Just in time for Halloween! It's your favorite little review corner. Where I take you into the dark, sticky basement and give you a...
It's only appropriate that since it's Halloween I review a horror film. Since Joseph Lee does such an outstanding covering horror on 411mania, I stuck to what I know and went with A Wet Dream on Elm Street. Before you discount this as "just another adult film parody", director Lee Roy Myers has done an excellent job at making a truly funny and entertaining movie. In fact, I found this just as enjoyable as the original Elm Street, just not as violent.
Starring Sophie See, Gracie Glam, Charley Chase, Mishka, Chad Alva, Tommy Pistol, Chris Johnson, and Anthony Rosano as Freddy, the plot keeps it simple as we follow the murdered sex shop clerk who is out for revenge! Yes, this could the plot of any horror film but Myers has fun with the premise and injects real humor into the production that keeps this above both average scary movies and cheap parody flicks.
The movie open to the 2-year reunion of Elm Street High and the three actresses (Dee, Chase, and Glam) wondering where the rest of their class is. Enter their teacher (Pistol) to act as narrator on what happened. Namely, shady sex toy peddler, Freddy, killed them! When it comes to performers, I can't imagine a better selection than what we have here. No scene is wasted and the females know how to command the camera. Sophie Dee is one to keep an eye on. She has a rapidly expanding fan base and after watching her in this movie, I can see why. Pistol really stands out with his talent and his master of comedic timing. In fact, some of the funniest quotes of the movie belong to him. I would enjoy seeing him in a film that played to his comedy skill!
But of course the real star is Anthony Rosano. It would have been very easy for him to camp it up and turn this into "just another parody" but he balances his performance and does justice to the original subject matter. Rosano had the difficult task of acting behind a mask and he steals every scene he's in. Wes Craven and Robert Englund would be proud. The make-up itself is impressive and I strongly suggest you check out the special features to pay respect to the time and effort that went into bringing Freddy "alive"!
You might be asking, "But is it scary?" Depends on what your definition is but you probably won't be covering your eyes in fright. A Wet Dream on Elm Street is what a parody is supposed to be. A film that pays homage to the original; to remind us of why we enjoyed the first one so much. This movie captures that spirit and adds to it with plenty of classic scenarios. If you're looking for a "different" Halloween flick, pick this up. Even if it's NOT Halloween, you'll enjoy it. This is an entertaining parody and I would love to see this made into a franchise.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK!
KatzSmith Productions, David Katzenberg, and Seth Grahame-Smith are hoping audiences area ready (and remember) Beetlejuice because they want to do a sequel! Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the duo commented on the status of things. Katzenberg started by saying, "We're not remaking Beetlejuice. People have been very angry about that." Smith finished with, "When Warner Bros. came to us about it, we said the only way we'd do it if we got Tim [Burton's] blessing and involvement, and we got that, and the star of the movie has to be Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, and it's a true continuation 26 years later. Not just throwing him in as a cameo going, 'Hey, it's me. I endorse this movie.' We're not there yet [with Keaton] because we don't have a film to present to him."
My question to you: Do you want more Beetlejuice?

