411 Fact or Fiction Movies 09.12.08: Week 143
Posted by Ben Piper on 09.12.2008
Is Will Smith a bad choice to play Captain America? Will Rightous Kill match up favorably when compared to Heat? Should Ghostbusters 3 not be made? 411's Jordan Bruns and Steve Gustafson debate these and other topics in week 143 of 411 Fact or Fiction: Movies!
Hello, Everyone. It feels to me to be about the right time for us to get our Fact or Fiction action on. This week we've got self-professed movie geek Jordan Bruns going head to head with 5 & 1 mastermind Steve Gustafson. Let's find out what they've got going on their heads, shall we?
1. You expect the DeNiro/Pacino flick Rightous Kill to be just as good if not better than the last film they were in together, Heat.
Jordan Bruns: Fiction. Don't get me wrong, it looks like a decent movie. I'm excited to see the two of them in a movie where they'll share more than five minutes of screen time, but Heat was a well-crafted, multi-layered character study about a cop and a crook whose lives seemingly paralleled each other yet only converged due to circumstance. The biggest selling point of Righteous Kill is Pacino and De Niro playing opposite each other, something that's never happened before. That being said, this could end up being like the Mike Tyson-Evander Holyfield fight (the first one, not the "ear" fight) where Holyfield was an aging fighter trying to prove he still had it and Tyson was half-crazy and way past his prime. Maybe that's an unfair analogy to make, but it's the best example I can come up with.
Steve Gustafson: Fiction. First, I like that analogy and want to piggy back it, Jordan! Second, the hype and expectations for this film are already too high. There's no need to push it even further and compare it to Michael Mann's epic crime drama. Now saying all that do I think this movie is going to stink it up? No way. Russell Gewirtz had me as a fan since Inside Man. Plus, I know Pacino and DeNiro are going to bring the sickness with their talents; and the rest of the cast isn't too shabby either. John Leguizamo, Donnie Wahlberg, Curtis Jackson, and Oleg Taktarov...wait...THE Oleg Takarov?!?! Does 411mania/mma know about this?
Score: 1 for 1
2. Tyler Perry is overrated.
Jordan Bruns: Fiction. Overexposed is a better word. The guy's been working nonstop for how many years now? To say he's overrated would imply that he's a hack who's being hailed as "the next big thing" in Hollywood. If he were being called "the next Spike Lee" or something like that, then I would say he is overrated.
Steve Gustafson: Fiction. I don't even know if he's reached the tipping point on overexposure. Yes, he's getting a little backlash because of his success, but he knows his audience and they love him. I used to work for a distribution company and his VHS movies would sell out in the mom-n-pop stores down south. I have to admit that I'm impressed by his drive, hardwork, and talent. Yes, I said talent. For those that don't know he was watching Oprah she was talking about how it can be healing to put feelings down on paper, which inspired him to write letters of his painful childhood. These letters eventually became his plays. As you can see through his theater productions, tv shows, movies, and books, people relate to him. Overrated? Not yet.
Score: 2 for 2
3. While it looks real good, you don't expect the Coen Brother's new film Burn After Reading will find much of an audience in theaters.
Jordan Bruns: Fact. The Coen Brothers are immensely talented filmmakers who are loved by critics and have a very devoted fanbase, but their films have never been known for putting butts in seats. The only thing that helped No Country For Old Men's ticket sales was its overall dominance during awards season (including a Best Picture Oscar). I expect Burn After Reading to do moderate business at the box office and then develop a cult following like so many of the Coens' other outings (Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, Blood Simple, etc).
Steve Gustafson:Fiction. Man, this is a tough one. I'm going to say that it will be a weird mashup of Coen fans and those curious to see George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Heck, I think Pitt's been pretty funny in the trailers. Will this gross mucho bucks? Probably not, but I don't think it's going to flop. Righteous Kill will earn the top spot but I think Burn After Reading is going to be a solid second.
Score: 2 for 3
Switch!!!
4. Will Smith would be a horrible choice to play Captain America.
Steve Gustafson: Fiction. I mean, yeah, the devoted comic book community will be outraged. You risk having the movie go from Captain America to Captain Will Smith. But it's an interesting choice. It's risky. Kinda. You might alienate the superhero crowd with the announcement, but if done right you'll win them back by Comic Con. Think about it. How many times has the internet gone into a frenzy over casting that they don't understand? Remember Heath Ledger? When they announced him as the Joker people flipped! Will Smith as Sentinel of Liberty? I have no problem with that as long as they respect the character, give me a good script, and please... PLEASE..do not have Will pick up a shield and say, "I've GOT to get me one of these!"
