Welcome to A Bloody Good Time.
Before we get to this week's topic, let's look at the feedback for last week. If you'll recall, I went over the best horror movies with big movie stars in them.
Charles said: I agree 100% about Frailty. That's a movie that definitely didn't get the recognition it deserved at the box office. From what I remember here, it was one that was released quietly and then forgotten about 2-3 weeks afterwards. As for The Thing, I finally caught that back in October on Encore and it has definitely vaulted up my list of favorite movies. I always seem to catch something new every time I watch it.
It's such a snob thing to say, but I really think Frailty was too smart for the average movie-goer. I'm not saying that you have to be smart to enjoy it, I just think the average person would rather watch something that requires less thinking, so that's why no one saw it.
thcary muvees asked: this is the first edition of this column where all you said was "see you next week" should i be worried? its my favorite on this site!!!
No worries. I just started doing that because I haven't been able to make up my mind what I want to write about on a given week. I would hope that if this column ever ended, I'd at least be able to explain to you why or say goodbye.
Uncle Jessie replied: Keep your hands off my woman. I would also toss Halloween H20 out there. An excellent sequel, JLC is an icon, AND you had Dawson's friends at the height of their teen powers. Think the movie did well financially too. HAVE MERCY
I just don't think H20 was all that great of a movie. It was okay, but certainly not on the caliber of anything in the countdown.
APrince66 added: Aliens, an all time favorite. Next year, you can probably add World War Z to this list.
We can only hope!
This week we're going to talk about Jason Voorhees. Again. I haven't actually devoted a lot of columns to the Friday the 13th franchise, but I mention it quite a lot. Jason's made my top movie monsters, my top franchise list, and even got a countdown of the dumbest Friday the 13th moments. But I've never actually broke down the franchise proper and pointed out which were the best, the worst, etc. I'm going to kind of do that here. I'm not going to delve too much in the history, just give my personal ranking of all twelve Friday films.
I hope this becomes a regular feature with long-running horror franchises, as I last did this with the Puppet Master films.
I'm not going to lie. While the Universal Monsters, as a franchise, may be the best in terms of quality, it's only second for my personal favorite. I can't help it. Something about a giant zombie man in a hockey mask slaying nubile teenagers is entertaining to me. If you're reading this column, chances are you love the movies too. So join me as I rank all twelve entries from worst to best.
Also, here's some mood music:
#12: Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)
I'm not ripping this movie apart because Jason's not in it, let's get that out of the way right now. True, I don't really give a crap about paramedic Roy but that's honestly the least of this movie's problems. A New Beginning is the worst of the series because it flat-out sucks. The characters suck, the writing is awful (even for one of these movies) and yes, the surprise twist at the end is absolutely stupid. The killer isn't Jason, it's not even Tommy (which would have been a much more interesting way to do things), but some paramedic who snapped after his son died.
You'd think setting the film in a halfway house would open the door to some interesting characters, but instead we get a bunch of nobodies with zero personality, some greasers, some rednecks and Reggie the Reckless. As I've said before, Shavar Ross is the worst child actor I've ever seen. This movie doesn't even have good kills. There's the garden sheers to the eyes of a topless Debi Sue Voorhees (okay, that part I liked) and that's about it. It's a shame this movie os so bad, because the exploration of Tommy's character is some of the best development in the entire franchise.
#11: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
But of course, having Jason, even having the best Jason (Kane Hodder) doesn't always mean your movie is going to be better. With Jason Takes Manhattan we have a movie that takes place 50% on a boat, 45% in Vancouver and then 5% in Times Square. Jason Voorhees is in Manhattan for maybe two scenes! But that's not the dumbest part about this movie. The dumbest part is the hokey pseudo-psychic link between the Rennie and Jason. She sees him as a kid, she has memories of meeting him in the lake and she hallucinates at the most inopportune times.
Then there's the ending. New York floods its sewers with toxic waste every night at midnight (what, you didn't know that? It was all the rage in the late 80s) and Jason gets caught in it. This causes his face to melt and he turns into a little boy again. I'm not kidding. The only reason this is better than A New Beginning is that it actually features Jason and I always enjoyed the scene where he punches that guy's head off. The trailer was pretty nifty, too.
#10: Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
