Before we began I need you to take a deep breathe. Hold it. Now let it out. We need to clear something up. As a member of Generation X, I'm asking everyone to just let it go. Let go of those feelings of pain from the attack against our childhood. Let go of the anger of having our favorite toys pillaged to supply Hollywood with the newest blockbuster. Let go of those deluded memories that our childhood contained perfect cartoons, comic books, and action figures. Because, guess what? They weren't perfect. When it comes to G.I. Joe we've always dreamed of a live action movie but what were we expecting? Did we want it to remain true to the cartoon? The comic book? Were we looking for a mature, grown up film that debated the idea of war? Over the years we've clung to the idea that what we grew up with is untouchable. We've placed our memories on a pedestal, crossed our arms, and grimaced if anyone tried to tell us otherwise. In a sense, we've become a generation who has all the cool toys but doesn't want to share them. Let’s end this.
Now, on with the review...
Perhaps no other movie in recent history has drawn such harsh criticism and hate than G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Even the latest Transformers had its share of supporters. The internet was set ablaze in shock and disgust off of several trailers and the movie itself was dismissed before it even came out. But now that it has opened, what’s the verdict? Does it deserve the scorn or have we misjudged? As a fan of the cartoon series and a serious lover of the comic book series, I’ve run the gauntlet of emotions when it comes to the live action movie. I did my best to go into the theater with an open mind and a softened heart. When I walked out of the theater my first thought was, “If this movie came out in 1987 it would be considered an instant classic! Young lil Steve would have loved this!”
But it's not 1987.
You're going to hear a lot of adjectives describing this movie. Relentless. Loud. Exhilarating. Thrilling. Aggressive. They all fit. See, they throw so much at you that you don’t have time to take in what you’re seeing. That seems to be a trend with movies these days. Hasbro and Paramount Pictures previously collaborated on Transformers franchise and it shows here. The experience I had was comparable to playing a video game while riding a roller coaster in the middle of a three ring circus for 2 hours. Also, like Transformers, G.I. Joe will divide audiences down the middle. You either get it or you don’t. And in the end, Paramount is going to have another successful franchise on their hands.
The film kicks off in typical action-packed sequence, with the All-American soldiers Duke (Tatum) and Ripcord (Wayans) being attacked while transporting a set of hi-tech military warheads that contain nanomites, microscopic robots that can eat through any material. Duke's former love Ana/Baroness ( Miller) steals the warheads and attempts to kill our heroes, but is thwarted by the guys and gals of G.I.J.O.E. (Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity). Making up the Alpha Team is Breaker (Taghmaoui), Heavy Duty (Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Scarlett (Nichols), Snake Eyes (Park) and General Hawk (Quaid). Duke and Ripcord are recruited, offered spots on the team, and taken to their training facility, "The Pit", where they are trained in combat and weaponry. Seems the Baroness, Storm Shadow (Lee), and McCullen (Eccleston) are intending to use their new weapon of destruction to spread terror and control the world. Duke, Ripcord and the rest of the Joes find themselves racing around the globe to apprehend Cobra’s leaders and stop their plans before the world is taken over. The action zips along as the team races from to find the nanomites, prevent their activation, and bring down Cobra.
Is it a lot to take in? Yes it is. It's overwhelming at times, but director Stephen Sommers, represents a new type of Hollywood filmmaker. Like it or not, this is direction action films are going. But don’t judge G.I. Joe by his previous work, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, or Van Helsing. Sommers keeps the action moving, juggling each effect to maximize a sensory filled experience. I'll be fair; he deserves credit for making a coherent film, keeping the action scenes distinctive. He doesn't stop and take time to explain what's going on because he keeps it simple. If you are looking for a good old fashioned good vs. evil, this movie certainly has that going for it. While the movie teeters on the edge of ridiculousness several times, another director could have easily taken the plunge into laughable territory. The movie stays true to the animated series and has the violence happen in cartoonish style, at the same time balancing humor, drama, and an unwieldy large cast. Credit has to be given to a script that doesn't take itself too seriously and has fun with it. Speaking of fun, I did notice that in the movie, MARS/Cobra attacks the Eiffel Tower which is a nod to the cartoon series. In the first episode of the The M.A.S.S. Device, the first landmark Cobra attacks is the Eiffel tower. Nice touch, if it was done on purpose.