CRAZIEST CASTING RUMOR OF THE WEEK!
How many of you remember Robert De Niro's portrayal of a comedian in Martin Scorsese's film The King of Comedy? If you enjoyed that then you'll be very interested in knowing that the actor is taking another role as a comic with Deadline having a report on The Comedian.
Actor Sean Penn is returning to the director's chair and De Niro will play, Jackie Burke, a raging comic past his prime who clings to any recognition that comes from his days as a beloved TV character as he desperately attempts to reignite his stagnant career.
YOUGOTTABEKIDDINME!
Are you sitting down? Bloody Disgusting has the scoop on the official plot synopsis for director Fede Alvarez's remake of Sam Raimi's 1981 cult classic The Evil Dead, produced by Raimi himself.
Here's the short and sweet plot new synopsis for the Evil Dead remake:
Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.
As you see the story is pretty much the same from the original film but sans Bruce Campbell's Ash character.
Is this exciting to you?
Let's get into the REAL news!
Batman Debunked!
With any huge project there is bound to be false rumors going around. When it comes to Rise of the Dark Knight, you have TONS of false rumors out there! Apparently the word was going around that the film was partially inspired by the comic book and novel, Batman: No Man's Land, which has an earthquake causing Gotham to spiral further into depravity. The rumor came about because of the photos and videos of Bane (Tom Hardy) running around with a large machine of sorts that was believed to be an earthquake machine.
That's false.
Cosmic Book News reports that "a source" told them that the story goes exactly like this: Bane takes over Gotham as a result of injuring Batman. (Christian Bale) While Batman is away recuperating, Bane and his henchman take over the city. During this recovery period for Batman, and the city falling deeper and deeper into chaos, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) tries to combat the situation by himself, which ends in his injury depicted in the teaser. Batman appears at Gordon's bedside, is inspired by his speech depicted in the trailer, and sets out to take Gotham back.
Got all that?
No word on how Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) and the long-rumored Talia al Ghul (Marion Cotillard) fit into all that. One thing that the source had to say to Cosmic Book News that was of interest was that Robin absolutely will not be appearing in the film in any way, shape, or form. That goes against the multitude of rumors that Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character, John Blake will go on to be Christopher Nolan's take on the Boy Wonder.
July 20, 2012 can't come fast enough.
Mickey Speaks!
Last week I reported that the character of Marv has been written to appear in the upcoming Sin City sequel, tentatively planning to shoot in early 2012. ComingSoon.net caught up with actor Mickey Rourke at the junket for his latest project, Immortals, and asked whether he had any plans to return to the role.
"It depends," Rourke smiled, "It depends on how bad they want me. You feel me?" Some time ago, Rourke had noted his reluctance to re-approach a part with such heavy make-up. "I did [like the character]," he reiterated today, "but I'm claustrophobic, so the the hours of makeup -- You have to keep it on for about 13 or 14 hours a day. It's latex and glue and that stuff that gets my eyes all red..." He went on, "I remember I picked up some chick at a bar in Texas one night and invited her to the set to have lunch at the lunch break," he grinned. "I couldn't take the s--t off. F--k it, I never saw her again!"
Still, Rourke hints that the three-dimensionality of a character like Marv goes a long way. He spoke openly about another, recent comic book project that didn't turn out the way he wanted. "I try to find the moments where [the villain is] not that cliched, evil bad guy and it's a big fight," he explained. "I had it on Iron Man and they won. It was going to work for Marvel and them breaking [Jon] Favreau's balls and wanting just a one-dimensional villain. The performance and all the things that I tried to bring to it end up on the f---ing floor. That can cause you not to care as much. To not to want to put that effort in to try and make it an intelligent bad guy or a bad guy who is justified in what his reasons are."
You have to love an actor who puts it out there.
Twice the Sequels!
It's been fifteen years since most of the world was devastated by an alien attack in Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich's summer blockbuster Independence Day, and the last update from the latter filmmaker was pretty bleak on the potential for a sequel anytime soon. As far back as March of 2010, the idea of back-to-back sequels wasn't out of the question, but apparently star Will Smith wanted quite a lot of money for the sequels. Since then it's been assumed that the sequels were dead, but now it sounds like Fox is willing to make them whether or not Smith actually decides to partake in another close encounter or not.
Agree or disagree?
But wait! Here's more sequel news!
Twice in the past year, 17 years after Dumb & Dumber hit theaters, there have been rumblings from all the right sources that a sequel to the 1994 comedy starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels might be on the way. The former actor, who hasn't enjoyed the glory of his comedy heyday in years, revealed in June that he might revisit Lloyd Christmas and director Bobby Farrelly, the other half of the sibling duo alongside Peter Farrelly, also said they were thinking about what Harry and Lloyd would be up to 20 years after the original film. Now Deadline has news on some writers for the sequel that might be the Farrellys' next film.
Agree or disagree with this one?
Tragedy on the Set!
I never enjoy having to report these kind of updates but it's a reminder of the very real dangers involved. Filming on The Expendables 2 took pause as MSNBC reports that a stuntman whose name is being withheld was killed on the set in Bulgaria. It appears to be the case of one of the film's explosions gone wrong. Another man was taken to the hospital with severe injuries.
Nu Image/Millennium Films confirmed the incident in a statement to Deadline. It reads:
"It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident. Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating this accident."
None of the cast were on location at the time of the accident.
Thoughts go out to all involved.

Box Office Survey!
Instead of me just repeating what you can see, how about we ask some questions about the weekend box office? Answer in the comments and NO CHEATING!
* Does Johnny Depp's Rum Diary opening at #5 have any effect on his box office appeal?
* Will Puss in Boots success mean no more Shrek films?
* Tintin has opened very well worldwide. How will it do in the U.S.?

The Rum Diary's poor showing in week one will not have any ill effects on Johnny Depp's appeal. The movie was poorly marketed and, outside of the quick television spots and those that read the original story, no one seemed to know much about the film. Depp is a bona-fide SUPERSTAR and that won't change. It would be nice, though, if studios got behind his lower-budgeted work and not just his big-budget blockbuster films.
As for Tintin, Steven Spielberg's name alone will generate an audience. I see a solid opening weekend audience, with word of mouth helping in the second, third, and fourth weeks. $35-60 million sounds about right.

Honestly, I had barely heard of Tintin before hearing about them doing a movie. It's so crowded around the holidays, it could be hard for it to find breathing room at the box office. On the other hand, look who's directing it.

As for the Evil Dead synopsis, you forgot 2 things-the kids going to the cabin to shake a drug habit, and the fact that it's actually the kids who read the necronomicon aloud. As much as I love the original 3 (hell, I named my youngest son Ash) this WILL suck.

I've wondered about how many people in the US are actually familiar with Tin Tin, but I think as long as it's good it'll do good. I'm looking forward to it.
I just watched Beetlejuice again the other night. I still don't think it's that good of a movie, and don't really care to see a sequel (though Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian is intriguing). But after reading on Wikipedia (bastion of truth that it is) about the original script for it, I want to see a remake done in that tone.
