Two Tivos To Paradise 03.28.08: When It Comes to TV News, It Doesn't Get Any Better
Posted by Al Norton on 03.28.2008

Hello Friends. Welcome back to the only place you need to go to get your TV news! Mrs. Tivo finally got to enjoy one of her Christmas presents last week when we went to see Avenue Q, an incredibly funny musical that features some rather racy puppets. Everyone's A Little Bit Racist is a great song, and There's A Fine, Fine Line is a heartbreaker that would be at home in any Broadway show.

I promised you some big news last week – actually I teased "the biggest news in TTTP history" - so here goes: Mrs. Tivo is pregnant! And not only that, but we are expecting TWINS!!!!! I guess the powers-that-be thought the "Two" in the name of the column was a good number to work with. We are a few weeks away from knowing the gender of the kids but that hasn't stopped me from suggesting a boatload of names; Angel and Spike (or the more formal Angelus and William), Tim and Frank, Kara and Lee, Kate and Juliet, Leonard and Ashish, Buffy and Faith, Arnold and Dudley…needless to say, they all got shot down. I am thinking of running a contest for best name suggestions, although the prize would not be us actually using those submissions but perhaps an autographed photo of our new family.

In somewhat less exciting but still important news, I am moving closer to getting www.twotivostoparadise.com up and running. The weekly piece would always stay here at 411mania but it will be a way for people to find all the stuff I get to do for my Boston Now gig in one easy place. Some of my recent interviews include Tony Shalhoub, Alyssa Milano, Nikki Blonsky, Michael Emerson, Jamie Bamber, Vincent D'Onofrio, Alison Sweeney, and The Nature Boy Ric Flair. Stay tuned for more details!

Havin' my baby, what a lovely way of sayin' how much you love news.

It's Unnatural, You Belong To Me, I Belong To You
Tuesday's season finale of Jericho also became it's series finale when CBS announced last week that it was canceling the series, the second time in as many springs it had done so. Despite a massive fan outcry that caused the network to rethink its decision last year and bring the show back for a sophomore season, the Nielsen ratings were not good and CBS executives seemed less inclined to take Tivo and DVR viewings into account this time around. The producers had known this possibility existed and had filmed two versions of the episode, one that was more open ended and the other designed to wrap up as many storylines as possible.

While some may take this as sad news, and it is, I think the focus should be on what fans of the show accomplished in the first place, which was making TV history by getting CBS to change their minds. The truth is that while this season had some strong episodes and included some excellent performances (in particular Esai Morales), it felt like a show trying to squeeze a season's worth of action into 8 episodes, which is exactly what it was. Where we had some nice character development last season we got lots and lots of expository dialogue. An example I used earlier was the reporter who Jake convinced to investigate the conspiracy; last year we would have gotten to know him and seen him at work so that when he was killed for knowing too much it would have meant something, and this season he was done by the end of the episode. Please don't take this as me knocking Jericho as I very much enjoyed the series as a whole but there was no question this season was simply not as strong; how could it be when CBS cut the budget as much as they did?!? Some have suggested the show's tipping point came when it was revealed that the bomb attacks were orchestrated from inside the US instead of by some evil foreign power, but I still contend the stumbling block came when CBS pulled it from the schedule for 2+ months last winter instead of showing reruns as a way to keep momentum and even add to what was then a solid base. There appears to be a very slight chance the show could continue on a new network, with Sci Fi being the obvious choice since they are showing reruns of the series first season currently, but the odds of a second resurrection seem pretty slim.

I don't want to give too much away since there are some who may not have watched Tuesday's finale yet but the scenes on the hill at Stanley's farm brought tears to my eyes and more than made the show's return worthwhile.

