Tropic Thunder Review

TROPIC THUNDER

Directed By: Ben Stiller
Written By: Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux, and Etan Cohen
Runtime: 107 minutes
Official Website: Tropic Thunder Official Site
MPAA Rating: Rated R for pervasive language including sexual references, violent content and drug material.

Tug Speedman - Ben Stiller
Kirk Lazarus - Robert Downey Jr.
Jeff Portnoy - Jack Black
Kevin Sandusky - Jay Baruchel
Alpa Chino - Brandon T. Jackson
Damien Cockburn - Steve Coogan
Four Leaf Tayback - Nick Nolte
Rob Slolom - Bill Hader
Cody - Danny McBride
Rick Peck - Matthew McConaughey
Tran - Brandon Soo Hoo
Les Grossman - You Know Who

The audience that jam-packed the Horton Plaza theatre on July 23rd, preview night of the 2008 San Diego Comic Con, in the Gas Lamp District of San Diego, CA for an advanced screening of the new comedy, Tropic Thunder, was treated to a little something extra. Before the movie, stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. gave their own personalized introduction of the flick for the Comic Con audience. Then they started arguing over who the bigger fanboy was. Downey Jr. of course was being a total arrogant ass since he's busting up box office records after playing Tony Stark/Iron Man this summer. Stiller argues that he's the biggest fanboy after he brings out his old school Star Trek TV series collectibles, like the original Gorn mask and Spock's ears. Black tries to play friendly mediator, and Downey Jr. says something to the affect of, "wanting to put himself inside all of us," and Ben Stiller going all, "Yeah, Iron Man, wooooh!"

And then finally came the movie. Tropic Thunder, bar none, without hyperbole the funniest comedy of the year. Even more than that, Tropic Thunder is most distinct since it's the first movie Ben Stiller has directed that's actually, truly funny. Not to say that Cable Guy and Zoolander are horrible films without quirks and slightly amusing moments, but Stiller generally failed with both those flicks. Let's also not get started on Reality Bites, his directorial debut. With Tropic Thunder, working off a script and story Stiller co-wrote with Justin Theroux (the actor-turned writer who is currently working on writing Iron Man 2), Stiller finally succeeds in delivering a drop-down, knock-out, funny flick that delivers in spades while also being a great Hollywood movie industry riff.

Stiller plays Tugg Speedman, a waning action hero that's coming off a tremendous flop called "Simple Jack" in which he delved into drama by playing a mentally retarded man. Tugg's looking for a comeback playing the lead role in a Vietnam War picture based on an apparent true story and life of the double-hook-handed veteran, Four Leaf Tayback (Nolte). Tugg unfortunately has to share the screen with an extreme, Aussie method actor, Kirk Lazarus (Downey Jr.). There's also Jeff Portnoy (Black), a comedy actor addicted to drugs due to his own self-loathing for his toilet humor laced starring roles.

The picture is shooting on location, and due to the tension between the leads and an inexperienced director, Damien Cockburn (Coogan), things aren't going so well. The borderline debacle of a movie shoot even has the lugubrious, pot-bellied financier, Les Grossman (You know who), seething with Diet Coke out his nostrils. So the gruff Tayback formulates a solution to Cockburn. Dump the whiney, diva performers into the bush and shoot them in the elements, "guerilla style." Unfortunately, they are dumped smack dab into the area for an Asian drug cartel called the Dragons who are led by a young, evil, little boy, Tran (Brandon Soo Hoo). Speedman thinks they are still shooting the picture, while the rest of the boys realize that something is up.

With the set-up of the film, it first appears that Tropic Thunder might play like a modern update of The Three Amigos, with the actors thinking they are playing in what is actually a real, grave situation. Instead the story unexpectedly doesn't, and that idea only stays for a short while on Tugg and his own dim ignorance.

