Two Tivos To Paradise 12.09.11: The Late Show, Sons of Anarchy, Game of Thrones, New Girl, Madonna, and more!

News and thoughts on Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones getting awards love, the Sons of Anarchy's season finale, J.J. Abrams' new show, Jay Leno continuing to kill NBC, raves for New Girl and more!
Hello friends. I am doing everything possible to be in the holiday spirit but the past week has found our house in RCN hell, with THREE visits from their technicians to try and find out why our new box can't communicate with the other two that we have, meaning moving shows from room to room has been difficult at best and put a crimp in our regular viewing habits. Finally, on Wednesday night, after 8 days and more than six hours on the phone with various support folks, everything is now working.
Here's a quick look at Comedy Central's upcoming sketch comedy show Key & Peele…
Syfy is excited about what they have in store for you in 2012…
Quick reminder that we'll be back next Friday with a regular news column, followed by our picks for the year's best shows on Friday the 23rd and our annual TV Entertainers of the Year column on the 30th. We've even started to get some RSVP's from folks being honored who want to stop by and say thanks.
Lights will guide you home, and ignite your bones, and I will try to fix news.
Life Is Just Another Dream In This Old World Of Broken Dreams
November late night TV ratings have been released and CBS is the big winner; for the first time in 17 years, The Late Show with David Letterman topped The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in demos for the sweeps period. The Tonight Show was down 20% from last November while The Late Show held steady, giving CBS the win. Both shows were down in total viewers, and Leno did top Letterman in that measure.
At 12:35 the results were similar, with The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson up 20% in the demos from last November to top Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, which dropped 17% in demos but still won in total viewers. Ferguson's was the only late night show to have any demo increase from last November. ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! was the only late night show to have any increase in total viewers, up 7% in that measure and tying The Late Late Show in demos.
First off, I am perhaps the world's biggest Craig Ferguson fan so I am thrilled with his ratings going up as he is really the only person doing anything that would be considered in any way unique or original with his show. This is not to say the other late night programs aren't entertaining (some are, some aren't) but that they continue to follow a tried and true model where as Ferguson marches to the beat of his own (robot) drummer.
Secondly, this is yet another example of how much NBC screwed themselves with their Jay Leno Show at 10pm experiment. Strong 10pm programming leads to strong 11pm local news numbers which leads to strong 11:35pm late night talk numbers; Conan O'Brien's best defense to network executives complaining about lower ratings during his stint hosting The Tonight Show was, "The Jay Leno Show is bombing and I have a smaller lead-in audience." The affiliates all felt that way, which is why a change was made, but it set development at the network back at least 5 years.
Think about it; The Jay Leno Show took away five hours of primetime a night for NBC; in order to fill those 5 hours they would have to have made at least 10-15 pilots that spring, and ordered somewhere between double and triple the amount of scripts for pilots, so that's somewhere between 30 – 45 potential shows that got nowhere near the NBC pipeline because they thought they could save some money. And that's really what it was about, too; money. The network knew ratings would be down with Leno at 10pm, they just figured that the difference between the advertising rates would be more than made up for by the lower production costs.
And it's not like it's going to get better anytime soon; as we head into 2012, how many 10pm series does the network have that put up solid numbers? SVU does ok – its hit series lows this fall and is frequently finishing third in the demos behind Revenge and CSI – and then there is…nothing. Smash will do well for them in February, and who knows, maybe The Firm will be a hit on Thursdays. They also have Awake waiting in the wings, to me the best pilot of the 2011-2012 season but it's also a dark, complex drama that the network likely has no idea how to promote and nurture.
What's Your Name? Who's Your Daddy? Is He Rich Like Me
The calendar says December which means we've entered awards season in the entertainment industry. While the SAG and Golden Globes are the big ones yet to come, two large groups did release their nominations for the top shows on TV this week.

