The Main Event Comic Book Reviews 08.09.08: Final Crisis #3

Morrison brings us some more Final Crisis!
Final Crisis #3 General: DC's major crossover reaches its ‘pause' as DC takes time off after the ending of this issue to do some tie in issues. Thus far, the Final Crisis seems to have wavered drastically in its storytelling and internal cohesion. Will Grant Morrison and J.G. Jones show a method to their previous madness or will Final Crisis continue to sink? Writing: I'm not quite sure what's going on here. That's generally a bad thing, but the feeling of epic threat somehow drowns out the problems I have with the book actually making sense. It's a very strange read. In fact, I almost can't believe that it's a real mainline DC crossover. It all just feels so surreal (Morrison-esq) that I have trouble swallowing its DC-ness. This all puts me in the awkward position of liking what I'm reading without really understanding what I'm reading. The individual scenes are interesting, but the choice of them and the internal coherence of the story seems to be quite a mess. Secondly, there's a lot DC stuff I just don't know anything about. SHADE? Frankenstein? A bunch of new Japanese heroes? The New Gods having new bodies (and me not even knowing more than four of them even in their old bodies)? It's a tad overwhelming. Art: I like the art, but I feel like Johns does better in his super heroic pose downs (like the last page) than his more reflective moments (Alan Scott pondering a superhero gathering). That being said, the art is pretty cool. I think it does a good job of illustrating Morrison's script. Overall Score: B. As I said in my review, there are tons of elements that should make me not like this book, but I still enjoyed it. So, be warned, my score reflects enjoyment as opposed to quality!
"A bunch of new Japanese heroes? The New Gods having new bodies (and me not even knowing more than four of them even in their old bodies)? "
The Japanese heroes were introduced in the first issue. So there's that.
And the New Gods in mortal bodies was a part of the Death of the New Gods/Seven Soldiers arcs. Both are, quite frankly, kind of common knowledge for fans of DC.
And one more thing, dude if you're going to have a column at least write something with some length. I mean there really isn't much to go off of here at all, so why even bother?
You know in high school when your teacher had you watch a movie because they couldn't come up with a lesson plan, and to make it somewhat worthwhile they told you to write up your opinion on it? Well you slept through the movie and found out that the paper was due in 20 minutes so you went on IMDB, found the plot summary, and bullshitted half a page, while making the margins smaller and using bigger font to make it look like you'd written more. But it still is pretty useless and you failed.
That is what this was like.

Dude, that was a bit harsh. And the reviewer is correct. I read everything in DC and Final Crisis does seem a bit too jumbled in every issue. Instead of a jam-packed seven issue mini, why not extend it a few more to flesh out the story?

Right now I'm just not enjoying final crisis and the fact that they are bringing back Barry Allen upsets me since his death was one of the most heroic comic book deaths.
