Following Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (bubble gum fun) and Terminator: Salvation (a rescue movie), I was beginning to wonder if there was going to be an intelligent science fiction movie in theaters this year. With District 9, my prayers have been answered. The movie has, at its core, a very interesting science fiction-like premise.
28 years before the movie begins, an extraterrestrial space craft arrived in our orbit and eventually stopped, hovering over Johannesburg for no apparent reason. News crews from all over the planet showed up while military forces flew to the ship and drilled their way in where they found a hoard of aliens, malnourished and starving. Since the world was watching, the government had no choice but to offer the aliens shelter and nourish them back to health. Over the next twenty years, relations between the aliens and the human race reached critical levels. People in Johannesburg did not want the aliens (nicknamed Prawns) in their city anymore and, thanks to the living conditions the aliens were forced into, they were unable to adapt to our world either. By the time the movie starts they are living in a slum, outcasts in every sense of the word.
The movie makes a brilliant decision, setting up the back story as a hybrid with documentary mixed with live action footage. The documentary is shot using footage from news channel broadcasts, security camera footage and a video shot by the corporation called Multinational United (MNU), a private organization contracted by the government to control alien affairs. We are introduced to a low level employee of MNU named Wikus (Sharlto Copely) at the start when he receives a surprising promotion, tasked with going into District 9 and evicting the aliens. MNU has heard the cries of the human population and is determined to move the aliens out of city limits to a new shelter outside of Johannesburg called District 10. The look of District 9 and the almost concentration camp look of District 10 bears a close relation to apartheid, still a very real problem in South Africa. The underlying fear in this movie is racial segregation, shown here as alien segregation. One African man made the comment “if they were from another nation, it would be okay but they are not even from our planet.” It is sliding from one form of racism to another.
What makes this science fiction film great is the conundrum of citizens wanting the aliens off our planet while the MNU wants them to stay. The aliens, while a nuisance, arrived with many sophisticated weapons aboard their ship. The governments of the world want these advanced weapons but the weapons are only able to be utilized by the aliens. MNU is doing everything it can, by any means necessary, to find out how these weapons work and the aliens are nothing more than collateral damage along the way. Most of the aliens want to leave our planet as much as the humans want them gone but they are held down, against their will, and any attempt to leave is met with resistance.
The only character we have to relate to is Wikus, making his way into District 9 to serve the notices. He preens for the camera crew following the evictions every chance he gets until he comes across a home with a large chemistry setup and finds a vial of fluid. Some of the fluid splashes onto him and, after an accident, it ends up mixing with his blood through a cut on his arm. When he finds himself transforming into a creature similar to the aliens, he becomes a wanted man. We are told at the beginning of the movie by eye witnesses Wikus is a traitor to his own people and here we find out how this pencil pusher becomes both public enemy number one and the most valuable commodity to MNU and the world’s governments.
Wikus is played by Sharlto Copely, a non-professional actor, who is asked to mostly play off aliens with little interaction to actual humans. The main alien he ends up communicating with after the incident was christened with the human name Christopher Johnson. Christopher has been working in secret for the last twenty years, building a space craft under his house that will fly him and his young son to the mother ship where he can start it and escape the prison his race have found themselves enslaved in. The movie then becomes a race against time - Sharlto trying to change back into a normal human, Christopher wanting to return home and MNU wanting to master the advanced weaponry that fell into their laps. Using only documentary footage wouldn’t allow us to see everything so the movie occasionally switches over to live action to see what Sharlto is doing and to understand what it is Christopher is trying to accomplish. It shouldn’t work but does and creates a compelling and smart story.
There are minor problems with the script including the fact the fluid that changes Sharlto is something needed to fuel the ship. It makes no sense to me and is not explained further other than Christopher saying “there is only one thing that could do that.” Part of great science fiction is explaining these occurrences in an interesting way but here it is a McGuffin used to further the plot. It is also never explained how the aliens and humans can understand each other’s languages as clearly as they do, although it can be argued living together for twenty years should make everyone understand each other. There is also a gang of Nigerian thugs led by a man named Obesandjo who wants to eat the aliens in hopes they will gain the power to use the weapons on their own. I assume it is added to allow more violence and action to stretch out the running time. These are small, minimal problems and none stand in the way of a great film.
For the sci-fi tech hounds, there are the weapons. The guns are powerful enough to blow a person to pieces and there is also a robot an alien can enter and use in a way most comparable to the ED-209 robot from Robocop. For the technical excellence, there is a lot of bang for the buck. Director Neill Blomkamp based District 9 on his short film Alive in Joburg, a straight mockumentary about the aliens in Johannesburg. When his opportunity to direct the big screen adaptation of the videogame Halo fell through, he was given the chance to make his short into a feature length presentation and held nothing back. With Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) behind him, Blomkamp received all the help he could hope for with Jackson’s WETA studios who went above and beyond the call of duty for this movie. The smaller budget movie (rumored to be around $30 million) looks like it was shot for three times the amount thanks to the awesome creature work creating grotesque aliens that are very cool looking at the same time. The movements and action is fluid and visceral. It is some of the best technical alien work I have seen in a long time.
Finally, the best science fiction work takes real world problems and events and transposes them to the world of the story. Two decades after the “end” of apartheid, more than a million South African blacks live without basic human services. Even today, violence breaks out between groups in South Africa and this movie bears a close resemblance to the hatred still existing in that area of the world. District 9 builds on those real world problems and offers its own solutions and views while sprinkling the movie with some fantastic science fiction ideas. It speaks volumes a novice director, with a non-professional lead actor and a modest budget, produced the best science fiction film I have seen in years. Forget the bubble gum sci-fi action flicks, District 9 is set to become a classic.
The 411: Neill Blomkamp proves he is a force to be reckoned with. In District 9, he has crafted a smart, stylistic science fiction film trumping every other film in its genre to come out in the last couple of years. The alien design is solid and the weapons and machinery are cool. However, what makes this film so great is the fact it is a smart film containing real world problems, revealing something about ourselves, regardless of how dark and sobering the truth is. The best science fiction holds up a mirror to the world and allows us to see a distorted version of ourselves. It is not a perfect movie but it is fantastic science fiction.
just checked the score. 9.0 makes me happy. can't wait to see this.