Jordan Bruns: Fiction. Superhero movies are arguably more popular than ever right now, and Will Smith as an actor has an "everyman" quality that makes him very appealing to audiences. It would be a controversial decision, no doubt. But, like Steve said, many such casting choices were met with similar dissent but resulted in memorable performances. Will Smith could pull it off, I think. Then again, so could a number of other actors. In fact, this is the kind of role that could allow an up-and-coming young actor his first taste of stardom. With that in mind, Will Smith has nothing to gain by taking this role. He's not a horrible choice, but he's not a wise choice either.
Score: 3 for 4
5. You're looking forward to the return of new episodes of House.
Steve Gustafson: Fact. I'll make this short and sweet. I'm looking forward to ANY show that has a great cast, well thought out storylines, and don't insult my intelligence. Too easy! Do I need to pad this answer at all? Umm, for those who don't know or don't watch House it follows the life of an anti-social, pain killer addict, witty and arrogant medical doctor named Gregory House with only half a muscle in his right leg. He and his team of medical doctors try to cure very ill ordinary people in the United States of America. Check it out.
Jordan Bruns: Fiction. I don't watch that much prime time TV anymore, so I can't really get excited about the return of a show I've never watched. I'm not knocking it -in fact it may be really good. It just never interested me, or fit my taste.
Score: 3 for 5
6. You don't think that they should make Ghostbusters 3, even with the original cast returning.
Steve Gustafson: Fiction. Many of you will scream, "Sacrilege!," but I love Ghostbusters and would welcome a new movie. It's not like the first two are untouchable holy canon. It's dudes fighting ghosts! The potential is endless. WAIT! Let me make a note. I'm NOT down if they bring in Steve Carrell, Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd, and Jonah Hill. I'm a fan of them but it wouldn't be a Ghostbuster movie anymore. It would be the Knocked Up Virgin Pineapple . And yes, I know that sounds hypocritical after my Will Smith argument but I'm sticking to it!
Jordan Bruns: Fact. Just because Indiana Jones had a successful resurrection after a 19-year layoff doesn't mean the Ghostbusters will fare the same. If this was meant to be an ongoing series, they should have done it while the cast was still young enough to be believable in their roles. Who really wants to see a bunch of 60-year-old men hunting ghosts? That explains why they're going with the whole "passing of the torch" storyline. But seriously... the original Ghostbusters mentoring a younger group? Are you kidding me? I'm not saying that's not an amusing concept, but I'm not paying ten bucks to sit through two hours of it. I know a lot of people who like Ghostbusters but I've never heard anyone say "I wish they'd make a third one." The simple fact is I just don't think there's enough public demand for Ghostbusters III to make it successful.
Final Score:3 for 6
And there you have it. Jordan and Steve split the difference this week. Many thanks to them both for taking part.
If the studio really wants to make Cpt.America Black, Will would be my best choice IMO. But Personally I'd rather it stay true to the original, I don't know how many of you guys have read "The Ulimates" but that version of Cap would rock on the big screen
Posted By: Post (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 12:34 AM
Every person i know who is a ghostbuster fan has always said "I wish they would make a third"
Posted By: Greg Potocky (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 12:44 AM
Will Smith should be the John Stewart green lantern. I always thought he'd be a good choice for that role.
Posted By: Guest#4927 (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 12:50 AM
I would LOVE to see Ghostbusters 3. To paraphrase AVGN: with all the sh*t forced out of Hollywood's @$$hole, why not?
Posted By: Puff (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 01:04 AM
Captain America: Realistically, 40's America would have a white patriotic hero.
Ghostbusters 3: Ghostbusters 2 sucked, don't need to see a bunch of out of work actors rehash roles they already pretty much pissed on.
House: Hoping someone kicks him in the balls this season. Repeatedly. And I hope it's Wilson.
Righteous Kill: Hey, Brian Dennehy is in it, too! Don't be disrespecting the Brian!
Posted By: Katefan (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 01:30 AM
Will Smith should not be cast as Captain America simply because i wouldn't find it believable. What do I mean? I mean Captain America was created with the serum in the 50's and was chosen because he was a loyal and decorated soldier. In the 1950's how many black men do you think were held in that high regard. I'm sorry but in that decade I can't see the American Government giving it's coveted super serum to a black man, especially not first. That's not me being racist, that's just the way it was.
Posted By: Dan (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 02:10 AM
Why would Will Smith utterly and totally fail as Captain America?
In WW2, the Nazis were all about big, blond men who were the direct descendants of angels. No, really.
So who did Timely Comics choose to represent the United States? A man who was the visual representation of the Aryan ideal. Steve Rogers, post-Super Soldier Serum, looked to be the perfect Nazi, but as a character was100% American, through and through.
Using the Aryan stereotype to fight the Nazi party was some of the best propaganda the people could have hoped for. Captain America was a rallying point for the American people.
Will Smith, as good an actor as he is, is NOT that character.