This was my very first Jason film, and what a way to get introduced to the series. This is an awful film, but it stops just shy of being the worst for a few reasons. One, the unrated cut has a lot of nasty kills, some of the best in the series. That moment when Deborah (Michelle Clunie) gets ripped in half while having sex is one of the goriest moments in the entire franchise. There's also Steven Williams as Creighton Duke, who just steals every single moment he's in the film. It's just a shame that Jason defeats him so easily because I would have loved an entire movie of a bounty hunter looking for Mr. Voorhees.
The movie we get has Jason in it, but barely. It's a sequel to The Hidden more than it is a sequel to Friday the 13th. I appreciate the series trying something different, but if you change Jason's story at this point, you're just going to alienate the fans, who are the only ones that want to see a part nine in your franchise. This also suffers from some awful characters, dumb dumb moments and a really bad light show at the end. But it's no Takes Manhattan.
#9: Jason X (2002)
God help me, I love Jason X. Yes, it's a stupid movie. Yes, there's almost nothing redeemable about it. Jason in space sounds like an easy concept but with even dumber characters than normal, an awful score (the New Line movies really had trouble finding an appropriate score) and outright bizarre moments (like the nipple twisting scene), they somehow screw it up. Badly. But I can't help it.
I love Jason X. I love the fact the characters are dumb, I love the fact Jason gets his ass kicked by a S&M android only to turn into UberJason, and I love the fact the only way they can kill him is through planet re-entry. This movie is just so over-the-top and ridiculous that it goes from being an awfully bad movie to an awesomely bad movie. That's really the only reason it's not listed as the worst in spite of it having every reason to be.
#8: Friday the 13th (2009)
This one got a lot of hate when it was released, and I'm not entirely sure why. Have you people that hate this actually watched a Jason movie? This one is worlds better than the last four I mentioned, and it does its very best to make Jason an actual threat. More of a reboot than a remake (if it were the latter it would have been about Jason's mother), this feels like a lost tale from the days of Jason's early days. If you squint your eyes and ignore some continuity problems, this could easily be a follow-up to Freddy vs Jason.
Are there some dumb things? Well the fact that Jason keeps Whitney prisoner is kind of stupid, even if I understand the reason why. Jason's just more of a "take no prisoners" kind of guy. Even when Ginny attempted to trick him in Part 2, he eventually saw through it. Other people seem to hate the tunnels he uses, but that just seems smart to me. Jason's a man through the first half of the series. A man's gotta have an easier way to get around the woods. Even in Part 2 he had a shack. Finally, it's really cool to see Sam Winchester taking on Jason, when Supernatural fans were denied the chance of seeing Dean do the same thing in the show.
#7: Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)
Now you can't even keep him on the screen! The 3D aspect of this movie was always kind of stupid for those of us who first caught it on VHS and didn't have that to look at. Now you can actually watch it in 3D and while it's still dumb, at least it doesn't feel as pointless. 3D back then was meant to be a fun gimmick, and what better franchise to use that gimmick then a series about some guy killing teenagers? That's one thing horror movies are getting right these days, they know how to make the 3D showings fun. That's why My Bloody Valentine and Final Destination 5 remain the best uses of the format.
But for the movie itself, I used to like it a lot more than I do now. I still enjoy it, but it's not really holding up as well as the other entries in the franchise. You have the same usual problems that plague any generic slasher (dumb characters, etc) but now you also have a pretty terrible heroine and her 40 year old boyfriend. Okay, I don't think he's actually supposed to be forty, but there's no way Rick is supposed to be a young adult. The dude looks ancient compared to everyone else. But it's still a fun slasher movie, and a lot better than some of the ripoffs that were plaguing the 80s.
#6: Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981)
Part 2 falls just shy of being even better than the original. It misses it by just a little bit. This is the movie that introduces us to Jason, with a bag on his head and everything. This movie has a really strong heroine in Ginny (Amy Steel) and some side characters that are developed just enough to be more than worm food (although they still end up as worm food). This is just a strong sequel for a movie that wasn't even intended to be a franchise in the first place.
Jason is pretty good here in his debut outing. He dispatches Alice (the sole survivor of part one) early, to let us know this movie isn't playing around. He later kills a guy in a wheelchair. You've got to give Jason credit, he doesn't care if you're handicapped or pregnant, he'll kill you just the same. Not even Freddy kills unborn babies. Sure, he tries to feed souls to them in an attempt to be reborn, but he doesn't kill them.
#5: Friday the 13th (1980)
