonald and Adam Carolla dissecting "Coward of the Country" here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ9fPnzcMHk
-Brian

Thanks for the link. I really enjoyed listening to it. I should do a podcast for the music zone where I just pick apart odd songs.

Q: Cat Cora has a liquor license.
-Sorryguys

A: I believe that's a euphemism. Cactus pointed out she's a lesbian in the comments last week as well. I can still think she's hot. In fact, being a lesbian probably makes her even hotter.

Q: The Three Stooges died in at least one, possibly two shorts (I'm pretty sure they were both Curly ones, too). I distinctly remember one where they finish the episode as angels flying up to heave after a giant explosion (I think it was one when they were in the army), and my memory is probably faulty on this, but I think there was one where they were running away from a hail of bullets, so they take cover in what is revealed to be their graves.
-Vince

A: Eddie G mentioned this too. I guess that counts. They're dead, they're in heaven. To quote Mills Lane, I'll allow it. The below mini-sode doesn't count, because it was a dream by Shemp, but it's got the classic pen that can write under whip cream bit.

Q: Not a big movie expert here, but actors who never died off the top of my head...

Bill Murray (does Groundhog Day count?)
Dan Aykroyd

He he, it's scary how many actors that "Mars Attacks" eliminates...

I had Tom Hanks, but the wife reminded me he dies in "A League of their Own".

Here's a question for ya. Who has died the most in movie?
-Louis

A: Bill Murray dies in Zombieland. I guess his Groundhog Day deaths count too.

Dan Aykroyd takes a television set to the head in Grosse Point Blank, but I don't know if that kills him. A couple people mentioned this in the comments last week too.

Tom Hanks is dead at the end of A League of Their Own, but we don't see him die on screen. He dies in Road to Perdition, Saving Private Ryan and Philadelphia as mentioned in the comments last week.

As for who has died in the most movies, Beerad wrote that Robert DeNiro has died in 14 movies. Those movies are Bloody Mama, Bang the Drum Slowly, Mean Streets, Brazil, The Mission, Cape Fear, This Boy's Life, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Heat, The Fan, Jackie Brown, Great Expectations, 15 Minutes and Hide and Seek. That list comes from an article at Premiere.com I found.

Q: Has Danny Glover ever died in a film?
-Nick

A: As Armin wrote last week in the comments, he dies in Saw. Harrison Ford also shoots him to death in Witness.

Q: Has Robin Williams ever died in a movie?
-Spaghett

A: What Dreams May Come, he's dead for like 90 percent of the movie. Armin also mentions in the comments last week that he dies in Insomnia.

Q: Adam Sandler "died" in Click.
-Qwerty

A: I haven't seen Click, but I checked a plot summary. Adam Sandler's character dies, but at that moment then goes back to the start of the movie. I guess that would be the same as someone dying and then being brought back by doctors. So, technically he died, but didn't stay dead. I'll allow it.

Q: Has Stallone died in a movie? Off the top of my head I can't think of one.
-Rambo

A: As Todd Vote wrote in the comments last week, Stallone died in Death Race 2000. He's also shot and killed at the end of F.I.S.T. based loosely on the life of Jimmy Hoffa.

Q: Jim Carrey also died in Man on the Moon.
Guest 1234

A: Eh, not going to allow that one. At the end of the movie Tony Clifton is shown performing with Bob Zmuda, who played the character along with Andy Kaufman, watching in the back. The suggestion being that Kaufman faked his own death, although they don't directly say that. Whether he died in real life or not, the movie suggests he possibly didn't.

Q: Jimmy Stewart dies at the end of the Glenn Miller Story.
-David

A: That's a fine line one too. If I remember correctly, at the end of the movie it's announced Miller's plane went down, but not that he's dead. In fact, Miller has never been declared officially dead by the U.S. military, only missing in action.

On Dec. 15, 1944, Miller was flying from the United Kingdom to Paris to perform for troops there during World War II. The plane disappeared on its journey and no trace of the plane, crew, Miller or other passengers ever found. Several theories on what happened exist, the most outlandish being Miller, who spoke German, was working undercover from direct orders from General Dwight Eisenhower to make contact with German officers in an attempt to end the war behind the scenes. Miller was caught in a Paris brothel by Germans and murdered, leaving the U.S. military to cover the matter up.

Glenn Miller was a popular big band leader of the 1930's and 1940's known for his unique, layered arrangements placing focus on the clarinet and saxophone. Miller and his orchestra were featured in a few movies such as Orchestra Wives and Sun Valley Serenade. When World War II broke out, Miller was too old to be drafted, but volunteered his services to head the Army Air Force Band.

Q: Gotta say I love this spoiler free addition of Ask 411! Thanks for totally ruining Gran Torino for me which I just got on my Netflix last week. Asshole.
-Kanye

A: It's a movie two years old, not something currently playing at theaters. I had to spoil the movie in order to answer the question. Sometimes that happens. By the way, Rosebud is a sled.