I'm sure that anyone that doesn't like the idea of a black Captain America will be branded a racist by all the PC nazi's out there. How about we make Blade white? Or Black Panther? Same thing, right?
Posted By: nope (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 06:14 AM
To nope:
In the comics, Blade WAS white. It was only after the movies that they changed him to a black character.

cant wait for ghostbusters 3!!!
Posted By: fuzzy (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 11:03 AM
In regards to Ghostbusters 3:
Steve Carrell is a no. He would be WAY too over the top to be in it.
No to Jonah Hill. He was perfect in Superbad and good in his other roles, but would turn Ghostbusters into something it should not be.
Paul Rudd is maybe. I was thinking about who my cast would be and I didn't think of Rudd, but I think he could potentially pull it off.
Seth Rogen is a definite YES! He would be perfect in the movie. Don't make him a druggie and he would be GOLD in this movie.

Taken from wikipedia:
Blade was introduced as a supporting character in Marvel Comics' Tomb of Dracula #10 (July 1973), written by Marv Wolfman and penciled by Gene Colan. The artist recalled in 2003, "Marv told me Blade was a black man, and we talked about how he should dress, and how he should look — very heroic looking."
So sorry Mrw420, Blade did not start out as a white character in the comic books.
As far as Will Smith playing Captain America. I have not doubts that he could pull the role off, but that doesn't mean he should get it. I agree with what people are saying about the nazi tie-in with Caps original look.

Does anyone realize that Will Smith as Captain America was dismissed as a bullshit rumor about four days ago, right?
Derek Luke threw it out there in an interview for Miracle at St. Anna (a movie about black GI's in WWII...so it's understandable the subject could've come up in lots of different contexts), and once people started buying the rumor as fact, Marvel went on record denying that they had ever even talked to Will Smith about it.
Honestly, in terms of acting ability, if you compare the names of some of the other guys rumored to play Captain America, Will Smith is FAR from the worst choice...but in any event, it's not gonna happen. Period. So everyone relax.
Posted By: BJC (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 03:20 PM
Will Smith as John Stewart? I always saw Lawrence Fishburne playing the character.
Posted By: JMAC (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 04:27 PM
Thanks BJC, I did read it, but the way Hollywood is...rumors can be flipped back and forth. Still, I stand by support. I do have to laugh when people mention "believable" and "realistic" when talking about a movie based on a comic book. Also, the whole Nazi thing doesn't sway me. The movie could take on a whole new slant if you think about the 1936 Olympics and the impression Jesse Owens made. Especially when you consider that he was able to travel with and stay in the same hotels as whites, an irony at the time given that blacks in the United States were denied equal rights. Still, I know we are talking about Captain America, but if they do some creative casting it lends itself to some interesting ideas. A Captain America who defends freedom abroad but doesn't have the same freedom at home. Think about it! SOAPBOX...OVER!