"But the original is a classic!", you'll say. "Why the hell isn't it number one?" Because I don't like it as much as the others, and it's not nearly as fun as the next four. It's true, Friday the 13th is a classic, and it has a lot of things working in its favor. Tom Savini's special effects are wonderful, as is Harry Manfredini's score. Adrienne King is a good choice to play the final girl and Betsy Palmer is just fantastic as Jason's mother. She goes from nice den mother to psychopath at the drop of a dime and it's wonderful. The ensuing ten minute long fight between the two is even better.
But getting there, at times, can be a bit of a chore. I really can't tell you who any of the other characters are outside of Kevin Bacon. Say what you will about Jason Takes Manhattan, but at least I knew the difference between the wannabe rock star and the one who tries to seduce Charles. The characters here literally are the definition of cookie-cutter. Luckily they're dispatched creatively and we get an awesome ending to make up for it.
#4: Freddy vs Jason (2003)
For ten years horror fans were waiting for this. Actually even longer, considering Paramount wanted to do it for The New Blood. But Jason Goes to Hell teased everybody, and writer after writer attempted to put something together to get these two to fight. In terms of match-ups, you'd think Jason would be a better foil for Michael, but then you wouldn't have nearly as entertaining of a fight. I'd rather watch Jason fight the guy with personality then someone that's almost just like him.
The reason this movie works isn't the characters, the story or the direction (although the latter is nice too). No, what works here is when we actually get to see the two horror legends do battle at Crystal Lake in an absolutely bloody battle. Jason and Freddy bleed buckets and you really feel like these two are giving it everything they got. For a fight that good, plus the awesome bed kill in the beginning, I can forgive casting Kelly Rowland and replacing Kane Hodder.
#3: Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)
This used to be my favorite, but I've grown to love the top two a little more and this one a little less. Time is funny that way. There are some minor problems, such as the MPAA completely missing the point of these movies and cutting out all of the gore. It's funny, because this movie would get a PG-13 today if the boobs were cut out. Compared to the Saws and Hostels of the world, Jason's sixth outing is fairly tame.
But you've got to love this one's creativity. Jason has never looked his best than he does in this movie. He's rotted, decayed and looks like a well placed kick could cause him to tumble into dust. But he just keeps coming. You drop a house on him, and then blow that house up, and he still comes after you. Kane Hodder made his debut here and gave Jason a bit of an angry personality, which just makes his final battle with Carrie clone Tina all the more fun. I crack up every time I see Jason's face before she lights him on fire. He's like, "oh you better NOT".
#2: Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter (1984)
Jason dies for good this time, and he'd stay dead for two years. You can't really blame them for bringing him back, but at the same time, what a way to go out. Jason was still human at this point, and before Tom Savini offs him in gruesome fashion, the man gets his hand hacked, a tv broken on his head and Corey Feldman playing mind games with him. Who know a ninja turtle would be Jason's greatest foe?
This movie also has a lot of unintentional humor, but it's supplemented by such good kills and likable characters that I don't mind it as much. The entire Jarvis family is actually as developed as you can get in these movies, and because of that I like them. I think the movie does too, because 2/3 of them get to live and you don't even see the mother actually die. Then there's Crispin Glover and his wacky dancing. He really is the gift that keeps on giving in this movie.
#1: Friday the 13th: Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)
"Some folks have a strange idea of entertainment. This is the one that should be the template for all Jason movies past and present. Here we get the conclusion of the Tommy Jarvis saga and the Friday film of them all. It has everything. It has gory kills, fun comedic moments, three-dimensional (yes, fully developed!) characters and much more. The movie's even shot better than the other films in the series. It looks more like a bigger budget Hollywood film than a rinky-dink slasher.
Thom Mathews is a great Tommy, and really takes all of the hard work others put into the character and cements it here with a fine performance. The best work, however, comes from David Kagen as Sherriff Garris. In any other Jason movie, this character would have had zero development and just come off as an asshole. Garris does not. He's layered and well-written. All Garris wants to do is protect his town and his daughter. He dies trying, but there was always a part of me that actually roots for him to just kick Jason's ass before he gets one of the nastiest deaths in the franchise. That's more than I can say for 99% of anyone else that Jason's killed.
That's it for me. What's your favorite Jason movie? Let me know here on or my Twitter. Next week I start a three part countdown of the thiry most annoying characters in horror. Possibly even more than that if I can think of more. See you next week for part one!

