Howdy folks. Its time once again for the only 411 column solely dedicated to what I feel is the best show on TV today, LOST! As always, I am your humble diamond depositing gravedigger, Ben Piper. Wound up being a bit cranky with myself over the weekend. I started on the column early, knowing that Sunday was Easter. (which I hope all of whom celebrate the holiday enjoyed, by the way) I got a huge chunk of work done, and satisfied with my effort for the night I decided to pack it in and head to bed. The only problem is that I hit the wrong button when saving the document apparently, so I basically lost all three thousand words I had accumulated. Yeah, I was steamed. But not to worry, having to re-write the first half of the column actually was easier, due to the fact that I remembered certain stuff and lines so I didn't have to nitpick so much with regards to watching and marking all the details. But since I'm sure that most of you don't care and just want me to get on with it, let's dive right in to Lost, Season 3, episode 15; Left Behind.
What We Knew: Kate, Sayid and Locke were all captured by the Others when they attempted to rescue Jack, which he didn't ask for in the first place. The ramifications of this were great seeing as Locke blew up the submarine that was to transport Jack back home. Juliet had fallen out of favor with the Others due to her killing Pickett and had been branded as a result. And Sawyer had lost to Hurley in ping pong, meaning he couldn't give anyone nicknames for a week.
What We Learned: Kate hunches with her back to the rec room's pool table, her hands still cuffed together. She looks extremely bored. As she watches one of the windows she spots movement as someone walks past. Seeing this as her chance to escape, Kate grabs a pool cue and lies in wait next to the door. It opens, and Kate swings for the fences, but misses her intended target Juliet, who ducks just in the nick of time. Juliet grabs the cue and using some nifty kung fu flips Kate roughly to the ground. Kate gasps for air as Juliet looks down upon her as if to say "why did you make me do that?". She tells Kate all she was doing was bringing her something to eat before coldly saying to enjoy the sandwich that had been dumped on the floor.
Flashback: Kate leans against her beat up old car as it's being loaded upon a tow truck. Seems that the fan belt is shot and it'll be at least a couple of days before it can be fixed. Bummer. The driver holds the passenger side door to her as he introduces himself. Kate says her name is Lucy.
They pull into the garage and Kate takes notice of a man and woman arguing over something, with the guy telling anyone who will listen to call the police because someone's trying to pull a scam. Of course when Kate hears the word cops she momentarily panics. Although Kate doesn't know this woman, we the viewers do. She's Cassidy, Sawyer's onetime love/con partner/con mark/baby's mommy. She's trying to pull the old necklace con that Sawyer had taught her. Only problem is that she's missing a partner to help sell the con. Kate sees this and knows this instinctually, just like she sees and knows the girl is in trouble and it's getting worse by the moment.. Just as it looks like Cassidy is about to be busted Kate comes to her rescue, playing the second man of the con by "buying" an "expensive" necklace for $60. This makes the guy who's been clamoring for the police to get involved to throw up his hands and walk away angry. As Cassidy follows suit Kate stops her and asks for her money back. When questioned why she helped in the manner she did Kate replies she was only trying to watch another girls back. Cassidy calls her for not wanting the cops to show up as the real motivation. Cassidy offers a ride in exchange for a drink.
Back in the rec room, Kate absentmindedly fiddles with the game pieces from a backgammon board. The door opens behind her and Kate rolls her eyes in regards to what might be coming next. To her surprise, it's John Locke. His right hand is heavily bandaged which is interesting seeing as he had no such injury the last time we saw him.
Kate: John, what are you doing? Did they capture you?
Locke: Yes. But only temporarily. I came to say goodbye.
Kate: Goodbye?
Locke: I'm leaving with them.
Kate is shocked and can't believe her ears.
Kate: The hell is going on? What are they doing to you? Are you brainwashed? Where did Jack go?
Locke: Jack didn't go anywhere, Kate. He's gonna have to stay behind just like you.
Kate: You can't trust them. If they told you that they're going to take you home, they're lying.
Locke: I don't want to go home, Kate. I want you to know, I made a strong case for you. I told them that you were a good person. Reliable. Smart. Honest. Then they told be who you were and what you had done. Let's just say forgiveness isn't one of their strong suits. Good luck.