With all this talent in one movie, a lot of the performers fight to steal the show. But the #1 pick has got to be Downey Jr. as Kirk Lazarus, who sums up his excellent character with . . . well . . . he's the dude playing a dude that thinks he's another dude . . . wait, what? OK, Downey Jr. is hilarious playing a hilarious shout-out to the Russell Crowe's and method actor types of the world. There's really nothing controversial about the fact that the character of Lazarus in the story goes through a procedure to have his skin dyed to a darker color so he can play an African American in the Nam picture. The multi-faceted rapper Alpa Chino (Jackson) doesn't let up with his displeasure toward the ridiculous lengths Lazarus takes his technique. When everyone realizes they are in real danger, Lazarus still holds on to the characters. Downey Jr. is really a joy to watch these days since his career rebirth, so hopefully it can stay this way since he's on an absolute roll.

There's also You Know Who as Les Grossman and my fellow Longhorn alum, McConaughey, as Tugg's agent, Rick Peck. At first it is difficult to recognize You Know Who under piles of make-up, but it's hard not to chuckle at it especially through the gut-busting closing credit sequence. McConaughey's Peck is also surprisingly fun as Tugg's slimy agent who feels that TiVo is the key to keeping all your clients happy. Also notable is Jay Baruchel's Sandusky. Baruchel does an excellent job as a young, newcomer performer as well as the role of an able straight man amongst all the veterans and lots of lunacy.

More than anything, where the movie really delivers is the action-packed, blow-away third act. What's amazing about it, is that recently rarely do you see a movie that mixes action and comedy so well. And Tropic Thunder rocks the camel's ass in this area. The action is totally old school awesome, while still keeping the hilarity dialed up to 11. Think Hot Fuzz with more of a jungle, Rambo type of setting.

Recently there has been some a ridiculous controversy brought up over one of the movie's many movie-within-a-movie in-jokes with Stiller's Tugg Speedman as the retarded "Simple Jack". Most sensible people can really just recognize that this is more of a parody of Hollywood's portrayal of the "mentally challenged" and trying to turn that particular type of role into awards bait or a "serious turn" for a performer, some tightwads had to complain. There's really nothing offensive about this flick at all.

The 411: Hey, if this is what we have in store for the Stiller and You Know Who's team-up for a Hardy Boys re-imagining count me in. You Know Who and Stiller just seem to always be a winning combination, going as far back as their MI:2 skit from way back in the decade. It took Stiller a while, but he finally nails theatrical comedy directing, but he didn't do it alone with such an amazing ensemble here. Hats off to Stiller for a truly amazing, hard R-rated, take no prisoners comedy, the caliber of which we have not seen for years.
411 Elite Award
Final Score:  9.5   [  Amazing ]  legend

This has all the hallmarks of a fantastic movie.. it will blow Hot Shots out of the water..

Screw Hot Shots. This is a real movie.

No comedy will ever touch the 10 star comedy of Epic Movie.

Is There sOMe CRedible reason you don't refer to "yoU know who" by hIS rEal name? Dumbs up your review.

Max Power 3: You're right, it does dumb up the review, but your awkward upper case placement has dumbed up your comment.

What's with the Hot Shots references? Hot shots was a parady, not a comedy.

It's "you know who" cos it's supposed to be a surprise, dummies. I recall he was pretty pissed off when the news leaked that he was in the movie.

Posted By: poffo316 (Guest)  on August 10, 2008 at 07:20 PM

Just see the movie and you find out You Know Who is.

I'd rather keep it vague even though you can just do two clicks and look it up on IMDB. It makes it different.

Can't wait to see this shit. I didn't even know it was Ben Stiller-directed.

Oh c'mon. You can't seriously think this is anything but a sad excuse for a movie, CCCCCAN YOU? How much is DDDDDreamworks paying you, dude? This movie sssssucks eggs and after a few days it's gonna be like SSSSSSpeed Tuggman's ccccccareer. In the tttttoilet. Anyone caught in line or inthe theater laughing is either on drugs or didn't pass third grade. It's Rated R but clearly the target audience never ventured from reading anything but Mad Magazine and National Lampoon. The trailer resembles something of a comedic challenge for Downey sans racial slur but the actual movie is a rip off. Stiller's spoof is like drawing in black sharpie a bikini on Michaelango's David or turning a Kubric's masterpiece into a cartoon.

