The Hollywood 5 & 1 1.18.14: Sarah Shahi Vs Bar Paly Edition
Posted by Steve Gustafson on 01.18.2014

Welcome back! How was your week? We're back for another week of hot women, the biggest Hollywood news, and some celebrity gossip! For some additional reading you can check out my Comics 411. Or you can check out my Big Screen Bulletin for more movie related news and thoughts! Last week I interviewed Playboy's Miss November, Gemma Lee Farrell!

Before we jump into things, I wanted to touch on one of this year's most surprising Oscar nomination snubs, courtesy of Robert Redford being overlooked for his incredible performance in All is Lost. I loved his portrayal and thought he was a shoo in to be nominated. He did an interview and talked about it at this year's Sundance Film Festival. "I was so happy to be able to do this film because it was independent," said Redford when asked how he felt about being overlooked for the Best Actor Oscar.

"Would it have been wonderful to be nominated – of course. But I'm not disturbed by it or upset by it. I'm happy about the film. The rest is not my business. I'm fine." He went on to talk about how the drama "Gave me the chance as an actor to go back to my roots" because of its pared down nature with minimal dialogue or effects." But he was quick to reiterate that he didn't want the snub to get in the way of the festival's message, Talking about Sundance, now in is 30th year, Redford emphasized the festival's importance as a platform for showcasing independent cinema, reiterating that the festival's not for profit status and ethos means they're not in the business of business. "We're not interested in the money. It's about creating new voices in independent film," he said. "The history and the product speak for itself in terms of independent film and the opportunities we've given people. [Oscar nominees] David O Russell, Alfonso Cuaron, they've all been through our festival."

OK, who's greeting us this week? None other than Francesca Aiello! Here's bikini model Aiello posting a new pic to her Instagram account. Yes, Instagram has become the new "go to" for the 5 & 1. Go figure.

Last week Maxim's Women of the Year, Eva Longoria and Ashton Kutcher's girl, Mila Kunis went at it. The results:

Mila Kunis 68.06%
Eva Longoria 31.94%

Looks like Maxim has swung and missed again. Mila easily takes down Eva. This week we put Sarah Shahi against Bar Paly. Another random pairing with no rhyme or reason. Go!

You've probably seen this video make the rounds on Facebook this past week. Turns out "Devil Baby Attack" is also part of a promotion, this time for found-footage horror film, Devil's Due, which opens this weekend. Thinkmodo founder, Michael Krivicka, told Yahoo News that he thought the project "was an interesting social experiment to see how many people would bother to check on an abandoned stroller.

Or a way to drum up interest in a horror film.

Marvel Roundup!
Zoe Saldana might have just dropped a huge spoiler in regards to the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers franchises. There has been much speculation that Marvel Studios might be planning for the Guardians of the Galaxy to crossover with The Avengers in Avengers 3, but it's all been just speculation to date.

In a new interview with Total Film magazine, Saldana dropped this little nugget of information. When talking about her reaction when Marvel Studios first approached her about playing Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, Saldana said, "I was like, Guardians? There's a person that's a tree and there's a racoon? Apparently they fight with The Avengers. I didn't even know who The Avengers were!"

Several people have pointed out that Saldana confesses that she didn't know who The Avengers were, so the part about the Guardians of the Galaxy fighting the Avengers isn't something that she just picked up from a comic book storyline. It certainly sounds like the Guardians of the Galaxy fighting the Avengers was part of the pitch that Marvel Studios made to get her to sign onto the film.

Saldana isn't the first Guardians of the Galaxy cast member to suggest a possible crossover with The Avengers.Back in August, Chris Pratt hinted that because the two teams exist in the same universe that their stories could intersect.

Guardians of the Galaxy is set to be released in movie theaters on August 1, 2014.

Moving right along, April sees the arrival of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the continuation of Steve Rogers' exploration of the modern world. The sequel takes its title and several story cues from writer Ed Brubaker's run on Marvel's Captain America comic, which reintroduced the long-deceased Bucky Barnes as a brainwashed Soviet spy known as the Winter Soldier.

