411 Movies Feedback: What Movie Do You Hate That Most People Love?
Posted by Chad Webb on 06.27.2009

Judging movies is subjective. We all have different opinions, and no one is completely right or wrong. No matter how much we have in common with loved ones or friends, a movie could always come along where you feel one way and a friend feels the opposite. That raises 411's Movie Feedback question...

What movie do you hate that most people love?

For me, I could name a few, but one instantly springs to mind since I have had the most heated discussions about it. That movie is Donnie Darko, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Directed by Richard Kelly. We could be talking about either cut/version also. I remember watching it for the first time in college with a big group of people. I knew what I had seen was intriguing, but I also felt as if I had seen right through it whereas others were mesmerized. I saw the movie before I was hired at 411, so I never had the opportunity to write about it, but maybe one day. To this day, I know a lot of friends and family that enjoy it, and I never hesitate to engage in a healthy debate.

So what about you? What movie do you despise that other people love? How many times have argued about it? What was it like when you watched it the first time?

FORREST GUMP. That was one of the worst movies that I ever sat through. I was with a date so I couldn't even walk out of it. There were about 20 seconds in the whole movie that had any quality to it whatsoever. The rest was smarmy, self-indulgent crap.

Forrest Gump. The most overrated movie of all time. Most of the dialogue was Hallmark quality and, except for Tom Hanks, the acting was hammy. Gary Sinise was just AWFUL as Lt. Dan. But we're supposed to love this movie because it's about a sweet, good-natured retard.

Ha, I was gonna say Donnie Darko, too. Then I see Napoleon Dynamite as the first answer, and goddamn, that's a good choice, too. There's probably others, too, but those came to mind first.

Titanic is probably the most overrated piece of garbage ever, but I'm actually going to give the nod to either the Notebook or Twilight, just for giving women even more unrealistic ideals to hold men to.

The Shining. I know that some revere this as a great horror movie but I thought that it was freaking ridiculous and so did most of the crowd that was in the theater the night I saw it. Lost of heckling and people walking out.

The Horse Whisperer. A relative expounded this movie as wonderful and I called them half way through to say "Does this movie have an ending?" It dragged and dragged.

Titanic. What an overwrought piece of crap. The only redeeming value is Kate Winslet naked. But there's about a dozen movies where she's done that without the stupid ass melodrama.

The first Star Trek movie was a joke.

American Gangstar was great you f'n idioit. But I agree with transmformer it was as overrated as megan fox.

Superbad. I just don't get why everyone thought it was so great.

Spiderman 2. I don't see why people think it's the best superhero movie ever. I thought it was "only ok". (The main bad guy was only in the movie for like 20 minutes, and most of the dialog was laughably bad)

Dark Knight. OK, I don't really hate this one. But to me, it was a big victim of overhype. It was a good movie, but not exactly a great one.

As for the Star Wars series, I, too, would have added it to my list a few years ago. But one day, it suddenly clicked with me, and I've really enjoyed it since then.

However, I do love the Godfather. If you haven't watched it since you were a kid, watch it again. I'm not saying you will love it, but there were a lot of movies I hated as a kid that I love now.

Joining in on the Napoleon Dynamite hate. I got the humor, I just thought it wasn't funny and didn't care about it.

Also, Saving Private Ryan. That's right. The movie is very accurate, I've been often told, and I don't dispute that. But as well-acted as it is, I can't stand the "ACTION-ACTION-ACTION....whiiiiiiiiiiiiiine...." and rinse, lather, repeat tone of the film.

March of the Penguins. Yes, they're cute, they're penguins, awwwww. It's also very irritating as a documentary.

And two last ones, The Wizard of Oz and It's a Wonderful Life. Too many viewings have ruined these films for me and I avoid them at all costs.

Titanic is too easy, so mine is...

Boogie Nights.

I tried to like this movie (hey it's about porn come on what's not to like), but it is the most overrated movie of the 90's. Yes I get it's really about a disfunctional family and not really just about porn, but it still doesn't change the fact that all but 10mins (the drug deal scene is awesome with Sister Christian playing and the fireworks, that scene just works).

Others: A Clockwork Orange, Fear and Loathing, 2001

It's a tie between High School Musical 3 and The Simpsons Movie. HSM 3 was just an idiotic pile of mess that just served as idiot teen/tween bait for Disney and The Simpsons just felt like the last 3 years crammed into two hours.

The Star Wars movies. Maybe I don't hate them but they're waaaaaay over-hyped. Lightsaber duels are cool and all but other than that they suck. All of the fights seem weak, like the kind of lame monkey-flips and tosses you'd see on an old episode of Star Trek.