The Reasons I Can't Stay Don't Have A Thing To Do With Being In Love
A column on MSNBC.com reporting on a story from the issue of OK! Magazine on the stands today set off a ton of chatter this week, with rumors running rampant that Tyra Banks would leave America's Next Top Model at the end of this cycle. According to the story, the feud between Banks and host/judge Jay Manuel is past the point of no return, with Banks cutting back her involvement in the show. Speculation that Banks' recent "gets" on her daytime talk show, including Senators and Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, have her focusing her energy there, to the point of investigating the possibility of finding a new host for the highly successful reality series. No one is confirming anything at this point so this is the definition of speculation.

Tyra is just self obsessed to want to leave The CW to focus on her "serious" stuff. Between her talk show and her fledgling career as a producer, she probably wants to put the modeling show behind her, and this season's falling ratings may or may not be playing a role as well. A real question would be if The CW would change the focus of the show if Tyra left, making it more about the actual contestants (like Make Me A Supermodel) and less about the ego of the host. I have never actually watched a full run of ANTM but Mrs. Tivo puts it on in the background on some weekends when she is working from home and MTV/VH-1 shows the marathons and found it to be painful, like the casting directors went for the people who would have the most issues with each other as opposed to the ones with the most actual potential.

Do You Like Good Music, That Sweet Soul Music
The Today Show announced the line up for their annual Friday summer concert series, featuring a wide array of styles and artists. Things kick off with Paul Abdul on April 25th, and May's performers are Neil Diamond, Mary J Blige, a mystery reunion event, Alanis Morisette, and the B-52's and Donna Summer (co-headlining the Memorial Day weekend event). June finds Chris Brown, Kenny Chesney, Rihanna, and Coldplay taking the stage, and July's slate includes Ashlee Simpson, Rascall Flatts, Natasha Bedingfield, and Miley Cyrus.

With the possible exceptions of an up-tempo pop group like Boys Like Girls or Panic At The Disco as well as anything resembling actual "rock", this is just about as wide ranging look at popular American music in the year 2008 as your could hope to see. From oldies to country to R & B to pop to dance, good or bad, this is what people are listing to right now, and I give NBC a lot of credit for being able to put this star studded a group together.

He's There Just To Take Good Care Of Me, Like He's One Of the Family
Continuing a trend from last year, many of the new pilots the networks are producing are being directed by some big name and highly successful talent. Davis Guggenheim, who won an Oscar for An Inconvenient Truth, will helm the pilot for CBS' The Tower, about a group of reporters in Chicago who not only investigate mysteries but they solve them as well. Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty, Men In Black, The Addams Family) is in charge of the debut of HBO's Suburban Shootout, an adaptation of a British series which follows a woman who moves out of the city only to get involved in a feud between gangs of housewives. Timothy Busfield may be best known for his Emmy award winning acting but he has been directing TV for years (Ed, Sports Night, Without A Trace, Studio 60) and is working on the CBS pilot Mythological X, an adaptation of an Israeli series about a woman who revisits all her past relationships after a psychic tells her she has already met her future husband. Others busy during pilot season include Bryan Gordon (Curb Your Enthusiasm) – Fox's Outnumbered, and Charles Stone (Drumline) – Fox's Spaced.

The standout example from last year's crop was Kevin Smith's pilot for Reaper, which had stood head and shoulders above the rest of the series until the high quality of the last two episodes, and therein lies one of the problems; you don't want a pilot directed so well that it makes the rest of the show look bad. Sonnenfeld was behind the camera for the premiere of Pushing Daisies and helped to set the tone for the rest of the series, which is clearly the ideal scenario. I am digging on Mythological X – kind of a mix of High Fidelity and How I Met Your Mother – and its being written by Veronica Mars producer Diane Ruggiero makes my hopes even higher.

Well The One On The Right Was On The Left And The One In The Middle Was On The Right
Bob Odenkirk and David Cross have signed to do David's Situation, a new comedy that returns the duo to HBO where they enjoyed major critical success with their sketch comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and Dave. The new pilot, written by both, finds Cross playing himself, leaving California and moving to a gated community in the suburbs where his roommates are an ultra conservative and a liberal hippie type. The show would make Cross first foray into series TV since Arrested Development was cancelled in 2005.

