411 Movies Zone News Report 11.11.02
Posted by Lionel Bohbot on 11.11.2002

From EmpireOnline.co.uk

A Harry Potter vibrating broomstick was taken off the market this week after parents suspected it was being used by teenage girls for more than pretend Quidditch matches. Complaints from appalled parents about the Nimbus 2000 model inundated toymaker Mattel but only succeeded in making the innocent plaything all the more infamous - one magazine even tested it alongside genuine sex aids. In case you were wondering, Mattel have stopped making the flying machine-love stick combo but insisted: "It's not because of the stories. It's just not a continued product in our 2002 line."

Look for those vibrators to show up on Ebay soon.

NEWS, RUMORS AND OPINIONS

Terminator 3:

Arnold Schwarzenegger talked to TV Spielfilm about the new female Terminator in T3: "She will kick ass. A person that you never want to meet in your life because she is more than devilish! She has plasma weapons and tries to kill me with them. With these special weapons she can destroy everything that she wants. Our fight scenes are really extreme, with the plasma weapons the TX can destroy almost a whole city and I must prevent that. But its hard to do this. More at this point I can't say. It's really top secret!"

Mr. and Mrs. Smith:

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) is in talks to direct this movie about a bored married couple who discover they are enemy assassins hired to kill each other.

Swept Away:

Madonna and Guy Ritchie's colossal bomb is taking another hit. The movie won't even be released in theatres in Ritchie's native UK. That's right; Swept Away is going straight to video in the UK. Madonna's probably going straight to the pills and expect Guy Ritchie to go straight back to his formula movies.

The Amazing Spider-Man:

According to an E! Online source, Robert De Niro could be up for the part of Doc Ock in The Amazing Spider-Man. Doc Ock is the main villain in Spider-Man 2. In case talks with De Niro fall through, Billy Bob Thornton would replace him. Sam Raimi's good buddy, Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead), already has the part of Lizard.

Lopez/Affleck engaged :

I think the collective reaction to this news should be "whatever". Expect them to divorce in 7-12 months. Will Matt Damon be a best man or a bridesmaid? You know what's sad? ET, Extra and all those other shows will actually cover this as the news *you* can't live without.

In case you're actually interested in reading the article:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Jennifer Lopez is engaged to be married to actor Ben Affleck the singer-actress revealed during a television interview to be aired later this week.

The announcement, made during an interview with Diane Sawyer of ABC News, follows weeks of media speculation which was heightened earlier this month when Lopez showed off to television cameras a pink diamond on her ring finger.
The two met on the set of mob comedy Gigli last year and also recently co-starred in a romantic comedy Jersey Girl. Both films are due to be released next year.

Californian Affleck, 30, who has never been married, will become 32-year-old New Yorker Lopez's third husband.

The couple cannot be married until Lopez's divorce from her second husband, dancer Cris Judd, is finalized in late January. Lopez filed for divorce in late July, citing irreconcilable differences after less than a year of marriage.

Report has circulated that the couple may marry on Valentine's Day Feb. 14, and Lopez confirmed during the interview they visited a Boston church together recently.

The interview, taped recently in Manhattan and Lopez's old Bronx neighborhood, will air on Wednesday on ABC television's "Primetime: Special Edition."

QUICK HITS

The Two Towers: A bevy of new pictures courtesy of WarOfTheRing.net.

Cat in the Hat: Pics of Thing 1 and Thing 2 are now up at Coming Attractions.

National Security: First pictures from this Martin Lawrence/Steve Zahn comedy are up at Movie Fever

MOVIES ZONE UPDATE:

Chris Williams updates his Popcorn Favorites with a review of The Lost Boys.

Miss Galatea takes a look at Murder By Numbers.

Jacob Ziegler makes his Oscar Predictions even though some of the nominees aren't even out yet. It's a fun read.

Dane reviews the brand new Spider-Man DVD.

BOX OFFICE REPORT:

Here are the numbers for this weekend:

Title Gross Pos. Last Week

1. 8 Mile: $54,464,000 -
2. The Santa Clause 2: $24,800,000 1
3. The Ring: $16,000,000 2
4. I Spy: $ 9,000,000 3
5. jackass : the movie: $ 7,200,000 4

Eminem becomes the first person since Jennifer Lopez to have a number one album and movie at the same time. Somewhere, Mariah Carey is drinking herself into oblivion. Somewhere else, Christina Aguilera is wondering where that new rash came from.

The Santa Clause has legs. A good hit for Tim Allen. Smart timing for the movie release. They could have released this movie closer to Christmas time but it would have faced stiffer competition from LOTR and Harry Potter, in terms of kiddie audience.

The Ring is still hanging around at number 3.

Meanwhile, Eddie Murphy is probably hanging himself or his career at this point. Enough with those buddy movies already.

Jackass will fall out of the top 5 next week. It's a funny "movie" but it only targets a specific demographic. Sane adults won't bother with it.

What's Your Favorite Recent Movie:

Sight and Sound Magazine recently conducted a survey to determine the Best Movies of all time. They surveyed 50 film experts and came out with this top 10:

1 Apocalypse Now
2 Raging Bull
3 Fanny and Alexander
4 Goodfellas
5 Blue Velvtet
6 Do the Right Thing
7 Blade Runner
8 Chungking Express
9 Distant Voices Still Lives
10 Once Upon a Time in America
10 Yi yi

You might be wondering where Citizen Kane is? Well, apparently, this survey only involved recent films.

So I'm going to ask you to name your favorite (1975-Today) movie. Be sure to explain your choice. I don't want to see "Fight Club because it RuLeZ!" Give me good arguments. I'll let this feature run for a week or more and then I'll post the best submissions in the Movies Zone News Report.