Kate: John, where are you going?
Locke: Coming out.
Kate: Hey just… Where's Jack? Where is Sayid? Have you seen Rousseau?
Locke has no answers for her as he opens the door to leave.
Kate: John, please. What's happened to you?
Locke: I'm sorry, Kate.
On the beach, Sawyer is engaging in one of his favorite pastimes that don't involve cons or making up nicknames, reading. Hurley strolls up and as he passes he intentionally kicks Sawyer's foot.
Sawyer: The hell's wrong with you?
Hurley: Don't look at me and pretend we're not talking. I'm not supposed to be here.
Sawyer: Good, then scram.
Hurley: Dude, You need to know that there's been some chatter. After Paulo and Nikki and everything? Well, tomorrow's gonna be a vote.
Sawyer: Vote for what?
Hurley: To decide whether or not to banish you.
Sawyer: (amused) Banish me? Where?
Hurley: Well, there was a debate about that but the consensus is half a mile down the beach. I'm only saying this because there may be a way to fix it. Make amends.
Sawyer: I don't do amends.
Hurley: Might want to ask yourself, about all the good stuff that comes with being a part of this… society. I mean, you can't even feed yourself. You use our latrine. You drink the water that Steve brings every morning to the trough.
Sawyer. Ahh.
Hurley: What?
Sawyer: You know how for three days, ten hours and fifteen minutes I'm not allowed to use nicknames?
Hurley: Yeah?
Sawyer: Well. You, sir… Hugo. Are rotund. Annoying. And you're ruining my damn view! How's that for amends?
Hurley: You're making a big mistake, Dude.
Sawyer: Banish Me? Heh.
The disheveled sandwich that Juliet brought to Kate still lies on the ground. Kate lays a few feet away, hunger getting the better of her as she takes the slice of bread least touching the floor and takes a bite. She hears a noise from outside, which brings her to her feet and the window to check out what is going on. She sees an assembled group of others all putting on backpacks and readying duffel bags. Even more troubling is the fact that they are also putting on gasmasks as well. The door opens and a canister is tossed inside emitting a gas. Kate kicks it away form her and uses the napkin that was brought with her sandwich to cover her nose and mouth. She tries both the door and the window to no avail before she passes out cold.
Flashback: Another pool table, this time inside a bar where Kate and Cassidy sit across a table from one another. When asked her name, Kate lies. Cassidy wants to know what her real name is, busting her on lying about it before telling her not to think when she is going to lie like that. When asked Kate tells the truth in terms of why she's so squeamish with regards to cops. Stepdad went boom. He was a bad gay says Kate. She's back in Iowa because she wants to talk to her mom. Cassidy advises her that's a bad idea because if the feds are after her they're going to be camped out on mom's doorstep twenty four seven. Cass offers to help. She then goes on to share her own sob story about how she had fallen in love with the wrong guy, only to be conned out of her life savings by him and embarrassed. She tells Kate that she'll help her get the meeting with her mom because one of them deserves something good.
Kate awakens on the floor of the jungle, leaves brushing against her face. Her eyes flutter open to take in the canopy of trees far above. As her vision gets less blurry, she begins to wonder just where in the hell she is. She sits up with a startle, confused and scared. She looks around, but sees no one. She looks down to notice that he left wrist still has a cuff attached to it. We follow her eyes down the chain to another wrist, also cuffed. It's an unconscious Juliet.
On the beach Sawyer decides to contribute by doing a little fishing with a pole. He turns his head and spots Jin and Sun, also fishing but with a net. He smiles in their direction but Sun gives him a go to hell look. He laments that he isn't going to get the Korean vote. Suddenly, he hooks a big one by the looks of it. H struggles to keep from being dragged into the surf itself as he tries to reel his catch in.
He plops the fish down on the sand, takes a knife and slits the belly and instantly recoils from the bad smell. He sticks his fingers inside in a lame attempt to gut it and winds up with fish guts all over his hand. Fed up he makes his way over to Hurley, who is draping some wet T-shirts across the branches of a tree for them to dry.
Sawyer: Alright. Let's do it.
Hurley: Do what?