STAY HOME. Get off the drugs. Stay in school

This movie does have laugh out loud moments (And a great special appearance), but I guess you could call me a, “Tightwad,” as Jeff did in his review. I could not get over the blatant slap in the face to the mentally handicapped. I’m all for parody, which is what I believe Downey Jr’s character is (And he and the writers do a great job), but Stiller DOES NOT do a good parody. He’s just blatantly insulting, which is sad because it makes a great movie become intolerable. This movie had potential to be a great one (And like I said, it does have great moments), but the unfortunate material by Stiller makes it simply insulting.
Such a waste.

Posted By: Grabber (Guest)  on August 12, 2008 at 11:43 AM

Really what was insulting about it? The character was a bit of an idiot. He was a dumb action star that was trying to take a "dramatic turn", and he thought by playing a mentally handicapped person it would earn him an oscar. So he "studied" retarded people and thought hey this is great acting work while not understanding that he's disrespecting them as well as the audience with the character.

How does this truly ruin an entire movie?

lol@rage not understanding that the guy only "awkwardly" capitalized the certain letters of a "certain someone's" name...

I really, really enjoyed this movie. Maybe not 9.5 good, but a very funny movie.

I can see why people think the "Retard" parts of the movie are insulting. They were over the top and unnecessary, and not really all that well done in my opinon.

But there's no way I would say it ruined the movie. A great comedy I would recommend to all.

what is it with all the PC pussies emerging on this site. First they ruin the comments section on the Pineapple Express reviews and now they're bitching here. Get over yourselves people, its a fucking movie. Just sit back and enjoy it and if the rod up your ass is too damn thick for that than just stay home and let everyone else enjoy it.

Oh and before some moron posts that i obviously don't know any retarded people and therefore am ignorant to how this movie makes people feel. I have a severely retarded aunt who hasn't left the hospital since the age of 7. I love her very much and yet can still somehow find it in myself to use the word retarded and watch movies where they make fun of the retarded cause thats all they are, words and movies.

Just saw it last night. Don't think it was by any means a GREAT comedy. It had several VERY funny moments and lines, but I was still a little disappointed with the overall picture. Downey Jr. was great for the most part and I think Jay Baruchel plays his role perfectly.

What brought this movie down for me was "you know who". I found 98% of his scenes to be quite stupid and lame. "Gut busting closing credit sequence"??? Are you serious?! I think both the actor and the writers were trying too hard to make his performance funny that it had the opposite effect.

Loved the fake trailers though, especially the last one with Downey Jr's character and the "MTV movie award winner for Best Kiss"

Sorry man, but when I saw the movie everyone was applauding during that.

Yeah this movie was nowhere near amazing. I would have had more fun seeing Pineapple Express again.

Just got back from seeing it.... f'ing hilarious... plenty of funny moments..

I have now seen both films.
I Laughed at Pineapple Express... but I was crazy stoned. I wouldn't of laughed as much sober.
I LOL'ed multiple times for Tropic Thunder, sober.
Tropic Thunder wins.

I loved the jabs at the movie industry, but overall I think Pineapple Express was the funnier movie. This was pretty damn good though. I knew You Know Who was in the movie but I didn't figure out which character he was until right before the credits. GREAT make up job there.

The booty sweat and other trailers were real funny. I would pay to watch a Simple Jack movie. Step Brothers was still more funny though.

That scene where they get of the helicopter, to start filming the movie 'guerilla style', took me right back to 'Deep Blue Sea'. Hopefully you'll understand what I mean, if you saw both movies.

saw it last night, and fucking laughed my ass off, i haven't laughed that much in the theater since anchorman came out

Posted By: go see it (Guest)  on August 16, 2008 at 04:08 PM

This movie sucks. Really, it does. And it's not even funny, seriously! I laughed once the entire time. I should have never seen another Stiller film after Starsky and Hutch. Why do they let this guy still make movies? Stiller demands the attention of the audience at all times even though he can't make the audience laugh, and the whole Robert Downey Jr. thing is annoying and just feels weird and kinda wrong. Seriously, if you absolutely have to see this movie, go during the matinee show where you'll spend half the dough for a ticket. I am mad I wasted my money on this film. I want my $10 back.
If you are looking or a laugh, go see Pineapple Express or Stepbrothers instead--they are really funny, a lot more originial and decidedly more authentic.

Courtney, stop playing 'full retard', & see it for the satire it's meant to be.

