Modern Family Review - 3.12 'Egg Drop'
Posted by Michael Adams on 01.12.2012

The Modern 411...
- Phil is preparing for a seminar for first time homebuyers, which he is making Hailey and Claire go to.
- Claire hit buy a dozen eggs since Luke is doing a project for school in which he has to drop an egg safely from 1 story high.
- Manny is working on the same egg project. He feels that Luke is going to have the best one since Claire will do it for him.
- Jay calls Claire to make sure she’s not working on Luke’s project. Claire takes this as Jay is working on Manny’s, so she will work on Luke’s.
- There are several talking heads about how competitive Claire and Jay are.
- Since Claire is now helping Luke, Phil enlists Gloria’s help with his seminar.
- Mitchell and Cam are meeting with prospective birth-mothers, which they describe as very difficult.
- Phil is rehearsing his seminar with Gloria and Hailey. Once they are done, the girls quickly run to the salon.
- After seeing Cam’s keyboard, the mother says that the father was a musician, so she’d love to hear Cam and Mitchell sing. Mitchell isn’t happy.
- While working on the egg project, Jay pays a visit to the Dunphy house to get something he lent Phil. Turns out that Jay has no ideas for the project and needs to get in Claire’s head.
- Jay and Claire decide that they are going to show off their egg droppers at the school later in the afternoon. Challenge accepted.
- Mitchell and Cam sing a very good and awkward version of “Don’t Go Breakin’ my Heart.” The mother thinks that Mitchell is a great singer, which casues Cam to get a little competitive.
- Gloria and Hailey leave the salon, only to find out that the car has been towed, since Gloria parked in a tow away zone.
- Meanwhile, Phil’s seminar is starting and he has no one to ask the important last question (“Is there a sixth key?”) and no one to introduce him, so he introduces himself and thanks Mike. Get it? I didn’t at first, but when I did, I had myself a chuckle.
- Claire tells Alex that even though they’re not supposed to have favorite children, Alex is hers. Alex realizes that Claire is just trying to get her egg drop project, but she won’t give it to her.
- Phil is now stuck waiting for Gloria and Hailey. Someone asks Phil a question, but Phil doesn’t answer it. Instead he makes it about the important 6th question and ends his presentation with “a bang”.
- The mother tells Mitchell and Cam that they are perfect and they should be expecting good news. To celebrate, Cam serenades her with a song, which makes her realize that she wants to keep her baby.
- Gloria and Hailey return to see Phil cleaning up. He is really upset, but doesn’t let on. Phil keeping his feelings in bothers Gloria and she tells him to let it out. Phil ends up screaming at Gloria for ruining something so important to him. Gloria is ecstatic.
- We see both egg carriers drop and land safely on the ground, but this isn’t good enough for the Pritchetts. They decide to go to the 3rd floor to see who’s is better, but when they see Manny and Luke on the ground below, they realize that they let their competitiveness get in the way of the project.

- The boys are worried that they are gong to get caught. When Jay and Claire come back down to apologize to them, Manny confesses that they played stupid so the parents would do the project for them.

- The bumper show Alex confiding in Hailey about her feelings towards Claire and surprisingly Hailey is listening to her and offering advice, until we see that Hailey is on her cell phone. Poor Alex.

This Week’s Top Quotes…
Alex: That design is my intellectual property. I think it has applications for unmanned space flight.
Hailey: Keep talking like that, and you’ll go through life unmanned.

Mitchell: Claire is the son that my dad never had. He just wanted someone to throw a ball in the backyard. I did once, but he did not attend.

Cameron: Well let me give you a basic biology lesson; you and I can’t make a baby! So, if she points to a lamp and calls it Uncle George, what are you going to say?
Mitchell: Pleased to meet you Uncle George.

Cameron: Look at is this way; we’re not only adopting a baby, we’re saving it from a life spent searching for East Dakota.

Cameron: Yes, she was upset. But on a positive note, what I take from this experience is I can sing!
Cameron: But what we didn’t take from the experience is a baby because she decided to keep it.

Character of the Week - The honor this week goes to Cameron. As usual, the boy’s storyline was a little short this week, but Cam was his usual funny and charming self…even though he was responsible for them losing the baby.

The 411: Yikes! Not a good episode. Other then letting us know that the adoption storyline hasn't been dropped, what did this episode do for us? We know the Pritchetts are competitive, we know that Gloria tries to get things out of people and we know that Cameron looks for constant validation for his abilities. The episode was funny and certainly had it's moments, as all of them do, but it was just not entertaining. They should have just played a repeat of a past episode instead. Perhaps it's a mid-season slump, but they need to get out of it. We already know that Fizbo will be making an appearance this season and with Valentine's Day just around the corner, I'm looking for our good friend Clive Bixby to return.

Final Score:  6.5   [ Average ]  legend

No offense to Michael Adams, but how is this a review? Its a recap of the plot, pictures, funny quotes, then a mini-review with the score. The actual review portion of this article takes up the least amount of space of all the segments.

I have to disagree big time here. I thought the show was great as always. The interaction between Claire and Jay delivered as expected and Phil stuff was awesome. The show had a good mix of one-liners and storytelling, just like every week and provided plenty of laughs.
I also agree that this is not a review, but a play-by play. Play-by-play of TV shows don’t typically make for a good read, as was the case here.

Better review/article coming next week. Got a little pressed for time last night and wanted to get the readers something at least!

Horrible review. If you can even call it that.

The episode was quite good too. Funny, charming and dude, nothing abut Phil? He was the star of this episode.