I know it's your opinion but part 6 is the one which drowned the series for good. It had a very poor return in BO and basically turned Jason into a joke and silly character. Probably they were trying to mock Freddy-mania which was running wild at that time.
I mean smiley kill??? come-on. Say what you want about Part 5, but it was actually tried to be serious and had a frightening feel to it, but part 6 no.. just no. Self referential humor (a character basically mentions Jason by his name on camera) and a lot of fourth wall breaking moments..
Really glad that New Blood followed the movie and brought back the seriousness. It was a very underrated effort and Kane was just awesome.
and how the hell Final Chapter is Not NO.1???? it had everything we could hope for an ultimate Jason movie. Lots of gore, innovative kills, boobies, Tom Savini's excellent make-up..
You're just biased man.

Part VI is definitely the best, for me followed by IV and I always have soft spots for III and X.
And yes, V is the worst. Here is how I'd rank em:
VI
IV
III
FVJ
I
VII
Remake
X
VIII
II
IX
V

Other than the placement of Jason Takes Manhattan, I totally agree with this list. And had that movie not been plagued by budget issues that saw nearly all the New York scenes be scrapped, it could have been a much more fun film.
Posted By: Nick M. (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 01:15 AM
Loving the love for Final Chapter, which I think never gets its due. Everything really is great, save the whole "he's killing me" line, of course.
I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Part III though. The final chase scene with Chris was great at keeping the high tension pace for the final 15-20 min. When 8-year-old me first watched this, I really didn't think any of them were surviving, which is what hooked me.

I was going to argue some of these choices but the fact that you put that moronic remake which was a complete insult to every Friday the 13th fan in the world shows that there's no point to even debating any of this. If you like that movie, you're not a fan of Friday the 13th and your opinion on the movies is made meaningless. Putting Freddy vs Jason above the original movie is just icing on the cake. You should be banned from the internet for this list.

Vason has it right. And why the fuck does Jason X and Jason Goes To Hell rank higher than Manhattan? At least Manhattan had that hot chick guitarist JJ Jarrett(senseless trivia moment, she went on to be the voice of Gohan in DBZ). And the reboot should really be higher on this list.
Posted By: Jeff Bayard (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 01:51 AM
Great lists, Part 6 is my favorite too for 2 reasons
1. Like you said, Sherrif Garris was the only murder victim I respcted cause he went down protecting his kid.
2. Thom Mathews is, was, and the only guy who talked shit (and I mean talked shit) to Jason and lived.
COME ON MAGITHEAD COME ONNNN!!!

Hasn't the "Top Friday the 13th Films" article been done like a million times on this site?
Posted By: Guest#8179 (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 01:59 AM
How the hell the remake ranked ahead of Jason X is beyond me...Jason X is cheesy bad goodness. The remake, outside of that one chick's amazing rack, is horrid. And Part II should be way higher; regardless of ripping of Bay of Blood, it's the most effective of the entire series. It's everything a slasher should be: nasty, gory and unforgiving. It gets that recipe right better than any other entry in the series.

