Against the Groen(ing) 11.23.07: Homer's Night Out - Episode 10
Posted by Cory Lynn Schibler on 11.23.2007

Welcome once again to Against the Groen(ing). Tonight is Homer’s Night Out; let’s get to the show!

Original Air date: March 25, 1990
Production Code: 7G10

Principal Cast
Homer: Dan Castellaneta
Marge: Julie Kavner
Bart: Nancy Cartwright
Lisa: Yeardley Smith

Written by Jon Vitti and Directed by Rich Moore

Chalkboard: “I will not call my teacher ‘hot cakes’”

Couch: The family piles in and the couch collapses.

We begin with Homer talking about how he has gained a bunch of weight. He says that he convinced his assistant Eugene Fisk to hit on a girl in Valve Maintenance, which he thinks is hilarious. Meanwhile, Bart flips through the novelty ads and orders a spy camera.

6 months later

Homer is once again complaining about his weight. He also tells Marge that he is going to the party of Eugene Fisk and the girl from Valve Maintenance to celebrate their wedding. We also find out that Fisk is now his supervisor.

That night, Bart uses his newly received spy camera to snap pictures of Homer dancing with belly dancer Princess Kashmir at the stag party.

The next day at school, Bart attends the photo club to get his picture developed. Soon, everyone wants a copy of the picture and it ends up all over the town of Springfield, including the gym where Marge works out.

Marge confronts Homer about the picture and promptly kicks him out of the house. Homer then goes to the bar and drinks for a while before going to spend the night at Barney’s apartment.

At work, Mr. Burns asks Homer for some advice so that he can be the ladies man that Homer appears to be. Homer gives him some standard fare advice such as wining and dining.

Homer finally shows his face back at the Simpson home and begs Marge to forgive him. She says that he set a bad example for Bart and that he needs to apologize to Princess Kashmir about how he treated her so that Bart will learn women aren’t objects.

Homer and Bart travel to many places of female entertainment searching for this woman. Homer finds her and apologizes for treating her like an object. He has her tell Bart about herself, and then he accidentally ends up on stage during her routine.

However, when everyone figures out that Homer is the “guy from the photo” he praised and invited to dance with all the women. Homer obliges, but then finally realizes what he did wrong and makes a profound speech about how important women are, which moves all the patrons to call their wives and mothers.

Marge arrives just in time to hear the speech, and shows her love for Homer by smooching it up as Bart begs everyone to leave.

Sorry for the short-form recap this week, but school just has to take priority and my teachers are not slowing down, even though Thanksgiving is this week. I promise to devote all I can to the next episode, as it is one of my all time favorites.

Until next week, keep going against the Groen(ing).

P.S. Be on the lookout for my review of season 3 of Mork and Mindy, which will be coming your way in the next week.

Season 1 of the The Simpsons is available here.

The 411: Not my favorite episode, but the show is still gearing up for something huge in a few seasons. Come season 4 this show will be firing on all cylinders. For now, this episode is perfectly acceptable but a far cry from the greatness to come. 7.0 out of 10.0.

Final Score:  7.0   [ Good ]  legend
