I'm going to start this review with a disclaimer. I’m not a big fan of current horror films. Not trying to be a slasher snob, but I grew up in a time of classic scary movies and the stuff coming out now doesn't evoke the same reaction it once did. Wait. Wait. Wait. Don't get defensive just yet. I'm not saying the modern stuff is bad, but it doesn't do it for me. I really wish I could watch a movie and have to look over my shoulder every few seconds like Poltergeist did. I miss getting sweaty palms as the suspense on screen raised like The Exorcist. I have accepted the fact that maybe, just maybe, I've seen all there is to see. I resigned myself that maybe horror films just don't have it, for me, anymore.
Then I saw Paranormal Activity.
If you haven't been paying attention, Paranormal Activity is the little horror film that could. Made on a belt-tightening budget of $14,000 - $15,000, depending in whom you ask, this indie gem has garnered a lot of hype. Hype that it richly earns and deserves. Yes, it uses the "found footage" style of film but don't compare this movie to The Blair Witch Project. You'd be doing this movie, and yourself, a disservice. It uses the documentary style as well as it has ever been used. Paranormal Activity has a limited release but YOU can make a difference and bring it to a theater near you, if you DEMAND IT! Judging from the theater I was in, you are going to want to demand it.
The movie sticks to the basics. Katie (Katie Featherson) and Micah (Micah Sloat) are a young couple who've just moved into a new house in San Diego. Katie feels that a haunting spirit have been following her since childhood, though Micah is hesitant to believe her. Several nights of odd happenings and strange noises, start to change Micah's mind. A demonologist (Michael Bayouth) helps us learn some back-story about Katie and how a dark figure used to stand at the foot of her bed. The demonologist tells them that the spirit is not a ghost, but a demonic spirit and that trying to talk to it will egg it on and that it leeches off negative energy. Micah takes the lead and sets up a several video cameras so that if a spirit manifests itself, he can capture it on tape. With the surveillance cameras in place, the couple uses an Ouija board to talk to the spirits, escalating the situation drastically. Doesn’t sound so scary, right? Wrong.
With a small cast, there is no room for error in a movie like this. As the couple, Katie and Micah, grow from being wary of the spirit intruding in their lives to fearing for their survival. The film hinges on their acting, and Featherston delivers an incredibly believable performance. Really, it's her ability to create a sense of dread and subtle cues that draws you in and makes you feel for her and the horrible nightmare she is in. Micah Sloat, as the boyfriend, provides some laughs, but he really comes on strong as a man who goes from skeptic to fighter. He does exactly what this film needs him to do, annoy us at times but support his lady. Director Oren Peli can stand tall as his first time directing shatters any preconceived notions of small budgets equal cheesy effects. Because there are none. No special effects to take us out of the movie and say, "C'mon!" Creativity is alive and well, my friends. This movie is what it sets out to be. Scary. Frightening. Gripping to the last 15-minute fright fest.
When seeing a film in the theater, the crowd you see it with can really add to the experience. Outside of comedy, nowhere is this truer than with horror. I saw this with a packed audience and believe me; we all jumped at the same times, gasped at the right moments, and looked at each other with eyes saying, “Did you just see that?” This is what great movie going moments is about! If you want to go out on a first date with a special someone...TAKE THEM TO THIS FILM! Not only will they be clutching onto your beefy, well-defined arm for comfort, they will climb on top of your shoulders, wrap their legs around your neck, and squeeze onto your head for dear life. I'm pretty sure I saw that happen in the theater I was in. The fright in this movie is direct and effective. Opening doors. Objects moving of their own. Footsteps in talcum powder. It takes instances we’ve seen before and presents them to us on the big screen in ways that it feels like the first time. I'm still surprised how much this movie pulled me in and had me jumping at moments.
If you want to see Paranormal Activity and it's not showing in your area, you have to DEMAND IT! The buzz you are hearing is real and in a twist on marketing, the good folks at Paramount want you to go online and make your voices heard. Visit the official movie website to learn how. It’s in limited release with new cities being added regularly; make sure it’s in one near you. A refreshing take on being scared and reminds us, me especially, that horror still has plenty of screams waiting to be unleashed.
The 411: Low-budget has never looked so good and been so scary. This mockumentary raises the bar and turns a simple story of a house haunting into a gripping, glance behind you; cover your head while you sleep experience. It serves as yet another example that you don't need to pay big bucks for computer-generated scares, hire egotistic actors to deliver over dramatic monologues, and yes, you should be afraid of things that go bump in the night.
Hey, saw this movie last weekend in Tempe Arizona and it was truly an amazing piece of art and a movie I will gladly add to my collection. As for this review, it was great, but a few points that were off I thought I'd mention. There was only 1 camera the entire movie, not multiple. There was however multiple microphones he set up. As for the Ouija Board, the guy brought it into the house but they never used it cus the girl was too pissed off. Doesn't mean anything didn't happen with it though ; ) and the only other thing I saw incorrect was they never got to speak to the demonologist. They spoke with a guy that studies ghosts, the demonologist was out of town, so they couldn't really figure out what to do. Other than that, great review, amazing movie, you all really should see it! I would give it a 10/10 since I could not find one single thing wrong with it. Big props to the director and actors/actresses that made this film so believable and so amazing. I wish it was still playing so I could see it again.
Once it hits your town, you get 3 opportunities to see it at midnight on thursday, friday and saturday and then it's gone! so don't miss it when it comes to your city!