This was without a doubt the most horrribly offensive movie. I walked out before it ended.

As the sibling of a person with a mental disability - and as a decent human being - I found the cracks at those mentally challenged to be incredibly insensitive. It was over the top and unnecessary.

As a female I do not at all appreciate being constantly referred to as "pussy." The term is incredibly demeaning and further contributes to the degredation of women. Can we please progress as a society?

I should have known before I went to go see this movie that it would be horrible. I have never enjoyed a Ben Stiller movie. He is not funny in the least. However, at my boyfriends request I went to see the movie and now regret that decision.

I left the theater horribly offended and short of the ten dollars I wasted.

Please shut yo ass up. Firstly, women in the movie were never actually referred to as that. In fact, if I remember correctly, Jackson was the only one to use the word and "degrading women" wasn't a very big part of the movie. And please stop with the "advancing society" crap. What's wrong wth people going to the movie and laughing and having a good time?

Secondly, my cousin is mentally challenged and I didn't find any of the "Simple Jack" stuff overlly offensive. I thought some of it was a little overboard, but nothing outright offensive. Please get over yourself. And I think you are going way overboard by saying that Stiller's not even funny. You can't tell me that after seeing a few of his movies, he's never made you laugh.

Posted By: Bobby (Guest)  on August 18, 2008 at 01:37 AM

I really wonder if people calling this movie offensive really watched it. I also wonder if the people saying its offensive are just trying to advance an agenda.

I stand by this: There is nothing truly offensive, derogatory, or degrading in the movie at all. The controversy is trumped up BS.

The movie as far as retarded people go, was making fun of self-important Hollywood roles. Like when actors try to ACT mentally challenged in order to be considered "legitimate" or get oscar bait material.

Also, if you can't laugh at the "Never go full retard" speech you need to get the stick out your ass and GET A FREAKING SENSE OF HUMOR.

Is it "Superbad" funny or "Anchorman" funny?

Posted By: Zing Wong (Guest)  on August 18, 2008 at 04:23 PM

it's neither like anchor man or superbad... It's more like Full Metal Jacket meets Zoolander.

Posted By: zane (Guest)  on August 18, 2008 at 06:29 PM

The cracks were NOT aimed at the mentally challenged!!!!!

The cracks were at how the no-talent, hack, METHOD actors... and Hollywood elitist wriers & directers... PORTRAY mentally challenged people.

The performances by maggot-infested pieces of dogshit like Sean Penn, Leonardo DiCaprio and Juliette Lewis were FAR more offensive to the mentally challenged than ANYTHING in this movie.

If you didn't like the movie because you didn't think it was funny then be a fucking ADULT and admit it. Don't make shit up to justify your dislike... because YOU are the ones spitting in the faces of mentally challenged people by doing that.

FUCK method actors!!!

Once again, controversy nothing more than an attention grab by PC groups.

I saw this movie with some friends. Black and white. Not caring much about political correctness, I tend to look to my "darker" friends for guidance on how not to offend.

EVERY ONE OF US WERE LAUGHING TOO HARD TO CARE ABOUT THE RACIAL DEAL OR THE RETARDED DEAL.

Yes, not ALL racial situations are funny. Nor are ALL mental ilnesses. However, like ALL things in life....THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS.

Grow a funny bone and laugh at what makes you laugh. Maybe if we laughed at more things, we can begin to see how ALIKE we all are.

I really don't get how people could get offended at this movie, but whatever. Different strokes for different folks. Personally, I thought this movie was hilarious, but what really had me laughing the most was Robert Downey Jr. Seriously, every single line he had was flat out hilarious. I mean, I'm black, and I thought he did a damn good job playing his role, which was not offensive in the least. Shit, I'm laughing while typing this just thinking about his character.

"I'M A LAND FARMER MOTHERFUCKER".

That shit is just funny. I don't know how people could not laugh at that.

Posted By: StrykersWeaponX (Guest)  on August 22, 2008 at 10:28 AM

Downey Jr. said "lead farmer" not land farmer.

Maybe I should have been high to see this shit, but it wasn't funny whatsoever, all of my friends agreed as well.

The movie got somewhat good then just suddenly ended for me.
