The 8 Ball 12.20.11: The Top 8 Shows of 2011
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 12.20.2011

Welcome, one and all, to the 8 Ball in the Movie Zone! I'm your host Jeremy Thomas and as always, we will be tackling a topic and providing you the top eight selections of that particular category. Keep in mind that this list is meant to be my personal opinion and not a definitive list. You're free to disagree; you can even say my list is wrong, but stating that an opinion is "wrong" is just silly. With that in mind, let's get right in to it!

Before you start reading, have you bookmarked 411Mania.com yet? It's the easiest thing in the world to do, and it'll get you your daily dose of entertainment news that much quicker! Top 8 TV Shows of 2011

2011 is just about over, and with it comes a lot of year-end lists. We here at the 8 Ball are no different, and before we delve into the top and bottom movies of the year in a couple weeks, I thought it would be a good time to look at the best TV shows of the year. Most shows are on their winter break at this point so the timing was right. There's been a lot of good and bad television in the last twelve months, both on cable and on network TV. I've been fortunate enough to avoid a lot of the bad while catching a lot of the good stuff, so with that in mind, let's take a look at the best of the year, shall we?

Caveat: Unfortunately, I do not have an infinite amount of time and as such, there are a fair amount of shows I have not had the opportunity to watch. I'm sure most of them will be pointed out in the comments, but among the ones that have a lot of critical and fan love that I have not had time for are Justified, Community, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire and How I Met Your Mother. Not that I don't want to see them, but between work, writing, other TV, movies and personal time, I do need to include sleep occasionally.

Just Missing The Cut

Revenge, The Big Bang Theory, Dexter

#8: American Horror Story

American Horror Story is the new love/hate show of the season. You usually get that when Ryan Murphy is involved. There are those who can't stand the series' over-the-top nature but for my money, it's a hell of a lot of fun and brings the idea of horror back to TV in a way that we don't often get to see. The show got off to a somewhat rocky start as the first episode seemed high on shocks but low on cohesion; however as the series progressed, those who had a little patience were rewarded with really fun twists and turns involving both the living and the dead. A big part of the show's quality is the great cast; Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott make their characters believable and have real chemistry with each other while Taissa Farmiga, in her first acting role, shows that she has a lot of talent in the role of Violet. The stand-outs among the cast however are Jessica Lange--chewing scenery in a glorious way as the neighbor Constance--and Zachary Quinto in his recurring role as the gay ghost Chad. There is still one episode to go this season and a lot has been set up; this episode could be make or break but for my money it's one of the best new shows of the season.

#7: True Blood

True Blood is, much like American Horror Story, a guilty pleasure that you don't have to feel guilty about. The storylines are soap opera-esque, but it's done so in such a wonderfully twisted way that you have to appreciate it. That being said, the third season of this show really sagged in comparison to the first two. With the exception of Denis O'Hare (another AHS correlation) as the wonderfully evil Russell Edgington ripping out news anchor hearts and carrying around Jars o' Talbot, the show felt lost thanks to the unsatisfying werewolf plots, the even-worse werepanthers and the flat-out silly faery stuff. Season Four started out cleaning up some of that mess, which means that we got the stupid werepanthers for a little bit and the faery crap. However once that was (mostly) out of the way, we got the witches of Bon Temps. Marnie, as played by the wonderful Fiona Shaw, came in and threw everything for a loop. Eric forgot who he was, Pam started to decay and everything seemed to take on a new sense of urgency. Season Four of True Blood was by and large a return to form for a series that took the world by storm a few years earlier.

#6: Glee

And here's where I get the hate. Well, here and the fact that I haven't watched Community. Ryan Murphy's OTHER show on TV is not one that traditionally appeals to the demographic of our site. I get that, and it's cool. I, however, have friends who joke that Murphy had to have created the show with me in mind. And it's true, I do love the show. Season Two had some issues to it but I feel that it's come back strong in Season Three by going back to the ideas of character and story over guest stars and big pop hits. The songs are more seamlessly integrated into the storyline than they have been and make more sense; with the exception of only two numbers ("Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "Little Red Cup") I've generally enjoyed them all. Santana's coming out storyline was well-handled and Naya Rivera really got to step up to the plate for it. This show is still far from perfect but it's a lot of fun and one that I make sure not to miss each week...well, each week that it's not pre-empted by The X-Factor, anyway.

