"Star Wars: The Clone Wars," a theatrically released pseudo pilot for the upcoming Cartoon Network television series of the same name, isn't very good. In fact, it's quite boring. Featuring a story that takes place between "Attack of the Clones" (Episode II) and "Revenge of the Sith" (Episode III), the animated flick is undermined by a basic lack of purpose, not to mention absolutely horrible direction and pacing from director Dave Filoni.
And that's just for starters.
The Clone Wars have been waging for some time when the flick starts, as General Jedis Obi-Wan Kenobi (voice of James Arnold Taylor) and Anakin Skywalker (voice of Matt Lanter) lead their Republic Clone troopers against the invading Banking Clan/Confederacy of Independent Systems droid troops on the planet of Christophsis. When that battle eventually ends (and for a while there it seems like the battle will never end), Skywalker is given his own Padawan, a spunky young female alien named Ahsoka Tano (voiced by Ashley Eckstein) and a mission from Yoda (voice of Tom Kane): to rescue the recently kidnapped nephew of Jabba the Hutt. If Jabba's nephew isn't rescued, the notorious criminal Hutt clan will not allow the Republic to use its territories to advance troops and supplies and whatnot, which will be bad for their ongoing conflict with Count Dooku (voiced by Christopher Lee) and his breakaway Confederacy. The Republic will be doomed.
Now, there's nothing essentially wrong with this story. Yeah, it sounds a bit hokey, but the flick is obviously aimed at children and is supposed to have a decidely lighter tone than the movies that preceed and proceed it. Again, there's nothing wrong with any of that. However, had the flick taken itself a tad more seriously (and I don't mean seriously in the sense that the flick should have been a dark and brooding psychological drama, I mean it should played itself more like an actual movie, with a beginning, middle, and end as opposed to an extended video game cut scene), perhaps it wouldn't have been so tedious to sit through. And, for the most part, it's a tedious experience. The story spends too much time on the various battles on Christophsis, never explaining why they're so important. By the time the actual "let's rescue Jabba's nephew" story kicks in, you're worn down by the seemingly endless series of explosions and Clone/droid attacks on the streets of Christophsis and you don't notice that an attempt at an actual story is taking place. I know I didn't, not for like twenty minutes afterwards. And when I finally did notice an actual story was taking place, I didn't care. I just wanted the whole thing to be over.
The flick's other major problem is it's basic lack of purpose. Because we know what happens to Anakin and Obi-Wan, Palpatine, Count Dooku, the Republic and all the rest, the whole endeavor seems pointless. Had this series been created to actually play between "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith" maybe it wouldn't seem like such a waste of time. Count Dooku isn't as menacing as he should be (we all know he goes down like a punk), seeing Mace Windu (voiced by Smauel L. Jackson) and Yoda actively working with murdering scumbag Palpatine, not to mention the Clone troopers working side by side with the Jedi, it's all just so bizarre, somewhat creepy, and tiresome. It's hard to take anything seriously or get into that sense of goofy fun Lucas, Filoni and company are trying very hard to create. It just doesn't work.
And then there's the voice work. Aside from the returning Jackson and Lee and an appearance by Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, none of the original movie cast comes back to voice their characters. That's a shame. Matt Lanter, Anakin's voice talent, and James Arnold Taylor, who is Kenobi's voice guy, try very hard to sound like Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor but they don't quite pull it off. What's sad is they're the best of the cast. Ashley Eckstein, who plays newcomer Ahsoka, does an okay job at first, but she gets slowly more annoying as the story progresses (and it's not really Eckstein's fault. The flick tries too hard to use Ahsoka to appeal to young girls instead of just having her as a female character in the story). Everyone is just sort of "blah," with the possible exception going to Corey Button's work on Ziro the Hutt.
