The American Review

George Clooney returns to the big screen in The American! How does it hold up in a busy summer of films? Check out the review for the full details!
It’s taken me quite some time, but I have finally come around on George Clooney. I can say with conviction that I’m a fan of his work and enjoy watching his movies. That wasn’t always the case, though. I used to view Clooney as a guy who was simply another piece of an ensemble cast. I just never really saw him carry a movie on his own. He would surround himself with great actors to make himself look good. Hollywood, meanwhile, was shoving him down our throats as the next big movie star. After Up in the Air and now The American, I’m a George Clooney fan. In The American, he has to carry a good portion of the film all by himself. He’s up to the task, thankfully.
The American follows Jack (George Clooney), a silent assassin who keeps to himself and whose preparation is second to none. He leaves nothing to chance. In Jack’s eyes, it’s better to be safe than sorry. He would rather kill an innocent person than take the chance that they might kill him first. While in Sweden, things get a little messy, which leads Jack to tell his boss that his next job will be his last. His boss tells him that his next job will be an easy one because he won’t have to kill anyone. He just has to make a drop off and he’s free to enter retirement. I’m not exactly sure what kind of retirement plan they have for assassins. I don’t believe they have any kind of benefits or a pension.
Jack’s final job will be in Italy, where he hopes to get a little rest and relaxation as well. That’s easier said than done, though, because he’s always on edge and unable to relax. The very thing that makes him so effective is also his downfall. He is haunted by nightmares, has trouble sleeping, and sometimes will wake up after hearing a loud noise with a gun in his hand. Trust is not something that comes easy for Jack. He’s always questioning people’s motives and their true intentions. When he meets the local priest (Paolo Bonacelli), he wants nothing to do with him. The priest is under the impression that he’s a photographer in town, but he also senses that there is something more beneath the surface with Jack. A local prostitute (Violante Placido) also becomes quite cozy with Jack as well. The more Jack tries to resist human interaction, the harder it becomes for him.
If you have seen the trailer for The American, you probably think it’s an action picture with a lot of big action scenes. Well, you couldn’t be further from the truth. The first hour of the film is deliberately paced and takes its time with lots of scenery shots and quiet moments of introspection. That said, I can’t say I was ever bored while watching this film. It kept my interest throughout, thanks to a restrained and thoughtful performance by George Clooney. He takes away everything that we have come to expect from George Clooney and makes this a standalone character. This is a really difficult performance to pull off because he’s all by himself for a good chunk of the movie. He uses his eyes and his face to properly portray his emotions. It’s George Clooney’s best and most complete performance to date.
Anton Corbijn really puts you in the shoes of the main character. You feel his uneasiness and uncertainty throughout the first hour of the film. Even though I have never been an assassin and don’t plan on becoming one in the future, I now know what it feels like. The money might be good, but you can’t live any type of normal life. You and everyone that you care about is a target at all times. Jack can never really enjoy anything in his life. Even when he’s having sex, it seems like his mind is elsewhere. The hooker even asks, ‘What’s wrong? It seems like something is bothering you.’ There is never a moment’s peace for Jack. Jack does attempt to create some happiness, though, but the more he exposes himself, the greater the danger. It’s a tough life to live, but it’s what Jack signed up for when he became an assassin.
Al Pacino has often said that you need to give a great movie time to breathe after it’s all said and done. I couldn’t agree with him more. The American is the type of the movie that stays with you and haunts you long after the credits roll. It sticks in your brain. So many action movies are just mindless noise that go in and out of your head without leaving any sort of lasting memories. The American is more of a character study and an examination of a certain kind of lifestyle. It’s not glamorous, but it is accurate in its portrayal. I have to give props to Clooney for taking this role. It’s very unconventional. That’s what makes Clooney such a good actor, though. He’s always looking to try something new. He doesn't settle.
The American is not for everybody and it’s probably not going to satisfy your average moviegoer. As I’ve talked about in this review, it does take a while to get to where it wants to go, and I fear that maybe certain audiences might lose their patience with it. In the end, it’s emotionally rewarding and thoughtful. It’s also quietly entertaining. In a summer filled with explosions and crazy action, it’s nice to sit back and let a movie unfold before your very eyes and take its time. This is a thinking man’s movie that will generate a lot of questions for you. It doesn’t give you all of the answers or paint the picture for you. They leave that up to you.
The 411: The American is a well-oiled machine that features George Clooney’s best performance. They put a lot of thought behind this film, and the beauty is in the unknown. I truly believe that Clooney deserves an Oscar nomination for his work in this film. He does so many of the little things right. Every decision is carefully planned and well-thought out by Clooney. The final showdown is full of twists and turns that will you have nudging the person next to you and asking, "What just happened?" Nothing is like it seems in The American.
This critique is WAY off. The movie was hands-down the WORST movie I've ever seen. A man next to me fell asleep - snoring - and the audience of 100+ collectively booed when the movie was (finally) over. Absolutely a disaster...