#5: Supernatural

My love for Supernatural one is something I talk with fellow 411 writers Joseph Lee on a pretty regular basis about. There are people who believe that the show faltered a bit in Season Six and I don't necessarily agree, but Season Seven is definitely an improvement on it. Every season you're left wondering how this show can raise the stakes for the guys and put their backs against the wall without getting to the point of "We've handled worse." That's sort of what hurt Buffy's last couple of seasons; after you kick a god's ass, an angry witch and the First Evil are pretty ho-hum. The men and women behind Supernatural know how to keep things seeming like the new threat is greater than the old one on a regular basis though with the Big Bads, and the Leviathans are certainly in that league. What's more, Sam and Dean are without so much now. They've lost Castiel, their car, their identities and possibly Bobby as well. That gives this a whole new sense of urgency. Add into that the fact that Jared Padalecki is always improving his game to the point that he's one of the better actors on TV at delivering genre lines of dialogue and Jenson Ackles is just flat-out excellent on a regular basis and this is definitely one of my favorite shows running.

#4: Modern Family

I have to be honest here; I am a new convert to Modern Family. I didn't actually start watching the exploits of the Pritchett and Dunphy clans until partway through this season. However, when I start watching a show my habit is to watch everything up to current (See: Doctor Who) and in fairly short order I was caught up on what is one of the funniest shows on television. What makes Modern Family work so amazingly well is that even through it's a mash-up of two well-worn sitcom styles--the dysfunctional family and the mockumentary--it meshes those very well and delivers traditional sitcom-like laughs without the laugh track. Furthermore it manages to be dysfunctional and yet heartwarming and optimistic on various issues the series explores by the end of each episode. It's sort of like the anti-Married With Children. Don't get me wrong, the Bundy clan was just as funny as the Pritchetts and Dunphys, but for very different reasons.

#3: The Walking Dead

The first season--all six episodes of them--of The Walking Dead left audiences blown away. Seriously, there was nothing like that on television and people were screaming for more, bemoaning the fact that we had to wait a full eleven months for new episodes. Then, worryingly, bad buzz began to filter in about the second season. We heard that AMC was having disputes with Frank Darabont about money, having given too much to Mad Men. We heard that the network's proposed plans including filming mostly indoors and cutting down on the zombies for make-up costs. Yes, they were supposedly going to be cutting down on the zombies in a zombie TV show. Then, suddenly and shockingly, Darabont had stepped down and it was soon revealed that AMC had fired him, and that some members of the cast were livid but afraid to speak up because "This is an apocalypse show, they can kill off anyone at any time." Well, if all of those fears were real--besides the obvious Darabont one, we know that happened--than the budget cuts must be coming out of the second half of the season because Season Two has been great so far. Anything that could be levied as a criticism has a counter for it. Sure, they spent too much time searching for Sophia, but look at the impact it had as opposed to if she had been found and killed in a single episode or even two or three. Yes, they're deviating from the comics but that means now that no one knows what's coming and it makes the whole thing more suspenseful. Yes, Rick was being a bit whiny but he proved he sure could make the hard decisions in the last seconds of the Fall Finale. When it's all said and done, the show continues to be brilliant. I enjoy Mad Men but if AMC is smart, they'll know where to spend the money next time.

#2: Game of Thrones

I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to think of Game of Thrones after the first episode. The acting was great, the production values were amazing and the story was intriguing, but there was so much going on that I was completely lost on who was who; there were a LOT of characters introduced in that first episode. As time went on and the show began to unfold the various storylines, you then knew that there was something special going on here. Sure, Peter Dinklage is getting all the attention and award love for his work as Tyrion Lannister--and believe me when I say he deserves every accolade he wins and then some--but the rest of the cast is exceptional as well. Emilia Clarke has been underrated for her work as Daenerys Targaryen; she makes an important part of the storyline intriguing throughout the early parts of the season. What helps set it apart--not completely, but absolutely in part--is that the show has no small amount of balls when it comes to taking risks. How many shows do you know of that would cast your most recognizable actor, included as the face of the show in all of the marketing materials, in a role that will see him killed off? It was brilliance and I know people were pissed, but I loved it. I'm thrilled as hell with how the season ended and am definitely looking forward to season two.

