Going Down to South Park 04.24.08: Super Fun Time

An Instant Classic
I have a new blog that I'd like for people to check out. It will include some thoughts on the goings on in the world of sports as well as some additional television reviews of different television shows. I will most likely begin writing about the The Critic while a friend of mine reviews House. And because my friend has been pestering me, my website will also include South Park reviews. However, they will not be done by me. I'll be waiting some time before starting the television reviews. For now please click for a taste of The Jerome Cusson Experience . Every click I receive helps earn me money. Now onto why you're all really here.
Before the show officially begins, we get a sneak preview of The Love Guru, a new film starring Mike Myers. Oh wow, this looks horrible. There was a time when Mike Myers was funny, but this looks close to being Eddie Murphy levels of unfunny
No one has enjoyed kicking Trey Parker and Matt Stone this season for some of the turdburgers they’ve put out this season. After a season of crap, I finally got rewarded tonight with an episode that will go down as an instant classic. What made this show so brilliant was that the kids got to be kids for the most part instead of little adults. There wasn’t some issue that was hammered home relentlessly for thirty minutes. It was just a damn funny episode that featured just about all the characters and included some of the best lines I’ve ever heard from the show. I can’t even begin to illustrate them, but with more time I’d go over some of them.
The essential crux of this episode has to do with two different threads. Terrorists take over a touristy type place called Pioneer Village while Mr. Garrison’s class is on a field trip. These terrorists are clearly based on the ones seen in Die Hard. The leader is called Franz too, which is just a hilarious nod to that film. The townspeople act in character through the entire show, even when their lives are in danger and the terrorists need that damn code to get to escape. Even when some of their fellow actors are shot and killed, the townspeople still do not break character. All they keep doing is playing dumb and pretending not to know what a phone or door code is.
Cartman and Butters get into their own adventure. Eric immediately realizes how lame this entire village is and wants to break out. The problem is Butters has been ordered to hold his hand until the two of them are back on the bus. You may remember this from your own field trips, having to hold some other kid’s hand. Butters takes this order to heart. He refuses to break away from Cartman, even when he has to break the rules with Cartman when he’s dragged to Super Fun Thyme, a sort of amusement area. We get to see a very funny montage of Cartman having fun and singing while Butters looks annoyed and bored. When the two kiddies are ready to head back, they notice a parade of cops who have responded to the terrorists taking the village hostage. Cartman and Butters sneak back, and never let go of each other’s hand. Even when they do get back into the village, Butters takes his orders so personally, even a terrorist can’t break this holding of hands. This mission is so personal Butters manages to lift Cartman’s fat ass and hits the terrorist with him.
Stan is able to save the day by dressing up as one of the townspeople and giving the codes to the terrorists. The police bust through the gate and it’s on. With all the terrorists captured and the clock striking 5, the actors finally break character and announce how to use the phone and the fact that everyone could have gotten out using a back exit.
There are so many funny moments in this episode that I can’t even begin to name them. A couple personal favorites are the terrorist flipping the burger and it sounding like money and the ending where Butters gets he and Cartman on the bus. Finally, the hands can be broken.
The 411: This was easily the best episode of the season. I’d be willing to call this an instant classic since I laughed out loud multiple times. When I think about all the crap I’ve had to sit through, I finally feel vindicated. I’ll see everyone in October. Thank God this season is over, and it ended on a high note. Maybe Trey and Matt will figure how to make funny episodes like this one again.
It was an instant classic, hopefully next season will be a lot better.

Best moment? Kenny declaring he doesn't want to see a child die.

I've been following your reviews of every episode that aired this season, and they've been, well... awful. Of course, reviews are just opinions, but your opinions aren't even worded well. You've spent about 1/3 of each review ranting about your personal life and about how everyone shouldn't criticize you; most of the rest of the review comes from you paraphrasing the episode.
You can get more insightful commentary from a Wikipedia article. Good luck learning how to express your opinions with more eloquence than backing up calling a season a "turdburger" with the word crap, several times.

Wouldn't call it an "instant classic" but it was still a funny episode.

Compared to last week's espiode, this one is genius. Arguably the best one this season. I liked the fact that there's wasn't any preachy message. For once, the show seems to set out to simply entertain.

Anyone else remember when all episodes were like this? When it focused on the kids and not some lame ass "message"? Gee, can't wait for the lame Lindsay Lohan parody next season...

Think any episode that involves Butters and Stan is an instant classic nominee - at least they ended the season on a high note!

Best episode of the season? I don't know, I liked the Canada on Strike episode a little better. Instant Classic? No chance. I long for the days when Cartman and Butters adventures made me roll on the floor laughing. Casa Bonita, Awesom-O, even Fun Time with Weapons. Those are classics. This one? A couple of chuckles here and there, and defintely better than most episodes this season, but an instant classic it was not.

This episode hugely benefitted from the lack of a message. No politics, no "I learned something today", and it freed them up to be FUNNY for the first time this season. I wouldn't call it a classic but it was worth watching.
Roe: Why would you keep coming here if the reviews are "awful"?
I welcome your honest opinions, Jerome. Matt and Trey seem to have read you and paired Cartman and Butters as the stars this week. I never LOL'ed, but I was entertained and there's a glimmer of hope for the show if they stay on this track.

"Matt and Trey seem to have read you
and paired Cartman and Butters as the stars this week." Jason, your just as much of a tool as Jerome. He should stick to the other stuff he shilled at the beginning of his review and drop South Park.

