The Planet Fun News 05.08.08: The MTV Movie Awards
Posted by Matt Richissin on 05.08.2008

Sup Playaz,

Welcome back to the Planet Fun. With the summer approaching there's one thing that has the American society in a choke hold of interest: No. Not the Presidential elections..... No... Not the ridiculous price of gas... No.... Not the MacGyver remake (well, maybe) YES! The MTV Movie Awards!

I know it's kind of easy to dismiss the MTV Movie Awards (particularly when it nominates I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry for MULTIPLE awards) but I have always thought at the end of the day they put out an entertaining product , and I've always enjoyed the concept of an award show that nominates performances of what people actually like. Obviously, I really enjoy comedies, and I'm sure you can find one of Will Ferrell's rants on this, but it's truly a shame that the comedy genre is always dismissed by the academy.

This year's show will be hosted by Mike Myers (and will air LIVE! on June 1st), so I do have some hope that this year's show could actually be good. After all, it was Myers who really made the MTV Movie Awards what they were when he originally hosted the show.

So without further adieu here are the nominees (mixed in with my personal pick as well as the P Fun news)

BEST COMEDIC PERFORMANCE

1. Amy Adams for Enchanted

2. Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Carribean

3. Jonah Hill for Superbad

4. Seth Rogen for Knocked Up

5. Adam Sandler for I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry

I was a little disappointed to see Jonah Hill be the nominee for Superbad. Even though I'm not a hundred percent sold on Jonah Hill as a comedic actor, I did think he did an excellent job in his role in Superbad. That being said, I thought without question both Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz Plasse were funnier in the movie.

THE PLANET FUN PICK: Seth Rogen for Knocked Up

I thought Knocked Up as a whole was really funny, and everyone involved in it was quite humorous, but much like 40 Year Old Virgin , Seth Rogen stole the show. For the "Dice Dance" alone he's gotta have the award, right?

BTW why is Knocked Up SO overshadowed by Superbad? I thought Superbad was only slightly funnier (if at all) yet it seems like Knocked Up was just completely dismissed

IF I COULD'VE PICKED FROM AN ENDLESS SEA OF NOMINEES: Without a question, John C. Reilly in Walk Hard. Which if you haven't seen (and judging by the box office numbers you haven't), SEE IT! Ya, I thought it was going to be stupid, too. But it's truly a GREAT comedy.

Speaking of "Comedic Performances", remember when I wrote about Rainn Wilson getting a feature role, no? Well he is, and it's got a new trailer out and to my surprise it actually looks VERY funny. I change my Fun Factor rating to a 8.25

While we're on the thought of things that are "VERY funny" exactly who deemed Tyler Perry's House of Payne the #1 Comedy Of All Time? Has anyone else seen this commercial? Can we just proclaim anything in a commercial? Can I start calling this the "#1 Column Of All Time" and just withhold the fact that the source was my mom?

BEST FEMALE PERFORMANCE:

1. Amy Adams for Enchanted

2. Katherine Heigl for Knocked Up

3. Ellen Paige for Juno

4. Jessica Biel for I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry

5. Keira Knightely for Pirates of the Carribean

You have to give it to Jessica Biel: I know there's no way to find out, but how many millions of dollars did her lingerie scene make that movie? Roughly how many guys took their girlfriends to the movies and unfortunately agreed to see Chuck and Larry solely based on that very scene?

THE PLANET FUN PICK: I'm going to shock the world (or the dozens of people who read my weekly column) and select Ellen Page for Juno . As I've documented numerous times before, I simply could not stand Juno . I hated the quirky lines, the desperate attempts for the screenwriter to show that she's cool, and just thought most of the movie was lost because those things detracted from the rest of the story. HOWEVA, Ellen Page was amazingly good. Her control on emotions was phenomenal and made a somewhat unrelatable character feel somewhat relatable. And she'd be the one I'd go with if I could've picked anyone.

