FIVE – Did The Avengers Hurt Battleship?
Peter Berg recently spoke about Battleship being considered a flop, and essentially blamed The Avengers for the failure of his project. Battleship had a budget of $209 million, but has only been able to make $300 million total. Here is Berg's explanation of things…
The movie kicked butt internationally, but we kind of ran into a wall when 'Avengers' refused to go away. 'The Avengers' outperformed everything. It was impossible for 'Battleship' to get any oxygen. "I would have loved to have come out three weeks before 'The Avengers' domestically, like we did internationally. We did OK, but in hindsight — which my grandmother used to say is worth about a bucket of spit — we would have [released the movie] ahead of 'The Avengers,' not realizing it would have become, I think, the second biggest film in history behind 'Avatar.'
Now, a quick clarification, The Avengers is still #3 behind Avatar and Titanic. Now, as to his opinion, he is essentially right. The Avengers did kick the ass of Battleship all around the planet. He did run into a wall called The Avengers, a juggernaut that was going to do big business. But if we want to be honest here, he needs to blame Universal, not The Avengers. Universal is the one that refused to move Battleship, even though industry experts suggested that Universal make the move. The Avengers had so much behind it, the films leading into it, the media blitz, the stars; it was going to make close to $1 billion for sure just because of that. But it did even more, people did see it multiple times and no one cared about Battleship.
Another stumbling block to Battleship was that IT WAS CALLED BATTLESHIP! I mean really now, the international audience didn't seem to care, but I know here in the US, people did nothing but mock the title of the film. Add into the fact that it appeared to be, in the opinion of some, a bad mash-up of Independence Day and Transformers. This movie may have been an awesome story, it could have had Oscar caliber performances, but the way it was marketed, people just couldn't get behind it. Add into that all that Universal wanted a Michael Bay style film with a lot of EXPLOSIONS and special effects, Berg's voice is never really heard in the film. There was a lot against this movie, just not The Avengers.
FOUR – Who Is The Sexiest Woman in the WhedonVerse?
I am a big fan of Joss Whedon, and the shows that he has created. Listen guys, I do not hide the fact that deep down, no mater what happens in my life, at the heart of it, I am a GEEK. When I make fun of geeks, I make fun of myself. I mean, come on, I write about TV and movies along with hot checks, and my two favorite universes are the Star Trek Universe and the WhedonVerse. And you know what? I am absolutely fine with that, because it makes me happy. So, with that all being said, someone previously mentioned a tournament, and since Goose already did the Tournament of Bang, I have to come up with something else, to please the people. SO starting next week, we answer the question…
Who Is The Sexiest Woman in the WhedonVerse?
That's what we shall find out. Starting next week, in addition to the regular VS feature, we will begin the tournament. I will discuss the potential entrants with some colleges (including THE GOOSE), and will debut the bracket next week. We will go through the tournament, likely with some play in bouts since I have a feeling we will decide on more than 16. Not only will the winner be crowned the "Queen of the WhedonVerse," but she will also be inducted into the Hall of Bang. Next week it all begins folks, more 5 & 1 fun just for you! I will obviously take some suggestions as to who should be included, but lets all understand things, I will be choosing 16-18 ladies for this, because I want to end this before I am eligible for social security. If they still have that when I get old.
THREE – BATMAN TO MAKE BANK: GEEKS TO CRY
You know what, I love when FANBOYS cry. I really hate to say that, but look at that picture above. That's Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, a woman who has done nothing to anyone reading this column, but she gets treated like the ANTI-CHRISTI for getting cast as Catwoman. That safe up there, that is where we shall store the tears of the fanboys from around the word and drink them like liquid bliss.
Listen, here is the deal, people like the Nolan Batman movies. They make money. They are different from the comics. They are not exactly what I want. They are not exactly what you want. Not every movie is perfect.
GET OVER IT
I am so sick of hearing about Bane's mask sucking, Anne Hathaway's cat ears being 5 degrees off, Bale's "annoying voice" or any of that shit. Seriously, it is to the point that some of you LIVE to bash this film. Please relax, this is a movie, not a live altering experience. Also, fans of the movie, can you calm down on the crying about the box office. The Dark Knight Rises will make bank, it will do well and it will add to an already profitable franchise. But it will be next to impossible for it to beat The Avengers. That has nothing to do with quality, it has to do with the fact that The Avengers had the 3D advantage, while The Dark Knight Rises will only have IMAX. That's all there is to it, so sit back, relax and enjoy the movie. Seriously, if I hear one more geek cry about Bane's mask… I mean, did you really want this again?