Given his connection with the source material, Brubaker enjoyed some hands-on experience with the film, hanging out on set and witnessing production firsthand. Based on what he saw, the writer is happy to make a bold claim. "It's the best movie that Marvel has ever made," he told IGN. "The stuff I've seen from it, it also has two of the best fight scenes that I've ever seen on film." "It's going to be amazing," he continued. "It's gonna make a billion dollars. I got to go and be on set for a while and watch them film and stuff. It was just amazing. I couldn't be happier with how it came out."

He sounds enthusiastic.

Directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Haley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Max Hernandez, Georges St-Pierre and Robert Redford. It opens April 4

It's a Marvel world.

Star Wars!
As part of a bundle of new Star Wars rumors, Latino Review claims they've got some of the first story details on the new films...but not about Star Wars Episode VII. Instead, it's the Boba Fett spinoff. If they're right, it's a pretty radical departure from the character we saw depicted in the prequels. In addition to the idea that Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston is at the top of Disney's list of potential collaborators on the project, the site says that Boba Fett may in fact revolve around an entirely different character than we've previously assumed.

To counter-act the prequels, the Boba Fett spin-off movie planned for 2018 has an interesting twist pitched by Episode VII writer Lawrence Kasdan: the spin-off will start with a complete stranger killing Boba Fett and taking his armor, starting a Man-With-No-Name bounty hunter tale. Word is Kasdan didn't like the prequel and wants no Bobba Fett Clone in the spin-off film.

The film isn't officially announced yet, but if Disney's comments about doing a spinoff on alternating years following the latest Star Wars sequel hold true, expect something official soon, as the movie might go into production as soon as a year from now.

Making Sense!
Games of Thrones star Jack Gleeson never expected the fame that would come once he landed the role on the hit HBO series. In actuality, he considers celebrity culture to be a "cannibalistic" and dehumanizing industry.

It's shocking when someone makes sense about about the Hollywood image.

Gleeson, otherwise known as the King Joffrey, appeared before the Oxford Union back in November for a discussion on this very issue. A 30-minute YouTube video of his speech was uploaded Wednesday by Oxford Union and quickly went viral after being shared on Reddit, where Redditors lauded Gleeson for examining his own celebrity in both a self-deprecating and thoroughly analytical way. The actor said it was naive of him to not realize what the future held once he signed onto the award-winning HBO project, which premiered in 2011. Suddenly, people were taking his photo and asking about his sock brand.

"It was an environment from which I instantly wanted to retreat," he admitted. "I detested the superficial elevation and commodification of it all, juxtaposed with the grotesque self-involvement it would sometimes draw out in me." He said he actually found it odd that he himself found fame odd, because society reveres celebrity "almost religiously," with idols running the gamut from actors and pop singers to reality stars and "cheesemongers or something." The reverence has been welcomed and fostered by the public, even though "they're just people after all." With the rise of mass media, he added, celebrity became consumable and disposable for the masses. "What's ironic is that you see celebrity endorsing things like, you know, musical tampons and appearing in advertisements for lavender scented teeth whitener or something. Wielding goods whose sell-by dates [will] ironically, probably, outlast theirs," Gleeson said. "Having one's image, and effectively life, democratized, dehumanizes and sometimes objectifies it into an entertainment product. What sort of valuation of the ego would one have once you've let it been preyed upon by the public for years and years? Perhaps, it becomes truly just skin and bones."

Worth a watch.

Oh, Shia!
TMZ has an apparent video of actor Shia LaBeouf allegedly headbutting a man at a bar after a heated argument. In the video, LaBeouf is said to be wearing a white cap and headbutts a bald man about six seconds into the clip. Shia can reportedly be heard screaming at the man, "What are you saying about my girl's mom? Are you f**king kidding me bro?" A girl, the girl LaBeouf is apparently there with, is said to be screaming his name in a plea for him to stop. The incident took place at a bar called the Hobgoblin in South London on Thursday night.

Part of me thinks this was staged. Can you blame me?

What's next for Shia?

What's the VIDEO BUZZ?
Here is the trailer for Walk of Shame. The film opens on April 25th and stars Elizabeth Banks, James Marsden and Gillian Jacobs.

Banks stars as an aspiring reporter whose dreams of becoming a network news anchor are compromised after a one-night stand with a handsome stranger (Marsden) leaves her stranded in downtown Los Angeles without a phone, car, ID or money – and only 8 hours to make it to the most important job interview of her life.
