Hancock Review [2]
Posted by Erik Luers on 07.05.2008

Never before have I been so accurately able to pinpoint the moment where all potential is lost and flushed down the drain than in director Peter Berg's latest film, Hancock . There is one scene in the film that completely ruined whatever chance this idea's prospects were. Sure, its first forty-five minutes or so aren't that aptly handled to begin with, but there are some laughs and smirks provided by the more than capable Will Smith. I usually try to avoid spoilers within my reviews however, in this particular case, I feel there is no way I can express my disappointment with the film's screenplay without revealing several key moments. Don't think of them as spoilers as much as they are urgent warnings to avoid this flick.

As we are introduced to John Hancock (get it?), hungover and in a deep sleep, a gang unloads fire on a L.A. freeway, shooting at any innocent driver they come across. They all appear to be of Asian descent, perhaps because Berg has found a way to mock foreigners or Asian stereotypes. As the men discuss their plan of attack (in their native tongue), the subtitles on the screen indicate that they are speaking in broken English, implying that their syntax is all wrong. How can this be if they aren't even speaking in an English grammatical standard? They use a four letter word beginning with F that either the MPAA wouldn't allow (though we hear it later on), or that Berg found comical to have the spelling be along the lines of this: f@#k!!!. This is either racist, mean spirited, ethnocentric or all three combined. Also, why do the men mistake Hancock for hip hop star Soulja Boy? Is it because they're both black men? Is that supposed to be funny? A rocky introduction to say the least.

A few scenes later we see Ray Embrey (Jason Batemen of Teen Wolf 2 fame) inside his car, caught on the tracks of a quickly approaching train. Is he trying to commit suicide, fed up with unsuccessful ventures into the public relations market? Oh no, he just happens to have been pushed into the tracks by oncoming traffic. How that's even possible is anyone's guess. Would anybody honestly push his car through when the drivers have already been signaled not to cross due to dangers of getting hit by a locomotive? Of course not. The scene is only here so that Hancock can meet Ray by saving his life. How did Hancock know that Ray was in trouble? Umm, we're just supposed to accept that and move on. I couldn't.

Will Smith makes these early scenes somewhat bearable. He has a certain charm to him that allows his character to get away with being rude and abusive (one scene involves him attacking a young boy and it turns out to be more nihilistic than funny). Odd though that he speaks with a very current, slang-like urban vernacular when he is at the very least, pushing ninety years of age. The actors are not the problem here; they do the best they can given what and whom (Berg) they are working with.

The nail in the coffin arrives midway through the film when we learn that Mary Embrey (Charlize Theron) also possess super powers similar to Hancock's. In fact, hers' are even more powerful as she is able to change the climate and retain knowledge as to the origins of this super human species. When she reveals her powers to Hancock, she does so by throwing him through a wall in her own kitchen, followed by her freaking out about her husband finding out about her secret. I suppose she shouldn't have thrown Hancock through a wall in her own house then, huh? This scene is followed by Hancock, testing out the magnitude of her strength (or his ability to abuse women), smashing Mary in the back of her head with kitchen appliances while Ray hangs out in a nearby room. Surprisingly, she doesn't mind the destruction of her own property and stays calm.

When Mary arrives at Hancock's trailer, she arrives in a quick fashion, not by car mind you, but by flying physically in the air. Wouldn't people had noticed a blond female flying in the air? Doesn't she want to remain inconspicuous? Also, for all female superheros who may be reading this review: don't feel the need to tramp it up when you got out for a trip through the clouds. Mary puts on heavy mascara and a nice, tight suit showing off her ample cleavage. Now, I've heard of being committed to your occupation but talk about overdoing it. Maybe she ran into a representative of Barbarella's at the superhero college job fair. This scene leads to cheap exposition (so they are the only two left of their kind and have been around for thousands of years? Why isn't this in any history books anywhere? Where were these two geniuses when Lincoln was about to be assassinated?) A brawl takes place between the two that occurs in front of, and in one case: in, the building where Ray works. And Mary wanted to keep her superpowers a secret from her husband? Terence Howard should whoop this trick.

