Kevin Smith goes out of his comfort zone to try something different. Does it work? Jeffrey Harris checks in with his full review of Cop Out.
Directed By: Kevin Smith Written By: Robb and Mark Cullen Runtime: 107 minutes MPAA Rating: Rated R for pervasive language including sexual references, violence and brief sexuality.
Jimmy Monroe - Bruce Willis Paul Hodges - Tracy Morgan Hunsaker - Kevin Pollak Dave - Seann William Scott Barry Mangold - Adam Brody Poh Boy - Guillermo Díaz Juan - Julio Fernandez Ava Monroe - Michelle Trachtenberg Roy - Jason Lee Pam - Francie Swift Debbie - Rashida Jones Captain Romans - Sean Cullen
I'm hesitant to tell you about Cop Out. The reason doing so is for years I've wanted to see writer/director Kevin Smith try and branch out and go outside of his comfort zone with his typical indy-pop work. And Cop Out is very much uncharted territory for Smith. It's a movie with more action than anything he's ever done. It's also the first time Smith has directed from a script that wasn't his own, being that even Smith admits that his strength lies as a writer. For years Smith avoided doing more action-type movies like say Green Hornet because he was not confident that he could handle the action sequences a movie of that nature would require and he would simply have Green Hornet and Kato standing next to their car, walk offstage, beat a bunch of guys up, walk back to their car and talk about doing a woman in the rear. And the reason I'm hesitant to talk about Cop Out, Smith's new action comedy is because well . . . it's pretty bad.
What I do appreciate about Cop Out is the intent of making a throwback of the classic cop action comedy movies of the 1980's like Beverly Hills Cop. I appreciate Smith actually trying something different from his usual fare. I even appreciate throwing in a funky, 80's synthesizer, keyboard score from composer Harold Faltermeyer (Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun), dusted off and removed from the shelves. The problem is that Tracy Morgan is no young and in his prime, Eddie Murphy. And Bruce Willis is how he usually is in these types of comedies, not really funny.
Cop Out at the end of the day is really the dumber, poor man's American and less funny version of Hot Fuzz. Much like Hot Fuzz did, you have a cop action-comedy riffing the types of shots and conventions usually seen in these types of movies. In some instances it yearns a decent chuckle. However, when the story introduces Brooklyn narcotics officers Paul (Morgan) and Jimmy (Willis) interrogating a suspect by having Paul lifting random lines from movies and TV shows and saying it in his funny voice, while Jimmy watches from behind the one way mirror and names the movie Paul is "homaging," I'm at a loss to realize why this is supposed to be funny. Of course they go for the cheap and easy gag of Paul saying, "Yippie ki yay motherfucker," while Jimmy barely deadpans he never saw that movie. Is this really supposed to be funny? It's not really. I think we are supposed to find Morgan's manic and exaggerated body language and drool while he's yelling and spouting random lines that apparently scare the suspect into confession funny, but it just looks ridiculous and not in a good way. Why is Paul shouting "KING KONG AIN'T GOT NOTHING ON ME?" The whole scene only serves in putting you off from Tracy Morgan's Paul from the very beginning.
I'm sorry but Tracy Morgan sucks and still isn't funny. I could barely tolerate Morgan back in the SNL days. I don't really watch 30 Rock, so I could be missing something here. But the extent of Morgan's schtick seems to be that he's black and says stuff in a funny voice so we should find him funny. There's no substance, or the only hint of which is that Paul is incredibly paranoid that his loving wife, Debbie (Jones), is cheating on him with their next door neighbor while he isn't around. Unfortunately, there's absolutely no chemistry or believability at all in the relationship between Debbie and Paul. Never once does Smith really sell that this is a really happily married couple. Paul comes off more like Debbie's roommate or crass, eccentric cousin or sibling. Smith obviously did not study this genre enough like Edgar Wright since Freebie and The Bean basically had the template for that subplot right there.
The other major issue is the plot. The catalyst of the plot is that Jimmy and Paul are supsended because they screwed up a sting against a local drug dealer. Jimmy and Paul are both suspended, and Jimmy now does not have a source of income to pay for the expensive dream wedding his daughter Ava (Trachtenberg) wants. Not doing so would mean Jimmy's humiliation at the hands of his ex-wife's new husband, Roy (Smith staple, Lee), who would pay for the wedding instead. So Jimmy plans on selling a rare, mint rookie baseball card which is stolen by a crazy thug, Dave (Scott). And Dave sells it to a drug dealer, Poh Boy (Díaz), who also happens to be the mastermind behind the drug dealing from earlier. Poh Boy is a collector of baseball swag you see. Yes sometimes movies have overly-convenient coincidences, but c'mon . . . are you kidding me? The writers make way too many reaches for the plot. The drug dealing bad guys certainly aren't menacing.
Seann William Scott who can be hit or miss is unfortunately like nails on a chalk board with his parkour loving, oddball thief. Smith does a lot of set-up for schtick in certain scenes but the payoff is ultimately lacking. Not to pile on too much, the action sequences such as the obligatory car chase and the big shoot out aren't that bad. They are actually quite decent. It's really the comedy that falls flat on it's face surprisingly.
The 411: Smith gets points for effort in trying something different, but the execution is lacking and waning in Cop Out. The movie more comes off more like 2005's The Man than a fun take/riff on the genre like Hot Fuzz. Smith seemed to be aware of how low interest was in this movie since he had to get on Twitter and his Smodcast to make a big stink about being too fat to fly on Southwest Airlines to get people to talk about him again. All it took was whining about getting kicked off a plane for being too obese to become a major news story everywhere right before his movie came out. Not a bad marketing trick I suppose.
"I'm sorry but Tracy Morgan sucks and still isn't funny. I don't really watch 30 Rock"
You should apologize. It's criminal that you're such a poor judge of comedy.

