Two Tivos To Paradise 02.03.12: Super Bowl, Kim Kardashian, Shameless, Louis CK, Game of Thrones, Chuck
Posted by Al Norton on 02.03.2012
Thoughts on 30 Rock's new season and the Chuck finale, news on new TV projects for Louis CK, Kim Kardashian, Kevin Bacon, J.J. Abrams and Mark Harmon, a guide to Super Bowl weekend, tons of pilot news and more!
Hello friends. Very happy to put this week behind me, one that found me losing my money clip at the grocery store on Monday. Aside from the hassle of cancelling a few credit cards and having to go to the registry to get a new license, I happen to have $350 in cash on me at the time (no, I don't normally carry that kind of money) as well as $100 in Stop & Shop and Dunkin Donuts gift cards. I also had a cart full of groceries. Thankfully the kids weren't with me or it could have been really ugly ("Daddy, why are we leaving without the food?!?!"). Also, the money clip was engraved, a gift from Mrs. Tivo a few years back. All in all, a lousy week, but since I look at column day as the end of the week, it's over now!
As a reminder, there will be no TTTP next Friday as Mrs. Tivo and I will be away on our first kids-free vacation, enjoying a few days at a resort in the Dominican Republic. I am sure you will find a way to live without me but in the interim you should visit the TTTP Facebook page as I will probably post a few updates there (especially if any major TV stories break), plus that's where you and your fellow TV fans can discuss what you just watched. We're trying to create a community where people can come and share their TV-related thoughts without fear of being torn apart by others. Hey, don't get me wrong, we do love us some snark, but, as an example, Big Bang Theory fans and I can have a fun back and forth with each respecting the other's right to their opinion. Thoughtful discourse is our goal, so come join us!
Here it is, the Game of Thrones season two trailer…
Hmm, what do you think Lifetime is trying to sell here?
We had a teaser trailer a few weeks back but here is a full length look at HBO's Game Change…
We found news in a hopeless place.
You A Bad Girl, and Your Friends Bad, Too, You Got The Swag Sauce, You Drippin' Swagu
Super Bowl weekend is upon us, meaning there is a LOT of football related television to watch over the next 72 or so hours…
*The NFL Network is Patriots heavy tonight, with Brady 6 (a look at the 6 QB's taken ahead of future Hall of Famer Tom Brady in the 2000 draft) at 8pm followed by the incredibly entertaining two part Bill Belichick focused episode of A Football Life at 9pm. It gets much better for Giants fans at 11 when they re-air Super Bowl XLII, where New York brought New England's perfect season to an end.
*The NFL Network airs the announcements of the new class for the NFL Hall of Fame live at 5:30pm on Saturday.
*NFL Honors airs 9pm on Saturday. The inaugural edition of this awards show is hosted by Alec Baldwin and features a musical performance by Lenny Kravitz. The special is preceded by Super Bowl Saturday Night over on the NFL Network.
*The NFL Network gets a head start on the pregame with their NFL Game Day Morning beginning at 9am and running until 5:30pm.
*The Official Super Bowl XLVI Pre-game Show begins at 1pm on NBC.
*Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl VIII is set for 3pm. Maybe you hate football but love dogs, maybe you love football and can't wait until a little after 6pm for the action to start; either way, it usually generates a surprisingly large audience.
*And then there is the game itself, Super Bowl XLVI at 6pm, with the Giants of New York taking on the Patriots of New England. Kelly Clarkson sings the National Anthem while husband and wife duo Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert do America the Beautiful. Madonna performs at halftime. Pats by 7, by the way.
A huge part of the viewing experience is always the commercials, and here is one generating a lot of buzz….
I am looking forward to what NBC put together for their America's Got Talent commercial that features Howard Stern.
*After the game, and the post-game, NBC airs the season premiere of The Voice.
This is kind of a big deal for NBC as it was far and away their biggest hit in 2011 and they need it to have legs to launch them into 2012. Along with the excellent Smash (see below for review), they could also use the post-Voice timeslot to preview new series the way Fox does with American Idol. At the time The Voice premiered last year American Idol was in the middle of a pretty boring season, plus they had the whole swiveling chairs thing going for them; now it's just under a year later, we've already had a full season of The X Factor and Idol is still in its early rounds, and expectations are much, much higher. I am sure the post-Super Bowl numbers will be outrageous but the real key will be how it does the next night, and especially the following Monday.
*Late Night with Jimmy Fallon has been coming from Indianapolis since Wednesday, with a live episode set for Sunday night; Adam Sandler and Andy Samburg are lined up as guests for that night, with the episode scheduled to start at 11:35 but that's only if the game doesn't run long (Late Night will begin after the local news cast ends, whatever time that is, likely around midnight or so).