Despite a few funny one-liners early on, Hancock is a rather wasted, bloated summer effort. There's no real antagonist in the piece (besides the late appearing Captain Hook), which throws the entire structure of film completely off. Also, isn't Hancock a little too powerful? If bullets and explosives can't harm you, what can? Berg's answer is that to be near the ones you care for, will ultimately prove to be your downfall. I think every American learns that concept during Thanksgiving, Peter, but thanks for the tip. Perhaps Theron, after cashing in her big paycheck (so that's why she worked for peanuts on Monster ) asked the screenwriters to come up with an explanation as to why her character couldn't be in the inevitable sequel. So, if Mary gets too close to Hancock, they can both be killed, and we can't have that. Presto! We have validated Theron's "get out" clause in her contract.

Luckily, it appears though Hancock only has to be a few thousand miles from Mary to survive and prosper, say New York perhaps. One must only wait a few moments to see what kind of stereotypical predicaments Hancock will get himself into in the Big Apple. Mike Epps shows up as a wisecracking criminal, for a "during the credits, leave the audience happy" childish cameo. Sigh. You know what? I would have been much happier to have seen Nick Fury.

The 411: In the spirit of the late film critic Pauline Kael, and her knack for using sexually implied essay titles, Hancock sucks the big one. An M. Night Shyamalan-like twist sinks this film faster than the unfortunate sailboat that encounters a whale early in the film. For a fourth of July tentpole blockbuster, Hancock severely disappoints.

Final Score:  3.0   [ Bad ]  legend

This movie is not as bad as you make it out to be...it wasn't supposed to have a main antagonist...it was mostly about Hancock trying to get on the good side of the public while also trying to find his identity...
Most people at my theater really enjoyed and came out the theater either smiling or laughing...
Overall it was a fun movie to watch on a night out with friends and family...

This is a horrible review and Hancock is an excellent movie. Erik sounds like he's got too much of an ego to be reviewing movies...maybe he should move on to wine tasting or dog shows.

Horrible review sir. Sure, the movie wasn't great, but your criticisms are way off base. Better luck next time.

whoa? this is a terrible review. do yourself a favor and stop reviewing movies. i mean a 3.0? that's alittle to harsh at what i found was a good super hero movie. granted it wasn't that great. but the effects were amazing and it was entertaining. i think 411mania needs to stop reviewing movies period.

"Wahh, your tastes differ to mine, therefore you are poopy and should be shunned."

Hey, folks, you realise that not everyone is going to have the same idea about things as you. Get over yourselves.

Does Erik have some sort of grudge against this film, maybe? Because he certainly seems to be going out of his way to find as many flaws with it as possible. Using sentences like "They all appear to be of Asian descent, perhaps because Berg has found a way to mock foreigners or Asian stereotypes" and "This is either racist, mean spirited, ethnocentric or all three combined" show what the real motive is behind this review.

The movie really wasn't all that bad. It was entertaining, funny at times, and had a twist to it that I was not expecting. Wine tasting...thats hilarious.

I'd take Hancock over Indy 4 any day...
I actually fell asleep while watching Indiana Jones...yeah it sucked that much for me...

id be a little generous and give this movie a 4.5 MAYBE a 5 but the story changes too much and not in a good way, it's too far stretched from what people think it would be about and that takes away a lot from the movie

This review was a little harsh but come on, the second part of this movie sucked. The first half I was like "Wow, funniest Will Smith movie ever", then came the plot twist. By the end of the movie, I felt like slapping Charlize Theron in the face.

Pretty bad review. You're being very harsh about the opening scenes. I thought the first half of the movie was very funny. The second half was a bit confusing, but the movie wasn't horrible.

So what if the gang members were all of asian descent? I honestly thought they were of hispanic descent which demographically would have been approrpriate for the setting of the film. Either way it doesn't matter. There is too much "walking on egg shells" in human interaction these days and banter like yours doesn't help. Take a step out of your own precepts and notions when reviewing a film, you'll fare off better.

This review was dead on. There were a few laughs in the first half but essentially the twist was so poorly handled that it ruined the movie. Its like they had one script and someone *cough Will Smith cough* said lets funny it up a bit. It just seemed like two different films smushed together whose sum was a total flop. I really enjoy most Will Smith movies but I think either he or the director really dropped the ball. I mean the screenplay couldnt have been that bad could it?

I guess I was lucky. I caught a spoiler on IO9 so I knew going on what the real story was. I LOVED this movie, stereotypes, crassness and all. I'd totally see it again and buy it on DVD.