Will someone please tell George Clooney that this is 2010?
Posted By: Propagandhi (Guest) on September 04, 2010 at 08:01 AM
A whole movie's worth of detailed character study and George's detailed busywork leads up to an ending that is cliched and unsatisfying. I wish he'd ended the movie with another bad guy to take out.

I agree with Kim, one of the worst movies ever. God awful boring. Forget the money, I want my two hours back.

I agree with Kim. I was expecting something action packed and what I got was George working out and walking around. It was boring!!!

Worst movie ever. Slow as molasses. The review talks about it as if it is something to savor. It is not. It's slow, laborious, tedious and unrewarding. To boot, George Clooney's character isn't even likable! You don't care if he lives or dies or if he finds peace from the world he knows. You just pray for deliverance from the movie and you kick yourself that you let yourself watch the whole thing just to have a cliche ending. Lots of hype/zero pay off.

Introspective indeed. If u want an action flick w/Clooney, Siriana is a must. On the other hand if u don't mind old flicks rent the original version of The Jackal. It's based on a true story and is full of action. And yes this is not the worst movie I've ever seen.

I'm still trying to make sense out of a non-sense movie. It's the worst movie I've seen in a long time.
Posted By: wayne (Guest) on September 04, 2010 at 06:31 PM
This movie lacked substance!! It was by far the worst George Clooney movie I have ever watched!
Posted By: Guest#3125 (Guest) on September 04, 2010 at 08:13 PM
What were you smoking when you watched this? The most banal movie and an insult to the audience. George Clooney is the ultimate egotist for thinking we'd be entertained by this.

I love George Clooney, but I cannot believe that he read the script, and decided to do the movie. It was the most boring, measningless, nondescript piece of work I have ever seen. Several people walked out in the middle, but my boyfriend and I stuck it out hoping it would get better and make sense. Unfortunately, it only got worse.

Terrible movie! The previews were completely misleading! I was begging for someone to please shoot George Clooney so this movie would end.

A very bad, boring movie. My husband gave blood several months ago and received 2 free movie tickets. We waited to go out for a "date night", wow did we pick the wrong movie !!! My husband wants his blood back.

Just saw this movie in a packed theatre. When it ended someone shouted "is that it?" And everyone laughed. I'm all for slow parts to get us acquainted with the characters like "heat" but this was terrible. All I heard as we all left were criticisms from the crowd. Horrible movie.

absolute waste of my time and money .the movie sucked.
Posted By: eric harvitt (Guest) on September 04, 2010 at 10:39 PM
No, no no. this was not clooney's worst film, maybe second worst. I was totally clueless as to what had happened at the end of the movie. A woman in the restroom had to tell me the gun blew up in the final scenes. While my husband and I thought it was too slow and lacking in plot, it was better than Men who Stare at Goats. That movie was considerably worse.

I loved it.

Score 7.5? out of what? 100 points?
Movie $20, Snacks $15, Nanny $50...
Waste 2 hours ... Priceless

The movie was so bad that I walked out!
Posted By: Guest#3591 (Guest) on September 05, 2010 at 12:52 AM
Absolutely horrible movie. Slow, camera work is sloppy - and the nude scenes seem to be placed only to keep interest. A 7.5 is extremely misleading. This is easily one of the worst 2 movies I have seen.
Posted By: RR (Guest) on September 05, 2010 at 12:52 AM
7.5? Are you kidding. Give it 1.5 and that's being nice. Wasted two hours for nothing.
Posted By: Harry (Guest) on September 05, 2010 at 02:12 AM
I actually liked this movie. I wanted to leave at first but then I started thinking too much about what's going to happen so I stayed. And it was calm and slow but that was the point. It makes you think about what's happening. Everybody hates the movie because they the beginning is so boring and puts you in a bad mood for the rest of the film. Thus no one even tried to enjoy it.

I MISTYPED THE WORD "MEANINGLESS" IN MY COMMENT. Please correct it. Thank you. Dorris Beck

Indie movie producer myself & can tell you that this is the worst film made EVER.What a waste of Clooney.

