Modern Family Review - 4.10 'Diamond in the Rough'
Posted by Michael Adams on 12.12.2012

The Dunphy & Tucker-Pritchett Family
Cam and Claire have volunteered to find a baseball field for Manny and Luke's little league team. While looking for the field of their dreams, they find a home being sold by the owner, and it's a steal. Mitchell and Phil join their counterparts and talk about flipping the house. Phil is all on board, but Mitchell is not. Cam and Claire tell Phil to talk with Mitchell, and we learn that Phil is also not prepared to throw their money away, but puts all the blame on Mitchell. After a series of text messages are seen by Claire and Cam, Mitchell and Phil are caught and their loved ones aren't happy. However, when Phil and Mitchell see what Cam and Claire did with the baseball field, they realize that they have the ability to flip the house, and the 4 of them become partners.

Manny and Luke are prepping for the big game, and Luke teaches Manny how to step into the pitch so that he gets hit and goes on base. During the last play of the game, this plan actually works and Manny scores the game winning run!

This was a fantastic storyline; by far one of the funniest stories this show has provided in 4 years. It was clever and creative and the writing was fantastic. The back-and-forth between Mitchell and Phil over text-message was hysterical, as was Mitchell's Bond villain moment with the cat! Great stuff. We did miss the girls in this episode though. Haley has a quick moment in the beginning but Alex was no where to be seen. I wonder if this episode was filmed some time during the beginning of her family drama?

The Prichett Family
Thanks to Shorty's girlfriend, Gloria is now equipped with a pre-natal microphone; now she can talk and sing to the baby, while driving Jay and Manny nuts. Gloria's singing gets so bad that Jay has to step in, and do something completely out of character...talk to the baby via microphone. Jay proceeds to talk to the baby non-stop, telling it jokes, reading it the newspaper, and never giving Gloria the opportunity to get on the mic again. However, after a small spat, they promise each other that they should never fight in front of the baby, which gives Jay the chance to tell Gloria she can't sing without any repercussions.

This was a pretty weak b-story. Was it funny? Sure it was, but weak. It didn't serve too much of a purpose, but the main story was our focus any way. I think my biggest complaint is Gloria's "baby bump". I guess there is no great way of making a non-pregnant woman pregnant, but Modern Family has that Disney money, so they should at least try a little better. I know this sounds like a silly complaint, but that big fake belly is very distracting, and as a person who recently spent 9 months looking at someone with a baby bump, I know that's not what it should look like!

This Week's Top Quotes...
Claire: So, what do you think? Can we turn this into a baseball field?
Cam: Oh yea, no problem. You know, back on the farm, I once turned an acre of corn into a snowflake shaped maze. It would still be there if our neighbor Billy Bob Scheinberg hadn't seen it from his crop-duster and said it looked like a swastika.

Manny: (to the baby via the microphone)Get used to that. Sometimes you just gotta let him go. Then he eats some sherbet and falls asleep.

Claire: Why does your friend have a chalker?
Cam: He used it to propose to a skywriter.

(Luke is teaching Manny how to hit a ball)
Luke: Will you choke up a little?
Manny: Probably when they play the national anthem.
Luke: No! On the bat!

Phil: Yea, I was a little disappointed we didn't go for the butt washing toilet, but otherwise...
Claire: You can wash your own butt for free.
Phil: Well that's not the same, is it?

Phil: I'm not proud of what I did, but I'm not comfortable squashing people's dreams. I'm a cheerleader! I'm the guy on top of the pyramid shouting 'Go dreams, go!' You know what's not a cheer? '2, 4, 6, 8, you are going to fail at this and lose everything we've worked for, Claire!'

Jay: Papa would buy 10 diamond rings to get that mockingbird to shut the hell up.

Cam: Ok, what did we learn from A League of Their Own?
Claire: No crying in baseball.
Cam: No, that Madonna's a lousy actress, and so are you.

Manny: I'm going to march out there and swing as hard as I can, and if every sports movie is correct, I'm going to smack that ball and everyone will chant my name as I round the bases. By the way, is it always counter-clockwise or do I get to choose?
Luke: I don't think it's going to matter.

Character of the Week...Phil Dunphy! No question! He was fantastic! Phil was at his funniest tonight, and that is partly due to a great counter-part in Mitchell. I'd like to see these 2 at odds more this season.

No new episodes the next few weeks, so to those who take the time to read this every Thursday, Happy Holidays to you and a great new year!

The 411: I loved this episode! One of the best of the season, and one of the best of the series. I thought it was one of the best written episodes they've ever put out and should defiantly be entered as their episode for writing when Emmy time rolls around. It was also a great episode for the family members, Phil and Mitchell specifically. The stuff they did during their "fight" was comedy gold! During the episode, a promo ran indicating that the baby is coming in January, which is exciting and sad, I guess. It's sad because it's the end of the one constant story-arc. However, now that Phil, Claire, Cam and Mitchell have purchased this house to flip, I think we may see another story-arc in the coming months, and that's a good thing.