Marvel did make a black Captain America mini a few years ago called "The Truth" or something. He even lives today in current continuity with his grandson being in the Young Avengers.
I wouldn't mind making that into a movie, but I would wait until they used the Cap everyone knows. Maybe introduce him in these movies, then do "Truth" as a prequel. I think Smith would be a good choice for this.
Posted By: JLAJRC (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 05:27 PM
Well if they are going to have Captain America played by Will Smith I think we can be sure that his orgin will be wiped clean and we will be given a hip trendy version of the guy.
Or they could just role with Earth X and get Bruce Willis to wrap a flag around his body.
Posted By: kinaj (Guest) on September 12, 2008 at 10:28 PM
Captain America is white. So is Kingpin and Catwoman.
I bet Marvel made a superhero movie based on a black hero and used a white actor, we would never hear the end of it.

They actually had a cartoon series in the late '90s called "Extreme Ghostbusters" where Egon & Janine mentored new young Ghostbusters. It was actually pretty decent for its time, a nice sequel to the Real Ghostbusters cartoon, and it even had a two-parter (maybe the series finale) where the other three original Ghostbusters had to help out or something. It's been forever since I saw that show, but the concept could work well for the big screen. That show took its content seriously, even for a cartoon, with a darker tone with a nice mix of sarcastic wit from the characters, and I think that would serve a film sequel well too. Make the tone dark, make the characters sarcastic to connect to the audience (Bill Murray-style), and make the inclusion of the original cast a key plot point rather than a gimmick. That's honestly the only capacity that I think audiences would buy them in.

My blood boils everytime somebody praises the character of Gregory House. "He is this really cranky, sarcastic, and arrogant doctor but he is amazing at what he does and he is such a smartass he is SO funny!"
Scrubs did it better three years earlier with Dr. Cox.
Posted By: Mike (Guest) on September 13, 2008 at 12:01 AM
The difference is that House is actually a believable human character whereas Cox is a cartoon.
Posted By: Vallejo (Guest) on September 13, 2008 at 12:23 AM
I'll refuse to see Ghostbusters 3 if Seth Rogen or any of the Apatow crew are in it. They don't belong in the same reel as the originals, just a horrible idea. I know it's "dudes fighting ghosts," but they're MY generation's 'dudes fighting ghosts,' not whatever passes for comedy these days, so it's kinda sacred to me, heh. Don't get me wrong, I liked 40 Year Old Virgin a lot, but the two styles just don't mesh at all in my minds eye.

Paul Rudd is cool and Seth Rogan has he's moments and I could see him in GB III but please God no Jonah Hill, this guy sucks and is not funny, plus he plays the same role in every film he is in.

yea, there would be nothing at all realistic to the character of captain america like having a black man playing the part of a man brought forward 60+ years after being frozen in a block of ice.
nothing at all...
and BTW, spaz monkey does make a valid point about the Aryan archetype for the character, so perhaps in any new captain america the studios should be looking to hire muslim actors to fulfill the same propaganda role.
we are at war with iraq, the taliban and al-queda right now, correct?
Tony Shaloub for Captain America!

Actually, it's much more believable that the military would test a Super Soldier Serum on a black guy than a white one. Medical experiments on African Americans--the Tuskegee Experiment, for example--are VERY common in our nation's history. The original Cap America story was of a white guy plucked out at random and given the serum. If someone was plucked out at random to test a dangerous serum, it would have been a black guy because it would have been easier to cover up if things went badly. It's the comics that are inaccurate, in other words, not the casting of Cap America as a black guy. Cap America really should have been a black guy to begin with, and probably would have been if the comics didn't have to sell in the South during the segregation era.
Posted By: The Great Hibachi (Guest) on September 13, 2008 at 04:04 AM
Will Smith (or any black man for that matter) for Captain America would be a bad decision. Just try to remember 2 movies where they changed white caracters to black: "Wild, Wild West" (oh look at that... a Will Smith movie) and "The Honeymooners".. those movies tanked. Of course the movies were also horrible so that didn't help either. But the fact of matter is: Captain America is a caucasian caracter... stick to it! plain and simple.

