Two Tivos To Paradise 12.16.11: The Golden Globes, Howard Stern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Game of Thrones, and more!
Posted by Al Norton on 12.16.2011

Hello friends. Welcome to the last news column of 2011! Next week will be our picks for the best of television 2011 and the following Friday (12/30) will be our annual Two Tivos To Paradise TV Entertainers of the Year edition.

Once again I want to take a moment and thank those of you have joined the TTTP Facebook community already and invite those of you who have not to come by, click like, and join in the fun! We have lots of exclusive content there, giveaways you can't find here, and a great opportunity for you to interact with your fellow TV fans. The latest giveaway is a signed copy of Destination Truth: Memoirs of a Monster Hunter. Josh Gates, host of Syfy's hit series Destination Truth has written a book about his world travelling adventures and gives fans a behind the scenes look at just what goes into the popular television show. It's quite funny at times and gives you a unique look at how a reality series is put together. Post "Destination TTTP" on our FB wall and as long as you haven't won anything in six months and have a US mailing address, you'll be in the running!

We've got a video heavy open this week so let's get to it…

A full trailer for the upcoming season of Game of Thrones

Staying on topic, here's the first scene from the upcoming season of Spartacus: Vengeance. It's pretty gory, so watch at work (or at all) at your own risk…

And now for something completely different…

Will Dailey, the official singer/songwriter of TTTP, has done a cover of Pearl Jam's Let Me Sleep (It's Christmastime)

This a hickey or the news?

Such A Cold Finger Beckons You To Enter His Web Of Sin, But Don't Go In
Awards season began in earnest this week when the SAG and Golden Globe nominations came out along with the AFI top 10. Here's a rundown of the TV related nominations with some quick feedback…

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards (Sunday, January 15th, NBC)

Best Supporting Actor (Comedy, Drama, Mini-Series, or Movie)
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
Paul Giamatti, Too Big to Fail
Guy Pearce, Mildred Pierce
Tim Robbins,
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family

It's tough to offer criticism of a category that mixes three different types and two different styles of programming together but I will say that Neil Patrick Harris, as usual, had a pretty fantastic year. Anyone from Parks and Recreation or Community would have been welcomed. Also, where the f@#% is Walton Goggins?!?! And Giancarlo Esposito?!?!

Best Supporting Actress (Comedy, Drama, Mini-Series, or Movie)
Jessica Lange , American Horror Story
Kelly McDonald, Boardwalk Empire
Maggie Smith, Downton Abby
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Evan Rachel Wood, Mildred Pierce

Same as above; everyone here was very good but they've taken what should be at least 15 different nominations and condensed them to 5. Julie Bowen is pretty damn awesome. Someone from Happy Endings in one of the above two categories might have been nice, too.

Best Actor, Comedy
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
David Duchovny, Californication
Johnny Galecki, The Big Bang Theory
Thomas Jane, Hung
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes

No Louis C.K. is a crime, and Joel McHale really should be up here, too. I am not a particularly big Big Bang Theory fan but even I know that Jim Parsons is much more critical to the show's success that Galecki. Also, Steve Carrel's final run on The Office was the best work he did on the show and his lack of a nom despite being eligible is pretty glaring.

Best Actress, Comedy
Laura Dern, Enlightened
Zooey Deschanel, New Girl
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Laura Linney, The Big C
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

A pretty solid list, to be honest. There are folks who can make good cases for nominations but everyone up there has just as good a case. The most surprising omission is Melissa McCarthy.

Best Actor, Drama
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Kelsey Grammer, Boss
Jeremy Irons, The Borgias
Damian Lewis, Homeland

Where the f@#% is Timothy Olyphant?!?! Interesting in that usual suspects Huge Laurie and Michael C Hall are nowhere to be found. The HFP continues to act like Friday Night Lights never existed.

Best Actress, Drama
Mirelle Enos, The Killing
Claire Danes, Homeland
Julianna Marguiles, The Good Wife
Madeline Stowe, Revenge
Callie Thorne, Necessary Roughness

Perhaps the most ridiculous category in recent memory. Danes, Enos, and Marguiles all deserve these nominations, for sure, but Madeline Stowe?!?!? If you're going to nominate anyone from Revenge in this category, wouldn't it be the show's lead, Emily VanCamp? Stowe's not bad in any way but there is NO ONE who considers this an award worthy performance. Outside of the HFP voting body, I mean. And I love Callie Thorne – you'll see just how much in two weeks – but again, this is not an award worthy performance. Katey Sagal, who won last year and was just as good this past season on Sons of Anarchy, is nowhere to be found. Neither is Kyra Sedgwick or Anna Gunn. Things like this are way people treat the Golden Globes like a joke.

