Agent 91 - Terry Crews

The new Get Smart movie is now in theatres, the latest flick from Hollywood to adapt a classic TV series as a big budget, live action romp. The original series created by Buck Henry and comedy legend, Mel Brooks, was a spy comedy featuring the antics of Maxwell Smart. Smart is an agent of the organization CONTROL which is set against the villainous organization known as KAOS. The late, great Don Adams starred as the bumbling agent of good, Max Smart, before he would later play another much-loved bumbling spy character in animation, that of Inspector Gadget, which would later be re-imagined as a God awful live action movie in 1999 starring Matthew Broderick as the titular character.

Get Smart was revived over the years with TV movies in 1980's, but most terribly with the new short-lived series on Fox in 1995. This new Get Smart show featured the now older Max (Adams again) and his wife, Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), along with their grown-up, chip off the old block son, Zach (Andy Dick). The series didn't last more than 7 episodes or so.

The new big budget live action movie goes for a faithful re-version of the original series, this time with Steve Carrell as Maxwell Smart. Max labors as an expert analyst for CONTROL, while he desires to be a top field agent, despite his general klutziness. The Chief (Arkin) respects Max's work ethic and skills, but believes he belongs behind a desk as an analyst. Things change after KAOS, who has been proliferating nukes and radioactive material to sell to dictators, attacks CONTROL and starts taking out their undercover agents. The Chief decides to partner Max with the lovely Agent 99 in order to get to the bottom of KAOS's plot and stop them.

Despite the drawbacks, the movie does try really hard to live up to the original, as well as incorporating the original's catchy theme music into the film score. Many old TV shows to modern live action flicks have been rather off from their original sources in terms of themes, spirit, and tone. The new Get Smart diverts from this pathway and does its best to emulate the classic TV series, albeit not all successfully. In interviews, Anne Hathaway talks about how they've tried to make the action look like The Bourne Identity where it comes off more like the Rush Hour movies. The new Get Smart probably could've sprung to be a bit more like Austin Powers. The action sequences and set pieces though on their own are very impressive, and director Peter Segal proves he can put together some strong action scenes which he will need to do if he ever ends up doing the long in development SHAZAM (You know, the DC Captain Marvel?) movie.

Carell does his best to mimic Adams schtick, and he does an OK job of it. It helps that Carell as a performer already carried himself in a similar manner to Adams as well as being a close physical match. What didn't quite work with Steve Carell's characterization as Max was Carell going from being super-competent to super-incompetent. It just seems rather impossible that Max can be so good with fire arms and hand to hand combat, as well as safely burying a nuclear power plant, when he can't even get himself out of plastic handcuffs without blowing a dozen small, sharp arrows into his body. Ultimately, the movie misses the character much the same way Steve Martin's new Pink Panther movie missed Inspector Clouseau. Smart would mostly save the day from dumb, bungling luck and the skills of others rather than himself. Clouseau never really solved any crime either. Things simply evolved in a way where Clouseau was able to stumble onto events somehow take the credit. Carell's Max Smart used to be a fattie before he lost weight to do better on his field agent tests which he has failed many times before. But Max Smart's character arc never really gets to the core of why Max wants so badly to be a field agent.

Other characters and performances come off as rather generic. Hathaway's uber-skilled Agent 99 is nothing special. Her scenes with Carell lack a great, sizzling chemistry, and the way they meet is fairly contrived along with her reply to Max saying something about competition.

And then there's The Rock, now credited under his real name Dwayne Johnson who is constantly trying to re-brand himself to remain relevant as a movie star so he can keep his asking price at its current level, despite not really having any significantly huge hits under his belt where he had the top billing. Johnson plays Agent 23, the top Control agent who is actually quite friendly with Max, and gets stuck at HQ after KAOS's initial attack. Johnson's Agent 23 just comes off as fairly plain and generic. He takes one pratfall pretty early that in terms of the character makes little sense. And then there's a rather predictable and dull plot twist that you should see coming.

For the villains there's Siegfried now played by Terence Stamp, and Shtarker by Borat's Davitian who thankfully keeps his clothes on for the entirety of this movie. Shtarker and Siegfried just come off as weak Bond villain wannabes. Siegfried has a little schtick which sadly amounts to using childish insults for his underlings. The role doesn't really amount to much, and is more or less an easy payday for Stamp. There's also WWE's The Great Khali who has a fairly significant role as Siegfried's KAOS henchman whom Max tries to befriend.

The movie is filled with cameos and visual references that fans of the original series should like, if you don't know about them already as many of them have been terribly kept secrets.

The 411Get Smart doesn't quite live up to the level of the original series. But it is an admirable attempt for the most part. It's funny and enjoyable, but not hilarious to the level of other genre parodies like The Hot Fuzz or Shaun of The Dead. The movie isn't quite as bad as other TV show-turned-movies such as I Spy, Charlie's Angels, Miami Vice, Starsky and Hutch, and countless other blunders.

Final Score:  7.0   [ Good ]  legend

Khali was more entertaining in this movie than he has been in his entire WWE run. And I think he has about as much screen time as The Rock.

I would have put it at about a 7.5-8, but I do agree with most of your review.