Sawyer: I'm ready to do it. Make amends. Change the boat. I don't want to be banished, okay? You happy?
Hurley: Dude, you stink. What is that, fish?
Sawyer: (embarrassed) No.
Hurley: Did you try to gut one yourself? How have you not learned that by now? I mean we've been here like, three months?
Sawyer: Can we just do this?
Hurley: Do what?
Sawyer: Make nice?
Hurley: Apologize for calling me all those names.
Sawyer: (sighing) I'm really sorry I called you rotund.
Hurley: Really?
Sawyer: Ah, God. You're worse than a girl! C'mon, lets…
Sawyer good-naturedly slaps the back of Hurley's arm, which Hugo takes precise notice of.
Sawyer: …Spread the love.
Kate hovers over a still out Juliet. She notices something shiny clipped to her counterparts front jeans pocket closest to her. Kate carefully removes it. She flicks it open with her thumb to reveal a blade just as Juliet reaches up with he free hand and grabs Kate's wrist. They play the mutually confused game for a second before Kate demands that she let go of her. She does, which surprises Kate a little. It causes Kate to relax a little, and to use the knife on her cuff as they bring one another up to speed. Juliet tells her not to waste her time seeing as the knife is too big for the job she's trying to accomplish. Kate says they're going back, but Juliet argues, saying why should they considering what was done to them. Kate throws this back in Juliet's face by stating that she's one of them, so she shouldn't be so quick to play the victim card. Kate informs her that they're going back because her friends were probably gassed to and because all the Others had left. This appears to news to Juliet, which catches them both off guard.
Flashback: A woman wearing a baseball cap with long brown curly hair walks through a trailer park toting a small rolling luggage rack behind her. She walks up to one door specifically and knocks. Kate's mom emerges, as does a handgun wielded by a federal Marshall. Kate's federal Marshall. The woman is ordered to get down on the ground as cars screech into view to block her escape. He turns her over and takes off the sunglasses to reveal… Cassidy in a wig. She professes that she's only selling bibles, and the Marshall checks out her rolling tote bag and finds stuff to confirm her story. As this transpires Kate watches though binoculars from a safe distance.
A knock on a motel room door reunites the two temporary partners in crime. Cassidy details what went down while she was in custody and notes that it's a good thing that she knows how to lie convincingly. Bottom line is that things don't look good for Kate getting to talk with her mom since there's so much heat present. Kate offers Cassidy the chance to back out from helping her. She refuses, but says she needs to know why it's so important for Kate to do so. Kate informs her not only the whys of what she did what she did, but further explains that she took out insurance and set her mom up for life as a result. But then she turned around and narced her off instead, effectively choosing the POS that got drunk and beat her regularly over her own daughter. She says that she needs to see her mom because she wants to know why someone who is supposed to love and care about her would betray her in such a way. Once it's explained, Cassidy is all in.
Nighttime in the jungle. Kate does her best to track those who dragged both her and Juliet into the wilderness, explaining that it will lead them back to the village. Juliet stops her, saying it's going to rain, and that they should wait until morning. Not gonna fly, apparently, so she follows Kate along. As they walk Kate asks why they would handcuff the two of them and leave them in the middle of nowhere. Juliet counters with the fact that Ben likes to play mind games. Kate asks if that's why Juliet was left behind, which pretty much ends the conversation right there. At this point, thunder crashes suddenly and it begins to drop buckets, right on cue.
Kate: C'mon. If the trail gets wet, I'll lose it.
Juliet: I hope you're not dragging me all the way back there with you for him.
Kate: Excuse me?!
Juliet: I hope you're not going back for Jack. Because I was standing right there when he told you not to come back. And now that you've ruined his chance to get off the island…
Kate doesn‘t wait for the next word to escape Juliet's mouth, because she shuts it with an abrupt jab to her face. They both go down with Kate on top. They struggle for a moment and Juliet manages to monkey flip Kate over onto her back once again. This however leaves her open as Kate quickly punches her again, leaving her prone on her stomach. . Kate straddles her back and uses the cuffs that connect them together to not only hold her down but yank back on her arm. Kate asks if Juliet's hand enough, and when she doesn't respond quickly enough she asks again, yanking back hard on the chain. Juliet screams out in agony as there's an audible crunching kind of sound. Kate rolls off of her, surprised. She begins to apologize but is cut off by a loud noise in the distance. A distinctive thump, followed by a primordial roar. Juliet asks frantically what the hell was that as another howl rings out in the distance. Kate's head pivots back and forth in fright as if her head was mounted upon a swivel.