While I question 30 Rock as one of the best written shows on TV last season (some episodes were fantastic, others simply blah), the specific episode Queen of Jordan which was singled out was truly brilliant, as good a parody of reality television as the industry has offered up. The lack of any mention of Community in here makes me sad and really wonder what these voters are watching because it's clearly not the same show I am. I wish one of the episodes of Archer, in particular from the arc with his breast cancer, would have found a way into the animation category, and don't get me started on The Late Show with Craig Ferguson once again being ignored.
THE 2012 PRODUCERS GUILD OF AMERICA
The Danny Thomas Award (Best Producer, Comedy) 30 Rock (NBC), The Big Bang Theory (CBS), Glee (Fox), Modern Family (ABC), Parks and Recreation (NBC)
The Norman Felton Award (Best Producer, Drama) Boardwalk Empire (HBO), Dexter (Showtime), Game of Thrones (HBO), The Good Wife (CBS), Mad Men (AMC)
Best Producer, Live Entertainment & Talk The Colbert Report (Comedy Central), The Ellen DeGeneres Show (Syndicated), Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO), Saturday Night Live (NBC), The 64th Annual Tony Awards (CBS)
Best Producer, Reality Competition The Amazing Race (CBS), American Idol (Fox), Dancing with the Stars (ABC), Project Runway (Lifetime), Top Chef (Bravo)
Best Producer, Non-Fiction American Masters (PBS), Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (Travel), Deadliest Catch (Discovery), 30 for 30 (ESPN), Undercover Boss (CBS)
The big thing to know when processing these nominations is that the PGA uses a different eligibility period, so Homeland, Curb, season two of Louie, and anything else this summer and fall were not in the running. Taking that into account, I continue to wonder about the inclusion of 30 Rock over shows like Community or Happy Endings or The Middle, to name just three.
I Wanted More Than Life Could Ever Grant, Bored By The Chore Of Saving Face
Multiple media outlets are reporting that Ryan Seacrest met with NBC on Wednesday, with the idea of him replacing Matt Lauer as co-host of The Today Show next year being a part of the conversation. NBC confirmed the meeting but said they were simply discussing different possibilities with Seacrest, whose contract with E! – owned by NBCUniversal – is up in late 2012. Lauer's deal with NBC is also up towards the end of next year and there are rumors he would like to leave.
As much as some of you may scoff at the concept of Seacrest interviewing heads of state and top newsmakers, I'd offer up that Lauer used to be the guy who gave that hard pitch when HBO did free programming weekends. Seacrest was also on the shortlist to take over Larry King's timeslot on CNN and there is no question it was his if he wanted it.
My best guess is that NBCUniversal signs Seacrest to some sort of huge umbrella deal, that calls for him to appear on-air in a variety of roles as well as continue to develop original programming (he executive produces all of the Kardashian-related shows for E! as well as Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, among other series). The Today Show has been number one in the mornings for a long time now but Good Morning America is a pretty close second and losing Lauer and not replacing him with a big name would leave them vulnerable. Considering the state of their primetime programming (see above), there is no way they can afford to lose their grip on the one time of the day they own, and adding Seacrest to the morning team would generate more buzz than anything the morning battles have seen since Bryan Gumble went to CBS.
I Would Dial The Numbers Just To Listen To Your Breath, I Would Stand Inside My Hell And Hold The Hand Of Death