Why would you pay money to sit through half a movie? I don't get people. You're not standing up for anything. They have your money. Stay til the end then voice your opinions. Retards in this world, I tell ya...

And then you RUSHED home so you could post about leaving in a movie forum. That's really badass of you. You must be really cool if not even Hollywood can appease you! Can I sleep over tomorrow?

agreed and I think most of them are full of shit, when they say they left half through the movie.

The movie was awesome.
Also, a small throwaway line in the movie explains how that fluid is able to change Wilkus. They say that all of thier technology is build bio-organically and keyed to thier DNA. For the sci-fi nerds out there, this tells you that upon entering the bloodstream, it would attach itself and since it's a fuel, and therefore a catalyst, would start the change.
For the non-sci-fi nerds out there, alien bio-gas enters bloodstream, attaches to DNA, turns man into insect.

For such a supposedly serious movie with political undertones the commericals make it look like a wacky alien comedy.
Bet it tanks.

I will admit I was pretty bored about 45 mins in...then the shit got real.
I dont think its worth a "9" maybe an "8.6". Original. Fast paced. Shit blows up. A few things that I thought just didnt make sense...but still a very enjoyable film.
But what do I know...Just go see it for yourself! :)

That really is pretty stupid. Never understood how people leave movies early at roughly $10/ticket (at least). Of course this guy maybe didn't really leave the movie early -- and maybe didn't even see it at all. Just have to seem like the "cool kid" for disagreeing with consensus opinion. That is the mark of the anonymous internet poster isn't it?

You should check out Moon when you get a chance, it's awesome. Good review though, I was on the fence about seeing this or not but I'm definately going to now.

I got to see the movie for free because my mom is an usher at the movie theatre. I liked Star Wars and Star Trek-but this one was bad.

Guest#2220 you are probably one of the idiots who couldn't "get into" a well written/directed movie, yet you loved the abortion known as G.I. Joe. Robotic fucking Tuna fish? Yo Joe, my asssssss.

' Never understood how people leave movies early at roughly $10/ticket (at least)"
Frankly I have left movies early if they suck (Last action hero comes to mind). And $10 isn't worth me sitting someplace I don't want to be for another hour or more.
It's not like $10 is alot of money...you spent it already and if the movie sucks you move on and leave.
You couldn't get me to do an hours worth of work at my job for $10 an hour (less than my current salary) so why would I submit to sitting someplace I don't want to be for the same price?
THAT is what doesn't make any sense
Posted By: Guest#5897 (Guest) on August 14, 2009 at 11:26 AM
Sweet! Going to go see it now. I wasn't sure if I wanted to see it or not but now I do!
Posted By: Joe (Guest) on August 14, 2009 at 02:20 PM
I can understand someone walking out of a movie if they absolutely hate it but they can't actually make any kind of intelligent comment about it since they don't know where the story goes or what actually happens.
I would assume a 14 year old kid whose mom works at a theater would not like the documentary feel of the first quarter to half of this movie.
As for Moon, you are right, I missed out on it and forgot completely about it. I do want to see it pretty bad.