Either I'm reading a review from someone with no sense of humor and takes everything to serious or the parts from commercials weren't in the movie

IF you hate Kevin Smith you shouldn't be reviewing this movie. This is nothing more than a 3rd rate review by a hater.
Posted By: Snootchie (Guest) on February 27, 2010 at 12:44 AM
I knew this would fail after watching the trailer in theatre.
Posted By: Guest#5876 (Guest) on February 27, 2010 at 12:45 AM
Wow. You really are a terrible reviewer. Thanks for ruining large plot points ahead of time.
Posted By: Guest#0210 (Guest) on February 27, 2010 at 12:46 AM
I have to say, sir, that I respectfully disagree. It wasn't earth shatteringly amazing, but I got a pretty good kick out of the whole flick.
And it wasn't just me--the other folks in the theater seemed to dig it just as much as I did.

I know this is primarily a wrestling website, so everyone is automatically in "OMG THIS IS A WORK" mode, but Kevin Smith got kicked off of Southwest to promote his movie? Really? So either Southwest was somehow inexplicably in on it, or Kevin Smith booked himself on random Southwest flights hoping somebody would kick him off so that his fans would have the off-chance of making a big deal about his ensuing Twitter comments? I haven't seen the movie and really don't care, but if you think the whole "too fat to fly" shit was a work of any kind than you're more of a mark than you give yourself credit for.
Posted By: Guest#6302 (Guest) on February 27, 2010 at 02:22 AM
No, really. Tracy Morgan ain't funny, and hasn't been since Hustle Man. 30 Rock is overrated and only gets praised because Alec Baldwin carries the hell out of that show.

Tracy Morgan is NOT Funny.
My chihuahua is more funny than him when he barks and that says it all IMO

this guy might be the worst reviewer youll have cop out is a very funny movie and tracy morgan plays his role to a T,also EVERYONE in the theater was laughin through the entire interrogation scene sorry bro u either need to lighten up or get a better taste of funny
Posted By: scott (Guest) on February 27, 2010 at 03:55 AM
I saw a preview with the random line interigation and I thought it was pretty funny but I enjoy breaking of the 4th wall. I was just wondering if considering the earlier premise was funny if I would enjoy the movie? Also almost every movie, great or terrible, has some sort of convenient plot device so its shouldn't be overly depermental to an overall movie story.

"I'm sorry but Tracy Morgan sucks and still isn't funny. I don't really watch 30 Rock"
Let me guess, you're 'brand' of comedy is more akin to Scary Movie 4 or Meet the Spartans right?
Posted By: /b/ (Guest) on February 27, 2010 at 06:08 AM
Yeah, this may suck, but the fact you don't watch 30 Rock means you're a lesser human being whose opinion is of less worth to society than a retarded cockroach's.

Wow not only does this guy have no since of humor, he just seems to hate EVERYONE involved in the movie.

I agree with Guest 6302. There is NO way the SWA bullshit could be a work. What company would want to put their name out there for that kind of negative publicity? Get a clue on how business works outside of flipping burgers.
As for your clearly biased review. The concept of reviewing a movie is prefaced on reviewing it from a neutral point of view. Was the movie the funniest I've seen all year? Nope. Did it entertain me for about 2 hours? Yep, sure did, and that is what I wanted out of it. It was made to be over the top. This was the first thing I had seen Tracy Morgan in that I didn't want to punch him in the face the whole time (just part of it!), so that was a plus.
End rant.
Posted By: Swarley (Guest) on February 27, 2010 at 09:40 AM
Instead of a kneejerk screamfest response, I will say this. Jeff- go watch 30 Rock. A point should be made that a film shouldn't really require you to see a character from a show that isn't something the movie is based on, but Tracy Morgan's character in Cop Out is very much based in that. Morgan either plays the character very well or he really is what the character is as well; bat-shit insane. Certifiably bat-shit insane. While I can accept a criticism of Morgan being a one trick pony, just calling it unfunny is also inaccurate in a broad sense. Every person has their own sense of humor and his brand of comedy may not be for everyone, but broadly, considering the popularity of 30 Rock (well deserved in my opinion) he has to be considered funny. By connection, so is this character.
As far as 30 rock being carried by Alec Baldwin, again, I disagree. Baldwin certainly carried season 2 and some of season 3, but as it is now, each main character (5 in total) can carry an episode on their own without much appearance by Baldwin. Toss in the fantastic small runs like Julian Moore's, and the show is standing on its own feet quite well. However long that will last is remaining to be seen.