I would watch anything these two did and think the idea is full of possibilities, especially if Odenkirk can reign in some of Cross' darker ravings and let him play the straight man to the two extremes his roommates represent. I find Cross to be very funny but some of his stand up is SO bitter and angry that it borders on bile, which is a shame since it can cause people to tune out and miss his unique take on the world. There is no doubt that both sides of the aisle are ripe for lampooning and something that takes even shots at both sides could really go a long way in the polarized political times we live in. And I can't write about Cross without mentioning his brilliant turn as Donny on Just Shoot Me; chicken pot, chicken pot, chicken pot pie!

From The Redwood Forests To The Gulf Stream Waters, This Land Was Made For You And Me
TV Land unveiled a new batch of reality shows in production as well as giving airdates to show's it announced last fall. She's Got The Look (6/4) is hosted by Kim Alexis and is a search to find the best unsigned model age 35 and older, Family Foreman (7/16) gives viewers a peek at the everyday life of George Forman, and The Big 4-0 (4/16) helps viewers celebrate their 40th birthdays in a big way. The new shows include First Love, Second Chance, where long lost lovers are reunited, a hidden camera show called Make My Day, and What's in the Box?, a new game show from Jonathan Murray (Road Rules, The Real World).

TV Land is trying to brand themselves as the network for 40 somethings and is hoping to use reality programming to put them on the map. I am almost surprised Big George didn't have a reality show before this, considering the size of his family and his diverse business interests. I vaguely recall a sitcom featuring his family a few years back but why bother scripting something that is probably quite interesting on its own? A modeling show for older contestants sounds kind of interesting although they might as well call it America's Next Top MILF. Hidden camera shows can work if they are clever and especially if they don't over do the narration and let the viewer simply watch things unfold. What's in the Box? is a GREAT name for a series and also I believe the title of a Stephanie Swift film. TV Land has to do something to shake things up since February's prime time ratings were down 18% from last year.

And With Your Hair Combed Right And Your Pants Fit Tight, It's Gonna Be All Right
Season 7 of American Idol is actually season one when it comes to my watching. All season long I will be providing a weekly diary of the action as well as covering any AI related news items. Tuesday night's final 10 episode pulled in 24.4 million, down 9% from this week last year. 25.4 million watched the elimination episode on Wednesday, an audience of 150% more than the next closest show on that night.

TUESDAY
We're down to the final 10 contestants for the 2008 edition of American Idol. Tonight features the finalists doing songs from the year they were born. Let's get to it!

-Paula looks like she is going to the prom, in the 80's. Is there a remake of Some Kind Of Wonderful she is auditioning for?

-Ramiele (1987) has apparently being introduced to a curling iron. My issue with her is the same - strong voice but no connection to the song. You don't sing Alone with a big smile on your face.

-I would love for all of Paula's comments to be transcribed and put into a book; The Collected Wit and Wisdom of Paula Abdul; I really think people would buy it as one of those little point-of-purchase things for a laugh.

-Jason Castro (1987) is celebrating a birthday tonight. His Fragile is ok but everything we have seen from him before. Hey, he can be mediocre in two languages!

-If the audience gives standing ovations after EVERY song it really softens the impact. Hey look, Grey's Anatomy's Sara Ramirez!

-Is Jason high?!?!?

-Syesha (ANOTHER 1987) knows how to sell a lyric. Her If I Was Your Woman is her best performance to date and she ought to give lessons to Ramiele and The Archuletta Youth Movement.

-Cool outfit, Chikeze (1985). If Only For One Night is a decent choice and he never lets you forget how much he enjoys being on the stage, which ought to count for something. Sold.

-Brooke White (1983) gets a yellow flag for a false start but recovers well. I totally agree with Simon and Randy about the arrangement. She needs to stick with her inner Tori Amos.

-Is it bad that I don't know who some of these celebrity "cut to's" are?