Shitty acting in the prequels and the inclusion of that piece-of-shit annoying C-3PO in every movie makes my blood boil.

Green lightsabers rule though.

Anything by Quentin Tarentino, but mostly Pulp Fiction. He just keeps saying how great he is over and over and guess what? Everyone started believing him! The guy is a douchebag and doesn't have a original thought in his body. Everything he does is a rip-off but he claims its a "homage" and again everyone believes him!

Braveheart, everyone creams their pants for this movie. It's long, way long and everyone who sees it finds it necessary to cop their idea of a "Scottish Accent". Telling people you don't like this movie is like saying one of your favorite hobbies is "violent racism".

Napoleon Dynamite is really competently made, it's a shame that the main character is someone so annoying that I was actually rooting for "the cool kids" to just beat the shit out of him. Because of that, it's a horrible movie.

Forrest Gump, though, because of all the money it made and because of the Oscars it won, is at the top of the list. I can say this with certainty because whenever I talk shit about it, my friends and family all look shocked by me, because they all love it. but to me, it's just one long hokey travelogue with the most lazy paint by numbers cliched soundtrack ever. The whole film hangs on the gimmick of Forrest running into every major American event of latter half of the 20th century. I can't fathom how this was considered better than Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction at the Oscars. It's infuriating.

Gigli.

I don't give a shit what people say about it. I think it's a damn good movie.

Wait, thought of a good one: Anchorman. I heard it from my friends, some family, magazines, etc. that it was a hilarious gut-buster. Not so. Horribly unfunny and one of the most overrated "comedies" (I use the term loosely) I've ever seen. What a piece of shit.

As a kid born in the early 80s, it might come as a suprise to know I never really cared for the Goonies. I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate it, but I just never saw the super appeal of the movie.

The first X-Men movie. Wolverine was weak.

Gotta agree with any Will Ferrell movie where he is the star. Old School was great. Anchorman, Step Brothers = TERRIBLE. Didnt laugh once. Dont get it.

Napoleon Dynamite. Everyone went on and on about how funny it was but I just found it mind-numbingly stupid.

Also the Star Wars trilogy. I don't know why, I just can't get into sci-fi films.

Any overrated movie with them no-talented ass fucks in the Brat Pack (especially Anthony Michael Homo, Molly Ringworm, Junk Nelson, and Andrew "Snitch" McCarthy). I don't care what the media and most people say. I can't fucking stand that fake ass Hollywood gang and their movies, they make me sick. Thank God the Crap Pack died after '88, it was killing the industry.

Signs. Huge bag of steaming dogs turd. I'm not entirely alone on this but it seems the majority think it's good for some reason.

I'd also say Unbreakable was mediocre and Sixth Sense is reasonable but overated, but I don't hate those. I hate signs with a passion. Almost as much as I hate Armageddon (but I think I'm with the majority on that).

Also Kill Bill and any Woody Allen movie. Really, any of his movies. I don't know why he's considered to be so great. I find him like a stuck record always repeating the same joke. Plus he sucks as an actor.

The thing I hate most about him is that for some reason everyone seems to think that I should especially like him because of my other movie tastes. I guess I feel about Woody Allen like Cartman feels about Family Guy. Lol.

As for Kill Bill, it had it's moments but I hate it because it only needed to be one film and he basically left in a films worth of self indulgence (mostly in part 2) which extended the whole thing. Still, it was far better then Deathproof which was like watching "The View" for most of it. I'm not against Tarintino in general though. Just those recently.

Far too many people seem to like 300, but I thought it was trash. Mindless nonsense with constant needless yelling, as well as barely any historically accurate material at all, but was loved due to the cinematography.

Wedding Crashers by far. Watched it three separate times and I still don't get why so many people reference it as one of the best comedies of the past few years. No real quotable lines. A completely unbelievable comedic actor as the lead (Owen Wilson). And a lot of forced jokes and humor.

Napolean Dynamite and its infinitie cheesiness is a close second with Dodgeball narrowly missing out the "this is supposed to be funny?" award (sorry Vince Vaughn; I guess your brilliance was born with Swingers and died with Old School).

If you're saying that Yamazaki has no taste, then you're saying that I have no taste. All he was doing was just agreeing with me, that's it. I'm sorry if you don't like Yamazaki's language, but saying that people who can't stand the Brat Pack (like me) have no taste is just uncalled for.

I like movies like Rumble Fish & Breakin'. So tell me, do you hate those movies?