Best Series, Comedy
Enlightened
Episodes
Glee
Modern Family
New Girl

Parks and Recreation, Louie, Community, Happy Endings, Cougar Town, The Middle, Suburgatory, Bored to Death, Raising Hope, How I Met Your Mother…Sorry, I was listing shows that should be up there instead of most of this group.

Best Series, Drama
American Horror Story
Boardwalk Empire
Boss
Game of Thrones
Homeland

No Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, or Friday Night Lights. All the nominations are from cable networks, btw, so no shot at Parenthood getting a nibble, either.

The 18th ANNUAL SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS (January 29th, 8pm, TNT/TBS)

Best Actor, Drama
Patrick J Adams , Suits
Steve Buscemi , Boardwalk Empire
Kyle Chandler , Friday Night Lights
Bryan Cranston , Breaking Bad
Michael C Hall, Dexter

While I am thrilled to see a USA series get some love, if someone from Suits truly deserves this, it's Gabriel Macht. Also, where the f@#% is Timothy Olyphant?!?!?

Best Actress, Drama
Kathy Bates, Harry's Law
Glenn Close, Damages
Jessica Lange, American Horror Story
Julianna Marguiles, The Good Wife
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Swap Katey Sagal for Kathy Bates and Anna Gunn for Glenn Close and you've got a good start. As much as I love Jessica Lange and her excellent work on AHS, Claire Danes not being recognized for her work on Homeland is absurd.

Best Actor, Comedy
Alex Baldwin, 30 Rock
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Steve Carell, The Office
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family

Jon Cryer is funny enough but simply not in the upper echelon of television's comedic performers. H Jon Benjamin, Jim Parsons (and this is coming from ME!!!), and Danny Pudi all should be on the list instead of him. Oh, right, and where the f@#% is Louis C.K.?!?!?

Best Actress, Comedy
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Betty White, Hot in Cleveland

Kind of surprising to not see Laura Linney or Jane Lynch's name up there. I love Betty White but I think she will get nominated for her funeral one day. Jane Levy for Suburgatory, Martha Plimpton for Raising Hope, and of the three women from Community – all deserve to be recognized.

Best Ensemble Cast, Drama
Boardwalk Empire
Breaking Bad
Dexter
Game of Thrones
The Good Wife

There is simply no way to have a list of the best casts on TV and not include Sons of Anarchy. Homeland, Justified, and Friday Night Lights deserve mention as well. I frequently say we are in a golden age of television drama and the fact that you could do another full set of nominations without blinking an eye is exhibit A.

Best Ensemble Cast, Comedy
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
Glee
Modern Family
The Office

Call me a broken record but based on 2011, there is no way The Office cast performed as well as the group from Community. No way. Parks and Recreation has a legit beef, as does Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Turns Out Not Where But Who You're With That Really Matters
(The Best of What's Around aka The Best Thing I've Watched In The Last Seven Days)…
Huge props to Syfy as they know how to do a holiday episode as well as any network on TV right now, with the stand alone episodes of Eureka and Warehouse 13 offered up last week being fantastic hours of television that stayed in the reality each show has created while incorporating the spirit of the season in ways that rang true.

Eureka's hour was much more of a comedy one, with the danger involved in the end-of-the-world-of-the-week being purely a vehicle to showcase different styles of animation. The anime at the end was pretty amazing, actually. Jim Parsons as the voice of Sheriff Carter's jeep was a stroke of casting genius, and I'll be damned if SNL alum Chris Parnell doesn't make for one hell of a Santa Clause. I was wondering where Henry's wife was on Christmas morning (not to mention the absence of Jo and Fargo's respective significant others as well) but that was probably the only thing wanting about this episode.

Warehouse 13 added a little bit of It's a Wonderful Life to the mix to create what I thought was one of their best episodes of the season and a wonderful example of just how great Eddie McClintock is; it may have taken him a few years to find a role suited to his many talents but success couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. I actually thought this was an episode they could have expanded to two hours and really rewarded long time fans with appearances by various characters from earlier seasons. Don't get me wrong – having Roger Rees back as MacPhearson was more than enough, I just wanted to point out how rare it is to like something so much that you wish it would have been longer.

