Movies/TV's 3R’s 8.31.10: Piranha 3D, Emmys, Paris Hilton, Jessica Alba, More
Posted by Shawn S. Lealos on 08.31.2010

Welcome to Week 62 of The 3 R's for the Movie/TV world.

Without any further ado, here is...

  • The Walking Dead: A new trailer for The Walking Dead has been released. I have one word to describe it: "holyfreakingcrap!" Frank Darabont produces the AMC TV show about a zombie outbreak and the survivors trying to rebuild their society. Based on the comic book, The Walking Dead debuts on Halloween 2010.

  • Ghost Rider 2: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance starts filming in Romania this fall. For a reminder of why this Nic Cage starring sequel is a Right, it is directed by Neveldine/Taylor of Crank. Nic Cage is having a career revival as of late with off the wall characters and, as someone who didn't mind him hamming it up in the first Ghost Rider movie, that makes it even better. Neveldine/Taylor also made the underappreciated Gamer and I feel they are the perfect fit for this movie.

  • Netflix on the iPod and iPhone: A lot of people don't like watching movies on their iPods but I watch movies on mine while working out, so this is good news for me. With a new app, Netflix subscribers can watch streaming movies on their iPods now.

  • James Gunn's Super Photos: A couple of new pictures were released over the last week for James Gunn's upcoming superhero flick Super. The two pictures show Rainn Wilson, the star of the movie - a superhero with no real powers but a pretty sturdy wrench to beat the villains with. Ellen Page is in the second picture, starring as the groupie who adores Wilson's hero. Keep your eyes out for more photos. I'm ready to see Kevin Bacon as the movie's bad guy.

  • Piranha 3D 2: I'm not big on sequels but I make an exception when it comes to popular horror movies. The only time I really complain is when they go too far and stop being entertaining (see the Hellraiser write up in this week's Ridiculous column). Well, Piranha 3D was a ton of fun and ended with a perfect set up for a sequel. This is one horror sequel I'd love to see.

  • Sandy and Tom: Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks, two of the most popular actors of the last twenty years, will be teaming up for the first time. The movie is based on the amazing novel Extremely Loud & Incredible Close. This is not hyperbole - the book is amazing. It is based on a young boy in search of a lock that matches the key left behind by his father, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Bullock and Hanks will play the boy's parents. I'm pretty excited to see this movie and can't recommend the book highly enough.

  • The Emmys Presentation: I don't have a problem with the award winners and feel Jimmy Fallon did a great job. However, I hated the production values of the show. The voice over guy when a winner was chosen tried, and failed miserably, to be funny. The entire ceremony tried to be jokey and it came off flat and unfunny. The crowd noise was inaudible, so when someone made a joke, even if it brought laughter, you couldn't hear it. The production job was just poor.

  • Nevermore: John Cusack has signed to portray Edgar Allen Poe in the upcoming film The Raven. The movie is set to be directed by James McTeague, the third movie by the director following V for Vendetta and Ninja Assassin. I'm still on the fence about this and it could be good but I'm not sold on Cusack as Poe.

  • Dita Von Teese: Dita Von Teese, the former Mrs. Marilyn Manson, has filed a lawsuit against her former landlord. Von Teese claims she moved out and asked for her security deposit to be returned. When she didn't get it, her attorneys called her former landlord and that is when he went into a Mel Gibson-type rant. According to Von Teese, her former landlord personally attacked "Plaintiff's Jewish managers and business managers ... and writing to Plaintiff (Von Teese) that she should 'beware of Jews. In your business no one can do anything without them."

  • Iron Fist: I love Iron Fist and I am excited about him getting his own movie. However, I want to see him in a Heroes for Hire movie with Luke Cage more than a solo effort. I can live with a solo movie, though, until I heard who they hired to write it. Rich Wilkes has been hired to write the movie and I am now extremely worried about the quality of the movie. Wilkes has written The Stoned Age, The Jerky Boys and Airheads. One of those movies is decent but none of them scream Iron Fist.

  • Mighty Morphin Ranger: David Yost made a big announcement this week that he quit his role as the Blue Ranger on the original Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers TV show because people harassed him over his sexuality. He said people on the set kept making fun of him because, making sexual slurs towards him, and said it made it hard to work there. He has recently returned to acting and this sounds like someone trying to get his name out there for publicity purposes. Any pub is good pub, right David?

  • Hellraiser 10: How many people know there have been NINE Hellraiser movies? The lack of knowledge for this might be because five of the sequels have been straight to video and one barely had anything to do with Pinhead. Well, the reboot of the franchise might have been halted after the less than favorable reaction to Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Instead, Dimension, who was in danger of losing the franchise if they didn't make a new movie before December, green lit the tenth movie in the series, Hellraiser: Revelations. Victor Garcia (Return to House on Haunted Hill, Mirrors 2) will direct, earning the title "Mr. Sequel." Check out the trailer from the ninth movie in the series.

  • Jessica Alba in Spy Kids 4: Jessica Alba is in talks to appear in Spy Kids 4. Her role is that of a retired spy with a baby and two step kids tapped to be the next Spy Kids. Jessica Alba is playing a mom. Feel old? It seems like just yesterday she came to Oklahoma City and made a complete ass of herself, plastering anti-shark hunting posters over landmarks during the making of a movie no one even liked.

  • Octomom: As much as I hate Kate Gosselin, I hate the idea of someone getting popular for no reason other than popping out babies. That means I hate the popularity of the Octomom even more than that of Gosselin. If you have ever heard this woman speak, you know she is trash. Now, the world gets to hear more from her as she will star on Dancing with the Stars this season. What the hell makes her a star?

  • Paris Hilton: Paris Hilton is facing felony charges for cocaine possession. She has enough money to get a slap on the wrist (ala: Lindsay Lohan). I want to see how this plays out. She claims the purse wasn't hers but the charges are still coming. I would bet good odds her money and celebrity will get her out of trouble.

with all due respect, Mr. Lealos, but Paris Hilton, regardless of her wealth, is still innocent until proven guilty in court.

whatever her excuse may be, it makes a mockery of a fairly decent legal system to treat it the way you do.

don't forget, it is better to let 100 guilty people go free than it is to send 1 innocent person to prison.

you seem to have a severe case of shadenfruede, and really may need some councilling for it.

How does Marilyn Manson get hooked up with all these hot chicks? I mean the guy looks like a gremlin. Why would this woman, or Rose McGowen, or Evan Rachel Wood even look twice at that guy, other than the obvious reasons? It's like he put some spell on them and then in a few years the spell wears off and then they realize the horror they are in.

    Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.

If you make an error, you make it on the side of protecting the general population over protecting the indivdual. I'd rather have 100 murderers and 1 innocent person in jail versus 100 murderers free.

FYI: Nadya (Octomom) Suleman will NOT be on DWTS. She didn't even make the short list!