Q: I'm curious, who gathers all of the movie info for the IMDb site? I'm just wondering because I feel that some of the continuity and goofs are incorrectly said as so. –Dwayne

A: I once met the director Curtis Hanson while he was filming Wonder Boys in Pittsburgh and asked him about how imdb had him listed as playing one of the kid's dads in Goonies. He said the information was wrong and he had wrote the webmasters trying to get it removed. A check now shows it was removed and apparently they had him mixed up with another Curtis Hanson.

The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) started in 1990 and was bought by Amazon in 1998. The website is devoted to offering information on movies, actors and film crew workers. It started as lists on a couple different news group sites that Col Needham put together and organized. It started on the world wide web in 1992 as the Cardiff Movie Database, because it was housed on a server at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom.

Users submit the information on IMDB as far as cast lists, filmographies of actors and crew, trivia, continuity errors, biographies, movie connections, etc. The difference between imdb and Wikipedia is that imdb has hired staff who review and double check submissions before posting on the website. So while submitted information is checked for typos and accuracy, errors do occur. IMDB also has a ‘pro' section and resume subscription service so the talent themselves or their agents can submit and update information.

Q: Got some animation questions:
1. What is the Disney movie with the most sequels? I'd imagine it'd have to be animated
2. Do you think we'll ever see an animated theatrical release again from either DC or Marvel comics? (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is probably my second favorite movie ever.)
3. Was the ballroom scene in Disney's Beauty and the Beast always planned to be computer animated?
4. Finally, are there any animated movies or shows where a cast from a previous project ended up doing a bunch of voices for it? The only ones I can think of are the cast of Scrubs on Clone High and Star Trek: TNG cast members on Disney's Gargoyles
-Cactus

A: It's a loose film series, but Disney has made five Medfield College films. The Absent Minded Professor and Son of Flubber starring Fred McMurray as college professor Brainard and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, The Strongest Man in the World and Now You See Him, Now You Don't all with Kurt Russell as college student Dexter Riley are set at the fictional college named for Medfield, Mass. Supposedly, Walt Disney had good friends who lived in the town and visited them on occasion. The similarly named Midvale College was the setting of the two Merlin Jones films starring Tommy Kirk and Annette Funicello The Misadventures of Merlin Jones and The Monkey's Uncle.

Counting the made for TV movie there are six Herbie movies and a short-lived TV series that all share continuity. The Love Bug, Herbie Rides Again, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, Herbie Goes Bananas the TV-movie also called The Love Bug and Herbie Fully Loaded.

Since Disney bought out Marvel there has been talk of adapting a Marvel property by Pixar. I think that's probably the best bet. Overall, I think both companies have realized for animated faire they do better by producing direct to DVD releases, which are cheaper to make and sell more than movie tickets. Both have produced some pretty good direct to DVD releases, so it's not like they are intentionally sacrificing quality by not going the theatrical route.

Computer Animation Production System (CAPS) was in its infancy as developed by Pixar for use by Disney and Beauty and the Beast was the second movie to use it. The system allowed for different levels of color and multiplane effects than the animation Disney was using at the time. Originally, animators didn't want to use CAPS, but when they saw how advanced the technology was at the time they relented for its use in the ballroom sequence. So, originally, no, they weren't going to use computer effects at all in the movie.

Several live action television shows have been adapted to animated shows while retaining the original cast or most of the original cast to voice their cartoon counterparts. This includes "Star Trek the Animated Series," "The New Adventures of Gillian" and "Gilligan's Planet" off of "Gilligan's Island," "The Brady Kids" from "The Brady Bunch," "The Dukes" off of "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "It's Punky Brewester" among others.

Q: When did Jennifer connelly get heavy? To me she has always been just right.
When Blossom was on I thought she was kinda hot towards the end of the series. One really odd one is Courtney Love but only in the movie 200 Cigarettes. Faira BUlzaka(not sure how t spell her name) she was in The Waterboy and in the Craft.
YOU gotta do an article on women like that and have readers send in suggestions.
-Guest 4597

A: Jennifer Connelly was never on "Blossom." Do you just use "Blossom" as a random measuring stick of time, like BB for Before Blossom and AB for After Blossom? Of women on the series, Mayim Bialik was Blossom, Jenna von Oy was her friend Six, Portia Dawson was her brother Anthony's girlfriend and Finola Hughes came on as her dad's girlfriend.

I also don't know what you mean by Jennifer Connelly being fat. I haven't seen anything of her recently where she's looked heavier than usual. I'm thinking you think Jennifer Connelly is a different person.

Courtney Love looked alright during her big movie push in the nineties. She's just strung out and used up looking now.