Let’s talk about this cast and this is a HUGE cast. They introduce the roster and while some get more attention than others you wonder if they would have been better served by cutting down on the main characters. They give you enough of a back-story to make you want to know more about each one on-screen and little more. I mentioned that they did a good job balancing everything, but saying that, they touch upon several interesting stories in their own right, but not with any depth. You get flashbacks that are crucial to the movie, like the younger days between Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, the Baroness and Duke love story but when you add in The Doctor/Rex connection, a love triangle between Duke, Scarlett, and Ripcord, McCullen's back-story...there is a lot going on! When it comes to the acting, they've pulled in an ensemble of solid performers. Who stands out? Sienna Miller chews each scene up nicely, having a good time as the Baroness and looks good in the tight leather outfits while doing it. Rachel Nichols, who proved herself here, plays a great Scarlett. Keep on eye on her. Ray Park takes Snake-Eyes and runs with it. I have to think that in some studio office they are looking to see if they could make money spinning him off into his own movie. Surprisingly, Wayans provides the comic relief and semi-romantic part, which he does effectively. Some are going to find him lacking, but he fits. Dennis Quaid is mostly onscreen to walk around, bark at his soldiers, and act like the tough old school General. The real test is on Channing Tatum. I was impressed with his performance in Stop-Loss and keep waiting to see more range from him, which he seems to hold back on. It’s not really on display here. He’s got the strong screen presence, but it's going to take a meatier role than this to propel him to the big time. On the side of the Cobra, it's a mixed bag, with Ecclestone's McCullen not given enough to do and Vosloo's Zartan being seriously underused to give any sort of indication what his character is about. Lee's Storm Shadow is pretty cool, I'll give him that. As far as Cobra Commander, this will draw the most ire. I didn’t like his mask. That was obvious. Seems like the hooded one didn’t make the cut and was redesigned as the filmmakers found that version too similar to the Ku Klux Klan masks. Have to love the over-thinking on their part. Joseph Gordon-Levitt does well, with what he gets, and I’m interested to see where they go with him in the sequel.
What bothered me most was for a covert unit that isn’t supposed to be secret they don’t do a very good job keeping it under wraps. Several times in the movie they make a point of telling you they aren't supposed to exist, but everyone knows General Hawk, the President of the United States throws around their name in casual conversation, and they make their appearance known by the massive destruction they leave behind. Also, while the script stays even, the dialogue is the same simple jargon that we've heard before. This is a movie that really let's the action do the talking, leaving us with such lines as, “I’ll never let any man touch you,”, "When all else fails we don't", and “We need to get Ripcord out of there!” While it works, it’s nothing we’ll be quoting years from now. When it comes to CGI, overall it's done well, if a bit uneven, with only the underwater sequence at the end being the most offensive. Speaking of offensive, much was made of uniforms (or lack thereof) and the Delta-6 accelerator suits. Yes, they walk around in black leather, with little to distinguish themselves and the accelerator suits are used to an almost over-the-top effect, the good news is, they were bulky and heavy for the actors to wear and for any planned sequels, their use will be reduced.
So where does that leave us? G.I. Joe is all about the action and it delivers it with wall-to-wall adrenalin charged, pumped up hoot hollering cartoonish abandon. The theater I saw it in was packed with kids and I can tell you without question, they had a blast with this. In a way, I was jealous. Yes, we can sit here and pick it apart for the dialogue and the inane plot. But what does that accomplish? Two groups of people will see this film. The fans of the cartoon/comic book and people who have no clue what any of that was. In the battle between G.I. Joe and Cobra the only thing that matters is the good guy wins. And this movie never forgets that. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra fuels adolescent excitement and imagination as well as the source material that inspired it. There’s a lot to dissect in this movie. But I will say that in wins in one very important point. It keeps the spirit of the cartoon/comic book. No matter how it veers into cheesy, over-done territory, the spirit is alive and that mattered to me. Times have changed my friends. What we call entertaining popcorn flicks have a new definition and we better learn how to keep up or we’ll end up becoming the bitter crowd we used to make fun of when we were growing up. The action and explosions on screen are the new stars, no matter how much we complain about it. This movie might not be great but its fun. And what more can you ask for from G.I. Joe?
The 411: Like I said at the top, I would have loved this when I was a kid. If you liked Transformers, this is right up your alley. But it’s time to stop using a trip down memory lane to judge the new breed of action remakes. G.I. Joe delivers what it’s supposed to: reintroducing the team as a live-action adventure series to a new generation. It’s a fun trip. Who knows? 20 years from now kids might be up in arms that they are turning the live-action G.I. Joe movie they loved so much into a cartoon. And now you know…