My Luers' analytical review was right on par with how I felt upon leaving the theater...this film simply had more holes than swiss cheese. There is no resolution, hardly any valid exposition when we need there to be, and while the film served as an interesting study on the psyche of skepticism (the disgruntled citizens), it could not do so without *sigh* stereotype...think the "McDonald's man" and the comments from the opening hoodlums in the highway chase. I still cannot comprehend why the bully needed to be of that European descent, but still, Mr. Luers brings forth a valid point. Also, Mary wanting to remain incognito is perhaps the biggest understatement in any film we will see this summer. All in all, 3 out of 10 is tough, but you guys have to realize that this was a train destined for a wreck midway through, and if you cant see that, then let reviews like this enlighten you a little bit.

This movie isn't perfect, but it's VERY good. Very different, too, but still entertaining. I was actually physically excited by how good the movie was in the first half. I couldn't get the smile off of my face. Best superhero movie ever in the first half.

Then comes the plot twist, and it does get a little bogged down, but it's not terrible. It's just not what people were expecting, which was Good Guy, Bad Guy, Explosions, Wisecracks, Happily Ever After (until the sequel). Instead, we get a hugely unexpected character study, which was great. I don't buy many movies, but I'll end up buying this one.

Also, Will Smith's acting in this one should be commended. He never phones it in in this one (or in almost any other movie I've seen him in, now that I think about it).

Don't be fooled--this is a movie about a superhero, but it's not a superhero movie. And it's great!

its funny that he gets hung up on things like charlize theron's character in the movie not getting upset over the destruction of her property.. its funny because its a movie about SUPERHEROES excuse me but if her not getting upset about her personal belongings being damaged makes the movie hard to believe you're an idiot.. becuase like i said its about super heroes
p.s. i liked the movie. take it for what it is.. a movie about superheroes its not trying to win an oscar

Wow... Worst review I have ever read. You think maybe they referred to him as souljaboy because of Soujlaboys song about a superman? The word Fuck was censored because the flick is rated PG1-13 and you are only allowed to use that word once in a PG-13 flick. And how is it stereotypical to use Asian gangsters in LA? Doesn't LA have a large Hispanic population?
As far as them being thousands of years old, if you would have paid attention, instead of seemingly looking for the dumbest shit to be mad at, you would have heard Theron's character tell you that they are referred to throughout history. They are sometimes known as gods, and in this era, they just happen to be known as Super-Heros. Bad review, from what seems like a very bitter man. The fact that you found racism in two seperate parts of the film, when it clearly was not there, to me, screams of someone going into the movie, with the intention of hating on it. First half was great, second half felt a bit rushed, but I can't wait for the directors cut.
One more thing, it's funny how he mentions the bad stereotyping of minorities, but makes no mention of the positively cast African Amercian Police Chief... Hmmm. if you are focused on race, that would be something worth looking into.
I suppose you were deeply upset at the prison scene, because it was the black guys head in the white mans ass, and not the other way around. Eric needs to stay away from reviewing movies.

I love movies so much ~even bad ones~that I've only walked out out on two in my entire movie going life of over 40 years. With Hancock, I'm up to three walk-outs.

This was terrible on many dimensions. Will Smith, normally wonderful, seemed like a mean, dirty, scary drunk panhandler you wouldn't want to see on your driveway. PG-13? NO. NO. NO. How about R? I would never let my grandchildren see this. The acting was horrible, both Smith and Theron. The plot?? made no sense at all and seemed disconnected from scene to scene. I could go on but save your money and go to something else.

This Reviewer is retarded.
Asian Gang stereotype? It's not a stereotype when there are asian gangs.

Violence against women? When the bitch has superpowers- ALL BETS ARE OFF.

Superheroes in our REAL history books? What the H-E-double-hockey-sticks does that supposed to mean? Does that mean you didn't like Superman because there was no documented case of rocket crash landing in a small Kansas town? That reasoning is just plain idiotic.

NEWSFLASH: Superhero Chicks are SUPPOSED to be half-naked! The target demographic is 13 year old boys for Cripes sake.

This movie may suck but you, sir, are the suckier of the two by far. You should be given your walking papers forthwith and have your Word Document privileges revoked indefinitely.

Thanks.

Hancock was a great movie. It was a creative way to portray a superhero by not following the stereotypical storyline of a good guy. When Charlize Theron's secret is revealed about her superpowers, the movie became more interesting with my curiousity wondering "what will happen next". The first half of the movie was very funny, and the twist in the second half kept me engaged. I will buy this movie when it comes out.