Just to throw in my own two cents, Tyler Perry IS overrated. Exactly what makes Tyler Perry writing and starring in 18 movies a year, while promoting black stereotypes from the 70's worth the kind of money and praise he receives? Hack, I say! Hack!
Posted By: Guest#2530 (Guest) on September 13, 2008 at 07:09 AM
Will Smith as "Captain America" is as "risky" as Barack Obama as "President of THE USA"
Plain and Simple

Can't wait for it with WILL SMITH as BILL MURRAY !!!!!

I adore Will Smith, he's one of my favorite actors. That being said...I don't like the idea of him as Cap. Cap will always be the blonde haired, blue eyed all american to me.
Also? I could totally see Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd in Ghostbusters uniforms, riffing on each other the way Murray and Akroyd did.

We all have a tad of racism in us, regardless of color, but the reality here is that quite a few high profile characters are black and taking the white ones to turn them black for marketing, like Nick Fury, is risky. I don't care what color he is really, but I know that changing the color of THE MOST ICONIC of heroes is a bad move. An important part: The USA as we know it was founded by White Protestant nutjobs and the African-Americans were brought here as slaves. Changing the most iconic hero from white to black doesn't fix all the years of slavery so stop trying to fix it with comic books.
Posted By: Necroz (Guest) on September 13, 2008 at 10:42 AM
I think we're all missing the essential point here. The Avengers could potentially consist of Robert Downey Jr., Ed Norton, and Will Smith?! GOLD!
You could get a broomstick with a blond wig to play the role of Thor and that movie would still draw!
Steve, if Will did use that "I've GOT to get me one of these!" line, I'd LMAO!
Posted By: Ryder (Guest) on September 13, 2008 at 10:48 AM
I want to see a Ghostbusters 3. I'm sure it won't be that bad.
I wouldn't care if Captain America was played by Will Smith. African Americans went through slavery, segregation, and their still being held down today, though in not as blatant a fashion as in the past. All of you people saying, "Well, if a white character can be played by a black, a black character should be played by a white! But all the PCers would pitch a fit!" please run yourself over with your Confederate flag-adorned pickup truck. Just be honest and say you think somebody black could symbolize America.
:House is overrated. I've seen four episodes, every ep has the same formula: person has weird illness. House's underling think they've got problem solved then realize they don't. House thinks he has problem solves, then finds out he doesn't. Chats with that Wilson guy who makes a remark that causes a light to go off in House's head, House cures illness. I don't care if Dr. Cox is more "cartoony" than House, Cox is a better character. House needs to get his ass kicked and taught some respect.

I wouldn't have a problem with a 3rd Ghostbusters with them. Reunite Romany Malco, Paul Rudd, and Seth Rogen and maybe Jay Baruchel or Jason Segel (who are both pretty damn funny) to play the new recruits. But what do I know, Im just an Apatow shill.

Let's be honest here, how much of the comic book audience makes up the gross anyway? They can piss off the comic book community as much as they want and it really won't matter in terms of making money.

Has anyone seen the results for the FRIDAYS box office? "Burn After Reading" grossed $6.5 million in first place while "Family" followed in second with $6.3 million. In third, "Righteous Kill," collected $5.7 million while "The Women," generated $3.7 million. Makes me curious how the rest of the weekend is going to pan out.

