An Unkindness of Ravens 3.05.08: One Tree Hill 5x10 Report
Posted by Andy Clark on 03.05.2008

Hey, everybody. Quick word before I begin. I’ll be out of town next week so the report won’t be up. I’m not sure how I’ll cover next week’s episode. I may do a two-fer the following week or I may just skip it, depends on when I get a chance to view the episode. Don’t worry, I’ll be here to cover the big wedding episode in two weeks. On to this week’s show!

“Running to Stand Still”
Airdate: 3/4/08

Cold open. Nathan and Jamie are home from the game and Jamie is so excited that the Ravens won. Haley calls Nathan to apologize for being locked in the library and she is on her way home. Nathan tells Jamie to go to bed and Jamie wants to wear his jersey to bed. Nathan gets in the shower and is surprised…by Carrie. Oh no. Nathan freaks out and tries to get Carrie out of there…just as Haley walks in. Double oh no. Haley flips and throws Carrie out. And by throws I mean she grabs her by the head and freaking TOSSES her. Wow. She kicks Nathan out too despite his protests. Damn. In Peyton’s office Peyton walks in to find John (the douchey record exec from LA) waiting for her. He wants to sign Mia and belittles Peyton’s label. Peyton runs to go find Mia at the studio and Mia says she wants to stay with Peyton even though John said she made a mistake in signing with her. Brooke visits Owen at the bar and after he makes fun about how much work she doesn’t do she dares him to come to New York with her so she can show off her vast empire. Looking through the mail Lucas gets a postcard from Karen but gets another letter as well. It’s a letter informing him that Dan is up for parole. Nathan knocks on the door and asks Lucas for a place to crash since Haley threw him out. Lucas tells him about Dan’s upcoming parole hearing.

Haley serves Jamie breakfast but he starts asking questions about where Nathan and Carrie are. Nathan comes home and gives Haley his side of the story (minus the skinny dipping and the kiss in an effort to not make things worse). Haley says she needs time. Peyton confronts John and John points out that all great artists need a major label and that Peyton’s tiny label will just kill Mia’s career. At the Ravens’ practice Quentin’s hand is still bothering him and he has to go get it checked out. Carrie visits Jamie at school to say good-bye and tells Jamie that she loves him and wishes he were her son. She says that Haley hates her and that’s why she has to leave. No! You stay away from my little Jamie, dammit! I don’t care how hot you are! Brooke shows off her place in New York to Owen but its clear someone has already crashed there. They look in the bathroom and find Rachel OD’ed on the floor. Owen springs into action and runs her under a cold shower, slapping her to revive her. Brooke stands nearby and freaks out. Well she said she’s no good in a crisis.

Rachel is in bed and not dead and Brooke asks if she’ll be OK. Owen says she’s alive but not OK. He tells her to get ride of Rachel’s paraphernalia and Brooke reveals that she fired Rachel at Victoria’s request. Ha! I knew it! Somebody owes me $10. At the hospital it turns out that Quentin has a hairline fracture and is going to have to wear a cast. That’s not the evaluation he was looking for. And that doctor looks oddly familiar. Haley picks Jamie up from school and he’s mad at Haley for chasing Carrie away. She’s mad that Carrie came and saw him at school. Peyton finds Mia again and freaks out over not being able to compete with John but Mia assures her that she wants to stay with Peyton. Carrie has the audacity to come to the house to pick up her things and Haley gets all up in her grill. Carrie says that Nathan loves her and tells Haley about the kiss and the skinny dipping sessions. Haley kicks her out and tells her to stay away from her family. Apparently Jamie saw all this and yells at Haley that he hates her.

Rachel wakes up to find Brooke looking over her. She took the firing badly. There is a guy at the door and Owen lures him into the apartment and proceeds to kick his ass. Owen is pretty badass. He pays off the guy the money Rachel owes him and tells him to go away. Nathan and Lucas talk about Dan and his hearing on their way there. At the hearing Dan walks in and says hello to Lucas. John visits Peyton again and Peyton tries to broker a deal for Mia. Mia walks in and yells at both of them, calling Peyton a sellout. At the hearing Dan addresses the committee and lets them know that he is sorry and that he has lost something more important than his freedom, he has lost his family. Lucas speaks up and runs down all the bad things Dan has done. He says Dan should never be released and that he couldn’t possibly mean that much to his family if his sons never came to see him. That prompts the committee to reveal to Lucas that Nathan had come to see Dan recently.

In the car Lucas is mad at Nathan for seeing Dan, but he says that he is worried more about Jamie. In New York Brooke asks Owen about his knowledge about drugs and Owen reveals that he is a recovering addict, eight years sober. Owen lectures Brooke on her friendship to Rachel and says that she needs rehab. Owen leaves Rachel in Brooke’s care. Quentin is in the gym and Nathan comes to find him. Nathan talks about taking his senior year for granted and tells Q to enjoy every minute of it. Quentin makes sure to hide his cast from Nathan. In New York Brooke tries to talk Rachel into rehab but Rachel doesn’t want to do it alone. She asks if she can stay in New York with Brooke…

Lucas is writing and Nathan comes to apologize for seeing Dan. Lucas tells Nathan to go fix his marriage and that Nathan is going to be his best man. Lucas talks to his picture of Keith mentioning that he misses him. Haley tucks in Jamie and he asks if his daddy is going to be sad again. When Haley says that Carrie wasn’t a very good person and had to go away Jamie says that he wishes Nanny Carrie was his momma. Ouch. Mia confronts Peyton and it turns out Peyton brokered a big deal getting to use the contacts and benefits of John’s big label while still being under Peyton’s label. The whole confrontation earlier was just an act just for these purposes. Mia is heading out on tour so it looks like she’s gone for the foreseeable future. How great would it be if she ended up on tour with Chris Keller? Its coda time and we check in with everybody. Quentin angrily cuts off his cast, Brooke decides to bring Rachel back to Tree Hill with her, Lucas talks to the Keith picture, and the committee has come to a decision regarding Dan but we don’t see what it is. Nathan goes home to talk to Haley. Jamie is excited to see his dad and Nathan sends him outside to shoot around while he and Haley talk. Things look like they could be OK until Haley brings up the kiss. Nathan tries to be honest and it just makes things worse. Haley and Nathan get into a major argument and Jamie is outside the whole time. Unfortunately his ball falls into the pool and Jamie falls in after it. Nathan and Haley continue to argue until they see that Jamie is in the pool. They both rush outside and Nathan jumps into the pool to save him. Nathan pulls him out and apologizes for everything and he is so freaked out, but Haley pulls Jamie away and says that their marriage is over: she wants a divorce.

The 411: Wow. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen One Tree Hill quite so dramatic. Even with the school shooting episode, or dealing with Lucas’ infidelities, or Daunte running Haley over with a car I don’t think it ever felt as real as it did tonight. Rachel’s ODing scene was intense, especially with Owen smacking her around to wake her up. There was a lot of Jamie in this episode which was great, but it also was kind of heartwrenching. The Nathan and Haley dynamic was really powerful tonight. I knew that a separation was coming, it had to be, but that finally scene of actually hearing Haley say the words “I want a divorce” just hit me like a brick. Maybe it’s because they faked us out, thinking that the near loss of Jamie would bring them all back together only for it to be revealed that things were now so much worse. This was a tough episode to watch at times but I’m also reminded of why I love this show.