I'm going to rant a little here, not about the article but about Comedy central in general, since no one has really ranted about it as much I would like to see.
Anyone else agree that "the Love Guru" seems to be another failure movie? And that Comedy Central had to show the preview before a prime time show for anyone to even take notice of Austin "guru" powers 04?
As well, anyone else irritated by the major push of the "Root of all Evil" show that reminds me of nothing more then trained monkeys fighting while attempting comedy? Just honestly, I would like to go one commercial break without seeing an ad to watch "Root of All Evil". At least Lewis Black didn't make negative comments against South Park like he has previously done with past commercials. After he did that, I've decided to never watch he "show".
/end rant

Couldn't put it better myself. This "reviewer" is such a hack its unbelievable.

Really, is there not something that can be done to get a decent reviewer of South Park on 411? Someone who actually gets whats going on and has an idea of the history of the show and story lines? I would imagine he still has the job because his awful writing is actually producing more hits because we all check in every week to see just how bad this week's review is going to be. Alas, we're defeating ourselves. STOP READING THIS GUY! Please... I am, until someone new comes... I can't take it.
Posted By: WhyDoIBother?! (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 12:46 PM
I've read your review but I don't understand what was so bad about the other episodes. I mean I really enjoyed "Major Boobage" and "Eik! It's a Penis", but I guess that's just me. But yea, I did like this episode as well.

I was disappointed with the entire season - but it remains my favorite show on television. The reviews for this season have been fine - lay off the guy. What I can't comprehend are the people actually "happy" or "relieved" that there are no "message" episodes. The message episodes are precisely what set South Park apart. They take heads - everyone's heads. They're the only show that isn't stuck in singular, left-wing dogma. Instead they ridicule everyone - and often the left more than the right, which is, frankly, a breath of fresh air. It always has been. Even though they're a hollywood entity, they dare to sh*t where their money is made. Most shows just basically shuck and jive the same exact crap in some bizarre, insulated, self-satisified group-think echo chamber. The best episodes we can agree are the ones with the kids being kids - Warcraft, Fellowship, Fun Times with Weapons, Trent Boyett, Ginger Kids, etc. But the message episodes are true, satirical, societal gems that spit in the face of easy liberal jingoism.

This was a good episode in a season lacking good episodes.

411,Can we put up a poll to get rid of this guy?
Jason,
People come here to read a review of the show. If said article is weak and not really well written, the writer needs to be called out for it and replaced. It is
Oh and ML2, I thought the same thing about "Love Guru", that just looks horrendous. Myers is done.
Posted By: Jason Saloser (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Best moment of the show is when Butters punched Cartman while he was crying. The look on Erics face was classic!
Posted By: Slapbunny (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 02:26 PM
killah, jason and roe, if this writer is so bad, why not write your own reviews and submit them?
Posted By: spfan4life (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 02:27 PM
Actually I wouldn't mind attempting to write an article review over the newest episode of South Park. How do you submit articles for reviewing here at 411?
Posted By: ML2 (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 03:07 PM
yeah, it was good, but if this is the only one you liked, you obviously are no South Park fan, or just too simple to understand a lot of what they're goin for.
And also, you're also kind of wrong in the fact that THIS ISNT THE END OF THE SEASON, if you knew anything about how the show goes, the 2nd half of this season begins in the fall. Seriously dude, that's such a minor thing that someone who reviews the site should at least know.
Please don't come back when they do, you can write your other reviews, I don't care about them, but seriously, just stop. I read 411 not because I want to read things I agree with, but I do want to actually read stuff that doesn't suck, which is why I come to this site instead of the others.
"411mania.com because we don't suck."
Posted By: Drue (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 04:22 PM
The people whining about Jerome CLEARLY haven't been reading the RETRO SP reviews he's been doing here before the new season began. If you read those you would see he is a fan and knows what's going on.
As for "Root of All Evil" it's one of the best shows CC has ever produced.
Posted By: JLAJRC (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 04:31 PM
I've been following the reviews of his reviews and they've been, well....bitchy.
Waaah.
Posted By: Zack (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 04:34 PM
What people who get defensive of "Jerome bashing" don't get is that his reviews suck. I don't care if he likes the show or not. That isn't what review is for. They are just horribly written, whether you like the show or not. Please 411 remove him, most people obviously feel the same way and the ones who don't, just don't have any valid counterpoints. Let him stick to simple minded shows and just drop SP.
Posted By: Jerome Saloser (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 04:54 PM
Lewis Black is funny, he show is not.
Posted By: ML2 (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 05:00 PM
ML2, you can send me a sample at stone9cold@aol.com. Since there is so much interest in South Park, I'd be open to adding another review. Thanks.

i think the cheeseing episode was the best this season. i dont understand how anyone can think differently. we all know south park had to tone down and send sum kind of msg so the show wouldnt get cancelled so gorget about the good old days of south park and take it for what they give u or else dont watch it. i can honestly say i enjoy every single episode of southpark from day 1. the show is absolutely hilarious.

*sigh*
You...you annoy me so much Cusson. This was far from the best episode of the season. Funny, yes, but I have laughed much heartier in other episodes. You only like it because it centers around your two favourite characters. If anything, this episode proved that there isn't actually much humour left in the Butters character.
I don't care about your opinion anymore, but for the love of Christ, please improve your writing skills. They make me cringe every week.
Posted By: Jimmy (Guest) on April 24, 2008 at 11:21 PM
I don't think that this season (or should I say, this half of the season) is over yet. IMDB shows another episode that will be aired next week. Which makes it painfully obvious that Cusson does not like this show, and does not like to review it. This is the second week in a row that he has assumed this is the season finale, when in fact it is not. Here he is hoping its over, and every week I hope there is at least one more episode.
Here's hoping they go out with a bang.

actually, if you look at sp's website, this was advertised as the mid season finale. jerome sort of got it right. it's the "mid season finale."

You're right, I went back to IMDB and the air date for episode 8 is TBD so I guess I spoke out of turn on this one. Sorry. Still, he clearly does not appreciate the position he has here and is obviously glad to be done with it.