Was so stupid that it made my head ache.
You can have a comic book/cartoon movie be campy, loyal and still have a working brain - see Spider-Man 2 or X-Men 2 for example. This was just PAINFUL to sit through. And I was born in 1978, I grew up with GI Joe.

Good review steve. I'm glad that someone on 411 mania didn't write a bull review because they messed up the characters. I loved the origins of duke and Ana / Baroness, Thought it worked well and made the story more meaningful. I'll deffintly be picking this up. It was very entertaining for two hours. And the women in the movie was hot. What can you not ask for?

don't judge gi joe by his previous work? two fantastic films light years beyond gi joe (the two mummy movies) and one just as mediocre?

As an origanal Joe fan this was still awesome non stop action with character plots.
1. My 3 kids that love the old cartoons and cartoon movie loved it all the way to the credits.
2. The suits were kept to a minimal but its part of the early 2k era so they added and no damage done made for a little comic relief.
3. The back stories were cool done in flashback mode just like a cut from a comic scene.
4. The theater we were in was made up of teens and adults mostly and I did not hear a single complaint if anything was said it was that was better then I thought or nothing like the first trailers made it look.
Posted By: Daniel (Guest) on August 08, 2009 at 01:03 AM
I purposely did not read anything on this movie and also avoided the commercials and trailers. That said, this movie was well worth the money and will be seen again this weekend. The dvd will look good in my collection when it's released!

It seemed to me like they were trying to make to movies. One that obviously has sequel written all over it, but on the other hand if no sequel comes out, the good guys still won.
Posted By: nanoman (Guest) on August 08, 2009 at 01:14 AM
I didn't see a Duke, Scarlett, Ripcord love triangle.
The Rex/Doctor thing probably could have been revealed in a sequel. The whole Cobra thing was kind of thrown in at the end.
Posted By: nanoman (Guest) on August 08, 2009 at 01:17 AM
This film should end with Michael Bay sitting in his Hollywood mansion pushing a red button and then the world exploding.
Posted By: G.I. Jim (Guest) on August 08, 2009 at 01:21 AM
Was really impressed by Miller and Nichols. The women were more kickass than the dudes, excluding Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow.
The Rex/Commander thing could be seen a mile away.
I like how everything wraps up nicely but then opens right back up at the end. The sequal will be good, if they improve on the CGI. The planes looked horrible. Way overdone.

Good review. As someone in your same age bracket (I'm guessing) I came in with the same apprehensions and fears, but I came away pleasantly surprised. I am anxiously awaiting a sequel.

Didn't let go of anything. Went into it as an adult who grew up a fan of the toys and cartoon and loved the flick.

Very good movie!
Way more enjoyable than that Transformers horseshit.

Aside from the shit CGI, it was kickass.
Chaning Tatum needs to GET OUT of Hollywood.
A helluva lot better than Shitformers 2.

The only thing I hated was Cobra and Destro's masks. Man, what happened to color? They all where shiny stainless steel.

I grew up watching the Gi-Joe cartoon as a child and I've collected the toys. With that said, I loved the movie. There were unpolished special effects and cheesy one-liners(not unlike the horrible old cartoon I used to love) but the movie didn't suffer much from this. There was a lot of elements borrowed from Star Wars and I loved that about it because I'm a huge Star Wars fan. As for Cobra's mask, I really dug it when it was finally shown. I had seen it before and thought it looked stupid but on screen, I thought it looked pretty cool. Overall it was an awesome movie. If I would have been 10 years old, it would have been the greatest movie ever. Go into it with an open mind and have fun!