Are we so deprived of decent horror movies that this movie is supposed to be a instant classic?
It's a decent premise, sparked by a unhealthy dose of fans of Ghost Hunters who BELIEVE this nonsense is real. These are the people who think this movie is scary. Those of us who know there aren't any boogie men under the bed realize a movie needs a bit more to create fear.
That said, I liked Blair Witch and it worked great for it's time. This movie is the exact same thing. Clearly copied off Blair Witch and in a year or two will be completely forgotten. Much like Blair Witch, it has no charm for multiple viewings.
Let's not oversell this flick. Just because so many horror movies suck nowdays doesn't mean this one is some savior.

I disagree with Jake G., although it's not a true story doesn't mean it's not based on true events. I just saw this movie not even an hour ago, and after the first 30 minutes to the end I had my hand on my mouth. Just so I would screem so loud. In my perspective of this movie, it's the scariest movie i've seen for far. The only way this movie is like the blair witch project is that a sigle camera was used. Just in case you didnt know, the blair witch project was taken outside and it was said it was a witch's doing not demons. So, I really don't see how their similar. I give a lot of credit to this new director with his first movie of success. I'm looking foward for his upcoming movies.

It looks interesting. Hopefully nothing like Blair Witch. That was the least scary and most annoyinmg film of all time. 3 idiots lost in the woods yelling at each other for an hour is not entertaining. But if so many believe Ghost Hunters are real just shows how stupid people can be. Again the trailer looks cool. So I will give it a shot.

How about you stop bashing people for liking other things. Not everybody can be a jackass like you

The comments in here look like children wrote them. Children and retarded people.
This movie looks fun, but its going to be so overhyped over the next couple of weeks that I'll probably not watch it, just so I can say I'm cooler than everyone else.

Whether Truth's comment is satire or not, he is right. This movie is LAME. "OMG scariest movie since The Exorcist!!", give me a fuckin' break. Certainly does not live up to the hype, this movie is awful.

Saw this movie 10/11/09 in Downtown Santa Cruz, CA at an old theater for the midnight showing. The thing was sold out and the buzz was high. Everyone had heard something about this film and had high expectations, this usually means a bunch of angry, let down moviegoers at the end but that was just not the case. as the movie starts out every one is just waiting for something scary to happen and the ghost to pop out and chase Katie around there cookie cutter San Diego home but you get drawn in by Micah and katies relationship and you kind of care. Then you get your first dose of an image that will no doubt stick in you head and remind you that there are things you are scared of, a still night vision shot of two people in bed, sleeping in a dark room. The couple start to experience strange things that really scare Katie and seem to amuse the some what Douche-baggy Micah doors moving loud noises and then progressivly more disturbing things that are sure to un nerve the post skeptikle horror fan. The use of tension and the fact the film uses your own imagination to taylor fit the scariest image you can conjour up make the low budget movie not just make you shift in your seat but make you grip that thing like its really going to save you. From there the tension gets even worse as evertime that damn night scene shows up with that evil time stamp you tighten up and sweat it out. The movie never breaks from its mission to use less to scare the crap out of you and the couple sitting next to you. My buddy and I left the movie talking about how scary it really was and what we would have done had it been us and so was everyone else. I not a huge wuss or anything but I didnt sleep a wink that night I watched ESPN with all the lights in my house on. Every little normal noise I hear everynight was surley a demon stalker and I coudnt get that bedroom image out of my head. Overall this was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, I recommend you see it and tell your friends, as its best viewed with your buddies or your girl at the latest showing they have.

I just saw it tonight...I demanded it to come to KC and I have been waiting for WEEKS on end!! It does NOT disappoint...it brings you into this sincere relationship with this young couple and makes your jaw drop and your heart beat like crazy...it was SOOOO terrifying!! There has never been a time when i saw a scary movie in the theatre, the film ended and went to black....and the ENTIRE theatre was dead silent and not moving for like 20 seconds....it was INTENSE

Horror is hopefully not dead, check out the French wave of horror films like Haute Tension, Frontier(s), or Martyrs. But another Mockumentary? Jesus! Enough already with this tired, contrived genre.