Seriously, lets all shut up, and if you're a fan, go have fun. If you're not, no one is forcing you to go and spend your money on the film.
TWO – BEST AND WORST OF THE WEEK
BEST OF THE WEEK – FIRST IMAGE FROM MAN WITH THE IRON FIST: You know something, I know next to NOTHING about the film The Man With The Iron Fist. It stars RZA Russell Crowe, Jamie Chung, Lucy Liu and Pam Grier and is about a blacksmith (RZA) in feudal China who makes weapons for a small village and is put in the position where he must defend himself and his fellow villagers. Yeah, that sounds nice and all, but the real reason I am talking about this is because they have released an image from the film. This movie may suck, but I love the first image, which you can see here. Look at that. THAT IS AN EYE BEING REMOVED FROM A HEAD! AN EYE! Yeah, that about made my day.
WORST OF THE WEEK – HOLLYWOOD STARS COMPLAINING ABOUT FAME; FIRST WORLD FUCKING PROBLEMS: This is one thing that has always bothered me. No do not get me wrong, I am sure at times it sucks being a super popular and rich person. You can't do the basic things that everyone else can do without savages surrounding you for quotes and pictures, I get that. So we have Andrew Garfield, the new Spider-man, complaining about "liking to struggle" as an actor and being disappointed once you reach a dream because it's not always what you expected. Well let me get my tissues. Just because you reached a major goal of yours, doesn't mean we're all going to cry for you man. I am sure you wipe you tears and ass with $100 bills, but I simply have a hard time feeling too bad for this kid. I am happy that he is living a dream, but don't get all emo about it.
ONE – WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND
#1 – Saturday 3PM – 3AM on Discovery Channel – Dual Survivor Marathon: I love survival shows, while many are insanely staged, they are both fun an educational. Discovery has a marathon of Dual Survivor on Saturday. The show features Survival experts Cody Lundin and Dave Canterbury, who in their own way, show how the right skills and some creative thinking can keep you alive. Cody Lundin is the founder, director, and lead instructor of the Aboriginal Living Skills School, teaches primitive living skills, modern outdoor survival skills, urban preparedness, and homesteading and does NOT wear any kind of footwear. has more than 20 years of experience and personal training from both a civilian and military standpoint and has a military background. Two very different views on survival, and the personality differences make for fun TV.
#2 – Saturday at 8PM ET on WMAX – The Color of Money: The classic 1986 film, starring Paul Newman as Eddie "Fast Eddy" Felson, a former pool player forced into retirement by gangsters (as seen in The Hustler) finds himself, self-respect, and finally, redemption when he enters a relationship with young pool player Tom Cruise very similar to his own early career. As they travel together, Fast Eddy realizes how much he had lost, and can see the inevitable finale of their relationship as history begins to repeat itself. In an effort to avert tragedy, Eddy severs their relationship, and returns to his first love, pool. Finally, in a big Atlantic City tournament, Cruise returns the favor, and teaches Eddy the final lesson that allows him to finish his quest of re-discovery. This is essential viewing.
#3 – Sunday at 3PM on SyFy - Piranhaconda: I LOVE BAD MOVIES THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE BAD AND SILLY. Piranhaconda is one of these glorious films. "Part fish! Part snake! All killer! A hybrid creature – half piranha and half anaconda — attacks a movie crew on location near her nest when her egg is stolen. Now they must outrun and kill the deadly piranhaconda as well as stop the mad scientist who stole the egg – before they all become dinner. Stars Michael Madsen, Rachel Hunter and AWESOMENESS!
#4 – Sunday at 8PM ET on THRMAX – The Saint: The Saint is a 1997 film staring Val Kilmer as an international criminal who is a master of disguise, but is looking to get out of the game. In the film, Ivan Tretiak is a Russian Mafia boss who wants to create an oil crisis in Moscow and seize power as a result sends Simon Templar (Kilmer), great international criminal, to England to get a secret formula for cold fusion from U.S. scientist Emma Russell (Elisabeth Shue). That formula will give Tretiak a source of cheap energy and a lot of money as result. Templar falls in love with Emma and they try to outwit Tretiak. A very fun popcorn flick to kill some time with, and Shue is gorgeous.