Maybe it was due to not very high expectations, but I found this to be a great movie. I don't think there was many jokes I didn't laugh at, and they were fast and furious. Anne Hathaway was insanely hot in here imo. I personally didn't see the "predictable plot twist" coming. In hindsight I should have but I didn't because I was laughing too much. It wasn't a perfect movie, but I fully enjoyed it.

Um....The Game Plan made like $130mil...I'd call that a hit...

Starsky and Hutch was OK, but it was really nothing like the TV show at all.

The Game Plan did very well, but was a dumb comedy, and it still made less than $100 million. The Rock's asking price is in the ball park of about $12 million. And that's a pretty hefty asking price despite not starring in any movie that has made more than $100 million domestic US BO.

The great khali did a good job in the movie.

The Rock did The Gameplan, the huge hit that made him a favorite of Disney. So, that kind of kills your theory. That and the fact that he has been involved in 8 number one movies.

No theory is killed.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?view=Actor&id=rock.htm

The Gameplan - $90 million.

Southland Tales - bomb and epic fail.

Gridiron Gang - $38 million, budget of $30 million plus.

Doom - teh bombz, epic fail.

Be Cool - 5th billing, $56 million.

Walking Tall - $46 million, opened #2.

The Rundown - budget of $85 million. US BO = $47 million.

The Scorpion King - $91 million.

The Mummy Returns - He's in it for about 5 minutes, $210 million.

The pattern I see is that he hasn't been in a single movie where he was the real star or given 1st billing that has made over $100 million US BO. Scorpion King and Gameplan come close, but their only over $100 million if you can worldwide BO, DVD sales, whatever. I question how much profit were made on some of his movies as well which might've barely broken even.

Get Smart he plays a fairly average role and is given third billing in the movie to Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway.

I agree with this review, a very strong 7. It was funny, decent action, and extremely entertaining. I'd even go out on a limb and say that I wouldn't mind a sequel. And the Rock was decent in this film, you enjoyed his character when he was there. Loved Great Khali as well. Get Smart=Epic Win (why....it's a family worthy action film.)

"What was wrong with Starsky and HUtch?"

Other than the fact the the acting was terrible, the movie wasn't funny, and it sucked overall...nothing.

wow... did the Rock cut you off in traffic or something...

I can understand the 7 rating, but I personally thought that this movie was great. No one can capture Don Adams character but Carell did a really good job adopting his own take on Max. I would have given this movie a Solid 8. Great comedy to catch this summer

At this point, the way Hollywood is rehashing everything, I think they are more worried with making money, as opposed to having a blockbuster movie... How many original intellectual properties become blockbusters anymore? I don't think Studio's greenlight original scripts with expectations of it becoming a blockbuster anymore. Since the Gameplan costs an estimated 22 million to make, I would sake a box office of 90 million is pretty damn good. I'd have no problem paying someone 12 million dollars if they can get me back 7 times that much. Add to this that most of his roles have been amusing, and for the most part entertaining, I'd say he is doing fine.

A lot of Judd Apatow movies are original scripts that get greenlighted and become huge hits: Anchorman, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Super Bad, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He's got a pretty good track record over the last several years.

The movie was okay, but pretty over-hyped. I'm glad it came it first cause it'll probably slide off the charts pretty quickly. Maybe coming in 4th or 5th next week, and in the bottom four the week after.

So far this summer, EVERY single movie is getting exactly the credit it deserves. Iron Man is an incredble movie and deserves all of it's attention. Speed Racer and The Happening are complete bombs, and got exactly the reception they deserve (The Happening really ought've debuted in like, 8th place, honestly) The Love Guru, which looks like garbage, bombed this weekend, and Get Smart, while not that great, came in a semi-respectable #1 at $40 mil. The biggest underrated movie of teh summer so far though, is The Incredible Hulk. Frankly, I'm surprised it even got the #1 spot, becuase it looks REALLY boring by the ads and trailers, and the only action scene they seem to ever show is the Hulk/Abomination standoff in the streets.

But, yeah. So far, EVERYTHING has worked out exactly the way it should. I guess people are finally getting sick of crap summer movies. Now, all we have to do is wait to see if Hancock bombs as it deserves to and if The Dark Knight can come even CLOSE to reaching Iron Man numbers.

Oh snap. Harris just sonned you fools with the figures. Good review man.

Dude, MP? you are even that smart or that dumb. Hancock will be a box office hit because of will smith. and probally will get good reviews. and the dark knight will deffintly break iron man's numbers and be at number one. early reviews compare it to the godfather part 2 as being one of the greatest sequals of all time, and it will deffintly be up for best picture. The hulk deserved the top spot because it was a great action movie. the most underated movie of the summer was iron man. plain and simple. it really wasn't that great.

Posted By: MP your an idiot (Guest)  on June 28, 2008 at 12:39 PM

For the guy above with terrible spelling and grammar. If you think Iron Man wasn't that great, that makes it overrated, not underrated. You sound like an arrogant Batman mark that's desperate to believe The Dark Knight will be the biggest movie of all time. Which is cool because I like Batman and all, and I want the movie to do well. But don't count your eggs before they hatch.