Kate urges Juliet to get up, and she protests in turn due to the fact that she now has a dislocated shoulder. Kate pulls her to her feet as further ominous rumblings and clicking noises flow from the darkness that surrounds them. They run. Luckily enough, they find a circular enclosure of trees and crouch down within. Juliet begins to ask what that thing is, but Kate clamps her hand over her mouth to silence her. More noises, which causes Juliet to cover Kate's hand with her own. There's a loud angry roar from somewhere close. A crunching sound, followed by further indescribable cacophony. It draws closer and closer to them, when out of nowhere the jungle is lit up with bright light, accompanied by a synchronicitous machine gun like sound. This stuns Juliet, who shades her eyes from the brightness intermittently. And just that quickly, it withdraws and is gone, leaving the two usually resolute and strong women rattled breathless.
Juliet: Are we safe?
Kate: You tell me.
Back at the beach it is also nighttime as step one of Hurley's plans to help Sawyer make amends to everyone begins to take shape. It's interesting to point out that it's not raining here.
Sawyer: I ain't kissing no damn baby!
Hurley: Claire is like, really influential. If she votes for you to stay you're home free, dude.
Sawyer: Well, why wouldn't she vote for me? It's not like I ever done anything bad to her.
Hurley: Nah, but it's not like you've ever done anything good for her, either. And have you ever even asked how Aaron is?
Sawyer: Well I know how he is. He cries loud and he smells.
Hurley: You see, that's what I'm talking about. You're sarcastic. People don't like that.
Sawyer: Alright. So I go over and do what?
Hurley: Moms love it when you show an interest in their babies. You should go over there, say something nice, call her Claire, and give her this.
Hurley produces a blanket, which he hands to Sawyer as he pats him on the shoulder.
Hurley: I know you can do it, dude.
And so the con man with a heart of gold that won't even admit to owning a heart awkwardly walks over to the young mother.
Sawyer: Hey, Claire.
She is so not expecting this, judging by her reaction.
Claire: Hey.
Sawyer: Hey there, little baby.
Aaron begins to cry when he's addressed. Claire smiles at the fact that the young one already seems to be a good judge of character.
Claire: Is ah… Is there anything that I can do for you?
Sawyer: I just came by to say you're baby is… He's not as wrinkly as he was a couple of weeks ago.
Claire laughs, knowing that what was just said was meant as a compliment. And considering the source, she seems to take it as such.
Claire: Yeah, I guess he's not. Thanks.
Sawyer: Oh and uh… This is for you…
He offers up the blanket to her.
Claire: Thank you.
The lilt in her voice tells us that not only that this is unexpected, but genuinely welcomed. He may not be such a dick after all…
Sawyer: I don't like…. Blankets…
Claire smiles and looks at him with curiosity, before he beats a hasty retreat.
Sawyer: Good night.
Claire: Good night.
As he walks away, Hurley gives him a thumb's up for his strained effort.
It's no longer raining in the jungle, but the two women still sit within the trees where they feel safe. Juliet is breathing hard, clearly still freaked out just a little bit.
Juliet: Do you think it's gone? Are we safe?
Kate: Are you serious? You've never seen that?
Juliet: If you don't believe me you can always pull my other shoulder out of its socket.
Kate expresses genuine remorse.
Kate: I was… I wasn't trying to…
Juliet: Don't flatter yourself. It's the fourth time it's been dislocated.
Juliet briefly stands, re-positioning herself directly in front of Kate. She grumbles loudly with pain as she does.
Juliet: Give me your hand.
Kate: Why?
Juliet: Cause I want you to pop it back in.
Kate: No, I'm not going to…
Juliet: You're gonna. Right now, it feels like there's broken glass under my skin and if it weren't for you, I would be on my way home, right now.
Kate: Jack told me not to come back to protect me, because he didn't want me to get hurt.