#1: Sons of Anarchy

Your first hint on this should have been the fact that I did a Top 8 Sons of Anarchy episodes list last week. Like Supernatural, Sons of Anarchy has always been able to up the stakes season after season. However, where there were a coup[le slight dips of quality in some of the middle seasons of Supernatural, Sons of Anarchy has managed to improve itself every single season. This season the cards were laid out with Clay finally being set up as the villain, and even though we knew he had to die, he survived. Not only that, he survived in a way that made sense and didn't stretch credibility. The only potential flaw you can find in this show, which has been much talked about and in my eye amplified simply BECAUSE critics need something to pick at, is the storyline with Juice's racial secret, something which seemed a wee bit frivolous from the get-go but played out just fine overall. The performances are the best the show has ever seen; standouts are Katie Segal, Charlie Hunnam, Maggie Siff and especially Ryan Hurst. This is, flat-out, the greatest show on television and even if you don't dig it, you have to respect it.

"[Walking Dead]...the budget cuts must be coming out of the second half of the season because Season Two has been great so far."
-------------
Um, dude? They had like one zombie per episode besides the season opener, the one where Shane and Otis are chased, and the barn finale. AND they stayed at the same place for 7 episodes. Farm 90%, highway 5%, woods 5%.
If that ain't cost-cutting, I don't know what is. They could've done all the scenes for the first half season in two weeks tops.
While the finale with Sophia was pulled off in a great way, the 4 episodes of (mostly) boredom preceding them cannot be fixed by it. I like character building as much as the next guy, but they overdid it a bit.

"Sons of Anarchy has managed to improve itself every single season"
---------
Season three was weak. The whole baby story was just out there. Two warring leaders of the IRA need the baby of a VP of a charter of one of the not-largest Motorcycle Clubs in the US. Yeah, right.
Moreen Ashby - please, no.
It was a dip in quality after the first 2 seasons.
And Season 4 even though it was much better, had it's faults too, in the finale particularly.
Everything tied up so neatly, without any tension. I as wondering how the RICO would be handled. Well, no sweat - Cartel guys are CIA and they pull the plug.
Construction Site owned by slezebag is about to be approved - have the weird agent go and ruin it, "because he doesn't like him". Just like that.
A lot of resolutions were fake and uninspired.

What ever happened to this site?

It's been overrun by glee and true blood lovers.

Ah yes, the thrilling Walking Dead season 2 part 1, where we piss around a fucking farm and look for a little girl the whole time. Oh, but it's all about the CHARACTERS, right? Hey, how about they run into a racist that's NOT portrayed by a white person? That would be even more shocking that shooting the little girl.

Don't know if you haven't watched these ones, but four of my favourite shows this year have been Louie, Parks and Recreation, The Middle and Happy Endings.

Supernatural has been a favorite of mine for a long time now, I put off watching season 6 for ages because I didn't think they could improve on the ending to season 5 but I'm really glad I changed my mind

Posted By: Guest#7915 (Guest)  on December 20, 2011 at 01:13 AM

Seriously this list pretty much sucks with the exception of Sons of Anarchy and Game of Thrones. I watch Glee and it is nowhere near the top 10 shows of 2011 you missed the best show on TV period Breaking Bad not to mention the best new show of 2011 and definitely one of the top 5 shows on TV already Homeland.

My Top 8 of 2011 would look like this not that crap you posted.

1. Breaking Bad
2. Louie
3. Homeland
4. Sons of Anarchy
5. Game of Thrones
6. Justified
7. Parks and Recreation
8. Community

Honorable Mention
Boardwalk Empire, Rescue Me, and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson

Where the hell is 'Boardwalk Empire'?!?

I don't usually comment on opinion pieces because after all, they are opinion pieces.

But I had to say something after not seeing Breaking Bad listed here. The last season of breaking bad was imply amazing and will probably go down as the best season of TV...ever!

Posted By: What about Breaking Bad? (Guest)  on December 20, 2011 at 01:37 AM

Wow. Dont write a TV column if you dont watch breaking bad. Kinda laughable.

5 American Horror Story
4 The Walking Dead

I'm shocked Breaking Bad and Dexter aren't named and named high.

The guy has Glee and True Blood on his list and you're asking him if he watches a football show? Fat chance this fruit has ever heard the phrase tight end in a sports environment.

You really should make time for the "haven't had time to check these out" list, as I would rank the 4 of those shows I've seen on that list above all 7 of the ones that I have seen on your best of list.

Seriously ?? Dexter gets an honorable mention and Glee gets a spot !!!!
Since you watch Glee, i wanna ask a question, What the hell is 'Regionals' ??

I know this is just your opinion and all but Breaking Bad had one of the best all around season of tv ever. I mean from the script to the way its shot to the acting it had a breathtaking moment in every episode. Also Dexter had one of its best seasons's ever.

glee over breaking bad? really dude?

how is boardwalk empire not even on this stupid list? let alone number one

"I have not had time for are Justified, Community, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire..."