"I know it's your opinion but part 6 is the one which drowned the series for good. It had a very poor return in BO and basically turned Jason into a joke and silly character. Probably they were trying to mock Freddy-mania which was running wild at that time."
Why do you suppose part 6 had such a poor box office return? Could it be the awfulness of part 5 turned people off from the series? Makes sense doesn't it.
Also "Freddy-mania" was NOT running wild in 1986, considering they were only on part 2 at that point.
Posted By: Zeuqserf27 (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 02:25 AM
Jason X is def the worst, 6 or 4 are def the best. Good article.
Posted By: D. (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 02:29 AM
Part 6 is my favorite as well. 4 and 7 follow in my personal rankings. Just fun movies!
I read that Jason's sack in part 2 was inspired by a movie called the Town that Dreaded Sundown. That movie any good or worth tracking down?
Posted By: cdunc83 (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 02:40 AM
Paramount wouldve been better of sticking with the template and director from six to continue the series. I hated that shit with the telepathic chick almost as much as jason getting toxic wasted.
My top three are 1. Jason Lives 2. Final Chapter and 3. Part 2
This was a great read, keep it up!
Posted By: MothershipChip (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 03:01 AM
@Vason Jorhees, it's his list based on his opinion...of course he's biased. So are you when you list your favourites you clod.
Also, how can 6 have drowned the series for good and then praise part 7 straight after it...not to mention that 5 movies featuring the character came out after it.
Poor box office? It made $19.5 million dollars off a budget of $3 million...It only did slightly less well than part 5, but still made almost 7 times it's budget back. Part 7 actually did worse than 6 at $19.1 million, so there goes that criticism.
Jason is treated well and has some bad ass kills, he's never treated as a joke at all. There were elements of humour sure, but never at the expense of the character. He get's the Frankenstein treatment to be brought back to life...how is that not awesome?
Posted By: dennett316 (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 03:16 AM
I've felt Part 6 is a bit overrated. They were trying to be meta and silly, but horror movies are never quite as clever as they think they are when they do this (Scream, Wes Craven's New Nightmare). B-movies are considerably more enjoyable when the don't try to be self-aware.
I'd probably give #1 to Part 3. Part 7 is fun, but suffered by being a bit too "clean".
Posted By: Guest (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 03:19 AM
I feel this article wouldn't exist if you agreed Part IV was the best one.
Posted By: Guest#1909 (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 03:55 AM
After watching all the Jason and Michael Myers movies in the span of one month, I have not been able to tell the difference between any of them.
But - Freddy vs. Jason does stand out, because at the time, it was the dream match up, and it is my default #1 when asked this question.
And finding 30 annoying Horror characters will be easy!!!!
Posted By: Ant-LOX (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 04:49 AM
4, 6 and 7 are probably the tops. FvsJ is fun too, and I have a definite soft spot for Jason X. I'd possibly even have that in the top 5.
Posted By: Ryushinku (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 04:53 AM
Final Chapter has always been my favorite. Corey Feldman kills off Jason for good. Cut-print. And we're done.
Jason X and Leprechaun in Space make for an amazing double header. Both of them are so wonderfully awful that you just can't help but love them.
Posted By: Commie (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 04:55 AM
Ugh, another hater of Part 5. I wish I had more time to explain the idea of it in depth and why it's long been my favorite. Part 6..the best? HA! That's a hoot. It's not even close. 4 is my second fave. JGTH is the worst with Jason X nearby
Posted By: Guest#9306 (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 04:58 AM
To me Friday the 13th is a series is sort of reconstruction of the more popular horror films of the past. The series falls under 4 distinct eras, 1&2 were inspired by the Italian gallo films of the 70's, a combination of style and mystery. 3-6 were inspired by the slashers of the late 70's-early 80's, the Halloween's, Burnings, and Prowlers and what not. 7,8,9 were more "fantasy" horror that came along in the mid to late 80's. The final films were really just remakes put into the vein of the series.
For me 1&2 are the perfect films. 2 is my favorite because it ad-hears to a strong three act story formula. I'm also very surprised you don't remember the characters in one because they fit the basic archetypes of slasher films. It has the Virgin(Alice), Jock(Bill), Friend(Marcie), Couple(Jack/Brenda), Jokester(Ned), and Father figure(Steve).
The only films that should be number one other than the structurally sound 1 & 2 is The Final Chapter which is a great film because it basically takes place in the one house and all horror films are better when the setting is grounded (NOES 3, Halloween 2, Thing, Alien).

Jason Goes to Hell is NOT a Friday the 13th movie. Magic daggers and body jumping demon slugs? Fuck that movie and anyone that likes it.
Posted By: Guest#0157 (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 05:13 AM
great read man! just finnished watching the series again myself recently...and I mostly agree, Takes Manhattan while still fun, is just about as brutal as it gets.
Posted By: ramone (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 05:21 AM
Yeah, I agree. I went to see Part 6 in the theater. It was cool. Way too much comedy. The intro to Juggernaut Jason, but not number one. Jason goes to Hell was utter crap and not even campy enough to be cool. The first 3 were the very best. Then, part 4 was very cool and he kills Crispin Clover. If only this was real life.
~My Rating~
Friday the 13th(1980) - B+
Part 2 - A
Part 3 - A+
Part 4 - A
Part 5 - D
Part 6 - C
Part 7 - F
Part 8 - C-
To Hell - F-
Jason X - B
Freddy
Vs Jason - C
Remake 2009 - B

