411 Movies Feedback: What is the Most Underrated Movie?
Posted by Chad Webb on 07.11.2009
The movie-zone feedback continues. Share your opinion with 411!
Many films come and go each year, but not all of them are destined to be revered classics by casual viewers and critics alike. Many writers have favorite films that others have not heard of, while regular audiences cherish certain films that might not have gotten the praise they should over the years. That raises 411's Movie Feedback question...
What is the most underrated movie of all-time?
For me, it would have to be Blow, directed by Ted Demme, starring Penelope Cruz and Johnny Depp. As far as drug flicks go, this is my favorite for sure. Most people hold Scarface close to their hearts, but Demme's masterpiece had it all, yet was based on a true story. Too many people have not seen the film, or simply dismissed it as ordinary. Depp was well-known, but this role as George Jung helped make him a superstar in the eyes of many. It has a great soundtrack, sharp script, and superb performances by all. If you haven't seen it, give it a chance.
So what about you? What is the name of the movie you think is most underrated? Have you gotten into many debates about it?

man on fire...and no debates that i can think of...
Posted By: Guest#2447 (Guest) on July 11, 2009 at 01:31 AM
While not perfect, I'd have to go with Speed Racer or The Blair Witch Project!Greate topic!
Posted By: Pat (Guest) on July 11, 2009 at 01:36 AM
I gotta agree..everyone bows to Scarface but that was a larger than life caricature...Blow was everything Scarface was but it had real characters, real emotion and relatable themes...one of the only movies that makes me cry and expect a happier ending every time I see it, which is in the upper twenties-mid thirties of viewing counts.

Batman & Robin. People just didnt get it. There were so many subtle messages, and deep meaning to the film. For instance Mr Freezze experienced tragedy with the illness of his wife and in resulted in him becoming a "cold" person emotionally and physically (such symbolism). Poison Ivy was meant to show a reverse on the way humans are polluting wildlife and killing plants. Since it was a plant lady exterminating humans. It really makes you take a step back and think. The bat nipples were meant to demonstrate the more human side of the dark knight since robin became his partner. It is an expression of how his relationship with his new partner has relieved him of the darkness in his life and brought him into the light. Mr Freeze creating a gun that freezes an entire city, a commentary how all people experience times when their hearts are frozen. And batman using a telescope to revert the sun back to Gotham to thaw all the people is a testament to how love (which is symbolized by the sun) can heal anybody who is cold hearted. The film even delved into our societys economic values. The bat credit card obviously symbolized capitalism. It is probably one of the most perfectly made films of our generation. I am in awe every time i see have the honor of getting the chance to view it. Thank you Joel Schumacher

Also - Trainspotting By Danny Boyle .

Fear and Loathing, Boondock Saints=Overrated
And who underrates American Beauty?
Posted By: Guest#6790 (Guest) on July 11, 2009 at 04:04 AM
Donnie Darko - it's rated enough that now it is a cult classic, but i think it deserved more mainstream love first time round.
Great plot, great script, great acting.

I think the King Kong remake by Peter Jackson deserved more praises, now people are complaining about the length and the CGI and so on. I saw it in a movietheatre and I loved it, still do. You could see how much Jackson loved the original and crafted the story into a whole new, but still familiar, tale.

Gone Baby Gone (Ben Affleck needs to quit acting and keep directing) and Let the Right One In. Also, I saw Control a few nights ago and I think it turned me into a Joy Division fan. As for comedy, License to Drive starring the two Coreys from '86. Without A Clue from that time is also great.

LmAo @ "J.J.T" for his comments about Batman & Robin!
One of the more underrated films that come to mind would be either "Requiem for a Dream" (2000) or "Tombstone" (1993). I'm always surprised @ how many people have never seen either of these movies!

First off, who in the blue hell underrates Boondock Saints? It's a GREAT movie.
But for me, and this gets me a lot of crap...I choose The Princess Bride. Classic love story, great characters, great comedy, and one of the most classic lines in ALL of moviedom: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
Posted By: Kenny (Guest) on July 11, 2009 at 12:19 PM
Under J.J.T.s thinking I would have to nominate the following
Caddyshack 2
Jaws 4
Manos, the hands of fate
Ishtar
Battlefield Earth

I've seen Boondock Saints and it's not too bad, though I'd probably say that it's overrated far more than underrated.
Posted By: Zingy (Guest) on July 11, 2009 at 01:05 PM
Cheerleader Ninjas. Everybody needs to go to Hollywood Video (it's the only place I can find that carries it) and rent this.
Forgot Plan 9 From Outer Space. Cheerleader Ninjas is the best/worst movie I've ever seen with a similar ridiculous, vague plot and this has titties.

