Just Another Day At The Office Retro 06.28.08: Hot Girl Review
Posted by Seth Roy on 06.28.2008
A new girl enters the office — to sell purses — and the guys go crazy. Dwight buys a purse, and Michael wastes $1,000.
It’s the final episode of season one of The Office! Hot Girl! Whoo!
Michael Scott is talking to Jan about a new incentive program, though he seems pretty bored with the conversation. Michael can reward his top seller with a prize, up to $1,000. He wants to pick the prize for himself…
Michael: “First what we have to do is find out what motivates people the most.” Dwight: “Sex.” Michael says no…
Then Pam wants to talk to Michael about someone who wants to sell handbags in the office. He first says no, until he sees her, and she is a hot girl. Michael: “Cock in the henhouse.” Dwight: “Cocks in the henhouse!” Michael: “Don’t say cocks.” These two are great!
Michael introduces himself to Katy, and then tells her she is the new, improved Pam. Which is awkward. Then he gives her the conference room for the day. Dwight is prowling around. She asks for a cup of coffee when Michael offers something…He tries to act cool about it. He wants to go get Starbucks for her. She declines. And he goes into a diatribe about breaking down barriers.
Kevin goes over to Pam and asks if she is jealous because there is another girl around. She says no, and he says, “She’s prettier than you.” (I disagree. I mean. The hot girl is hot, and whatever. But Pam would be more my type. Not that I have a type. Because I’m getting married. So I don’t have another type. (Sorry. Just had to put the disclaimer in there. I may be talking about hot girls. But that is just because the title of the episode is “Hot Girl.”)) Pam tells Kevin he was rude.
Katy has everything Dwight looks for in a girl. Nice skin, teeth, hair and breasts. For his children… “The Schrutes produce very thirsty babies.”
Michael wants to introduce Katy to everyone in the office. He goes to “Oscar the grouch” first. “Do you believe he never heard that?” Katy: “No, I don’t believe that.”
Pam walks out of the bathroom and bumps into the purse girl, then talking head: “It’s nice having Katy around. It’s another person for Michael to, um…interact with.”
Michael introduces Katy to Toby. When they have something in common, Michael tells her Toby is divorced. Michael lives by the rule of no office romances. Then he says he lives by another rule: “Just Do It. Nike.”
Roy, Pam and Jim are in the break room. Roy tells Jim to go after the purse girl. Jim says she’s not his type, then Roy asks if he’s gay, followed by, “What is your type?” (Pam, of course, is sitting there.) Jim says, “Moms, primarily. Soccer moms. Single moms.” Roy: “That’s disgusting.” Kevin: “Stay away from my mom.” Jim: “Too late, Kev.” (Aside: I have to say, I’m surprised at how good this episode, and this whole season one, really is. No, it’s not on par with the second and third seasons, but it still is very good.)
Katy then walks in the breakroom. Jim looks over at her. And Roy says, “Man, I would be all over that if I wasn’t dating Pam.” Pam: “We’re not dating, we’re engaged!” Roy tries to recover. Pam is pissed. And she walks out. Awkward moment with Jim and Roy there.
Jim is Pam’s go-to guy for her problems like work and Roy.
Jim tells Dwight that Katy is perfect for him (Dwight). Dwigh says Michael is talking to her a lot. Jim tries to tell him that he’s the Assistant Regional Manager, which Dwight corrects him by saying he’s the Assistant to the Regional Manager. Jim tries to encourage Dwight.
Katy: “Guys are my best customers. They usually by the high-end stuff. … For gifts. They don’t know what they’re looking at, so I make suggestions.”
Jim tells Dwight to talk to her, and if that gets awkward, to buy a purse. Dwight: “I don’t want to buy a purse. Purses are for girls.” Jim: “That’s not necessarily true. Do you read GQ?” Jim tells Dwight they’re like mini briefcases.
Jim gets Pam to watch Dwight buy a purse. He starts beating the purses on the table. Dwight buys a purse and wears it out of the conference room…Funny stuff.
Pam buys a purse next, and talks to Katy about being engaged. Michael invades and makes everyone uncomfortable. He asks Pam about her lunch break. Michael shows Katy the $1,000 coffeemaker he bought for the incentive program. He compares coffee to cocaine, and says Dunder-Mifflin sold more paper when people did cocaine. Hmm. I wonder what MY bosses would say if I said something like that…
Katy checks her phone. Her ride bailed on her. He offers to give her a ride. And she eventually accepts after he won’t let her not accept.
Dwight asks Michael’s permission to ask out Katy. Michael grants it, but tells Dwight he’s giving her a ride home. This worries Dwight, and he asks Michael if he loves her. Michael doesn’t know how he feels.
Stanley buys a pink purse, and Michael walks in with coffee. Michael talks with Pam, and reveals that he has a futon, which makes Pam and Jim laugh a lot. Roy walks over and asks Pam if she’s still mad at him. He tickles Pam on Jim’s desk, which makes Jim feel weird. Pam, in talking-head-mode, calls Jim, “like a brother.”
Dwight asks Katy out on a date. And she declines. Angela is in the room looking at purses. She likes gray, dark gray and charcoal.
Michael grabs Ryan to help him clean out is car, which is a huge mess.
Jim eventually goes in and introduces himself to Katy. He wants to talk about purses. But he’s just there to look.
Pam talks to Jim about plans for the weekend. He reveals that he’s going to see Katy. She feels good for him. Pam is helping Roy’s cousin move. (That’s the difference between dating and engaged/married. Dating: They’re going to see a movie and get dinner. Engaged: They’re moving a bunch of crap.)
Michael talks about being a ladies man and talks about his symmetrical face.
Pam is putting on makeup, and looks up abashedly. I guess she’s trying to look prettier, now that Jim is interested in Pam.
Now, at the end of the day, and everyone is leaving. It is dark outside, which is odd, considering it should only be about 5 p.m. Michael learns Katy and Jim are going out for a drink. He is sad, of course. Jim is a gentleman and opens the door for Katy, as Pam looks on while Roy is driving the truck away.
Michael makes a weird comparison between a one-night stand and employees. It doesn’t make sense.
Thoughts: This was a pretty good season one finale of The Office. I used to be pretty rough on this season, until I’ve been watching it for the past month and a half. I definitely suggest watching the whole season, if you never have, because there are a lot of funny moments, and you can see where we’ve come to get to the end of season four.
Katy is a fine character. She’s nice enough, and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Dwight, though, is the absolute star of this episode, as his constant insistence on talking to Katy, and going so far as to buy a purse, is hilarious.
The Jim/Pam/Roy saga also advanced here. They really moved slowly with the whole storyline, and don’t really address it until part-way through the second season, then at the end of the second season.
Enough about all of that. “Hot Girl” was a good episode, with a lot of character development, some funny moments and images, and more of Michael being the worst boss in history.
The 411: Good season finale. Mostly, The Office has very good season finales, and it started with this one. While there is no huge shocker here like in seasons 2 or 3, viewers still are left wondering what is next. Watch this episode for many reasons, but especially for Dwight. He is spot on here.