Now, what works here? In general, the animation has a nice, clean look that's fun to look at. The characters have an interesting stylized look about them (although it probably would have been wise to also stylize their environments, because Coruscant and Tatooine look exactly like they do in episodes II and III. It's weird seeing somewhat herky jerky versions of Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker inhabiting those places). Asajj Ventress (voiced by Nika Futterman) is a cool looking villain, sort of like a more developed Darth Maul. And Ziro the Hutt, Jabba's uncle, is a fun new addition to the expanding Hutt clan of criminals (I'm sure Ziro will get more play in the TV show). I just wish we got more from them.
"Star Wars: The Clone Wars," despite its general badness, isn't going to destroy the franchise. What it will do, though, is probably make it harder for the TV series to get up and running. The hardcore "Star Wars" fans will show up and support the show, but, if this flick is a general template for what the show is going to offer every week, I don't know who else besides them will watch. If only the flick had made itself more of a movie. If only the flick had found a way to establish itself a bit better. If only the flick had a better reason to exist.
Only see it if you have to.
So what do we have here? No opening Twentieth Century Fox fanfare (granted, Warner Bros isn't going to use a rival movie company's opening, but, come on, that opening fanfare is a part of "Star Wars"), gratuitous "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...," gratuitous weird version of opening "Star Wars" theme, no opening crawl, gratuitous voice over attempting to explain what's going on, gratuitous Jabba the Hutt, gratuitous Samuel L. Jackson retruning as Mace Windu, gratuitous Clone troop/Confederacy droid army battle that goes on seemingly forever, butt kicking, jet packs, punching a droid in the face, gratuitous new female Padawan, gratuitous Yoda, a Clone soldier with blue armor, hiding under a metal box, gratuitous shield generator, collapsing a wal on droids, gratuitous fake negotiating with the enemy, gratuitous Jabba's palace, gratuitous bounty hunters, a pink R2 unit, gratuitous R2D2, gratuitous Jawas, a big ass wall climbing tank, cool scene where Anakin steals a droid speeder in the air, gratuitous cute little Hutt, gratuitous Christopher Lee as Count Dooku, gratuitous Sith villain using a double bladed lightsaber, gratuitous rolling death balls, decapitations, gratuitous lightsaber fights, gratuitous light speed, gratuitous Tatooine, gratuitous Padme, gratuitous C-3PO, gratuitous "Star Wars" jazz bar band, gratuitous dune sea, a potential execution, and a bland ending.
Best lines: "They're back," "I told you this victory was too easy," "Skywalker should have attacked by now," "Do you really think it's a good idea to bring a Padawan into this?," "Anakin, teasing is a privelage," "Good, good. Everything is going as planned," "Stop calling me that. I'm yours Sky guy," "In my book, experience outranks everything," "If we survive this, Snips, you and I are going to have a talk," "That shield is putting a crimp in my day," "Good. You take direction well," "You must be the infamous General Kenobi," "Don't try any of your tricks, Jedi," "You! Bring us something liquid!," "Ah. Something appears to have happend to your shield, General," "Your timing is perfect, Master Yoda," "Don't worry. I'm sure Jabba is in a good mood," "Welcome to apardiose, rock jumpers," "I hate Hutts," "Where is Skywalker? I don't talk to seperatist scum," "Great! Rolling death balls!," "I think now is a good time for retreat," "Looks like we're going to have to take this bucket of bolts all the way to Tatooine," "Did you get shot down again?," "Welcome home, Stinky," "A senator? In this neighborhood?," "The sand is merciless. It can take everything from you," "I thought you liked playing in the sand?," "What have you done with my Padawan?," "Being a Padawan is harder than I thought," and "You are to be executed immediately."
The 411: "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" isn't very good. It's a plodding, boring affair that never really goes anywhere, despite some nice looking animation and a few cool scenes here and there. It's depressing that a "Star Wars" property is this bad. Unless you're a diehard "Star Wars" nerd, you're not going to sit through it. The kids will probably like it, though, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that. In fact, add another point-and-a-half to the rating below if you're a kid. You have been warned.
I'd see this just to hear Christopher Lee's voice... other than that, this movie doesnt interest me now more than ever