Fairuza Balk has that hot goth chick thing going on. She cleans up nice too.

Q: Juliette Lewis is another one of those weirdly hot women .. as Drawn Together would say, "RETARDED HOT!"
-Krunchy

A: Not feeling this one. For me, she's too skinny and too goofy looking in the face. There's something with her eyes and mouth that just doesn't look right.

Q: Female guilty pleasure...Michelle Rodriguez...she snt your typical "hottie', but damn something about her is SOOOOO sexy!!! Like she will kick your ass if you dont do a good job pleasuring her in bed...
-Mike

A: I think Michelle Rodriguez is regular hot. I think her background in action and sports movies might make her seem not regular model or actress hot, but she is.

Q: There is no reson to feel guilty about finding Rosanna Arquette attractive. She was one of the hottest women of the 80's. Hell, she made a guest appearance on an episode of Malcom in the Middle a few years ago and still looked fantastic.
-Guest 3838

A: I've seen some recent photos where she doesn't look good at all. Really showing age lines in her face and bad skin. She still dolls up nice though.

Q: A women I find oddly attractive: Kristen Schaal. I don't know what it is, maybe that I find funny women very sexy.
-The Great Capt. Smooth

A: She would probably be very happy to hear you say that, as I listened to Schaal a week ago on the NPR show "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" promoting her new book "The Sexy Book of Sexy Sex." Schaal can currently be seen in Dinner for Schmucks as Paul Rudd's secretary and has also worked on "The Daily Show" and "Flight of the Conchords."

Not feeling you on her. She's the type of mousy looking girl with a squeaky voice I usually do well with, but I don't find her particularly attractive, although I do find her funny. Why I do well with such women I think is the contrast because I'm big and burly with a deep voice. Opposites attract. Chad Webb of here on 411 used to play the game "Celebrities I could pick up in a bar." I could pick up Kristen Schaal. From the picture below we know she's a fool for cock.

So, if you got more ugly dogs you think are hot or want to spoil more movies or actually have an original question, shoot me a line for next week.

Don't die.

"So, you just pretend to be an asshole."
"It's what I'm good at."

Are you a fan of the Comedy Central Roasts? Who are some celebrities you would like to see roasted?

Posted By: Spaghett (Guest)  on August 23, 2010 at 12:30 AM

Thanks for answering my questions! Here's some more!

1. Jonathon Frakes directed some of my favorite TNG episodes, but I hear he has a furniture store or something these days. Did he have any big successes behind the camera that weren't involved with Star Trek?

2. I saw a movie on AMC a few years back (when they actually still showed "classics"), and I'm pretty sure Alan Alda was the lead actor. It was about a couple who would meet each other annually for a romantic weekend in a cabin. What was it called, and is it available for purchase on DVD?

3. I am a huge fan of [Scrubs], so the last 4 or 5 years were incredibly frustrating as a viewer of NBC (especially after the whole Coco-Fiasco). I lost count, but at one point I swear I had counted 15 timeslot changes over the course of the series! Is this a record? If not what is the show with the most time changes?

and finally

4.Was Boston Legal canceled due to ratings, or was it just too expensive? Talk about a FANTASTIC show! I'd feel bad if it was ratings, because I picked up Season One on DVD right after it was canceled (I didn't know that at the time).

Thanks in advance!

Danny Glover died in Saw as well

Ha! thanks for the shout out Leonard, glad to help, grettings from your old pal from Mexico...

Oddly enough, I generally agree that I don't find Kristen Schaal attractive, but that picture is by far the most attractive I have seen her.

in regards to the passing of actors in movies. Danny glover also died in Shooter thanks to Mark walberg and the explosion of the Montana senators cabin

Vanila Ice has never died on film!(Did he die in Cool as Ice?)

Posted By: The Great Capt. Smooth (Guest)  on August 23, 2010 at 05:44 AM

To answer a lot of these death questions, just check out Cinemorgue. Just from checking there I can tell you Jim Carrey dies in The Dead Pool and one of those made-for-tv Mike Hammer movies. Danny Glover also died at the end of Switchback, and Bill Murray died in Hamlet and City of Ember.

Posted By: SeanAltly (Guest)  on August 23, 2010 at 05:54 AM

Robin Williams also died in the film: The Final Cut

As far as hot chicks go: Jenna Von Oy is actually hotter After Blossom. And strangely, using the BB or AB timeline, AB Melissa Joan Hart is hotter, but BB Melissa Gilbert was some sexy hotness. Also BB Tiffany, because AB Tiffany just is a little too ragged out looking. BB or AB Debbie Gibson is good though.. I'd take either one.

Gotta add Deets from Lonesome Dove as Danny Glover's most tear inducing death.

Sofia Coppolla is my favorite "Ugly Hot". Mainly because she has gorgeous feet and I like big noses...

