From Batman & Wonder Woman and Wolverine & Jean Grey to Rick and Michonne from The Walking Dead and more, 411's Anthony Kennedy counts down the Top 8 comic book hook-ups that should have happened!
Welcome, one and all, to the inaugural Comic 8 Ball in the Movie Zone! I am your dedicated columnist Anthony Kennedy and today we'll be delving into the hypothetical romantic lives of some of our fave comic characters.
Top 8 Hook-Ups That Should Have Happened
When it comes to the long history of comic books, by now most of you are used to the iconic comic book couples: Peter and Mary Jane, Ollie and Dinah, Reed and Sue, and, of course, Lois and Clark. What about the relationships that almost happened, that should have happened, that, damnit, why didn't it happen? We will be taking a look at some of those ‘What Ifs', if you will, hook-ups that could have made for interesting comic book fodder and serious debate at the Con. With that out of the way let's get right in to it!
Caveat: This is strictly canon timeline. No alternate timelines or (in Marvel's case) the Ultimate universe or What Ifs, cartoon, film and television adaptations are counted. Full relationships not one night stands either.
#8: Wolverine-Kitty Pryde/Jubilee
In the long history of old man Logan, he's been shown to have a thing for two types of women: red heads and young spunky teens. I think it's about time Wolverine hooked up with one of these youngins. Hopefully, it would have went similar to his portrayal in the Ultimate universe where he was tapping a young, rebellious Jean Grey. Personally would have enjoyed a Jubilee pairing as the runaway mutie teen was very impressionable and always seemed to be some underlying school girl crush for Wolverine.
There was a point in the early ‘90s when a just gotten comfortable in her new skin Betsy Braddock was moving in on Jean Grey's territory, vying for the affections of Scott Summers. Scott was just as receptive to this super-hot Asian looking femme fatale, as he was shown a number of times checking her out and daydreaming about a hook-up. We could have gotten some great astral plane cat fights between Psylocke and Phoenix (which I'm sure Jean would have won) or better yet, Betsy putting some serious ninjitsu hands on Jean in the physical world. Seeing how Jean would have handled being a runner-up in Scott's life would have made for interesting team dynamic on the Gold and Blue teams with Storm and Beast showing their indignation and, of course, Wolverine right there to pick up the pieces of Jean's broken heart. Thankfully we eventually got to see something like this play out when Emma Frost put her moves on Cyclops.
#6: Rick Grimes-Michonne
The Walking Dead
The zombie apocalypse makes for strange bed fellows, and Rick and Michonne turning to each other seems like a natural progression for these two strong-willed characters. There's no denying that the two most resilient survivors would make for a great couple as both have suffered greatly: Michonne losing her boyfriends —Mike, Tyrese and Morgan—and being raped by the Governor (I don't want to hear any complaints about spoilers damnit, you should have read the books already.) While Rick lost Lori, Judith, and… his hand. The underlying love for one another is clearly there as well as their mutual caring for Carl. These two on the same page tactically and romantically would have led to some really good debate with the remaining survivors on how best to navigate this new world.
#5: Sue Richards-Namor
Aw, Sue you little minx. Arguably, the hottest and most powerful wife in the Marvel Universe is way too fine for an uber geek like Reed Richards, who clearly doesn't appreciate that he hit the MILF lotto. Namor on the other hand has been trying to tap that invisible poon tang for 50 years and their relationship would make for a nice mini-series and welcome departure from, let's face it, a stale FF series. Maybe she finally gets fed up and decides to be his underwater Queen. Or Namor uses some mind control to make her his bride. Either way, this pairing would shake up the status quo in the FF and allow for some new stories to develop.
#4: Yorrick-Agent 355
Y: The Last Man
This was kind of an easy one but something fans of Y never got to see as (***SPOILER***) that hot Agent 355 took a bullet to the dome just after they confessed their love for one another. Brian K. Vaughn wrote a great sci-fi series that I can only offer one complaint: it would have been great to see these to finally hook up and live happily ever after.
#3 Lois Lane-Lex Luthor
Lois Lane with Lex Luther is ripe with delicious storylines of betrayal. To see her, after nearly 75 years of being ‘Superman's Girlfriend', turn to the dark side to Lex of all people and taunt her (sometimes) unrequited love of Kal-El. Imagine the two flaunt their status as Metropolis' new power couple in Supes' face would turn the Lex-Superman dynamic on it's ear. Call them LeLo or LoiX or, my personal fave, the Lox. (Two points to the first person who gets that hip-hop reference.) Or maybe Lois has a positive influence on Lex and has him change his ways, doing more positive things for the world with his vast fortune and genius level intellect. Naaaaaaaaaw, too boring! Seeing the goodie two shoes go all Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley in the pages of Superman books would be awesome.
#2: Batman-Wonder Woman
Batman, Wonder Woman, Justice League Books
Some of my favorite parts of the Justice League were the underlying sexual tension between Bats and Diana. It would be great to see that duplicated in the comic pages as, for a change, Batman is with a woman that's more powerful than him and readily takes lead. Their power struggle easily writes itself and seeing Bats going into battle with a woman he loves but who can easily handle most dangerous situations would create a dynamic unseen with the Batman character. Is his ego bruised by dating an alpha female? Does Diana take kindly to everything that comes along with being Bruce Wayne's concubine? How would the rest of the Bat-family react, for that matter, the Justice League? Would Supes get jealous? I must know how this would play out.
#1: Wolverine-Jean Grey
Jean Grey has been the ultimate cock tease in the Marvel universe to the ol' canucklehead. My beef is, as much of a badass as Logan is why does he continue to be a simp for this heffer? Well, enough is enough and some X-Book writer should have given us a Wolverine-Marvel Girl/Phoenix/Jean Grey relationship in the 616. You just know Logan would have taunted Cyke for years now that he smashed Jean. And there's no doubt Jean would have gotten an edge from the adamantium coitus she was getting. It quite possibly would have changed X-Men history as Wolvie would have stepped up to pilot that ship that led to the whole Phoenix force saga. If we could see Slim happy in a relationship with Emma frost, then it's about time Jean and Wolverine hooked up.