Where I'm at movie tickets are $7.50 at night and that's a lot less than I make in an hour and yet I still go to movies. I would say that it wouldn't make sense to go to a movie if you made less in an hour than the cost of a movie ticket.

If you saw some of the commericals I was talking about then yeah. I never said it WAS one, but that it looked like one via the goofy advertisements.
They'd done better if they used Alive in Joburg scenes as the commercials.

Jay: What the fuck is the Internet?
Holden: The Internet is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to bitch about movies and share pornography with one another.

I love the film, and thought it was awesome in every way. Please note, the following did not affect my enjoyment of the movie:
I did not like the alien designs. Every scifi movie has aliens that either look like gray humanoids or insects/insectoids. There has to be a director with an original idea for what an alien might look like. It is time for a break from this two stereotypes.

watched earlier tonight & was extremely impressed. i couldn't compare it to any movie i've seen which is a good thing. i thought the creature designs & visual effects were outstanding but the best part was the depth the film had to it as well. i really hope this does well because it is worth your time & money especially if you spent hours waiting to see that transformers 2 trash.

lol at your mom working at a movie theatre.

Great movie, really enjoyed it. Refreshing to watch a sci-fi movie that does not have a cum-ba-yaa, happy clappy with models standing around giving one liners. After seeing this I just hope Spielberg does not make Halo into a family movie like ET. Blood and guts baby, that is what Halo is all about.

Meh. It was OK. It was unique and yes, it had an intelligent story. But there wasn't enough plot to fill out a film.
It was still an overblown action movie... just one that had some interesting social commentary.
I'd give it a 7.0.

So I've heard this is kind of the like old school sci-fi movies, like the original The Day the Earth Stood Still. Where there is the alien threat, but not so much action as it is more drama and questioning our beliefs and values in the present, and giving you some questions to ponder. I've got no problem with the all out action sci-fi if done right(like the new Star Trek), but I think the moral conundrum in a sci-fi has been forgotten for far too long. I love the old school thinking of the meaning sci-fi and if this movie falls more into those lines I hope to go see it while in the theaters. Thoughts on which way this movie goes are appreciated.

I'm not saying this is the greatest movie ever, yet everyone should see it. Here's why: if you can watch Transformers, you can watch District 9; and if you didn't watch Transformers, then you're highly intelligent and you SHOULD watch District 9. : )
One of the great things about this movie that hasn't been mentioned is the path of redemption that the main character takes. Biggest nerd ever to the biggest badass ever!
Posted By: Sam! (Guest) on August 17, 2009 at 12:03 AM
looks like it could be a prequel to a future halo movie.
Posted By: guest (Guest) on August 17, 2009 at 03:24 AM
One of the most intelligent sci-fi movies Ive ever seen quite frankly and the best one since the original star wars trilogy. There was a story, great plot and action and explosions, not just for the sake of them being there, but being germane to the story itself. it was an original story idea unlike every remake or rehash being done in hollywood nowadays and it was very well executed by everyone involved. wilkus turns into quite a sympathetic character in the movie and you actually care about what happens to him after a time. and****spoiler alert*** I can see either a sequel(christopher did tell him he promised to be back in 3 years to "fix him" and "free" his brother in district 10 or a prequel explaining how and why the "prawns" came to earth in the first place...I'd gladly sit through either one of those films. All in all it was a great scf-fi movie, and for me the best movie of the summer if not the entire year so far
Posted By: faceman802 (Guest) on August 17, 2009 at 04:13 PM
I snuck a batch of Prawns into the movie they were Grrrr eat!

You guys spend too much money to see a movie. Why pay $10 to see a movie when you can go to an AMC theatre and spend $5. You have to wait a week to see it for $5, but why the hell not.

Awesome, awesome movie. Allegories to issues of immigration, internment, racism, apartheid. Well written and presented. Amazing how you can have cgi and cool fight scenes while also telling a story while also getting people to think and feel.
