The X-Files Recap: Episode 19 - Shapes: Part 1
Posted by Brian Cramer on 09.09.2008
For one week only, Twitch pretty much gets the column all to himself.
Here's the situation going on right now. I recently started a day job at Target in an effort to occupy my time when I'm not DJ'ing. Sitting at home doing absolutely nothing during the day when I could be out making money just wasn't cutting it. Unfortunately, this has taken me from having way too much free time to virtually none. I'm in the process of figuring out what day will be best to write these recaps up, but it's difficult without a set work schedule. The bottom line is, I need you fine readers to bear with me while I get my shit together.
This week's column is going to be broken up into two parts as a result of this very situation. To whet everyone's X-Files appetite, I'm going to put up Twitch's Take for this part. I will post the second part, which will contain my recap (and thoughts on Unforgiven, which I'm trying to get watched) as soon as possible. If the powers-that-be decide to post it before next Tuesday, then it will be up early. If not, look for it same X-Files time, same X-Files channel.
Hey, Twitch here. When this episode first aired I was just shy of my 12th birthday. I really had no idea this show was so old.
Anyways this show has to do with Indians. Excuse me: Native Americans. We've gotta be P.C. here.
So a father and son shoot a beast and come to find out it's a Native American. As being a long-time descendant of Natives, I find this offensive! I do not now, nor have I ever resembled a beast. Except for perhaps a few months in high school. I was a confused kid.
Well, Scully and Mulder are on the case and it turns out to be the very first X-file given by J. Edgar Hoover. I mean I don't know what vacuums have to do with all of this, but whatever.
Mulder gets the pleasure of talking with an elderly Native American chief guy. Have I mentioned that I've always wanted to chat with an elderly Native American chief guy? Share a peace pipe and just shoot the shit, ya know? I've also always wanted to learn karate with an elder Japanese man. I have many dreams.
So turns out the son Lyle was hurt by this creature before they killed it and now he's one of them. Werewolf style. So he turns into one now, kinda like Sirius Black but in a more violent way. Did I mention I'm a huge Harry Potter dork?
So the animangus rips his dad apart, hangs out with Scully for a bit, and eventually he gets killed. At least he got to hang with Scully first.
So it all comes down to the fact that it's an evil spirit that can change a man into a beast. And it will be back in 8 years. It's kinda like a menstruation cycle but longer, and out of the two, I think I would choose the beast.
The 411: A run-of-the-mill MOTW episode. Nothing bad but nothing fantastic either. It provided a little backstory to the X-Files themselves but that's about it.