Brazil: It's like 1984, but pretty funny
Tomorrow Never Dies: Another film with Jonathan Pryce that was a way better Bond movie than most give it credit for
The Negotiator: A pretty awesome action movie that seems to have been somewhat forgotten
Slackers: Words cannot describe why I think it's one of the funniest comedies of this decade
Posted By: Taylor (Guest) on July 11, 2009 at 01:37 PM
Joke pick: Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, starring Lorenzo Lamas and Debbie Gibson. Instant classic!
Serious pick: David Mamet's Redbelt. One of the best movies of 2008 that no one saw but me (and all the people I've loaned the DVD to).

First of, FUCK the boondock saints. It's one of the worst fucking movies of all time next to Forrest Gump and dances with wolves. It's a non believable style over substanced clusterfuck.
And second, I'd say Bottle Rocket or Barton Fink. They don't get talked about enough.

in my opinion the greatest movie of all time was the departed a superstar cast and a unbelievable story with lots of irony it has to be the departed a masterpeice jack Nicholson in that movie was unreal as the mob boss

For overall acting quality, The Dark Knight.
People payed so much attention to Heath that they completely disregard the phenomenal A-List cast that surrounded him. Without him, it still would have been a great film, just not quite as awesome.
Overall, though, Death Becomes Her is my pick.

Night of the Living Dead. Yes, it's considered one of the greatest and most influential horror movies of all time, but it should be considered outside of the horror genre as well. Social commentary, a strong black lead at a time (and especially in a place) where that kind of thing just wasn't done, and most of all - ZOMBIES.

Stranger Than Fiction
It's a very well acvted movie all the way around. Very well written. Very entertaining. And I would go so far as to suggest that if the lead was played exactly as well by a Will Smith or a Tom Hanks, there would've been Oscar buzz.
Most importantly, I've told dozens of people I knwo to watch this film becuase it WILL affect the way you think baout life in some way. Every single one of them have confirmed this afterwards.
It's a great moive and one of my favorites of alll time.

GANGSTER MOVIE:THE VELACHI PAPERS starring Charles Bronson is actually based on true events and is really a gem. Used to come on Encore all the time.
ANIMATED MOVIE: TRANSFORMERS THE MOVIE...it really was very good for its time
COMEDY: THE KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE...Before Airplane or anything else
DRAMA: PEYTON PLACE...it was kinda melodramatic but if you redid it today as a serious period piece I think y ou can get some mileage out of the store because the theme still relate to women.
HORROR: SHOWGIRLS...I watched it at 15 and with all the naked women I STILL didn't like it. J/K the movie is hilarious on VH!
HORROR: DOLLS...I think I haven't seen it in years but I used to love it when i was a kid...I actually DVR'd it the other day...
SCI-FI: EVENT HORIZON. Seriously that movie freaked me out to the point I won't allow it in my home...

The 25th Hour -- Spike Lee's gutsiest movie. Only he could have put together so reverent yet brash.
The Shawshank Redemption -- If ANYONE had seen this film prior to the Oscars, there's no way in Hell Forrest Gump wins in '94.
The Conversation -- Screw Godfather, Part II. This is Coppola's best movie. A paranoid Gene Hackman always makes for a good time.
Gross Pointe Blank -- Best Dark Comedy of the 90's. Dan Aykroyd is awesome in this.

Memento and the Prestige. Two genius movies by the Dark Knight director (Christopher Nolan) and nobody seems to have ever heard of them.
And to whoever said Fear and Loathing, I don't know what circles you are a part of, but nobody I know can shut up about that movie. It's popular as all hell in the DC area, and with me as well.
And American Beauty? It won best picture... I think that disqualifies it as underrated. Awesome freaking movie though. One of my favorites.

The Music Box, the one from 1989 based loosely on John Demjanjuk. A great film that is never talked about.

Of the movies that were mentioned so far, The Princess Bride, Thank You For Smoking, and Serenity all have to be up there.
THE most underrated movie of all time (to me at least) is The New Guy. That movie is pure funny, and all the cast does a great job (even lead actor DJ Qualls). For some reason, the movie never caught on like a lot of "teen comedies".. but it should have!
Posted By: Blackbird 13 (Guest) on July 12, 2009 at 02:47 PM
I'm watching it right now on comedy central, Life with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. My criteria for underrated is a movie that gets less than 3 stars by the critics.