People Say I'm Crazy Doing What I'm Doing. Well, They Give Me All Kinds Of Warnings To Save Me From Ruin
What's flashed before my eyes the last seven days…Damn, I did not see the end of Boardwalk Empire coming, or rather I didn't think they'd have the balls to do it. Huge props to the writers and the network for sticking with storytelling over business (certainly execs at one of the broadcast network would never go for such a twist)…Had a marathon of The League, watching the last four episodes over the weekend and loving just about every single minute of it. The only downside to me was Sarah Silverman's rather obvious performance – if you had made me guess what kind of character she'd play and what the subject of her scenes would be I think I would have been 95% accurate – but that didn't take away from the genius of Jeff Goldblum as Ruxin's Dad or the overall incredibly high number of laughs this show generates. For some reason network TV can't do dark comedy like FX. Well, not no reason – network execs can't fathom having not nice people as the leads of their shows and always try to soften them up. As an example, Whitney would be a much better – and different – show if she was a true bitch instead of an opinionated woman with a good heart. Same goes for last season's Perfect Couples, also on NBC (I think I described it at the time as "an FX dark comedy put in the hands of people trying to write the next Friends"). Anyway, my point is that The League is fantastic…Fear Factor was almost exactly what I remembered it has, although Joe Rogan was a bit more obnoxious than I recalled…I can't exactly explain why five adults yelling "turn on the lights" and the actions that followed were so moving but New Girl's first holiday episode was a winner…Homeland has proven itself to be a truly phenomenal combination of intense personal drama and twisty thriller, and I am so very excited for the season finale this Sunday. The show has not once done what watching conventional television has led me to expect, and as someone who watched a LOT of TV, I appreciate the hell out of that…The final scene of Fritz hitting Clay Johnson over the head with a pillow on Monday's episode of The Closer may have been predictable but it was still rewarding. The cast knows their characters so well and inhabits their skin with such ease that it's easy to overlook just how talented a bunch they are…The two going head-to-head in the finale of Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs are NOT who I would have picked going in, either in terms of talent or appeal but I can't fault the judging so far so they do deserve to be there. Can't wait for the finale on Sunday…Echoes of Lost run through Once Upon a Time on a regular basis but this past Sunday, with the kiss-induced flashbacks of a prior life were very reminiscent of the Lost series finale. A good episode and the first revelation of just what some of the characters know about their other lives and how far they will go to keep things the way they are…

TV Pick Of The Week
If you only know Jerry Lewis from his work as host of the annual Labor Day weekend Muscular Dystrophy telethons than you are missing out on a huge part of comedy's history, which is why you will see so many famous, hall of fame level faces doing the talking head thing in the new documentary Jerry Lewis: Method to the Madness, which premieres Saturday at 8pm on Encore.

It may be hard to believe now but at one point Lewis was THE biggest comedian in the United States and very well might have been the funniest man alive as well, which is an amazing combination. Think about it; how often is the most popular comedian also the best? This fantastic movie gives you a real look at the man, his work, and his legacy, and shows you the reverence in which he is held amongst his peers.

Don't miss Jerry Lewis: Method to the Madness, Saturday at 8pm on Encore.

The lack of a Best Drama *NOMINATION* for Breaking Bad for its groundbreaking fourth season is absolutely absurd. Here is a show that will go down as one of the best of all-time (and has a very good chance of being the GOAT if they can stick the landing with Walt`s transformation.)

It was hands down the best season of the year and perhaps the decade and its not even NOMINATED.

Moreover, they spit in the face of artistic integrity when they nominate American Horror Story over Breaking Bad. Credibility instantly lost.

Don`t even get me started on the horrible omissions from Louie, Parks and Community.

You see, it would be very different if they were worthy nominees and these great shows were excluded due to the competition... but for the likes of: American Horror Story, Boss, Big Bang Theory and Glee?

Fuck those award shows.

not going to touch the Golden Globe / SAG nominations because everyone knows they're ridiculous.

With regards to improving whitney, what can immediately be done is fire whitney cummings. she's completely unfunny and devoid of talent. in an industry where you have Tina Fey, Amy Pohler, basically all the women from the emmys, you can;t bring this kind of drivel to the table.

but here's my prediction: Jennifer Beals will mention at one point on her stint on Castle that she's a black woman and / or has it tough.

this woman has a gigantic chip on her shoulder because she's mixed race but doesn't look it. this has occured in every show she's been in

Not only should Parks and Rec have been nominated for best Ensemble, but It's always sunny In Philadelphia should have been as well...

I just think its amazing that NCIS attracts the most viewers of any show and never gets nominated for best drama.

Timothy Olyphant is damn awesome. Man-crush alert! He bored me in movies, but, holy crap, on Deadwood and Justified, the guys incredible. Loved the Emmy nominations for he and Walton Goggins earlier this year.