No surprise in that kind of review and score. Especially when a property that practically has its own religion releases a theatical movie that looks like it is Direct-To-DVD. I have never been a huge Star Wars fan, enjoying it but never obsessing over it, but this is something that should have hit the scrapped heap during conception.

I hope people aren't missing the point of this movie. It's a theatrical release to help grow some backing and fans for the T.V. show that will follow. The marketing, previews, reviews, trailers and toys for this movie will accomplish more then what would have happened if it went straight to T.V. in the first place. Whether or not it does well in the cinemas is hardly of a concern. It will just help gauge a T.V. audience when the show is finally put on the air. You'll get these three episodes on T.V. when it's released so you don't have to watch it at the cinema, but the talk this movie will create for the series justifies it's theatrical release.

I didn't know about this "movie" until I saw the trailer; there were some cartoony images and then Yoda or somebody says "Jabba the Hutt's son has been kidnapped". My response to seeing/hearing that was to say, out loud, "Oh just fuck off, Lucas!"

tht is stupid, u have said nothing but bad things about this movie and if u were as big of a star wars fan as i am u would have enjoyed it

Another crap for Lucas to make money off of

I made the mistake of reading this review without checking the author first. Luckily I stopped when I got to that inane gratuitous section. Why is this guy still reviewing films??
Posted By: Guest#3663 (Guest) on August 17, 2008 at 06:38 AM
I walked out of the theater halfway through. First time I've ever done that.
Posted By: Guest (Guest) on August 17, 2008 at 09:59 AM
You ONLY gave this movie a 5.5? But I was expecting NO HIGHER than a 2.5!
Seriously, avoid this movie like the plague. It is not part of the TRUE Star Wars-verse IMHO and actually makes Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and even Jar Jar Binks seem not so bad after all in comparison.

And while I agree with 90% of this review, there is too much gratuitous use of the word gratuitous. Annoying.

Sorry, but the CGI here pales in comparison to even the majority of newer video games.

The talk this movie creates could cripple the series.

I went on Friday and most of the audience was under 10. It played more like an extended Saturday morning cartoon than a feature length film. The film was no where as serious as it could have been and actually came off as more of a comedy aimed at the younger crowd. As a die hard star wars fan I would only give this film a C at best.

It's aimed at kids and it works. The kids at the theater I was at were all into it. I really think alot of people just to like to complain. Why overthink and over analyze Star Wars? These boards (not just 411) get very tiresome with people constantly complaining. It was not a great movie, butit was better than I expected after reading the nonstop complaining by the internet experts.

I have been looking forward to seeing this for quite some time. However, after reading 120 rotten reviews for it, I am starting to backtrack on my earlier stance.
If I decide not to see this 'flick' it will not be because of this review. Here are a couple of pointers for you:
It's a movie or film, not a flick.
Gratuitous does not need to be used every three seconds to get a point across.
Reviews don't need to have a word-count (which it seems you were trying to reach). The same point could have been made in five words:
This film sucks donkey balls.
I don't know who I'm more upset with here:
1: George Lucas for the continued ruinization of the Star Wars franchise.
2: Bryan Kristopowitz for the worst 'review' I've ever read in my life.
3: The 411 staff for posting said review.
4: Myself for wasting five minutes of my life trying to convey how much I hate imbeciles.

You guys are kidding me, this movie was one of the best for kids out this summer. I am a HUGE Star Wars fan and find it funny all you geeks hate it so much! What were you expecting? Hans Solo to come save the day? This was a KIDS MOVIES and kids int he theater LOVED it!! You losers on the boards should shut the F up and go see Batman again so you can count how many time the Joker touches himslef or something? Nanoo Nanoo and a Live Long and prosper Internet Bloggers. this was a GREAT Star Wars installment that has my six year old son excited about the series oncartoon network!! CYAAAA!!

I don't understand the focus on the prequel timeline. We already know what happens in the end, so there's no tension. Everyone wants to know what happens after ROTJ (sorry, the shitty EU doesn't count), no one cared about how Darth Vader became Darth Vader.