Juliet: Is that what you think?
Kate: Yes, that's what I think.
When Juliet responds, she does so deliberately, and with a kind of veiled malice. Almost as if she feels like Kate doesn't deserve the thought and consideration paid to her by the man in question.
Juliet: We have cameras on the cages, Kate. All of them. He saw you. You, and Sawyer. The reason Jack told you not to come back wasn't because he didn't want you to get hurt. It was because you broke his heart.
This hits Kate like a ton of bricks. Her eyes are welling up with tears….
Juliet: So, grab my wrist. Push up, and twist.
Kate takes a moment to weigh everything she has just heard. After she does, she grabs Juliet's wrist, pushes up, and twists, just as instructed. Juliet screams out in anguish.
Sawyer is hunched down in the underbrush of the jungle with a pistol in his hand, complaining about it being so damned early. Next to him is Desmond, armed with a rifle, who explains that this is the time of day that boar break cover to eat. And since Sawyer asked him to help on this little endeavor, he wants to know what his angle is. Des says that Sawyer hasn't spoken three words to him, but all of a sudden he wants to be hunting buddies? Sawyer admits that he has hearts and minds to change, so he won't be banished. Politics are all about bribes, and since money isn't a factor on the island, he has provide something to win the will of the common people his way. And people like to eat meat. Desmond draws a bead, seeing as he spots a boar nearby. He takes the shot, and scores.
Still within the enclave of trees as daylight shows it's magnificent colors, Kate awakens harshly, as if she experienced a bad dream in her sleep. Juliet is already awake, and Kate asks how her shoulder is holding up. "Awesome" is the response. This prompts Kate to propose that they get up and keep going.
Flashback: We're in a diner. We can tell this by the low clinking of plates and silverware as well as the visual documentation of someone wearing a white apron tucking a menu beneath her arm. This person serves a plate of soup to someone sitting at a table. The someone is Cassidy. The waitress is Kate's mother. As Kate's mom goes about her waitressing duties Cassidy strategically places the bowl of soup towards the edge of the table that she's sitting at. As Kate's mom walks past her again, Cassidy flings the soup towards her, "accidentally". She apologizes profusely, only to be assured that it happens all the time and it's not her fault.
Cut to the bathroom of the diner. Kate's mom does her best to clean herself up with the use of the sink, but it's just not happening. A stall door opens behind her as she looks up and sees Kate's reflection standing before her.
Kate: Hi, mom.
Mom: What are you doing here, Katherine?
Kate: You look good.
Mom: I asked you what you were doing here.
The coldness of the words spoken halts Kate in her tracks.
Kate: I want to know why you told them what I did to Wayne.
Mom: Maybe you came because you wanted to say you're sorry…
Kate: I'm not sorry. He hit you. He treated you like a dog, and…
Mom: You can't help who you love, Katherine. And for good or bad, I loved him. And you burned him alive. You turned on the gas, and you lit a match. You murdered him in cold blood…
Kate: I did it for you.
Mom: What you did…. You did for yourself.
Kate's mom lowers and shakes her head.
Mom: I have to go back to work. Because you are my daughter, I'm not going to tell the two men sitting at the table who have been following me for the past month that you are here. I swear to God, Kate. If I ever see you again… The first thing I will do is yell for help. Goodbye.
Momsy departs, which leaves Kate in a total state of emotional breakdown, which she must quickly recover from.
Kate and Juliet, still handcuffed to one another continue to walk towards their destination.
Kate: Did he say that to you?
Juliet: I'm sorry?
Kate: That I broke his heart.
Juliet: He didn't have to.
Kate: You don't know anything about him.
Juliet: I know where he was born. I know what his parent's did for a living. I know that he was married.
That last one turns Kate's head.
Juliet: And who he was married to. I know why he got a divorce. I know how his father died. I know his height, his weight, his birthday, and his blood type. What do you know about him, Kate?