Pfft. The series hadn't had a serious tone since its inception. And if it was trying to then it sucked at it.
The first three were distractingly badly made, with weak acting and awful characters, Part 6 at least functioned as a movie, and didn't spend like 20 minutes recapping the friggin' last one.
Posted By: Carlos (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 06:01 AM
I was never such a huge fan of this series since my introduction to it was through Jason X (even though that death scene where Jason smashes that doctors face was awesome)
I never found it scary but always went looking for more due to the promise of more nudity.
My favorite death scene has to be in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood where Dr Crews feeds Tina's mom to Jason in the woods I just burst into laughter thinking what an asshole
Posted By: DaMic (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 06:03 AM
personally, i'd swap 6 with 7.
i loved seeing Jason have some more-than-worthy competition and the comedy replaced with brutality.
pretty good list, tho. was nearly spot-on. :D
Posted By: i8mypants (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 06:49 AM
I can see your point about Part 6. That's when the series transitioned once and for all from horror to action. But it had to do that to stay relevant. Jason wasn't scary anymore and there was nothing mysterious about him. That tone is set early in all movies starting with 6, because you see JAson right from the start.
Posted By: Adam Herman (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 07:04 AM
I can agree with a lot of this list... but Jason Takes Manhattan is by far the worst... it should be 12. I'd put Jason goes to hell at 11 and then 5. I mean come one, the boobs on the girl who takes the shears to the eyes in Part 5 alone move that movie ahead of the other 2. The rest is fine until you get to the bottom. I love 4 & 6... but I have to give the clear edge to 4 as the best. Banana squeeze kill, Teddy bear, Corey Feldman, double mint twins of varying levels of promiscuity, Crispin Glover, Tom Slavini masks galore. Don't get me wrong... I love 6, but it really went over the line to the more cartoony side and had more laughs while 4 still maintains a genuine sense of dread.
Just my Penny times 2.

Part 2 is really great also, while Final Chapter is my favorite, I think the mythology of Jason developing is interesting. It is my second favorite.
Part 5 is not great, but is something different, which I somewhat appreciate.

Gotta say Jason goes to Hell is the worst since it gives Jason a mythology that never appeared before or since. 7 was pretty good but gotta dock it a lot of points for telekinetic resurrection of a body that hadnt been found or decomposed despite being in about 3 feet of water for a year. Dont know how high I would rate Freddy vs Jason as I think Ronny Yu's directing was terrible (the cast was pretty good but it was the worst acting Ive seen from each one of the main cast in any film or show) but the novelty of the fights and the return of the total dick Freddy probably makes it better than about half the F13ths. 6 is my fav and I would love to see Tommy Jarvis return to films if the sequal to the Freddy vs Jason vs Ash comic series ever sees the light of day on the big screen (for those that have read it--after Jason/Freddy/and Ash have a really awesome clash the sequal features those three plus most of the significant surviviors from each F13 and Nightmare in one epic crazy event. Tommy, Alice & Jacob (nightmare 4&5), Freddy's Daughter, Doctor Neal from Dream Warriors, the chick from New Blood and more. Pretty Awesome.

Opinions are like assholes... Everyone has got one... including this guy...
Part 7 is brutal.... It is by far the worst one in series... It was edited and cut to crap... I have a bootleg unedited version that is an improvement but this list is based off the theatrical releases...
Other then that it's a pretty good list... Number 4 and 6 would be a tie for first on my list.... I would also move Manhattan below Goes to Hell...

No way any of them were better than part IV! That was the only movie in the franchise that I felt everything was hitting on all cylInders. It arguabley had the best cast of the series as well! As for the rest, I really have to move part II up the list. I wasn't much of a fan of this one when I was younger but it has really grown on me as I've gotten older. I'd put the original and part III after those followed by VI and VII. As for the worst, wow, it's a tough call. If I never saw Jason Goes to Hell or Jason X again, I'd be totally OK with that! Both movies really came off like they were reaching. The basic idea of the franchise was what it was, don't mess with the formula!