BEST FIGHT:

1. Hayden Christiansen vs. Jamie Bell - Jumper

2. (Team America voice) MATT DAMON vs. Joey Ansah - The Bourne Ultimatum

3. Sean Faris vs. Cam Gigandet - Never Back Down

4. Tobey Maguire vs. James Franco - Spider-Man 3

5. Chris Tucker vs. Jackie Chan vs. Sun Ming Ming - Rush Hour 3

6. Alien vs. Predator for Kramer Vs. Kramer

Hey wanna know what won't win the award for best Action Sequence for the MTV Awards for 2011 (hosted by Lauren Conrad), Captain America:

Cinemablend reports that the leading candidate for the lead is none other than Matthew McConaughey (insert joke about him not wearing a shirt in the role here). I don't really get the decision making process involved in this film a. I think it'd be a poor casting decision b. why are they making a Captain America movie in the first place? I Know Iron Man killed it this weekend, but really? Captain America? Could no one pick up the rights to Zen: Intergalactic Ninja?

Also, I'm not even trying to be funny here, would this be the all time biggest movie for the homosexual demographic?

PLANET FUN PICK: Bourne Supremacy

IF I COULD'VE PICKED ANYONE: NICK FROST AND SIMON PEGG VS. THE NWA FROM HOT FUZZ

How is this scene not more talked about?! Isn't it the most awesome, funniest stretch of twenty minutes of film in a looooong time? Shaun of the Dead might've been better, but that action sequence at the end was pretty awesome. Thank god Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg are going to do at least one more movie.

BEST KISS

1. Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey - Enchanted

2. Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman - Step Up 2 the Streets

3. Shia LaBeouf and Sarah Roemer - Disturbia

4. Ellen Page and Michael Cera - Juno

5. Daniel Radcliffe and Katie Leung - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

How is there NO LOVE for Zombie Strippers in this one?! I refrain from making a choice in a letter of protest! FEEL MY WRATH VIACOM!

BEST MALE PERFORMANCE

1. Michael Cera - Juno

2. Matt Damon - The Bourne Ultimatum

3. Shia LaBeouf - Transformers

4. Will Smith - I Am Legend

5. Denzel Washington - American Gangster

I would've loved to go with Michael Cera on this one, but he couldn't have been in the movie for longer than twenty minutes and wasn't all that great. Else wise, it really seemed like this movie could've been named "Best Male Performance in a Popcorn Flick"

PLANET FUN PICK: WILL SMITH FOR I AM LEGEND (I guess)

Kind of a weak field, and somewhat of a weak year for male leads, but I thought as far as "performances" go you'd have to give it to Smith.

IF I COULD'VE PICKED ANYONE:

Let's get one thing straight; the real winner WITHOUT QUESTION should've been Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia for his performance in Sullivan Tire Commercial

BEST MOVIE

1. I Am Legend

2. Juno

3. National Treasure: Book of Secrets

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

5. Superbad

6.Transformers

PLANET FUN PICK: No brainer for me, Superbad

Hey, speaking of Superbad; according to Film Drunk it appears that Jonah Hill will NOT be in the second Transformers. I capitalized the 'Not' so it would be like Maury Pauvich announcing the results for a paternity test. Which is somewhat of a shame because the more I thought about it, the more I thought Hill would've been perfect in the role of the conspiracy theorist. PS: Look at Michael Cera's face in this picture.

BEST MOVIE OF THE SUMMER SO FAR

1.The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

2. ndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

3. Iron Man

4. Sex and the City: The Movie

5. Speed Racer

I think it's pretty fair to say that I haven't seen most of these movies. It's too bad The Dark Knight isn't in there, because I'd be willing to say that it'll be the best without even seeing it. And speaking of the Batman movies there's already word going around about the Third Installment of the new Batman series. Chris Nolan will be back, but the Joker won't. And no, wise guy, that wasn't supposed to be a joke, they were thinking of recasting. And that is because Heath Ledger is dead. Here's the details according to Cinema Blend

Our scooper tells us we'll get a lot more Two-Face. No surprise there. Anyone who's seen the recent trailer for The Dark Knight knows the current movie will be dealing with the creation of Batman's scarred, coin-flipping bad guy. It looks like Batman 3 will continue with his story. We couldn't get specific details from our source, but she says the third film will be referencing the Batman graphic novels "The Long Halloween" and "Dark Victory".

"The Long Halloween" seems to deal with a lot of the plot elements we'll see in
The Dark Knight. According to Wikipedia, it involves the Joker, and the creation of Two-Face. More importantly, it involves the evolution of the gang of criminals Batman fights into full fledged supervillains. "Dark Victory" is a sequel to "The Long Halloween", in the same way Batman 3 will likely be a direct sequel to The Dark Knight. "Dark Victory" continues the story of "The Long Halloween" and seems primarily focused on Two-Face, while introducing Batman's sidekick Robin. Does that mean we'll get the return of the boy wonder in Batman 3? If the story follows along this same track, it could.