Yeah, that intro alone told me all I needed to know. Add that many caveats and you know you're going to be seeing someone making excuses for a piece of shit movie.
This is supposed to be G.I. Joe. It's not supposed to be "the guys that bought all the black leather at the X-Men's garage sale." It's not supposed to be "the guys that wanted to be Power Rangers." There is ZERO reason to screw with the franchise this drastically other than the lame "the writer wanted to put his mark on the film." Yeah, you know what you get when a writer / director does that? Fucking CATWOMAN.

Caught it last night and I had a blast watching it. So did the people in the packed theater I was in. We've got to stop judging movies before they come out and give them a chance.

Surprisingly, i really enjoyed it. I thought it was going to be a train wreck but it was actually good. Definately had the spirit of gi joe with all the over the top stuff. My few trivial gripes didn't ruin the movie in any way for anyone...
Duke should have been played by someone older. That being said the kid was okay.
Marlon Wayans should have just played striker, one of the original joes back in the day..ripcord was white in the old one. And before people start crying racisim, i could care less about that. I just wish they would have kept things consistent to the source material
Brendan Fraser should have been lt falcon instead, the young wise ass from the old ones.
Other than those little nit picks I loved every minute of it. I was as shocked as anybody I said that! Looking forward to the sequal

PORKCHOP SANDWICHES!
Posted By: Alyaz (Guest) on August 08, 2009 at 12:56 PM
I really enjoyed it too. Maybe its because I was expecting worse, but I actually recommended this to my friends. I'm a HUGE GI Joe fan with thouands of dollars worth of Joes. Most of us are split into love ROC or hate ROC. I hate the new toys, but was keeping an open mind about the movie. By no means is it a great film, but its great fun. Take your fun with you.
Also, I think Sienna Miller just saved her career. She's terrible in everything but was easily the highlight of this film. To get THAT performance from HER should win Sommers' some sort of award.
Posted By: beezy (Guest) on August 08, 2009 at 03:21 PM
This was better than Transformers 2...but that sucked too so its not saying much. I'd watch it again on dvd but would not spend money on it in the theatre again.
Posted By: Butters4Prez (Guest) on August 08, 2009 at 09:25 PM
was that brendan frasier I saw in the scenes where Duke is jousting Snake Eyes, and Frasier is like "ok, theres nothing to see here". It looked like his character was either Flint or Lt Falcon. Can someone help me out?

I remember playing with GI Joe when it was ONE GUY!!!!!!!!!
The cartoon always disappointed me in the 80's and I'm sure this movie will too.
GI Joe was ONE MAN! It's still new to me damnit!

nice review... i thought they did a good job of not following just the tv show or just the animated movie, or just one of the storylines in comics.. they did a good job of blending pieces from all.. bringing in that cobra commander was a scientist before he was the "spineless leader"
of course the chicks were hot and sienne miller played an awesome baroness.. glad they didnt change her voice. that was my most hated part of tv show... cant wait for sequel... channing or faser woulda been better as falcon i agree... even though i hate him i think he did a better duke than marky mark would have (he was their first choice for role).... loved the movie... and will definately see it again and buy the dvd...
dont like serpentor but would love to see how they would make him look

The only thing I can think of is that most everyone that posts here must be severely mentally challenged. I like a good, goofy, fun movie like everyone else, but this movie was so bad it hurt my feelings. And the majority of the audience I was with felt the same way. People were actually laughing at the inanity of it all. The perfect movie for a new episode of "Mystery Science Theatre 3000." But having said all that, if you enjoyed it, more power to you.
Posted By: Guest#1366 (Guest) on August 09, 2009 at 07:42 PM
saw it and i wasnt impressed...the suits annoyed me beyond belief, the 2 "twists' i saw coming a mile away, and a thousand other little things that bothered me. it wasn't all horrible though, the snake eyes/storm shadow fight scenes were really good but everybody else was kinda just there. I texted my friend halfway through telling him, a guy who loved the movie by the way, that I was rooting for cobra, knowing there were going to lose in the end, because I actually liked those characters better than the "joes". and don't even get me started about the "capture" at the end of the movie...i won't spoil it but seriously?? right after they change? captured?? wtf???