Here are a few difficult questions I googled but couldnt get much info on:

- Chevy Chase is considered an asshole by many. Can you give examples of this?

- The Kids in the Hall had a falling out after Brain Candy. Can you explain info on this (Scott Thompson mentioned something about it in an interview on Suicide Girls website and it perked my interests)

- Sly recently broke his neck fighting Steve Austin in the expendables. Can you share any insight as to what happened?

Some opinion questions for you:

- What is your favorite TV Miniseries?
- What book series would you like to see made into a movie/s?
- Do people hate twilight because it is the cool thing to do or is it really that bad?

Here are two questions for you:

1) What are some movies (that are in a genre you enjoy) that people seem to love, but you don't like it for God knows whatever reason? To clarify, I'm not talking about an action movie fan not liking the latest romantic comedy, but that same action movie fan not liking Die Hard. Do you have any of these?

2) If you had to live in a country other than the USA strictly for the availability of movies that country produces, where would it be? For instance, I live in Canada, and can get American or Canadian movies no problem, but finding a way to conveniently watch movies produced in the UK (or any other country, for that matter) is a nightmare. Where would you relocate to?

Keep up the awesome work,

Vince

I think he meant that Blossom was hot at the end of the series.

I'm also thinking he meant Jennifer Coolidge and not Jennifer Connelly.

2. I saw a movie on AMC a few years back (when they actually still showed "classics"), and I'm pretty sure Alan Alda was the lead actor. It was about a couple who would meet each other annually for a romantic weekend in a cabin. What was it called, and is it available for purchase on DVD?

That would be "Same Time Next Year" and I believe it was with Ellen Burstyn.
------
Other actresses that are considered attractive but have "something" include Maya Rudolph (from SNL), Melanie Lynskey (Rose from Two and Half Men), and of course Pauley Perrette from NCIS.

If they ever cast a live action Family Guy movie Kristen Schaal would make the perfect Lois Griffin.

Posted By: Guest#1234 (Guest)  on August 23, 2010 at 12:47 PM

I think the guy who mentioned Blossom was having a little run on sentence problem there. As in-- Blossom is weirdly hot in addition to Conolly.

We need to come up with a name for this inexplicably attractive thing. You know before American Pie (or whoever coined the term), we would've put MILFs in this category

Posted By: Guest#8371 (Guest)  on August 23, 2010 at 01:24 PM

The Next Generation cast also appeared as a group in a Family Guy episode.

Don't know what version of This Boy's Life you've seen but Deniro does not die in that movie.

Tom Hanks dies in lady killers , and Danny Glover dies at the end of shooter.

Posted By: ek 123 (Guest)  on August 23, 2010 at 05:50 PM

Tom Hanks also died in Saving Private Ryan. And Philadelphia. Tom Hanks dies plenty of times!

For most deaths, I think that goes to Sam Jackson, just on account of him being in everything. Gary Oldman has died in at least twelve films.

Posted By: Jeremy (Guest)  on August 23, 2010 at 08:12 PM

What has happened to the cast of That 70's Show outside of Ashton Kutcher? I know Eric had a role in Predator but what about the others?

Posted By: Pete (Guest)  on August 23, 2010 at 11:14 PM

A few people I'm not sure have died in film (though who probably have):

Thomas Jane
Mark Wahlberg
Ben Affleck
Orlando Bloom
Nicolas Cage
Cuba Gooding, Jr.
Tom Cruise
Brendan Fraser
David Arquette
Steve Buscemi

IMO any death that A) didn't occur in "real" life, and B) didn't last the rest of the movie (or movie series) shouldn't count; i.e., Adam Sandler dying at the end of Click shouldn't count because it was immediately retconned.

It seems women are excluded from this game due to their lack of roles in movies where they die. Most name actresses stick to dramas and romantic comedies, which have far fewer deaths to the leads than action and horror films.

Posted By: Nick (Guest)  on August 24, 2010 at 01:28 AM

Tom Cruise died in Collateral. Nicolas Cage dies in Leaving Las Vegas and Face/Off (although he dies with John Travolta's face on). Steve Buscemi dies in Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Armageddon. I think Mark Wahlberg dies in Fear.

Posted By: Richard Stamos (Guest)  on August 24, 2010 at 12:24 PM

Buscemi didn't die in Armageddon but thanks for the rest.

Posted By: Nick (Guest)  on August 24, 2010 at 07:03 PM

Buscemi also gets killed in desperado by an early incarnation of Machete (Danny Trejo).

Posted By: Dok (Guest)  on August 24, 2010 at 10:05 PM

Steve Buscemi dies in Fargo, and if angels die
Ben Affleck does in Dogma.
I think Nicholas Cage dies in Kiss of Death and Mark Wahlberg dies in Fear, but I am not sure.