Pretty pumped, aren't you?.... ya... thought so... think it'll be all right.

BEST VILLAIN

1. Javier Bardem - No Country For Old Men

2. Johnny Depp - Sweeney Todd

3. Topher Grace - Spider-Man 3

4. Angelina Jolie - Beowulf

5. Denzel Washington - American Gangster

PLANET FUN PICK: Another easy one for me Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men

I don't want to go onto too much of a rant, but this guy really has to be categorized as one of the best villains in cinematic history, right? Could not have been, or more frightening. He can take his rightful spot aside Mark Wahlberg's character in FEAR (LET ME IN THE F*CKING HOUSE!).

Gotta say I was a little disappointed in the MTV awards to not nominate Cloverfield in any categories. I actually thought it was one of the most fun I've had watching a movie in the theaters in quite some time. Just brilliantly innovative and a near perfect popcorn flick.

Interestingly enough, there are new photos of the monster from Cloverfield which have been leading onto more speculation that there'd be a sequel to the monster success.

I should note here that while director Matt Reeves has said that eventually there will be a second Cloverfield movie, his next project will be Wonder Woman so it'll be quite a while until we see the Cloverfield sequel (and I suspect there never will be one).

Breakthrough Performance

1. Nikki Blonsky - Hairspray

2. Chris Brown - This Christmas

3. Michael Cera - Superbad

4. Zac Efron - Hairspray

5. Megan Fox - Transformers

6. Jonah Hill - Superbad

7. Christopher Mintz-Plasse - Superbad

8. Seth Rogen - Knocked Up

This is actually the most interesting category of the night for me, and really shows how many 'break out' success stories we had in the past year... Let's b-b-break it down!

1. I think it's fairly easy to dismiss Chris Brown because I don't think his breakout was due to his movie role.

2. File em under Dynamite, Napoleon: Christopher Mintz - Plasse and Nikki Blonski. While Superbad was great and I was amazed on how much I actually enjoyed Hair Spray, I think it's fair to assume that these two actors may have seen the climax of their careers.

3. As I've mentioned before, I'm not a hundred percent sold on Jonah Hill. Not that I don't think he's funny, I just think that he has probably already reached his ceiling as a comedic actor.

4.. "It" You know it's a good year for new blood when TWO "it" people are eliminated but I think you have to take out Zack Efron and the smoking hot Megan Fox out here. I suspect these two will both have very successful careers, but I don't know if they ever get out of being 'on the cusp.' No matter how hard my friends at Tiger Beat might try convince me else wise.

THE PLANET FUN PICK: That leads us to our finale: Seth Rogen and Michael Cera. I've literally changed my mind about this one about 18 times during the process of writing this column. To make things easier on me, I'm going to eliminate the movies they were nominated for; if only because I thought both of them had a bigger 'break through' moment in a different movie (Rogen for writing Superbad and Cera for appearing in Juno). For me, the decision came down to this: If the two were to face off in the box office with two movies that looked equally funny Rogen would stomp out Cera, right? Seth Rogen is money in the bank at this point, whereas I think Cera might still be a movie away from being "That kid from Superbad" Cera, should and will have an incredibly succesful career but at this point you gotta go with Seth Rogen

Well that's it for this week folks! Feel free to leave comments on how big of an idiot I am, and what you would've picked!

I love the MTV movie awards, because they honor movies that people actually see. The award that I miss is for best dramatic pause.

When I was younger, and still reading comics, Zen: Intergalactic Ninja was far and away my favorite comic book.

I about died when I saw Cera's face in that picture.

"BTW why is Knocked Up SO overshadowed by Superbad? I thought Superbad was only slightly funnier (if at all) yet it seems like Knocked Up was just completely dismissed"

I have a theory about this. I think that it is not so much Apatow that drives the masses to the theatre, but Rogen himself that is doing it. People heard that Superbad was written by Rogen, therefore it gets more love.

Who is that chick sitting on Christopher Mintz-Plasse's lap in that picture above?

Posted By: Toddo (Guest)  on May 08, 2008 at 12:20 PM

The girl is Sofia Bush..... and I kind of agree with your Rogen theory. I think he started the ball of success but I think the Apatow name now catches people's attention. But again, I think you're right when it comes to Seth starting the success