"Crispin Glover and his wacky dancing. He really is the gift that keeps on giving in this movie."
LMAO. Oh god you got that right. My girlfriend and I watched that a few nights ago, (all but number 7 is on the free movies section of Xfinity, gotta watch them all someday), my first time watching "The Final Chapter" in quite awhile, and we cracked up at that dancing scene. I do love the 4th one, maybe the best (either the 4th or 6th like you), but I can't stand Tommy's sister, or whatever she is. Jason is killing her little boyfriend, even yells "he's killing me" and not trying to rape him like she must of thought, and the bitch doesn't run out the house, she actually runs back downstairs. She boards the door to her house but doesn't turn off the lights so he can't see her through the window, I swear it comes off like she was asking Jason to kill her.
Glad to hear someone else liked the remake. Based on the comments, no one actually explains why they dislike the remake, but I enjoyed it. Great column, really enjoyed it.

I never understood all the hate for Jason Takes Manhattan. It is, of course, no masterpiece, but to me it's a campy good time, and was definitely -not- the worst Jason movie ever.

WAIT, how the hell can you put part 6 Jason Lives over the BEST part...Part 4 The Final Chapter??? I just don't get it...6 was good but 4 was superior, and honestly the original shouldn't be on this list, as JASON IS NOT the killer.

A friend I recently re-watched the Friday the 13th series recently, and I cant really argue much here. I'm a bit ashamed to admit however, I actually enjoyed X far more than I should. I had that, "so bad its hilarious" vibe to it. It also had some of my favorite deaths.

I can't decide what my fave Friday the 13th movie is, but the ending to part 1 still gives me the hibbie jibbies! I don't know why it is,even when I know its coming it still creeps me out! That was the greatest thing to ever happen in the history of that franchise!

The real answer is none of them, right? Right? Because Friday the 13th is a bad series?
Eh, ok, I loved the first 20 minutes of that Friday the 13th remake, and enjoyed Freddy vs. Jason way more than I should have, but other than those, I never found any other Friday film remotely watchable. But that's probably just me.

Funny you put up this list because I just made Jason my wallpaper. I always liked part III since it was the slasher: kills, gore, sex, funny humor sprinkled in here and there.

... my only problem with this list (Aside from the whole personalized faction-fractions about the ratings of VII, IV and VI), is the unconscionable lack of a clip for VII's intro:

No matter where you rank the film, this sequence is chicken soup for the slasher fan's soul. I think I was nine years old the first time I saw it; I still feel like that, watching it now.

Part 7 is made better simply for the fact that Jason looked so badass. Clothing, spine, face, by far the best makeup ever!

I love your top 4. Perfect order, too. Though I think the remake/reboot should be a little higher. I'd take it over the original anyday.

I saw one other comment on here that echoed my opinion...Debi Sue Voorhees's breasts automatically give Part V a Top 10 spot.

I'd come pretty close to agreeing with all of the list, except I might've placed a Kane Hodder Jason movie at the top, because of all the things I love about the Friday the 13th series, I loved what Hodder brought to it the most (Final Chapter was memorable because of the kickass Savini gore FX and the quirky teenagers, but not really Jason himself, IMO). He gave Jason an actual personality - a pissed off, unthinking, seething rage that no other Jason actor had pulled off quite as well (though to be fair, C.J. Graham did come close to that in part VI). If New Blood hadn't been cut to ribbons by the MPAA, I think it'd be a much tougher argument as to which Friday movie was the best ever.
Kane Hodder's movies also had more classic over-the-top awesome Jason deaths: The Sleeping Bag in part VII, the head punch in VIII, The girl ripped in half in Jason Goes to Hell, and the LEGENDARY liquid nitrogen death in Jason X.
Oh, and for a good bit of fun? Watch New Blood with the commentary on. Hodder is hilarious, and John Carl Buechler rips the MPAA and censorship in general a new asshole.

I still say Part 8 is the hardest to sit through.
Posted By: jerry horror (Guest) on January 26, 2012 at 08:01 PM
Toughest thing to sit through in Part 8; the nightclub "suspense" scene. So, Jason is Super Jason AND he moonlights as a DJ/Lighting specialist? Uh...yeah.
I LOVE part 2. Easily the best sequel.
The reboot is great for two reasons; well, three if you count the baby oil as the third reason! :)

I kept waiting for Trish and Rob to get it on in Part 4, wanted to see Trish's Pigeons.