I have to say it was less then I expected. I was expecting an OK movie that gave a good story developing episode II to episode III. I know it is all setting up the future cartoon series but it didn't bridge the gap at all, it just went off on its own tangent. I actually fell asleep a couple times because even the action scenes became tedious. I'm not saying it was a horrible movie, and my 5 year old loved it, but even my 12 year old said it was lame and cheesey.
I don't get why the review gave it a 5.5, as he chopped the "Flick" down so bad I was expecting a 2-3 rating, and by the way that little excremint was Jabba's son not nephew. I'd actually have said about a 5, I wasn't offended by the movie in anyway, I just think the Star Wars name shouldn't be applied to a movie w/ no story that really effects or developes the building wars of the Star Wars Universe.

Anyone else think that Obi-Wan kind of sounds like Ringo Starr?
Posted By: Guest#1721 (Guest) on August 17, 2008 at 10:32 PM
Did anyone else notice that when they showed Darth Sidious he looked aged as if he already had his battle with Mace?

Have you guys seen the Clone Wars DVDs from the Carton Network. They are actually really good. I love Volume 1. From the sounds of it those are much, much better than this new movie. You should just check out the DVDs instead.

This remove mostly gets it right. I saw this with my friend and her son and while this was an improvement over the prior Clone Wars animated cartoon, it still lacks a cohesive story to make us care. Also, because we end up knowing what happens to all the characters it makes it hard to appreciate the action happening in-between. In a way, it comes off as tedious. Lucas should just stick to using his business to provide CGI and special effects to other movie-makers and leave things like stories, scripts, and character development to other directors.

This movie was pretty much just a hour and a half trailer for the new TV show

id like to slap george lucas right in the eye

Kristopowitz you should retire, or just get a life i dont know your choice
Posted By: 411 manias enemy (Guest) on August 18, 2008 at 09:31 AM
oh I'm sorry father of a boy who loved it but I could have expected a little better then a KIDS MOVIE considering how many people dug the whole series and could have made it entertaining for adults I mean its star wars for goodness sakes.
I agree with you Guest#2640 they need to do some focus on what happened between ROTS and the A new hope and fill in that time line instead of harping on the clone wars since we've now seen how that played out.

Dude, "gratuitous" means "unnecessary" or "unwarranted". Stop using words you don't understand. "Unnecessary Yoda"? Do me a favour.
Posted By: Fire Bryan (Guest) on August 19, 2008 at 07:28 AM
I love that people hate this.
Because, they're idiots.
They were all expecting this to be a massive Star Wars epic like when episode IV first came out.
IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE FOR FUN.
That's why they took the animation down to a cartoon level. This is supposed to tie in with the anime series. We know Lucas Arts can do good CGI.
So quit yer bitchin', and enjoy it for what it is.

hopefully this boring series will end as it should have a decade ago. Time for something new and fresh to take over not some outdated series.

Do you always need to fill space? Becase the "best lines" part is an out of context complete waste.

Saw the original cartoon series/miniseries on Cartoon Network between Episodes II and III. Those were actual cartoons in the vein of Justice League (new version) and such. Well done and had a decent plot, but didn't lose the train of thought at that time, which was to build to the release of Episode III. Haven't seen this one, but with the kids, I know I will have to. I just try to take the movie in the context of the time it was done. Obviously, this CGI movie just wants to market the upcoming series to the kids. If it does it well, I know where my time in the TV room will be spent, cause they won't let me watch anything else if it's a decent Star Wars cartoon.

Wow Bryan....one of the first times...and probably the last you and I will agree...although I would rate it lower..I'm Swedish and saw it with my little brother who's 5 years old (we have dubbed version for kids and original versions to)and we saw the Swedish talking version, that's why I disliked it even more I guess....but damn what a shitty movie....can't say one thing I liked about it...and I like Star Wars alot...at lest the old ones! This format and style is gonna make more sense in the tv-series....I hope!!
