Since I had a free Sunday night, and this was the season finale of Family Guy, I decided to review this brand spanking new episode. I was originally going to write about last week’s, but my VCR didn’t work. With my birthday coming shortly, I shall be getting a DVR. Onto the show…
Peter Griffin and his family are at the veterinarians, and Peter isn’t happy. Peter makes a joke and we hear the sound of a cricket. Of course, Mayor Adam West is the one with a pet cricket. Brian is having some stomach problems, so this is why they’re all waiting. Meg says she wants to be a vet, and Peter has a great response. He says her job will actually be to gain 150 pounds and write Ugly Betty fan fiction. Wait a second. They have fan fiction for that? Peter notices a parrot and immediately takes a liking to it. I’d say it’s because they’re both equally annoying and voiced by Seth McFarlane.
Lois says he shouldn’t take the parrot, but if you know Peter, you know he doesn’t listen to his wife. He takes the damn bird anyway. The doctor, whose name is Dr. Jewish, walks out and says that Brian will be alright. The dog just ate one of Stewie’s used diapers. No, that was not Indian food, Brian. Dr. Jewish then mentions that his intern will take care of them now that he’s done treating the dog. The intern is a beautiful blonde named Anna. Chris notices her and is smitten. He even sings about her with a little help from Cleveland, Joe, and Quagmire.
Later at The Drunken Clam, the guys are watching some television when Peter brings in his new pet parrot. This pet parrot begins repeating a little bit too much of what Peter’s been saying. Joe mentions that he looks like a pirate. Why did he say that? That’s just a bad idea waiting to happen. Chris is back at home with the rest of the family, but he really wants to see Anna again. Lois says Brian has to get sick again, so Chris lifts Meg’s shirt and the dog pukes. As did I, but just a little.
Remember how I said Peter hearing the pirate suggestion was a bad one? Well, here he is with some friends from when he was a fisherman (Man, that was a long time ago.) As pirates, they begin pillaging Goldman’s pharmacy and have somehow managed to get a cannon. A random British driver, so random there wasn’t a name given, is trying to bring some sugar cane and tobacco to some undisclosed place. Peter and his band of pirates have a very funny chase scene with this British driver. The cannon is used and there is a very good sword fight. While the pirates get all the supplies, Peter sadly has to deal with a badly injured parrot and the British gentlemen goes down with his car while humming the British National Anthem.
Peter and the family do end up back in the vet’s office. The parrot has died, but Peter asks if it died with dignity. Other then convulsing, flopping around, being kicked into urine, emptying his bowels, and finally being thrown against the wall, it did keep his dignity. Chris grows a pair and asks Anna out on a date and for her number, not before dishing out a little too much information. Chris says Peter will move onto something else. Cut to Peter breaking a pipe organ and saying he’s the owner of a cattle ranch.
COMMERCIAL-We’re off to an okay start. The pirate sequence was kind of stupid, but Chris being in love has a lot of potential.
Chris and his date are at a restaurant entitled Italian Food. That’s certainly getting creative and cute. I wonder what they serve there. Anna talks about working for a veterinarian while is being his usually awkward self. He keeps asking if she’s had sex with a dog. For some reason, she hangs around and they even kiss. Back at The Clam, Chris asks the guys for some sexual advice. Chris doesn’t want to ask Joe, since he’s a monster on wheels. Joe is being mentioned as a father. It would be nice if we could actually see his kid. Funny moment as Peter decides to use Joe’s loud crying as his ringtone. Anna and Chris hang out some more. Anna spills something but has to go to work, leaving Chris to clean it up. Peter yells at his son for doing such a thing and gives him some advice. He says that Chris should treat women like dirt. When Chris does, she breaks up with him. Joe and Bonnie then inform Chris that they’ve had what Joe calls sex.
COMMERCIAL- This episode is actually developing into one of the better ones. A good act three will really put this one over the top.
Chris is lying down in bed when Lois comes into console him. After some miscommunication, we flashback to the last time Peter made a mess of someone’s life. It was 1994 and it was O.J. Simpson. As untimely and classless as this joke started out, it became very funny, especially when Simpson said he could be an usher for Brown and Goldman’s wedding. Peter is yelled at by Lois for some horrible advice. Peter then tries to set Chris up with various women and that doesn’t work out so well either. One woman is even Stewie dressed in drag.
Chris just wants Anna to come back. Lois tells him to go the vet’s office and just talk to her. Chris hits Brian with a chair and off they go. When they arrive, Brian is in bad shape and is wobbling before eventually falling over. Chris says he is not a jerk (Just ask Brian) and they make up before leaving. Brian is left on the floor. The final insult is Stewie kicking Brian in the gut.
The “No Fat Chicks” award for best line/moment of the show: Peter not being able to get the bullfrog out of Chris’ room might be one of the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on this show. The complete lack of noise and no dialogue just made it such a great and funny moment.
The Meg Griffin award for worst line/moment of the show: Being dumped and being dumped on really is something different
Most Random Cutaway: E.T. and Tom Hanks in Philadelphia
The 411: This season has been a mixed bag with some good and bad. This, however, was a fantastic way to end. The show had a real plot and focused far less on cutaways. I haven’t laughed at a Family Guy like this in a long time. That’s not to say I’ve hated every episode. But this one was very good. The part with Peter and the bullfrog will surely go down as one of the funniest moments in the history of the show.
Are you fuckin' kidding? I thought the bullfrog sequence was one of the most
bland and boring things i've seen on the show. I hate it when they beat a dead
horse down longer than expected. This episode sucked as a whole. Couple good
moments like Adam West and the cricket and the ending. That's it. Then again, I
thought the latest season of South Park was good, and we all know that story
with you.

I agree that the cutaways aren't really that great but this episode had some
good ones. The OJ one was hilarious. The goo or whatever for kids, the
answering machine from the 80s, and the two guys calling each other from the
40s all were great. The episode itself was one of the better ones too.

That bullfrog sequence dragged on. I get what kind of joke they were going for
(see Sideshow Bob and rakes) but this one felt forced and not funny... even 10
seconds later.

Wow, you found the bullfrog sequence funny? I liked the episode and all but that
went on 10 seconds longer then it ever should have