Surprisingly good flick. Way better than expected. Most the people ripping on the film, clearly didn't see it because they aren't ripping on the actual flaws but the flaws everyone was afraid of before seeing the movie.
Hardly perfect, but very much like the old cartoon.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, and it's strange since it had no legitimate reason to be good. The marketing campaign for it has been horrible, and if anything should be lambasted it should be that. In a year where it seems every 80's icon and iconic image has been wiped off the map, this movie felt fun and made me a bit nostalgic.
The fact is, and this is coming from someone born in '77, we need to face a cold truth about the cartoons we grew up with. As awesome as they were, anybody could poke a thousand holes in every one - if they really wanted to. G.I. Joe was no exception - 22 minutes of shooting and fighting, intertwined with toy advertisements and ending with a PSA basically produced to ensure the show could stay on television. Growing up, I loved every minute of it(and the comic), and still do, but let's not attach too much importance to the source material folks. It's non-canonical stuff, and they did a decent job of making it work, and appeared to have fun with it in the promise(see Quaid's cheese grins throughout). This was one of the better summer popcorn flicks put out this year. I still personally liked Star Trek better, but this definitely eclipsed Transformers 2.
I want the dvd too, but how awesome would it be if they had some PSA spots made up for it? An anti-dvd pirating one could be brilliant.
Oh, and to the costume haters: Most of the 80's toy clothing styles? REALLY? Is THAT what you wanted actual people to wear on screen? You would have asked for your money back. But I agree on the idea that Cobra Commander's mask was just kinda weird.

I've got no problems with the look of the outfits, he if you want to look like an x-men you knock yourself out and I'm all for women in tight outfits, but seriously do they have to be speed-altering or genetically enhancing?? what happened to good-ole fatigues?

You know, I came close to agreeing with the "justification intro" for the movie.
Then I saw it.
I didn't even mind the changes except one (G.i. Joe is a real AMERICAN hero, not a real NATO hero.... unless you want the G.I. Joe team raping women and children in the countries they are supposed to be protecting).
My problem with the movie is that it just wasn't good. It wasn't good at all.

A missed opportunity for a chuckle when they didn't invite Sgt Slaughter to cameo.

1. I agree with you in two points, Duke should have been older but did not like the actor that played him.
2. Completely agree with you on Ricord, he was white and they should be true to the character and its not racist to think so this is coming from a black woman who grew up watching G.I. Joe cartoon.
I was disapointed with the movie espacially the back story.

This movie sucked ass. Seriously. And what the hell was with the Black Eyed Peas song at the credits? Stupid.
The only thing that was cool was the chase scene through the city...and that was a rip off of Halo. Mjolnir, errrr, Accerlator Suits? Rip. Off. Come up with an original idea.

I just want to know what the President of the United States was played by a BRITISH actor? I like the person, especially in "Tomorrow Never Dies", but casting him made zero sense. He could barely contain his accent. Are we to understand that in the IN THE NEAR FUTURE immigrants can be come President?

Great review. The movie was what I thought it was going to be and more. All of you who diss this movie should go f**k yourself. I really enjoyed GI Joe and was WAY better than Transformers 2 but good as the first one. The whole cast gave great performances especially Marlon Wayans who proved himself as a belivable action star and love interest who keeping his comic relief at the same time. As usual like he did as Darth Maul Ray Park looked badass as Snake Eyes. I also thought that Rachel Nichols as Scarlett was smoking HOT!!
Posted By: JFLYNT (Guest) on August 12, 2009 at 04:08 PM
7.5? Seriously? That movie had the worst dialog I've ever heard, the acting was terrible, and the fifteen different subplots didn't help any. How can anyone have seriously liked that?
Posted By: KenB3 (Guest) on August 14, 2009 at 03:33 PM
On it's own it was good. I actually thought it was a bit Star Wars-esque with all of the intertwining plot lines.
Knowing the source material however, it was a bit frustrating. The Storm Shadow/Snake Eyes relationship was a highlight of the comic books and there was actually a sense of respect and brotherhood between the two. Storm Shadow in the movie was just a bad guy who apparently hated Snake Eyes his entire life and was far too murderous to be redeemed. That's a shame, they threw away the chance to have a plot that could have been built into a "face turn" that would have been on par with Darth Vader.
Also most of the characters were their cartoon counterparts in name alone. Why did they even choose guys like Ripcord and Heavy Duty if they weren't going to relate them to their namesakes in any way? I went to the movie to see these characters brought to life, but for the most part all of them were complete revisions with familiar code names. The movie should have been made with a greater affection for it's inspiration.
