411 Movies Feedback: What is Your Favorite Movie?
Posted by Chad Webb on 06.20.2009

Even though the argument could be made that movies are getting worse, the fact is that every year movies are released that thrill and inspire audiences. That raises 411's Movie Feedback question...

What is your favorite movie?

For me, my favorite film has not changed in many years. It is The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. I remember watching it for the first time over at a friend's house, and he felt the need to provide commentary on the twists in case I didn't understand. Despite this annoyance, that film struck a chord in me that few films have achieved since. It represents everything I love about film, and it caused an obsession of prison movies since then. To me, one's favorite movie is one that you can watch over and over again, but it never gets old.

So what about you? What is your favorite movie? How many times has your favorite movie changed over the years? What was it like when you watched it the first time?

A Few Good Men. I love this movie the comedy that's not over the top and the seriousness. Of course the great lines that will be used forever like you want me on that wall you need me on that wall. You can't handle the truth.

JFK. Even if you don't agree with it, you can't doubt how, in 3+ hours, you never once lose your fascination in such an epic story with such amazing characters.

Fight Club.
I remember watching this many years ago when I was younger, and thinking the twist was the greatest thing ever. But then I watched it a year or so ago, and absolutely loved every aspect of it. I just feel like the films speaks to me in ways others do not. Plus Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are two of my favourite actors. I think I've watched the film five times, and I could watch it again, and again, and still enjoy it as much as the last time.

Slumdog Millionaire is the work of an artist at the peak of his powers. India is Boyle’s palette, and Mumbai – that teeming “maximum city,” with 19 million strivers on the make, jostling, scheming, struggling, and killing for success – is his brush. The portrait that emerges has been executed with bold strokes, vivid colors, and striking images. It would have stayed in the mind’s eye a long time .

Honorable mentions -

Titanic

Star wars

Terms of Endearment

Silence of the Lambs

As a whipper-snapper it was He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword. It's no lie when I say I've seen that movie over 100 times.

Nowadays it's definitely The Shawshank Redemption, with Glory and Forrest Gump not too far behind.

Rocky II, its basicly the same as Rocky I ecxept he wins in the end, and being a kid when I first watched the movies, it was better than losing (of course now I realize the significance of the original Rocky, but its one of those things that you see as a child and forever sticks with you)

Nice to see a thread without hate as yet.

3)The Lion King- Barring Toy Story, this was THE animated movie for my generation. I I could quote the entire movie when I was 7. Still can.
2)The Dark Knight- I've been a Batman fan since I was 2, and this move reminded me why.
1) Pulp Fiction- cliched answer thou it may be, this film is the reason I now want to make movies. I find something new every time I watch it, and I look forward to viewing #137.

True Romance a 1993 American romantic crime film directed by Tony Scott and written by Quentin Tarantino. It stars Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette with an ensemble cast; Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer,Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Penn, Tom Sizemore Bronson Pinchot Michael Rapaport and James Gandolfini It is billed as a "love story", albeit an unconventional one, as the plot revolves around drugs and violence. Clarence Worley (Slater) and Alabama Whitman (Arquette) attempt to start a new life for themselves using cocaine stolen from Alabama's former pimp and find themselves on the run from the Mafia, ending in a dramatic double-crossing when the police get involved.

True Romance was a breakthrough of sorts for Tarantino. It was his first screenplay, and he had hoped to direct the movie himself, but ended up selling the script.

However, I've come to realize my favorite movie has changed.

Rocky is my all time favorite movie. I'm known for it. My walls are covered with Rocky Posters, rocky pictures, everything Rocky. While I am a big fan of all 6 Rocky films (Yes, even V) I set the first two apart as being the best, but if there is one that I can watch over and over it's 'Rocky'. Makes me feel better when I'm down, and it has an endless supply of life lessons, that I form my life around. I even wear similar clothes. Yes, thta's a bit excessive, but hey, it's my favorite movie.

Halloween. It introduced me to the horror genre, and how independent films can be made on the cheap and still have a lasting effect on cinema.

There are a few that do have a special place in my heart. I couldn't choose between them but one that does stick out at present is Eyes Wide Shut. I LOVE that movie. Everything about it to me is incredible. AND it introduced me to to Jocelyn Pook. AMAZING musician! She is is responible for the music in the "mansion scenes". That actually caught my attention more than what was going on on the screen. But yeah, an incredible movie.

Star Wars:A New Hope... has been since I was a little kid.. first movie I ever saw in the theatre and still the classic. Only The Crow and When Harry Met Sally come close IMHO.

The Dark Knight, Rocky, Empire Strikes Back and Lord of the Rings. The Dark Knight took everything good about Begins and made it almost flawless. Everyone dived into their roles and gave 100%. Aaron Eckhart and Heath Ledger are considered to be the two who took this movie to another level. It was the comic book movie that transcended the genre. Batman finally was dark and depressing. In the end Nolan had the balls to not give us a happy ending and to this day I love that decision. Because in the end Batman does not have happy endings. Rocky is a no brainer. The underdog from Philly who just wants to go the distance against a cocky champion who seems unbeatable. Two moments in this movie give me chills. One is before the fight when Rocky goes the empty arena, a real arena and not some dump or gym. He walks around and stares at the arena almost like to get ready for the fight. The other part is the near the end of the fight when he starts gaining an advantage against Apollo and the music kicks in and Creed realizes he has a fight on his hands. The other two movies are no brainers.

The Empire Strikes Back.

And an earlier commenter(s) named Army of Darnkess. I just saw that movie, and am a fan of Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2. I knew going in that the movie was supposed to be campy, but it went into cheese territory and just kinda sucked. Evil Dead 2 is the superior movie of the series, hands down.

my favorite film of all time would have to be Jaws, It's Wonderful Life, and To Kill A Mockingbird. Three of them got me into movies and one probably saved my life from being depressed and stuff. To Kill a mockingbird is so great to watch all due to Gregory Peck.

That's IMO

I know it's hard to choose a favorite. Many of you like me are avid film geeks. I love all sorts of movies, but very few stand out as truly exceptional to me. Those films that completely blew me away and changed the way I look at cinema. Honorable mentions are, Apocalypse Now, Kill Bill, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Evil Dead I & II, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Eraserhead.

Above and beyond any movie I've ever seen my number one choice is Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. Before seeing it I had never heard of it or Kubrick. I had heard the name and that it had a reputation as being a dangerous film. I remember renting it on VHS in around 2000 or 2001 watching it and being dumbfounded. This film was disturbing, it was bizzar, it was funny and it was unlike anything I had ever seen.

The first thing I did was call all my friends to tell them what I had just seen. Since then I've watched it a thousand times and I've seen it on the big screen 5 times at midnight showings and what not. I'll never tire of it and it will never be replaced as my all time favorite movie, because nothing else will ever affect me the way that movie did.