Jake G, paranormal activity, not the movie, is really happening all around us. but this is not what this review is about. i know tons who dont believe in this, and got scared shitless from this movie. i firmly believe, and yes i was scared out of my mind. Steve, GREAT review. Your one of my faves.

Just saw this movie, and I'm not sure if it was that my expectations were too high, but I left wondering where this 'Instant Classic' was. At no point were me or any of my friends entertained, and at one point, we considered leaving halfway through. The second half was better obviously, but in my opinion the movie was less than average, at best. There was nothing scary about any of that movie.

I caught this last night. HOLY SHIT!

I saw it last night. On Fandango, they said it was just a 9:50 show, but when I got there, it was so packed they had to expand it out to 3 theatres at the same time. And it was totally worth it. Awesome movie.

Too bad, not really scary. Here is the movie - couple buys camera, hear sounds at night, couple argues, things move at night, couple argues, predictable ending. Yawn yawn, bore bore.

yo no knock to your review but this movie sucked ass...the beginning parts where boring at best and towards the end it just leaned towards to ridiculous. Different strokes for different folks, this movie was not for me and my friends...the loud bangs and boom sounds...we hear alot worse in Harlem and thats true to life...

Ok, I saw the movie at noon yesterday and was not scared. I really couldn't see how people were screaming. Then, it got dark and was time for bed. Holy shit was I freaked. Every little noise and perceived noise scared the shit out of me. I'm putting powder on the floor as we speak...

I just don't get it I guess. Saw it and didn't like it whatsoever. I laughed more than anything.

Great movie that had me totally forgetting it wasn't actually real. The end was the only part that made me go "Shit, that would just never happen" and by that I mean the very end with... well the face and the camera. It got a lot of people screaming in the theatre, but everything was Grade-A, top notch horror/thriller/suspense. I shuddered towards the end when Katie smiled. I don't want to ruin it, but if you've seen it you know what I mean.
I'm a HUGE fan or story over gorey, so this was perfection to me. Maybe not a 10/10 perfect score, but I couldn't really have asked for anything more from this movie. Micah was really funny, and really, just did what any boyfriend would've done. He was funny when he needed to be ("It feeds on negative energy" "Well I guess we should've invite your mother over"), a douchebag when he needed to be ("Great, go ahead upstairs with your friend"), and downright caring and passionate when he needed to be (After all the times he got the camera first, the times where he completely forgot about the camera and ran, without hesitation to Katie, who was in trouble. Or when he just drops the camera and holds her close after them fighting)
Whether this movie had imperfections or not (And every movie has them), this movie did everything right for me. Now all I've got to do is find the courage to go see it again...

This movie was a huge waste of time and money. Nothing seemed at all scary. It felt like a movie I could've made myself, and I still would've hated it even if I had.

Wendy and I hated this movie.

this movie sucked hairy dog balls. Hell I can't believe I wasted 80+ minutes of my time...
Posted By: the bad ghost (Guest) on November 01, 2009 at 01:31 AM
Oh yeah the cloverfield monster was scarier then this bastard of a movie...
Posted By: the bad ghost (Guest) on November 01, 2009 at 01:33 AM
95 minutes of my life that I can't get back...I'm not saying that it had to be a gorefest to be entertaining or scary, but this one was all smoke and mirrors with little to no substance. Again, I'm not saying that a horror movie has to be Citizen Kane, but to me, this was just another in a long line of PG-13 horror yawnfests where something goes bump really loud after an extended period of silence to "scare" people into jumping out of their seats.
As for the alternate endings, I hope that they're better than the one that I saw, cause that one was something I saw coming about a mile away and wasn't remotely scary in the least.
After all of the talk about this being the first in a new generation of horror films, I left extremely disappointed and sad because I know that next year there will be ten movies just like this one that are all just as bad...

Wow I KNEW this movie was overblown! A sheet blowing and footprints on a floor qualify as the scariest thing since the exorcist? What has this country come to when this is scary! I miss REAL scary movies! This movie SUCKED!

Wow. I just watched this movie last night, after my g/f told me how scaaaary it was. I was not impressed. This was Blair Witch project all over again. With a stupid ending, that doesnt finish the movie. Next time someone makes a ghost movie, please at least make it scary or even creepy, and please for gods sake, dont make it predictable. This movie was so predictable I was calling out what was going to happen before it did. LAME.

Saw the movie tonight it was dull and predictable. I hated the main characters from the get go and couldn't wait for them to be slaughtered.