Damn! Shut down! Of course Kate doesn't say anything other than let's go. But as soon as they start to move again a familiar rattling sound can be heard. And then a roar. Kate and Juliet start running like hell until Juliet trips and pulls Kate down with her, both of them face first in a mud patty. Then struggle to get up and continue. They run some more until the stumble upon a security pylon. Kate stops cold, knowing what that thing can do, so she won't go any further despite Juliet's pleas that she trust her. Juliet finally takes a key out of her pocket and uncuffs herself from Kate, much to the latter's surprise. Juliet runs over and begins pushing buttons on a control panel at the base of the pylon. Juliet tells Kate that she really wants to be on the other side of the pylon. Kate finally relents and crosses over to the other side, which allows Juliet to arm the perimeter. As they both step back Kate looks herself over as if to ensure she's alright and in one piece. A moment later smokey shows itself, seemingly emerging from the earth itself. It gets ever so closer to Juliet who's just standing there until it runs into the perimeter itself and is stopped dead in its tracks. (Why it didn't go over the top of the pylon like the Lostys did a few days ago is beyond me.) The thing screams in apparent anger before it disappears back into the jungle from whence it came. At first Kate looks relived, but then the next second, she pissed about the whole Juliet had the key to the handcuffs all along thing. She walks over and shoves her.
Juliet: Alright. We don't know what it is but we know it doesn't like our fences.
Kate: You had a key.
Juliet: They left me behind, too. They gassed me. I know that you don't care, But the people that I spent the last three years of my life with, they just left me. I thought that maybe, maybe if I could make you think that we were in it together, maybe I wouldn't get left behind again.
It doesn't look like Kate's buying what Juliet is selling as all she does is walk up, take the key from her and unlock the cuff around her wrist before tossing it to the ground in disgust.
Back at the beach, Sawyer appears to be actually enjoying his role as head boar BBQ-er as he bastes the huge hunk of meat with some oil. He then saunters over to Charlie who is digging in and loving it. Sawyer makes it a point to say that he hopes Charlie remembers this when it comes time for the big meeting later on. What meeting, Charlie asks, not even so much as taking his eyes off of the food in front of him. Sawyer replies that Hurley clued him in on the vote. Vote? What vote, Charlie asks. Sawyer at first smiles, thinking perhaps he's getting put on. But then it dawns on him…
Sawyer: You sonofabitch! There never was gonna be no vote.
Hurley: Right. But wasn't it nice being nice?
Sawyer: You tricked me into being decent? That's got to be the lamest con in the history of cons!
Hurley: It wasn't a con, dude. If you're going to be our temporary leader you need to do some damage control.
Sawyer: LEADER?! The hell are you smokin'?
Hurley: Jack's gone. Locke's gone. Kate and Sayid? You're all we got. When Paulo and Nikki died, we all looked to you. Then again you totally tried to steal the diamonds, but we wanted to look to you. Look around. You made everyone happy. Just for today, they can eat boar, laugh and forget that they're totally screwed. And you did that for them, dude. You.
Sawyer: What if I don't want to be the leader?
Hurley: You know, I don't think Jack wanted it either. Sucks for you, dude.
Hurley walks away. During the course of the big guy's little speech it seemed like it was settling into Sawyer's brain that what he was saying was the truth. As such, his reactions with priceless as he realizes that a great responsibility had been thrust upon him unexpectedly. Great scene.
Sawyer watches as everyone continues to enjoy themselves greatly. Hurley takes a plate of food over to Desmond, who looks to be okay with Sawyer getting all the credit in the endeavor. Sawyer himself fixes a plate and takes it over to Claire, who is busy holding Aaron. She takes the plate of food gratefully and hands the baby over to Sawyer to hold, which at first he doesn't know how to react. Sun takes notice of this from a distance, watching Sawyer smile as he holds little Aaron. She catches his eye, and he smiles at her, but again she gives him a go to hell look. His eyes drop with regret and guilt.
Kate and Juliet have finally made it back to the compound. Juliet tells Kate that Sayid is being kept in a backyard, and that Kate should go get Jack. Of course she does, entering into his bungalow to find it in disarray and Jack passed out in a hallway. He awakens with a start, which causes Kate to jump back against the nearby wall.
Jack: What happened?
Kate: They all left.
Jack: Left?
Jack slowly sits up opposite Kate.
Kate: …Because of me. I'm so sorry. I should have listened to you. I never…
She catches herself just as the tears begin to well up in her eyes.