I Don't Believe What You Did To Me, Down On My Knees And I Need To Break Free
Lifetime announced that Kim Kardashian has signed on for a multi-episode stint on Drop Dead Diva's upcoming fourth season. While most of her TV work has been playing-and-or-being herself (a CSI:NY turn from 2009 being an exception), this will find her playing an actual scripted character.
I am not sure how big a following The various Kardashians and/or Drop Dead Diva has among my readers but I thought this was worth mentioning because I think 2012 will play a very large role in determining just how much longer Kim and her family's reign on the world of pop culture will continue. She has a large role in the upcoming Tyler Perry film The Marriage Counselor and that combined with her Diva gig will likely either lead to a lot more acting work for her or put to rest any ideas that she might have a future in that line of work.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians and its spinoffs continue to perform well for E! – the finale of the latest series became the third most watched telecast in the network's history - , and if there is any way they could convince her to do a Bachelorette-type relationship they would easily break network ratings records, but at some point Kim being Kim will start to lose its hold on the American psyche, so she's smart to try to access her future career options now, when it doesn't appear like a desperation move.
Like A Coin In Your Mint, I's Dented And I'm Spent With High Treason

CBS
Louis CK and Spike Feresten met as writers on The Late Show with David Letterman in the early 90's. 13 years ago, when CK was doing stand up and Ferenston was writing for Seinfeld, they came up with a sitcom called Boomtown, about a group of 20something friends pursuing their career dreams despite having no money. CBS passed on it and the project died. Last fall it was rediscovered and reshopped, and after CBS bought it, CK and Feresten did a rewrite, which led to the network ordering a pilot for the show late last week….Partners is a comedy about two long time best friends and the way that friendship effects their romantic relationships from Will & Grace producers David Kohan and Max Mutchnick. This is the third time the duo has tried to launch this project, with previous pilots at CBS and ABC not getting picked up…Friend Me is about two best friends who move from Bloomington, ID to Los Angeles to try to start new and exciting lives in the big city…Greg Berlanti's fourth pilot order of the season is an untitled comedy about a guy who realizes his long time best friend Wendy is the girl of his dreams and has to figure out how to win her heart with the complications that they are business partners and he genuinely likes her current boyfriend…Goodfellas writer Nicholas Pileggi is teaming with Greg Walker (Without a Trace) for a drama based on the life of Las Vegas Sheriff Ralph Lamb, a true cowboy who ran the town in the 60's and 70's and had famous run ins with the mob as well as the Hell's Angels. James Mangold (Walk the Line) will direct the pilot as well as join those two as executive producers…Christopher Columbus will executive produce and direct Abblebaum, based on the Mommy Track Mystery series of novels, about a former public defender turned stay-at-home Mom who starts taking private investigation cases to avoid boredom…Ilene Chaiken, who created The L Word, is working with Joel Silver on Quean, where a young female hacker teams with an police detective from Oakland to solve crimes…
Fox
Kevin Bacon will star in an untitled drama from Kevin Williamson (Scream, Dawson's Creek, The Vampire Diaries) as a retired FBI profiler who discovers a serial killer who is using the internet and other technology to assemble an army of fellow killers. Bacon's deal calls for a 15 episode season as opposed to the standard 22; that shorter run has been the cable model for some time now and allows for a network to sign bigger names as it leaves them free to do other projects…The last pilot McG directed was Chuck but he will return to helm Guilty, a legal drama from Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim…John Stamos is in talks to star in the comedy pilot Little Brother, playing the title character, an ex-con who an older, more straight-laced guy finds out is the brother he never knew. The script is by Mike Royce (Men of a Certain Age, Everybody Loves Raymond)… Mindy Kaling (The Office) will write, executive produce, and star in a comedy pilot about an OB/GYN trying to balance her professional and personal lives…
NBC
Everyone knew it was going to happen but NBC made their pilot order of The New Normal official; the comedy is from Ryan Murphy and Allison Adler (Glee, Chuck) and is about a gay couple and the woman who is going to carry their baby. Andrew Rennells, recently nominated for a Tony for The Book of Mormon, is set to star…Bad Girls is a drama from John Wells (Shameless, Southland, ER, The West Wing), an adaptation of a UK series set inside a women's prison…Supernatural creator Erik Kripke and J.J. Abrams have teamed up for Revolution, an action series where a group of people try to find their families after all the energy sources in the world suddenly stop working, sending the planet into chaos. Abrams…The Selection is an adaptation of a to-be-released set of fantasy novels, a romance set 300 years in the future where a woman is chosen to compete to become the next Queen…Joey Dakota is a time travel-musical-romance about a women making a documentary film about an aging rock star who goes back in time to the 90's where the two of them fall in love. It's based on a hugely popular Israeli series called Danny Hollywood. None other than Mark Harmon is on board as an executive producer…