No one's saying a black man can't represent America. As long as you're an American citizen, you are a representative of the United States. It's a question of the character that was selected by Marvel to play the role of a soldier who volunteered (he wasn't randomly selected) to serve his country. That person was white. It's not racism. You can bring up Isaiah Bradley all you want. That's not the Captain America that was one of the main figureheads of the Avengers and Marvel for the last 60 or so years and it's certainly not the Captain America that Hollywood is planning on focusing on because it's not what the general populace has been used to. Most people know that the Hulk is generally green, Spider-Man wears red and blue tights, the Black Panther is African, Wolverine has funky hair and claws, and Captain America is white.

For those wanting a Ghostbusters 3 will have to realise one thing. Even if the film was to be made it can not be started until AFTER the game has been released. The new Ghostbusters game is essentially in story mode Ghostbusters 3 written and starring as the voice actors most of the main cast (Louis and Dana are missing from the game) plus Walter Peck (It's true he has no dick). So how that game ends will have to judge how the next movie (if any) starts.

Will Smith trade marked HELL NO !!! Does not belong in the Captain America mythos !
will smith is black - Steve rogers is not ! Plus i do not need the guy who i'm already supposed top believe is the cap America i have been following for years is will smith ( yes do to skin color ! ) but not only that but the guy how played Smith in MIB and HANCOCK !
Sorry i can't do it !

For the Avengers Movie, Thor will have to be a big dude and have good acting chops to pull off all the thee and thou speech. So the only choice is Michael Clark Duncan. He's huge and rocked in Green Mile.

"The difference is that House is actually a believable human character whereas Cox is a cartoon. "
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you your moron.
I will give you that recent Scrubs (season 7) is fucking terrible, but to say that a completely unbelievable and pointless character like House who garners no sympathy, likability, or even shows a method to his PMS like tantrums is not a cartoon compared to Dr. Cox? Come on.
And lest we forget that Scrubs has a different plot in every episode, compared to House where it is always, "Oh House you are so unconventional, I do no approve!" It's like a terrible buddy cop movie, but in medicine.

I love how Guys are saying "Cap is white in the comics so he should be white. You don't want a white guy playing Blade or MLK! Next thing you know an Asian will play Superman" and all this other nonesense. But these same people don't complain when popular stories like DBZ or Akira are taken and the leads characters like Goku and Kaneda who are Japanese are replaced with White actors instead of Asian American actors or Asians who can speak english and such. Then it's ok....righttt! Try taking a chill pill once in a while. As long as Cap is wearing the RED, White and Blue and the basic story remains intact the sky won't fall.

mrw420, where did you get the idea that blade was origanaly white? You pulled that out of your rear, and I'm calling you on it. I was reading blade years before it ever hit the big screen. Blade was allways a black man, If you honestly believe otherwise you are miss-informed end of story.

Umm so i take it all of you whined when they made the Kingpin black in the Daredevil movie as well? Its not entirely unlikely that they'd cast Will Smith as Cap .... He can't be Steve Rodgers sure but there was a Black Cap .. maybe the goal is to team them up who knows but seriously stop whining about it its sad really ... we all know they wouldnt do something like that Stan Lee wouldnt allow them to i think ... he usually tries to keep them sticking to the comic book looks ... I.E kingpin was supposed to be black to begin with ...

Will you fucking dunce, did you not read the comment I made right after that? I basically just summarized the entire Scrubs show for you. And it's funny YOU'RE calling ME a moron when you don't even capitalize your own fucking name.

"looking forward to ANY show that has a great cast, well thought out storylines, and don't insult my intelligence."
house has no well thought out storylines. basically every episode is follows the same pattern

Goku (the character) from DBZ actually wasn't Japanese, he was an alien, just Japanese animation, so any race could play him. The characters who ARE supposed to be Japanese characters are in the movie.
Also, do not make Ghostbusters III. The game IS Ghostbusters III essentially, so we don't need a movie reminding us how old and fat our heroes have gotten. And definately do not put the Apatow crew in it if you absolutely insist on it, their style is too different. They're probably not that funny if they can't curse every other word.

There should NOT be a GHOSTBUSTERS 3. Put it this way, it's so predictable, we can already predict that it will have a pass-the-torch storyline. That's how predictable a GHOSTBUSTERS 3 would be.