-Micheal Johns (1978) has been surviving on his one performance of Bohemian Rhapsody from the audition round so he goes back to Queen to get some traction. He sang the hell out of that and the audience and judges love him, but the show isn't Rock Star: Queen, so I don't know about his long term future.

-Carly (1983)is trying to recover from her surprising trip to the bottom 3 last week with one of my favorite 80's songs - Total Eclipse of the Heart. Not sure she nailed it.

-The Archuletta Youth Movement is probably doing a song from the High School Musical soundtrack. Actually he is doing a song from 1990 I have never heard of and if you add in his cover of We Can Work It Out from the first Beatles week he's had two of his last three performances be pretty ehh. Is the Boy Wonder losing his touch?

-Simon's last comment ("I'd be surprised if you picked that song for yourself") is a reference to rumors that Young David has some serious stage parents who have reduced him to pre-show tears on more than one occasion.

-Kristy Lee Cook (1984) pays Lee Greenwood's mortgage this month with her cover of God Bless The USA. Simon's right about the song choice - how can you vote against America. I think she's safe because she did sing it well.

-David Cook (1982) goes last...WOW...WOW...Stunned by that cover of Billie Jean...Watched it twice. Best thing I have EVER seen on this show. Not sure if it's his arrangement or not but who cares. Seriously, it was that good.

My guess at the bottom three is Carly, Chikeze, and Jason. See you tomorrow night when they cut it down to 9.

WEDNESDAY
Apparently Fox calls these episodes "Results Specials" - good to know! Let's get right to the results as AI 08 sends one more finalist home.

-The medley/group sing is the single worst part of the show each week; it's Hooray For Everything come to life. I haven't seen choreography like this since the Silver Platters graced the stage of the Pete Sterne Amateur Hour.

-This entire segment is one big ITunes commercial, which reminds me to keep my eyes our for the segment that will be an entire Ford commercial.

-It took 12 minutes to get to a recap? That must be an Idol record.

-Ok, so it's Chikeze that goes home. Not the worst thing in the world since he was clearly not going to win but what the what was Syesha doing in the bottom 3 with Ramiele sitting on the couch? Take those earplugs out, America!

But You Were Up To Your Old Tricks In Chapters Four Five And Six
All you need to know about the Nielsen's for the last week…Lost won Thursday's 9:00 hour in total audience and demos…The penultimate episode of The Celebrity Apprentice was up a half million despite being up against Lost and The NCAA's…Reaper saw a slight increase but any uptick is good news for this criminally under watched show…Eli Stone was the most watched show at 10 pm, but the season (series?) finale of Lipstick Jungle was up 25% from the previous week…Interesting numbers for the opening round of the NCAA's on CBS; the TV ratings are down 9% from last year but the on-demand viewings on CBSSports.com set records all weekend, overall up 24% from last year, including Sunday's 129% jump….Extreme Home Makeover was Sunday's most watched show…Britney Spears led How I Met Your Mother to it's highest ratings ever, which combined with last week's strong numbers is leading industry insiders to call the show's renewal a sure thing…Interestingly enough the rest of CBS' comedy block did well but were down from last week's spike…CSI Miami returned from the strike with 15.8 million, up 7% from the season average…Dancing with the Stars was down from it's premiere but still averaged a shade over 20 million viewers over it's two hours and The Bachelor dropped 16%, with it's Monday totals representing a series low…Medium was NBC's most watched show on Monday night…The return of The Hills was big enough to hit a series high of 4.8 million. That's not just a high for the show, it's a high for any episode of any series that MTV has aired. It also set a network record for the 12-34 demos…Dancing with the Stars first results show drew 17.2 million, up over a half million from last season's first results episode…Till Death enjoyed it's AI lead-in to the tune of 10.2 million, and 80% increase from it's last new episode…The finale of Jericho picked up 210K from last week…The 10 million that tuned into Wednesday's Moment of Truth were a series low but more than enough to win the timeslot...