Kate: I wanted to come back to help you. But you didn't need me to. And now because of me you can't go. I'm so sorry. I am so sorry.
Jack: They just…. Left.
Kate nods her head affirmatively.
Jack: even… Even Juliet?
Jack's concern for the blonde Other stings Kate a little.
Kate: No, they left her too.
Jack: Why?
Kate: You know her better than I do. Now what?
Jack: Now? Now we go back.
With assistance from Kate, Jack pulls himself to his feet. He puts his arm around her shoulders for support as they make their way outside.
Flashback: Cassidy pulls off the road next to the garage where Kate's car was being fixed.
Kate: Thanks for everything, Cassidy.
Cassidy: You got it.
Kate: So. This guy that ripped you off. You going to give me his name? Tell me where I can find him? You almost got arrested for me Cassidy. I want to help you.
Cassidy: I'm pregnant. It's his. The baby's his. And I still love him.
Kate: So call the cops. Have him locked up.
Cassidy: Will you ever forgive your mom for calling the cops?
Kate: No. No, I won't.
Cassidy: Thanks, Lucy.
Kate: My name's Kate.
Back in the present, Jack and Kate emerge from the bungalow. Jack spots Juliet and asks if she's okay. She asks in return. Kate steps forward, looking like she's feeling like a third wheel. Just then Sayid appears, and Jack greets him.
Sayid: I checked all the houses. Everyone's gone. No weapons. No trail. It's like fifty people disappeared into thin air.
Jack: Should take what we can find, and set out while it's still light.
Jack begins to walk away and Juliet follows him…
Sayid: She is not coming with us.
Jack: Yes, she is.
Sayid: Why?
Jack: Because they left her behind, too.
Easter Eggs: John Locke's favorite childhood board game, Mouse Trap, can be spotted in the Other's rec room under the window. The book that Sawyer was reading at the start of the episode was Watership Down, which you'll remember he already read way back during season one. In her flashbacks Kate was wearing a Renton "Cowboy Up" baseball cap. When activating the security pylon Juliet punched in "4", "16" and "23" on the number pad.
Analysis: A much better episode than the one previous. I liked that the flashbacks tied into the current day storyline, in that Kate was dealing with betrayal at the hands of those she trusted most in both instances. I also enjoyed that she wound up playing "Thelma and Louise" with Sawyer's flashback ex and they wound up being sort of friends, establishing yet another third person relationship between a couple of Island dwellers.
Hurley and Sawyer's subplot I thought was both funny and brilliant. The con man who doesn't give a shit about anyone other than himself gets conned into acting like he cares about other people! Fans on the net are crying foul, saying that Sawyer is too world weary to be naïve enough to fall for Hurley's plan. I think differently. The way I see it, Sawyer underestimates Hurley consistently. Let me put it this way… Did Sawyer think Hurley would bloody his nose and kick his ass last season when he goaded him at the wrong time? No, he didn't. Did Sawyer think that Hurley would spank him badly at ping pong, causing him to lose his nickname privileges for a week? No, he didn't. So I think this was another case of Sawyer not seeing Hurley as being smart enough to pull of this sort of thing, and as such, bought it hook, line and sinker. The last scene between the two of them was just great, as Hurley talks of the responsibilities that now may fall to the con artist as a result of all the other "leader" quality people being MIA. Seeing all that sink in on Sawyer was great, as he took that as sobering and serious news, indeed. Maybe we might be led into a genuine friendship between the two polar opposite characters as a result of this. They have been interacting more and more lately. That would be cool, I think
Also, I'd like to point out the episode's title, "Left Behind". On the surface, it would appear that this references to Juliet, as the Other's have done just that, left her behind. But it serves as a sort of double entandre, in my opinion. The subtext being, that it is Jack that is leaving Kate behind, after witnessing her and Sawyer in the cage together. He has decided to move on, and is focusing in on Juliet instead. And worse, Kate now knows it.
All in all, really good episode. I'm SO happy that Lost returned to fine form this past week.
Next week, I'll be back yet again to recap Lost, Season 3, Episode 16; One Of Us. Juliet gets a second helping of flashback filler.
Until the next time, I strongly urge all of you to…
