My Doc Talk 3.19.09 : My Na Na Na
Posted by James Craig on 03.19.2009

Well, it has been a while, but we're back after 5 weeks and this week's episode was a good way to ease us back into Season 8. By ease, I mean taking us back to a stripped down episode, being very reminiscent of what we have been used to since the series started up.

As most episodes tend to go, we are given 2, sort of 3, story threads to follow, one dealing with Turk, the other floating in and out from an interaction between The Janitor and Dr. Cox and Jordan. For Turk, he was dealing with having to break it to a father that his son stood a good chance of being paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of his life after being in a car crash. JD was there to give him a pep talk and some advice on how to deal with the situation because, after all, JD is the one who has the great ability to relate to his patients and ease them into bad news. JD tells him to not get too emotional about it and if he feels the tears coming on to picture the ground hog(?) from Caddy Shack dancing, but also, to under no circumstances instill a sense of false hope for recovery from the condition. Turk, of course does just that and says that there is one thing he can think of that could have a chance of working. What Turk fails divulge is that is is treatment he seen being talked about that day on Sports Center. Oops.

Once Turk realizes exactly what he did, he starts to worry about the ramifications of his treatment suggestion and goes to Carla for advice on what he should do as any negative ramifications would certainly affect both of them. Since Carla is the sensible one, she asks what would Turk do if it was one of their own children in the same predicament? Of course the answer from Turk was that he would do anything and everything he could and so he went on with the Cold treatment he seen on tv. Thankfully, the treatment worked and Turk's desire to help the young man out was rewarded with a happy ending.

Moving onto the other story thread revolving around the relationships for both Cox as well as Janitor. Both men found themselves puzzled over the actions of their respective significant others. Perry was being bombarded by Jordan for wearing his wedding ring again. Not and odd thing, but seeing as they are actually a divorced couple, the wedding ring would raise an eyebrow or two. Janitor's puzzlement came from his girlfriend, Lady's pulling away from him when he wanted to hold hands, like as he put it, normal people do. It' was interesting to watch as the two men had to deal with their own situations...in reality, we seen more of Jordan trying to figure things out than Perry. As the day went on, both Janitor and Jordan were prepared to take drastic action in order to solve their own problems, but Elliott of all people was the one to offer helpful relationship advice and bring the two back from the brink of relationship suicide.

As each of the two went to try and get to the bottom of what was bothering them, they were confronted with answers to their questions that they did not expect. For Jordan, it seems that Perry was getting more into the idea of being part of a real family and while it did make him happy that his wearing the ring annoyed Jordan, he was doing it for himself as he grew into his new state of mind. Janitor, who was prepared for Lady to dump him, was shocked to learn that she didn't want to hold hands because she was a germaphobe. She was shy about it, but felt it time to come out to Janitor. He told her that he loved it, even if it was "weird".

The 411: This wasn't a ground breaking episode in any way, but it was solid. It continued building on each character's personal growth this season and helped ease us back into the season by dealing with the mostly with the characters we are most familiar with (and Lady). I think I actually liked this episode more as I had time to digest what I had seen.

Final Score:  7.5   [ Good ]  legend