It wasnt Manos: The Hands of Fate bad, but this along with Men Who Stare at Goats has me questioning Mr. Clooney's choices lately.

you must not of seen the same movie i just got out of. I went to see this but walked out bored and dissatisfied with the anticlimatic ending. It was good because it was a different movie, but that's it. I immediatly went to see Machete afterwards and left that movie pissed off that i wasted 8 dollars on clooney

This is George Clooney's "Rio Lobo". Even the Duke made a bad one. Seven groups left during the movie and the remaining audience let out a groan at the end. Maybe they can make a sequel and develop some characters.
Posted By: guest (Guest) on September 06, 2010 at 02:01 AM
If the reviewer says it's good, it's good. His opinion is worth more than you commenters'.

I am not a movie critic, as there are very few movies in which I don't truly find something to enjoy. This movie is one of them. Perhaps I should blame it on the trailers & marketing of the film. It is believed that you're about to see a Bourne/Bond spy action suspense thriller. Nonsense. This movie literally has less than 10 minutes of excitement, a third of which is the opening scene.
Perhaps it attempts to borrow some elements of development involving scenic landscapes and architecture, like In Bruges, but this film fails at delivering anything but the most obvious turns in plot.
On a 1-10 scale, this movie is at best a 1.5. I have still yet to talk to someone who actually enjoyed this one. The movie "critics" may like it, but everyone else should pass.
In short, if you liked "In Bruges" like I did, you still probably won't like The American. If you didn't like "In Bruges," you'll hate this one.
Posted By: Guest#7651 (Guest) on September 06, 2010 at 05:40 PM
Don't compare "In Bruges" to this turd. And I hate Colin Farrell, but that movie was The Balls.

Probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Awful. What was Clooney thinking? Probably: How did I get stuck in this crappy movie? Save your money.
Posted By: WTB (Guest) on September 09, 2010 at 12:58 PM
This movie was a waste of time, money, and George Clooney. I never did figure out what was going on or why. The trailers are totally misleading because there is no "thrilling suspense" or even a valid plot.Critics must all be in cahoots on this one!
Posted By: guest (Guest) on September 09, 2010 at 10:26 PM
I went to sleep the first 20 minutes. Bad Bad Bad ! I was very disappointed, especially the ending. Would have been cool if he lived. It's a shame, could have been a good movie. The only action in the movie was all shown in the trailer.

Incredibly disappointing movie. The dialogue was dull, the script was terrible, and the editing was horrendous. I can't believe critics are giving the directors credit for pacing. There was little to no sense or reason to half of the shots in the movie. The best part of the experience was laughing about it in the car on the way home.
Aside from a little token full frontal nudity for the men in the audience and the mockery in the car on the way home - pretty much no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Worst film I've seen in a theatre since "Mission to Mars".

I think Clooney needs to pull a Tom Cruise in Collateral and play some salt and pepper haired psychopath. Might do his career some good.

JUST CRAP...
Posted By: ANTHONY (Guest) on September 29, 2010 at 06:12 AM
This movie was horrible....I saw the preview and thought "This looks like a decent movie"...got to the theatre and bam, reality struck me in the face. The movie was very slow paced and the only action was when George was with that woman...too bad he doesnt have "young man energy" because even that scene sucked. This movie does not even deserve and "R" rating, because it was just plain stupid...it was so stupid in fact they let my brothers and i in the theatre without checking our ID's...I assume it's because the employees knew the movie was a waste of time...as a matter of fact, i think George Clooney should retire and stop making crap like "The American"...Case Closed

This movie was terrible. It was such a dissapointment. There was no plot what so ever and everything that happened was confusing. What a waste of time and film. What kind of assassin do you call him? The three kills he made were questionable, retarded, and without explanation. Instead of an assassin, he is just a useless individual filled with boredom. This movie contained so much stupidity that I found barney to be more interesting. This is suppose to Hollywood within a new millinium....not the western channel in black and white.
P.S.: Clooney, your chick was old and smelly

Very, very, disappointing, immoral film. I actually liked the plot but not the story line with Clooney's prostitutes.
Posted By: guest (Guest) on October 30, 2010 at 01:50 PM
i had hopes that this movie might actually go somewhere after the lake cottage scenes & the meeting at the cafe with the shot-caller fella, but the moment i seen his return to the sleepy town phone booth, an overly-impatient *sigh* found it's way out and i looked to my wife - in the theater - and audibly asked "what the f*ck is this sh!t?!"... which was snickered at by a few others in the building. about 60 minutes into it, while i was in the restroom, i texted my wife that i couldn't drag my frustrated self back into the theater & to come meet me in the lobby so we could go. lol (''.)