Your priorities truly, truly suck, sir.

Posted By: Steve (Guest)  on December 20, 2011 at 03:25 AM

You really need to make time for Homeland. It is absolutely fantastic.

Posted By: Guest#2909 (Guest)  on December 20, 2011 at 03:30 AM

"Unfortunately, I do not have an infinite amount of time and as such, there are a fair amount of shows I have not had the opportunity to watch."

This is all well and good, but with this finite amount of time you've decided to watch True Blood, Glee, American Horror Story, Revenge and The Big Bang Theory ahead of Breaking Bad, Justified, Homeland, Community and Boardwalk? Seriously? That's not even mentioning Friday Night Lights, Parks and Rec, Louie, Archer or Men of a Certain Age.

Jesus Christ, man.

Posted By: Guest#5754 (Guest)  on December 20, 2011 at 03:59 AM

Alright.. so you don't watch Breaking Bad because you're too busy watching shit like Glee.

No Parks + Rec means you have bad taste in comedy.

American Horror Story placing means you have bad taste in drama.

Big Bang Theory as an honorable mention means you're a horrible person. BBT sucks.

Watch some real TV:
Breaking Bad, Louie, Parks + Rec, Community

Modern Family has something for everybody. Claire has started to get on my nerves from time to time, but that's about it.

Call it your personal favourite shows, then it's good, but when you do a top 8 list, start watching new shows.

top 10 of 2011 (in no order)

community
game of thrones
homeland
sons of anarchy
archer
breaking bad
fringe
boardwalk empire
louie
friday night lights

There thats the most definitive list you can have when it comes to TV shows in 2011.

Not trying to be a dick, Jeremy, but if you are going to write a TV column, it helps to watch as many shows as you can. No way glee or supernatural make the list, not when they are facing their worse seasons to date.

Posted By: gooched (Guest)  on December 20, 2011 at 06:14 AM

I rarely comment on these top 8's.

But No Breaking Bad or Boardwalk make this whole page pointless!!!!!

Glad Dexter didnt make the list though, as a big fan i've felt let down by this last 2 seasons.

But serious Breaking bad yo!!!

Posted By: Juke (Guest)  on December 20, 2011 at 07:12 AM

I had originally written a post filled with alot more hate. I'm going to try this again because that's not cool.

Okay, so you've got six dramas, two "comedies". AHS is on FX. That means you have access to FX broadcasting, and are choosing to either not watch or not mention three great comedies. Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Archer, and Wilfred. Each easily worth an honorable mention... But your honorable mentions gives us a hint as to why you woudn'y mention these shows, or Community, or Parks and Recreation. The only other comedy you mention is Big Bang Theory.

BBT and Glee are two of the laziest comedies on TV, the 3rd most lazy is Two and a Half Men, and it only left the number one spot because of forced casting decisions.

Comedy works best when you try and push people. Go outside a comfort zone for once and you might find you like it.

(And yes, BBT IS lazy. Their nerd-jokes are often just regular jokes with references swapped. It's Two and a Half Men with guy from Roseanne. And this latest season has been even worse, switching focus from the character roles we've gotten used to "all these losers who we've established will NEVER get girls are all in relationships" so that the cast can be expanded and even MORE generic sitcom plots can be introduced. It takes a certain skill to regress a show by progressing characters.)

as much as I love game of thrones it is not that risky for them to cast a recognizable face and market the heck out of him then kill him off. The first book of the series on which the 1st season is based has been out since 1996 and any body who had read the books know that ned was gonna die.

Posted By: winteriscoming. (Guest)  on December 20, 2011 at 07:28 AM

How the hell is Breaking Bad not on this list? The latest season was absolutely mind-blowing. It should probably be number 1. If it's not here because you haven't watched it yet, get on it now!

Posted By: Guest#4948 (Guest)  on December 20, 2011 at 07:36 AM

great list!!!

its should include breaking bad though!

my personal favorites:

5. sanctuary / spartacus

(r.i.p. andy whitfield)

4. breaking bad
3. supernatural
2. the walking dead
1. sons of anarchy

and i agree with you on sons of anarchy, though all these shows are great they all have slight dips in quality from time to time, sons of anarchy does not...

SOA improves every season and is a full throttle ride all the way through, filled with great writing and great acting!

