Babes, Bombs, and Blockbusters Movie News Report 4.29.08
Posted by Mike Gorman on 04.29.2008
An unexpectedly live report from the West Coast brings you the latest movie news including life imitating the box office for Amy Poehler, happy Hobbit casting, and a look at Sarah Michelle Gellar.
You read the teaser the right; your east coast host for the 3B's Movie News Report is coming at you live from Los Angeles. Sadly it is a family matter that has me here and not my own big screen debut but fear not loyal readers; while this week's report is shorter than normal it should contain a few new tidbits for your movie diaries. And let's not forget there's still the Tuesday Hot Shot, Sarah Michelle Gellar herself.
The G Spot
The G Spot is your place for the day's movie news with the occasional cameo from the land of television.
Number one film star to be Number one mom!
Amy Poehler has a lot to celebrate this week. Her new film, Baby's Mama was number one at the box office and now reports have surfaced the she and her husband, Will Arnett, are expecting their first child. Congratulations to this hilarious couple and I hope that Poehler can work her birth into a future Weekend Update on SNL!
Casting news for The Hobbit
With the recent announcement that Guillermo del Toro will be helming New Line's production of The Hobbit cast speculation has become a hot topic. It seems that two old friends to this film series are finalizing their contracts. If all goes well, Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis are set to join the film's cast. No word yet on who might play Bilbo...
Who's afraid of a video game now?
Apparently big studio executives are a bit frightened about the release of "Grand Theft Auto IV", the video game, coinciding with the release dates of summer blockbusters like Iron Man and The Dark Knight. They worry that the limited disposable income of the adolescent males all of these products target might be stretched too thin this summer. A quandary indeed I suppose for those involved with market the games and films yet it is nice to see the younger male audience making waves instead of the usual attention paid to the likes and dislikes of younger girls and women.
Hereeeeeee's Jimmy!
SNL Alum Jimmy Fallon has inked a deal to take over for Conan O'Brien sometime during the 2009-2010 season. This fuels the speculation that O'Brien is set to replace Leno once Leno's contract expires. I think that Fallon can be successful as long as he looks to his earlier work for inspiration and not his last few seasons on SNL. His self-important air during that time coupled with his shoddy skits with Horatio Sanz that usually ended in the two laughing at themselves are definitely not what we want to see in primetime. Why though am I worried that Sanz could easily show up in the side kick role once Fallon gets started? Yikes!
Her Couches are clear!
This week Oprah Winfrey will air a two part interview with Tom Cruise on May 2nd and 5th. Why should we care about Oprah? We shouldn't! But is it worth giving Tom a second chance to explain himself as Winfrey is promising to ask the hard questions about his involvement with Scientology and even his couch jumping behavior on her show. I mean, do we drop the coolness of Maverick in Top Gun from one little bout of crazy??? Ok, maybe we do and really it might just be fun to watch him flip out again! I know my Tivo is set!
Tuesday Hot Shot
Loved as Buffy Summers and quickly becoming a scream queen for the next millenium, Sarah Michelle Gellar is definitely a Hot Shot! Watch for even more big screen thrills from her as she takes on the lead role in Alice, a live action film version of the computer game "American McGee's Alice." After one last pic I leave you with her nomination and acceptance of her MTV Movie Award for that memorable kiss with Selma Blair in Cruel Intentions.
Join me next week when I am back East and loaded with new news for you!!