All The Young Dudes Carry The News
Industry News, Notes, and Hot Rumors…CBS has had such success with primetime episodes of The Price is Right that they ordered four more to air during May sweeps and there are even rumors that they are considering a regular spot in their nighttime schedule…Prison Break was picked up for a 22 episode 4th season, with Los Angeles being the show's new setting come the fall. Not only that but TV Guide is reporting that Sarah Wayne Callies will reprise her role as Dr. Sara Tancredi and is on board for the entire season. I guess that wasn't her head in the box after all…Fox cancelled The Return Of Jezebel James less than two weeks after it's premiere. I don't have a huge issue with the quick hook considering how bad the show was but I do think there should be some investigation into who the execs at Fox were who let a show this bad get on the air in the first place…Diane Farr is leaving Numb3rs this spring…Jerry O'Connell will be guesting on an episode of Samantha Who? in late April…HBO ordered a pilot for Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl, based on a memoir and is being produced by Darren Star. Hmmm, a series about New York City hookers, how topical…Sofia Vierga is doing a multi-episode stint on Men In Trees. Yummy…Fred Savage has been cast as the lead in the CBS comedy pilot Single White Millionaire…Speaking of leads in CBS pilots, Amy Smart is the front woman on Meant To Be's, about a woman who dies on the way to her honeymoon and is tasked with helping the living before she can go to heaven. Is the guy with the beard and the A's hat available as her sidekick?...Ok, last bit of CBS pilot news, I promise – Jennie Garth is one of the leads in the My Best Friend's Girl, a comedy about a friendship that is tested when one girl starts dating the other's ex…American Idol producer Simon Fuller is the force behind the CW pilot Austin Golden Hour, a medical drama that unfolds in real time…Bobby Flay decided that two shows wasn't enough so he is launching Grill It! With Bobby Flay on the Food Network in July…Jane Seymour is starring in the Hallmark TV movie/pilot Dear Prudence, about a TV talk show host who solves mysteries in her spare time. Actually, Hallmark has 30 TV movies in development, including projects with Bob Newhart, Stephen Collins, and Pam Grier (sadly not all in the same movie – how awesome would that be?!?!)…Kelly Preston is doing four episodes of Medium this spring…USA announced four new shows in development; White Collar (con man escapes from prison and ends up becoming a consultant to the FBI), The Nanny Files (a suburban nanny helps her police chief boss solve cases), Shirlyville (soldier comes back from Afghanistan and ends up the mayor of his small town), and Royal Pains (a doctor tries to recover from a ruined career by making house calls to the rich residents of the Hamptons)…Justin Timberlake is hosting this year's Espy Awards…Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica) has been cast in major role for Joss Whedon's new Fox series Dollhouse…Tito Ortiz is working on a new show for G4 called Anytown Beatdown, where average everyday folks settle their differences in the octagon. Best. Idea. Ever….Hamish Linkletter, who I love oh so much on The New Adventures of Old Christine, is the co-writer of the ABC pilot Prince of Motor City, a drama based on Hamlet and set in the world of the Detroit auto industry…NBC is fast-tracking a new primetime version of Family Feud that features teams of famous families as well as the cast of TV series. This comes hot on the heels of TBS announcing they were prepping a new edition of Match Game…Look for Project Runway winner Christian Siriano on a May sweeps episode of Ugly Betty...

Turns Out Not Where But Who You're With That Really Matters
The top thing I watched since the last column went to press AKA The Best Of What's Around…The last two weeks of Aliens In America have pushed it ahead of Everybody Hates Chris and into the spot of "Best Family Comedy" on TV. I know, other than Chris and According to Jim it doesn't really have a lot of competition but that doesn't make the quality this freshman sitcom is achieving any less impressive. Two weeks ago featured Justin hanging out with a college girl, and a chance to hear Adhir Kaylan's (Raja) real voice. This week got some great laughs out of scenes set at a Mosque, no small feat, and what both had in common was that they were funny, heart warming, and never insulting to the viewer's intelligence. AIA started off strong this fall with a great pilot - how can you not love a show who's nutshell plot is a Pakistani Muslim high school student who goes to live with a family in Wisconsin?!?! - but got lost along the way, heading into the treacherous TV waters of "ok but not memorable" until the show returned a few weeks ago with a string of episodes that more than fulfilled its potential. The series returns at the end of April for four more episodes and I urge you to check them out; there needs to be a place on the TV landscape for shows like this.