THURSDAY
Not only did The Big Bang Theory top American Idol in demos for the second week in a row (the only two times that has happened in Idol history) but it also beat it in total viewers…Overall Idol had the top total viewer numbers for the night (and the week) with 17 million…The Finder was up 30% from last week's 20+% gain, so it is benefiting from the Idol lead-in… The 8pm 30 Rock tied last week's series low and the 9pm version was down about 30% from what The Office did in that spot the week before…The Firm was up against reruns on CBS and ABC and only picked up 10% in the demos…
FRIDAY
The series finale of Chuck hit season highs in totals and demos…Fringe was up just a bit in totals and demos…Shark Tank won 8pm in the demos for a second week in a row…The season premiere of Spartacus: Vengeance was up 10% from the prequel mini-series last year and 66% from the series premiere… Primetime: What Would You Do? won the night in demos…
SUNDAY
NBC's coverage of the NFL Pro Bowl won the night in totals and demos, down double digits in the latter from last year but still the second most watched Pro Bowl of the last 10 years…Once Upon a Time had the night's best scripted demos and its largest total viewership since November…Undercover Boss was up 40% in total viewers (tops for the night with 13.1 million) and 30% in demos. The Good Wife enjoyed that strong lead in to be up double digits in totals and demos… The season finale of Kourtney & Kim Take New York was the third most watched telecast in E! history in terms of total viewers AND demos…The Real Housewives of Atlanta put up a season high while they became the second most watched episode in Real Housewives franchise history. That lead-in helped Watch What Happens Live jump 41% from last Sunday…Big night for Showtime as Shameless (+7%), House of Lies (+41%), and Californication (+17%) were up week-to-week…The series premiere of Luck was watched by 1.1 million, although the 1.1 million who watched when it previewed in January have to factored in as well…
MONDAY
The 100th episode of Gossip Girl was up 23% in total viewers to be the second most watched episode of the season. Lead out Hart of Dixie was up 20%...Who's Still Standing hit a season/series high in total viewers…Alcatraz was down 8% in viewers and 10% in demos for week 3, not bad but not enough to make a second season a lock, either. Lead-in House was down 10% in the demos but ranked behind only a Two and a Half Men rerun in that measure for the night…
TUESDAY Glee was up 20% in total viewers and 16% in the demos, with said demos being the best of the night…Ringer was down 14% in total viewers and tied a season/series low in the demos, proving once again that the strategy of giving a new show almost six weeks off DOES NOT WORK…An NCIS rerun was the most watched show of the night with just under 13 million total viewers…Unforgettable won 10pm in totals and demos…Key & Peele was Comedy Central's most watched series premiere since 2009, with the season premiere of Tosh.0 providing a large lead-in audience. Tosh.0's numbers for men 18-24 and 18-34 make pretty much every network, big 5 and otherwise, drool with envy…
WEDNESDAY American Idol dominated the night but the real story was that it was down 9% from last week and a whopping 32% from this week last year…Whitney and Are You There, Chelsea? were up 21% in the demos, although both finished third in their timeslot…One Tree Hill matched last week's numbers

Berlanti wrote the script, about a former first lady (divorced from the former President) who currently serves as Secretary of State while also trying to keep her family above water…GSN has ordered a pilot for The Great American Bible Challenge, a game show that quizzes contestants on their knowledge of the Bible…Spike placed orders for three new reality series; Full Bounty (bounty hunter competition series, 10 episodes), Tattoo Nightmares (the story of people who got tattoos they regretted and are now trying to have removed, six episodes), and Rat Bastards (guys who hunt Louisiana swamp rats). That's the case with Showtime's Masters of Sex, with Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan just cast as the leads. Sheen may be my single favorite Craig Ferguson guest and is best known to American TV audiences as Liz Lemon's soul mate Wesley Snipes. He has been nominated for several awards for playing British Prime Minister Tony Blair on several occasions, and he also was in a couple of the Twilight movies. Caplan can be seen currently on New Girl and is forever loved here for her work on Party Down and The Class…
Turns Out Not Where But Who You're With That Really Matters
(The Best of What's Around aka The Best Thing I've Watched In The Last Seven Days)…
After five seasons and 90+ episodes, Chuck came to an end Friday night with two hours that were a fantastic reward for long term fans, including some almost scene-by-scene recreations of the pilot. There were old friends making surprise appearances, a huge tip of the (neon) hat to the role Subway played in the show's success, and of course, there was Jeffster, not only playing a great 80's song but also playing the hero, too.
My personal highlights of the last hour was Awesome covering the baby's eyes when Chuck's Mom had her gun drawn, Casey's totally in-character showing of emotion with a great Russian hug for Chuck, and of course, that last scene on the beach.
