The Main Event Comic Book Reviews 6.28.08: Final Crisis #2
Posted by Dennis Twigg on 06.28.2008

Final Crisis #2
General: Grant Morrison has been given the reigns of the latest DCU crossover, but can his trademark zaniness and offbeat style shine through in a great story constrained by DC editorial mandates? The first issue left that question up on the air, but the second issue seems to have definitively answered: Grant Morrison's style will shine through, but the story may end up being a bit confusing in the end.
Writing: I think that its almost mandatory that mega-crossovers juggle a mega-cast that all but the most fanatic comic book fans cannot cope with. Its sad, but I accept that. Moreover, this crossover revolves around a pantheon of characters I know little about, nor have I cared to (The New Gods). I feel like a lot of the issue went over my head, and a number of plot threads don't even begin to make sense to me. In fact, the first time I read it I was confused and angry, but on a second read-through I found myself enjoying it. Things seem to be getting pretty bad for the DCU, but the excuse that "the bad gods won" does not adequately explain the sudden ability for villains to seemingly trounce heroes with ease now. To say I'm conflicted about this book is an understatement. What I can say is that there seems to be some serious high stakes and intrigue, even if I have questions about the actual storytelling.
Art: J.G. Jones does good superheroes. The action is crisp and the drama is high, but every once in a while one of the characters ends up looking slightly retarded with a squished face. The art has been fine, but I guess I was expecting to be blown away more than I have been.
Overall Score: B- . I could easily see this score going up or down a whole letter grade based on further thought and later issues, but for now, there just seems to be too much going on to really qualify as a good story.

I think Morrison has upped his daily drug intake. It also seems like this is not the "main" DCU, but one of the 50 other earths.