People Say I'm Crazy Doing What I'm Doing. Well, They Give Me All Kinds Of Warnings To Save Me From Ruin
What's flashed before my eyes the last seven days…Britney more than held her own on How I Met Your Mother this Monday, with a nervous energy I found charming. If someone who had never heard of her had tuned in, they wouldn't have given her a second thought, and I mean that as a compliment. The "two minute date" thing was really quite charming and the reference to Sarah Chalke's character leaving a St. Patrick's Day party early was clearly meant to make us wonder if she was indeed the "one". I guess we will have to wait and see…While I thought the Miss Guided pilot was cute, the two episodes that aired last Thursday were a cut above that, including a shockingly un-annoying Ashton Kutcher as the ultra cool substitute teacher. Loved that they used "Lindsay Lopez" as the name for their Perez Hilton-esque web site. Chris Parnell continues to be quite funny in what easily could have been a stock role…I have praised Medium quite a bit recently for its mix of creepy and human drama, but this week's episode was a little too Kiss The Girls for me. It didn't make me turn off the TV or anything but it was a little too skin crawling for my tastes…No Dave Foley on this week's New Adventures of Old Christine made me sad but the kissing Matthew dreams made up for it…Everybody Hates Chris has done a nice job of showing it's title character getting older (as in, taking a real interest in girls) without making it too jarring and throwing the balance of the series off…Have to give huge props to the Britney's New Look episode of South Park from last week. While the praise may be watered down by my not being a regular viewer, it was the best overall episode of the show I have seen, a great mix of laugh out loud funny along with some seriously biting social commentary. Pulling off that combination is quite difficult and the grace with which they accomplished it may make me check the show out a bit more…

TV Pick Of The Week
If you're not fully pumped for next Friday's final season premiere of Battlestar Galactica, Sci Fi offers up two specials tonight to fully get you in the mood. First up is Battlestar Galactica: Revealed, which looks to get everyone caught up on the key plot points. While the special features interviews with producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, I have a hard time imagining that they can really sum everything up in 23 minutes, but that shouldn't stop you from tuning in! Immediately following is BSG: The Phenomenon, a half hour look at some of the show's famous fans, from Seth Green to Brad Paisley to Joel McHale. Shockingly I was not contacted for this special but I won't hold that against the celebs smart enough to recognize the show for the genius that it is.

But it gets even better as starting Monday, Sci Fi is running (almost) THE ENTIRE FRACKIN' SERIES!!! Each day starting at 9 am they will run 8 episodes marathons so that by the time they get to next Friday's season four premiere they will have covered every minutes of the show. Actually, not every minute; not sure what the logic is but according to my Tivo guide, they are starting with episode 3 of season 1, so they are skipping the mini-series as well as the first two episodes, but after that it's all there for you. For free!

Don't miss BSG: Revealed and BSG: The Phenomenon this Friday starting at 10 pm on Sci Fi, and then don't miss the series in it's (up-to-now) entirety all week, also on Sci Fi.

Your columns are impossible to read... the paragraphs are waaaaaaayyyy too long and strenuous on my eyes.

Hey Al just a note on your calender. You went from Mon Apr 21 to Tues Apr 23. I noticed because they said last night that Reaper would return on the 22nd. And congrats on the twins.

Al, I like your column, because you highlight stuff, and I can focus on the stuff I'm interested in. Oh, I forgot, CONGRATS!!!

Capt. Smooth nailed it. I can run down all my faves in a few seconds. Best column on all of 411. Congrats on the kiddos.