Yvonne Strahovski has a very bright future in front of her as she has shown she can handle comedy, romance, and general bad-assness with ease, and in that final hour she showed just how much range she has; I bought it when she told Chuck she didn't remember him (or them) and I believed it when she was laughing so much she was crying when Chuck was telling her stories of their past. Regardless of whether or not you believe that Sarah got her memories back from that final kiss, it was clear she wanted to get her memories back, and that was the key to that moment.
Chuck may indeed live on (when the final episode hits DVD it will be roughly 10 minutes longer) with a TV movie down the line, and hopefully some smart network will pick up reruns of the show soon (Hello, Syfy and/or USA), but regardless of what the future holds there is no question that the finale, like the entire series, was worth the investment of time, laughter, tears, and
People Say I'm Crazy Doing What I'm Doing. Well, They Give Me All Kinds Of Warnings To Save Me From Ruin
What's flashed before my eyes the last seven days…
My favorite number from a strong episode of Glee this week…30 Rock has made me laugh this season but I still come away with the feeling that they are trying a bit too hard, or maybe that the writers are sitting down to write a "30 Rock episode" instead of a good script. Again, there were some inspired moments last week, especially in the first of the two episodes – Kelsey Grammar was fantastic and Will Arnett showed just how great he is by giving such a strong contrast to his work on Up All Night – but the second episode, with the page program being eliminated and Liz and Jenna's friendship that really fell flat. To me a little Jenna goes a long way…I've been enjoying The Finder WAY more than I thought I would as it demonstrates genuine quirky charm as opposed to something a group of writer's thought equaled charming. There have been a few glaring issues – last Thursday's episode featured a twist anyone with a pair of eyes could see coming, not to mention a time shift from night time to mid-afternoon in back-to-back scenes because it fit the visuals better – but overall I am a fan and it's been season passed…Greatly enjoyed Inside Comedy on Showtime; I love when some can make the crew laugh, and you could hear a lot of off-screen laughter during the Don Rickles portion of the episode…The Soup continues to make me laugh throughout the entire 30 minutes, using guest stars as well as any show since The Muppets…Four episodes in and I am loving House of Lies in a big way…This has been far and away Top Chef's least interesting season ever, with no particularly interesting personalities nor any original spins on familiar challenges. I didn't like the cook-in style of the opening hour and things haven't really gotten better since…I thought Neal McDonough and Mykelti Williamson would be more than enough Big Bad for Justified's third season but damn if Pruitt Taylor Vince didn't go and raise the stakes a bit in episode three. I wrote this on our FB page this week and I'll say it again here because it's true; I understand someone watching the show, not liking it, and giving up – I think it's easily one of the best on TV but hey, personal taste is personal taste – but I can't for the life of me fathom a guess as to why someone who watches television wouldn't give Justified a shot…I laughed out loud during the premiere of Key & Peele on Comedy Central, with the sketch comedy show having way more hits than misses during its first episode. Season passed…
TV Pick Of The Week
While it may seem like Smash has been coming out forever, it won't be until Monday night that the masses can finally see the opening hour (the pilot has been available on-line for sometime). The drama follows the creative process behind a the making of a Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. Emmy winner Debra Messing, Oscar & Golden Globe winner Anjelica Houston, Katharine McPhee, Jack Davenport, and Megan Hilty star as we see the action from the points of view of the writers, the director, the financial backers, and the actors. Yes, there is singing, most of it coming in the context of the musical-within-the-series, and it's also quite funny at time.
Obviously a series about the inner workings of a Broadway show isn't subject matter that is going to grab everyone but it's a well written, well acted show, and said subject matter is certainly different from standard TV fare. Smash is highly recommended by this page!
Don't miss the series premiere of Smash, Monday at 10pm on NBC.

Other viewing options from the next seven days…
*Who Do You Think You Are? begins its third season tonight at 8pm on NBC with Martin Sheen tracing his roots.
*Four words: John Stamos, Lifetime movie. Secrets of Eden (Saturday, 8pm) may be one of the year's earliest guilty pleasures.
*I have not seen the pilot for The River (Tuesday, 9pm, ABC) but critics whose opinions I trust are raving, and the trailer below makes it seem pretty damn creepy, so I am more than ready to dive in (see what I did there?)…
*Nat Geo's Doomsday Preppers (Tuesday, 9pm) is a reality show that looks at survivalists making plans for worst case scenarios. Hoarders with a purpose, if you will.
*The great Jane Curtin joins the cast of Unforgettable (CBS) Tuesday at 10pm.
*Wednesday is high quality actor guest star night on ABC's comedies, with Greg Kinnear visiting Modern Family (8pm) and Lone Star's James Wolk playing Max's former (and future?) boyfriend on Happy Endings.
*Neither team is off to a fantastic start but Lakers – Celtics (8pm, Thursday, TNT) is still Lakers – Celtics.