I have never seen so many ridiculous responses to a simple prompt.
American Beauty and the Departed have been suggested. Both are Oscar nominees and/or winners!
Fear and Loathing and the Boondock Saints, while great, have been loved into the ground.
You guys need to try to develop a better operational definition of "underrated."

Gone Baby Gone..better than No Country, There Will Be Blood, or anything recent.
Posted By: Guest#2928 (Guest) on July 12, 2009 at 05:02 PM
Two movies I've always felt were underrated are "The Fountain" and "Pan's Labyrinth". The former was just brilliant, while the latter deserved a Best Picture nomination for certain.
Posted By: Mattheapar (Guest) on July 12, 2009 at 05:33 PM
A lot of good choices so far. I totally agree several of the choices. Shawshank, Crow, Departed aren't under rated, those movies got all kinds of love. My choices are the greatest B movie ever "Stonecold" starring the Boz. And the best movie no one's ever seen "Blood in blood out. Bound by honor", based on the story of the rise of the Mexican prison gangs in Cali. Both are underloved classics for different reasons.

I agree that too many people seem to not understand what "underrated" means, as they nominate films that are viewed as classics by many.
I think a better word for this would be "overlooked," meaning a film that doesn't get the attention it should. Using that word and criteria, here are a couple of films that I think belong here:
Fear of a Black Hat: The DVD really shines light on why this film didn't get the attention it did. In short, it was released after a Christ Rock film dealing with the same subject matter (rap) bombed at the box office, and thus Fear didn't get the attention it should have. However, it is easily one of the funniest films I own.
The Core: This came & went sometime in the early 2000's, but it's a pretty solid disaster pic. Essentially, it's Armaggedon in inverse; instead of going to the skies to save the earth, the heroes have to go into the core of the earth. Pretty fun to watch, even if you can't take it seriously.
Runaway Jury: By the time it was released, John Grisham had lost steam as a box office attraction, but this is one of the better adaptations.
The Producers: No, I'm not talking about the classic comedy, but the recent musical version. It's got a lot of catchy tunes, a great cast, and is fun to check out.
The Quick and The Dead: Look at the cast; Sharon Stone, Leonard DiCaprio, Gene Hackman, Russel Crowe. Pretty big names, even if some of them weren't that big at the time. Unfortunately, it came in the wake of Unforgiven (which also had Hackman as a key villian), the dramatic weight of which wound up overshadowing this piece of fluff.
Last Action Hero: A film that was too smart for its own good, this would up being a brilliant satire of the cliches of the action genre.
Speed 2: Although the replacement for Keannau Reeves managed to be even more wooden than Reeves, this was still a pretty fun action film.
Under Siege 2: I actually like this one better than the original, even if the villians couldn't hold a candle to Tommy Lee Jones.

Breakin': It just kills me when the media and most people barely talk about it. It brought breakdancing to the mainstream. It was the #1 movie on the first weekend of May 1984, yet the media (VH1, MTV, E!) doesn't wanna acknowledge it like it doesn't exist. If it wasn't for Breakin', breakdancing would only be popular to the people in New York City. Breakin is the greatest dance movie of all-time.
Rumble Fish: One of the realest teen movies of the 80s, starring some of the best actors of all-time (Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke, and Laurence Fishburne). What pisses me off is that the mainstream media continues to overlook this movie, as they never gave a damn about the stars of the movie. Despite being an 80s teen movie, RF is by no means a brat pack movie (which is a good thing). The actors gave a strong peformance in this movie, of course the pop culture media doesn't see it that way.
Little Darlings: A great 80s teen film which had been overshadowed by the Crap Pack films since the mid/late 80s. Most people would go on to say that 16 Candles is better than LD, or LD is not an 80s movie like 16C, or LD is a 16C rip-off(when LD was made long before 16C). What alot of senseless Crap Pack fans don't get is that the Brat Pack did not exist when Little Darlings was made in 1980. Without movies like this, Fast Times, RF, and Vacation (written by John Hughes), there would be no Crap Pack, and the pop culture media knows that.
Righteous Kill: I think RK is a great movie with a great cast, although it isn't as great as The Godfather movies, Scarface, or Goodfellas. I think the media is being way too critical on this movie. The worst thing about it is that people like to downtalk it because it has 50 Cent(who had a small part) in it. Sadly, it's one of the most underrated and overlooked movies of last year, thanks to all the people who are against 50 Cent.