the fact that you have a chihuahua says it all. Those dogs suck.
go watch a Tyler Perry movie, doucher.
As for the review, why even watch and review a movie that you know you won't like? You obviously hate Smith, Morgan and Willis(at least in comedies), so what's the point?
I won't go watch a Tyler Perry movie and review it because I don't like his brand of comedy and the actors that seem to migrate to his movies. Why would I waste my time?

this man has no credibility as a movie reviewer. He gave that piece of shit travolta movie a 9. And anothe rthing that annoyed me was your comment about Smith purposely posting the southwest airlines thing on twitter to drum up publicity for the movie. I call BS, Smith is one of the most followed people on twitter and most active, you have no idea what the hell you're talking about and you come off as a pretentious ass. Is it a coincidence the incident happened right near his move release? Yes, but that's all it is a coincidence. Smith didn't get on the plane thinking "hmm, if i get kicked off it might make the news and get the movie some publicity".

basically if you don't like the actors doing their thing, you will not like them doing their thing.
I love Tracy Morgan's antics and am a fan of Bruce Willis' action work so from this review I think I'll like the movie.

I'm siding with Mr. Harris on this. The trailers for this movie were awful.
For me, my opinion, if you take the parts that made up the whole (cast, director, story), those are all things I like. But sometimes when you put them all together, it doesn't gel. This was one of those times. It doesn't mean I now hate Willis, Morgan, or Smith. It just wasn't a movie that worked for me.
Oh, and fly Southwest!

I generally tend to defend reviewers here, but good grief dude, at least give me a reason to defend you. That was a terrible review, and I couldn't take seriously even if you happen to be right, which seems pretty sketchy from the look of it. Anyway, your "review" was nothing more than an angry, out-of-focus rant, and you really did come off as a hater. So sorry, I can't really defend ya, bub.
Oh, wait. Here something that might be positive about your review, in some twisted way, I guess. It does take some stones to not even pretend you're not almost completely biased against the thing you're reviewing. Even more to not even act like it's a review!
Posted By: Galaxy Express (Guest) on February 28, 2010 at 01:43 AM
First of all, Kevin Smith didn't even write this movie so it's not any more a Kevin Smith Movie as Insomnia is a Christopher Nolan Movie.
Secondly, spoiling the movie and flagrant typos do not a good reviewer make.
Thirdly, Tracy Morgan is always funny. Then again, I've never seen 30 Rock, so maybe I'm not the best person to judge whether or not he's consistently funny in the things he's doing nowadays. But at least I'm willing to admit that, unlike you.
Good day sir, I said good day.

Wow, I'm a little stunned by all the "u r terrible reviewre" comments. Your review is fine, and I appreciate it. And no, guys, he does NOT have to be unbiased. I would hate to read a review by a guy who didn't interject his own opinions and tastes, even if I didn't agree with him. It would be boring.
It reminds me of Roger Ebert, the greatest and most respected American movie critic. I love his work and go to him all the time to find out if I'd like a movie. And sometimes he would give movies 1 or zero stars that I absolutely loved.. and that's perfectly okay.
Ebert also gave Cop Out 1.5 stars, and after reading both of your good reviews, I'm still convinced I'll end up liking it when I go see it.

I guess someone sat Kevin Smith down, probably his publicist, and told him that in order to promote this movie he was going to have to put on some extra weight, get kicked off a Southwest fligh, and then raise hell about it.
That makes a lot of f'n sense, doesn't it?
I didn't mind at all that you didn't like the movie. I'm not gonna rag on anybody for an opinion, as much as I might disagree with it. Just stick to the facts next time you write a review, you moron.

It sounds like this particular review is somewhat GENEROUS.
I'll probably still see and enjoy the movie, but the rest of you need to get over yourselves. Movie reviews are the reviewer's OPINION. Just like most of your opinions seem to be that incest is OK as long as the family member is the same sex as you.

If that were to happen the Green Hornet would be an instant classic. And I dont think I am going to like that movie now because I want this to happen

For any particular reason not sure how movie reviews are spread out for the reviewers on this site. Could be luck of the draw and the man just didn't like the actors nor the director. IT is what it is. IT can be hard to write without bias on a subject or subjects you just don't like. So thats why you gotta remember its just opinion alot of us see movies cause we want to see it no matter what the opinion of a reviewer is, so hell he didn't do a good job with this review. Its his opinion biased or not. You will not get him to change it good luck trying though.
And the movie in my opinion was funnier than I thought but I went in with no expectations of it being funny beyond Willis' usual one liners/sarcasm that I always like to see in his movies.

I think with this movie it comes down to whether or not you like Morgan. I will admit i usually can't stand him, but still I think you were way off when it came to the humor in this movie. I truly felt this movies was better then expected and i laughed from start to finish. Also, sean william scott was hilarious in this movie I have no idea what you are talking about.