Posted By: Guest#1604 (Guest)  on December 20, 2011 at 08:06 AM

I would have to add Late nite with Jimmy Fallon. He started off really bad and uncomfortble, but this year he has transformed that show into the best Late Nite show on TV today, yes, even better than Conan.

Louie and Parks & Rec deserve to be top 10 also, if not top 5!

I would put Tosh.O on the list as well.

No comment on Glee, but agree about Supernatural. Consistently great story telling, excellent acting, especially Jensen Ackles. Although Jim Beaver will be much missed.

walking dead NOT at number 1 is horse shit!!!!!! ok, maybe not, season 2 had been alittle slow compared to season 1.. but the mid season finale really saved the whole season and made up for everything.. the build up of a whole season to the last 5 mins was worth it.

If I had HBO (it's HBO, right?), I'd probably watch Game of Thrones. Sounds like I'd like it.

Why all the hate because your favourite show didn't make somebody else's list, or they like something you don't? Grow up and realize everybody is entitled to their own tastes, and no one can watch every single show out there. Just make your own list.

I agree with Supernatural, Game of Thrones and Sons of Anarchy. I haven't seen the Walking Dead but it sounds like I would really like that one too. I respect the writer's right to like the other ones.

"Um, dude? They had like one zombie per episode besides the season opener, the one where Shane and Otis are chased, and the barn finale. AND they stayed at the same place for 7 episodes. Farm 90%, highway 5%, woods 5%.
If that ain't cost-cutting, I don't know what is. They could've done all the scenes for the first half season in two weeks tops.
While the finale with Sophia was pulled off in a great way, the 4 episodes of (mostly) boredom preceding them cannot be fixed by it. I like character building as much as the next guy, but they overdid it a bit."

So, what you are saying, is that of the seven episodes they had, they all essentially featured plenty of zombies?
*SPOILERS BELOW*

Episode one: The Zombie herd on the highway causes the group to lose Sophia and plus no less than three brutal zombie kills.

Episode two: Ricks son got shot, arguably a good reason to not feature a lot of zombies, but they do when Shane and Otis venture off to the school, they get trapped.

Episode three: Shows the conclusion of Shane and Otis' trip to the school to get supplies. lots of zombies dying, and a few eating too.

Episode four: The zombie in the well, admittedly a little light on zombies.

Episode Five: Daryl gets hurt, has visions of his brother, and kills no less than three zombies. Glenn finds out about the zombies in the barn

Episode six: Glenn goes all Commando on the pharmacy zombie, Shane and Andrea find a town over run with Walkers

Episode seven: Barn full of walkers all getting boots to asses, and zombie Sophia.

My point? How can you say there has been a lack of zombies in this show?

My list in no particular order:

Sons of Anarchy
Breaking bad
Walking Dead
Archer
American Horror Story
The League
Supernatural

Okay, so I can only do seven.

You people commenting this are all fucking retarded. It is a piece about his opinion, get the fuck over it. Oh no, a guy on a website doesn't watch my favorite show, let me go rage about it! You guys sound pathetic calling this guy out about something he likes, just because you don't agree. Telling him to grow a pair because he watches Glee or something like that, I'm sure you're to busy masturbating in your mom's basement to even watch shows like that. People can have an opinion so stop being Nazi's and try to worry about more important things in your life. Jesus christ.

It's nice to see they are finally hiring women to write for them.

Equality and all that but i doubt your winning any points with obvious female demographic popcorn pulp like Glee and True Blood.

I lik these list's better when they are labeled "My awesomest show's this year" by some random preteen on you tube at least i know where not to click.

One of the worst TV lists I've ever seen. Laughable

Glee or any of these shows over BREAKING BAD?!! Please die

While I don't entirely agree with all your assessments, you are definitely spot on about Jensen Ackles being "flat out excellent on a regular basis". If he'd been on a mainstream tv show(or a cable show) giving these same kind of performances year after year, he'd have a stack of awards nominations and awards by now.

YOu know how I know he doesn't actually watch TV? Because Glee and American Horror Story are on this list and Justified and Louie are not.

Because it's not a bloody personal list, he's on a website writing an article about the top 10 shows on tv this year. It's supposed to be somewhat objective and informative, why would i want to know jeremy thomas' personal favourite shows...i wanna know his opinion on the top 10 BEST shows of the year.

Wouldn't the shows he likes be his "opinion of the BEST shows of the year?". You're better off conducting a survey of top shows. In fact, based on the comments here, I'd be willing to bet that you have enough already.

With all of the hate on this article, it seems that everyone already knows what their best shows are. It's amazing how offended people get on here...