Turns Out Not Where But Who You're With That Really Matters
(The Best of What's Around aka The Best Thing I've Watched In The Last Seven Days)…
Words cannot possible do justice to the brilliant awkwardness of the sex scene featuring Zooey Deschanel and Justin Long on this week's New Girl but I certainly never thought I'd live long enough to see anything that combined the voices of Jimmy Stewart and Rosalind Russell with fetish gear and choking. Turns out I was wrong and the comedy world is better for it.
Long has proven to be a phenomenal casting choice as he can match Deschanel uncomfortable step for uncomfortable step, and do so just as endearingly. I have no idea how either of them were able to keep a straight face during that scene – my guess is the outtakes will make purchasing the season one DVD worth it all on their own – but it was as funny as anything I have seen in a while. Add in one of the better quotes of the fall season ("an afterbirth ain't an afterbirth without some Schmidt up in there") and you had a fantastic 22 minutes of entertainment.
People Say I'm Crazy Doing What I'm Doing. Well, They Give Me All Kinds Of Warnings To Save Me From Ruin
What's flashed before my eyes the last seven days…Very much enjoyed the way things played out on Parenthood, with Kristina being mad about the kiss but it didn't turn into a huge thing that threatened to break up the family. People get mad in life and are entitled to their anger (and the snide comments that can go with it) but then they need to find a way to get past it, and that's just what happened here. Words cannot do justice to just how far Dax Sheppard has come in his portrayal of Crosby, who at times feels like the most realistic character on a show populated by some of the more real world people that TV has right now…At this point not only do I think that Next Iron Chef: Superchefs is the best collection of culinary skills TV has had competing under one roof but they are also all performing at the top of their game, and the former doesn't always equal the latter. I truly have no idea who is going to win and I LOVE it…I continue to greatly enjoy Once Upon a Time although I am beginning to wonder just how much time has gone by since the pilot in terms of the timeline of the show. Doesn't Emma have an apartment in Boston she is paying rent on? And she may have been a one woman show but what happened to her bail bonds customers? And does she do laundry every day? …I thought the second hour of the Sons of Anarchy finale was amazing, with the show making a conscious decision to go away from the big cliffhanger ending and instead use the last 45 minutes or so of the episode to explore how this current season had changed the characters and what the repercussions would be next season. The cast was top notch across the board, and I've started to think that Charlie Hunnam is among the most underrated performers on TV right now as he never seems to be in the mix at awards time yet it's hard to imagine anyone else playing Jax. I am very much hoping to see more Ray McKinnon on my screen in the near future as he brought an energy to his portrayal of Lincoln Potter that really stood out…I was so entertained by Jon Stewart using clips of The Pokemon Movie during Monday's piece about Herman Cain suspending his campaign on The Daily Show that I accidentally woke up the twins, making my daughter groggily ask, "who is laughing? Why is Daddy laughing?"…Last week's Community was pretty wonderful, with the moments between Big Cheddar and Tinkeltown more than carrying the load (tell me you didn't get a lump in your throat in the episodes final scene, I dare you!!) but last night's holiday episode/Glee parody was dead solid perfect. I'll be counting the days until the show returns in the spring...As much as I enjoyed Dwight as a personal trainer (he would actually be GREAT at the job), the non-gym portions of last week's episode of The Office were wildly erratic, some kind of funny, some just really played out. As I mentioned before, Andy needs to find some level of footing in his new job so the show can move forward in some way...How I Met Your Mother was more meloncholy than momentous, and despite a terribly unfunny subplot involving Marshal, the episode featured a strong performance from Cobie Smulders and a great reminder of just how good a guy Ted is and why we continue to root for him to find true love..Modern Family was not in any way special but any episode the features the return of the dog butler is worth watching!!! And to be fair, the show is so damn good that even a mid-level outing is good for many laughs...The Jackson medley on Glee was very well done but the real highlight of the episode was the return of Sam, who came back a much stronger and more confident character than I remembered. On a show where so many are trying to overcome their anxieties, it was a nice change of pace to have someone be so self assured...Shatner was SO much better on PSYCH than he was on his terrible CBS sitcom last season that it's clear he can still bring it as long as the material doesn't let him down...
TV Pick Of The Week Hollywood Icons and Innovators (TV Guide Network, Sunday, 8pm) has a basic premise; take two very talented folks, one more famous for talented displayed in years gone by and the other in the middle of their careers, and sit them down to talk about what they do. The lack of gimmicks is what makes it work so well, with both participants relaxed and in conversational mode. What also makes it work is that the younger performer is slightly in awe and the older one will have none of it.
Part one at 8pm features Curb's Susie Essman sitting down with Penny Marshall while part two at 9pm has the inspired pairing of 30 Rock's Jack McBrayer with comedy legend Tim Conway.
Don't miss Hollywood Icons and Innovators, Sunday at 8pm on TV Guide Network.

Sorry but I have to completely disagree with you about Community this week. Maybe its because I hate Glee so much and anything that tries to act like/incorporate it, but this show is awful. I'm watching it on DVR right now as I type this and am close to taking it off DVR as its changing my entire opinion of the show. After this abomination, the break until spring will be good.

I also thought this week's Community Glee show was horrible. Almost unwatchable and the GF thought the same. The only good part, was the little bonus credits song thing.
I really like Community, I really do... But the show has gone too far off the reservation. A show like tonight's would not pick up new fans if it was their first show. The show was at it's best when it pretended to be a real show about losers at a Community college.
Now it's all just about odd gags and jokes and there's not even the slightest bit of pretending that the show is about a real college situation. It's a shame because I think the gags are funny in the right doses, but they've just went overboard with it.

you honestly need to be sterilized and your children beaten to death. the Whitney-itis that's eating away at your brain cannot and will not be passed on.
don't worry though, your wife can live on, as i'm sure there's plenty of real men with fully developed frontal lobes that will service her better

I like Glee and I found this week's episode of Community to be hilarious. The musical stuff from people that are clearly not of that mindset made it funnier to me, except the Alison Brie doing Betty Boop. Don't stop watching a great show because of one episode, that's stupid. They don't do musical episodes all the time. I thought this was a great way to do a holiday episode and even the guy that reviews the Community episodes for this website liked it. I understand not liking musical shows, but Community is awesome and it will be missed this spring.

While I agree that the The Breast Cancer story arc of Archer was awesome, if they were only going to recognize one episode, I'd prefer the Pipeline episode. That's probably my favorite episode of the series.

The only new TV show concept that sounds awesome is The Box. Homicide fans will remember thats what they called the interrogation room in that show TV, and many of Homicides greatest moments were in there. Hell, the 'Three Men And Adena' episode was pretty much set entirely in there and won an Emmy for writing. Chris Rock and Neil Patrick Harris had the asses kicked in Homicide's Box too.
