411 Movies Feedback: What is the Best Sequel?
Posted by Chad Webb on 07.18.2009
The movie-zone feedback continues. Share your opinion with 411!
With Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in theaters this week, it marks the sixth installment of that series. Sequels have always been popular in Hollywood, and this year has certainly seen its share of them. It seems harder and harder to make a satisfactory follow-up or sequel these days. That raises 411's Movie Feedback question...
What is the best sequel ever made?
For me, it would have to be The Godfather Part II, the 1974 masterpiece directed by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Al Pacino, but featuring Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Robert De Niro, and John Cazale is brilliant performances. A few sequels come close, but no second installment has ever reached the level of mastery that this did. It was a more ambitoous production in that Coppola and company told a pair of completely disconnected stories, but did so in parallel. It is one of the ultimate gangster movies, and still stands as one of the greatest films fo all-time. Every aspect of this motion picture is brilliant, yet it expands upon the original with depth, detail, and faithfulness that is so rarely seen. Even at over 3 hours, it is never boring for a second.
So what about you? What is the best sequel ever made in your opinion? Why do you think so? How strong of a case can you make for your pick?

im still loving the dark knight... ive loved batman since my childhood and that hasnt changed. the greatness of that movie only helps
Posted By: Jcon (Guest) on July 17, 2009 at 11:58 PM
Given my love of cheesy movies, I'd say "Army of Darkness". Realistically, I know it isn't all that great, though.
Before the Star Wars PT came out, I'd expect to see a lot of "Empire Strikes Back" votes. Maybe not so much anymore.
Posted By: luna (Guest) on July 18, 2009 at 12:04 AM
Hard to argue with Godfather Part II. The only other comparable sequel that I can think of is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, but of course some people consider it a prequel.

Definitely Godfather II, which is my favorite of ANY movies.
Posted By: The REAL MP (Guest) on July 18, 2009 at 12:18 AM
In mainstream films, the sequel that improved the most upon the first installment was Spider-Man 2. Great movie.
Oddly enough, the WORST sequel ever made was Spider-Man 3.
Posted By: KanyonKreist (Guest) on July 18, 2009 at 12:19 AM
Godfather II. Any other answer is just ridiculous.

It's a toss-up between SpiderMan 2 and Terminator 2. Both original movies were overrated in my opinion but the sequels were fantastic.

Godfather part II and its not even close. End of debate!
Posted By: Guest#1137 (Guest) on July 18, 2009 at 03:30 AM
I'm tossing X-Men 2 in there.
Posted By: Weeee Bleep (Guest) on July 18, 2009 at 03:31 AM
empire strikes back and dark knight are excellent, but for me it has to be lethal weapon 2! It surpasses the original as the plot was more detailed and the action was better. It also gave us a new star for the franchise (who got equal billing in the next 2 movies)in joe pesci. I know I'm going back 20 years but I can still enjoy that movie! It's even quted in Family guy. Getting all nostalgic now! (Also, American Ninja 4 was good!)

Godfather 2
The Dark Knight
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Prequel?)
T2
Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi
Toy Story 2
X-Men 2
And most importantly...

The Dark Knight
The Godfather, Part II

A good sequel should satisfy you while not necessarily giving you what you expected. All of these movies do that.

Terminator 2... the Godfather II, I don't know... it insists upon itself.

I still think godfather 1 and terminator 1 are superior flicks. The dark knight is the most vivid example of a sequel that outclasses the original in every single aspect without much to any debate.

Obviously, the big ones are Godfather Part II and Dark Knight.
I would also include Blade II. The first Blade was a decent waste of an hour and a half or so, but when Del Toro took on the franchise he made the best film in the series and introduced some fantastic concepts. Not the greatest movie ever by any stretch, but it is one of the best pure sequels by comparison to the original.

And if you aren't picking Godfather II you don't get it, and you never will.
And to all of you that said you think I was a better movie, you are correct, but that wasn't the question.
And the sequel WON ACADEMY AWARDS... The "gold standard" if you will...
Al Pacino sits at the right hand of Robert Dinero - no contest.

Hey now. Robocop 2, Predator 2 and Return to Oz are a shit-pale follow up to their original films, but I wouldn't call 'em BAD by any stretch of the imagination. Not when you've got AVP and Robocop 3 waiting in the wings for the first two.
But on-topic, I'd say Aliens, Toy Story 2 and Evil Dead 2. I've also got a soft spot for Friday the 13th 2, though including it in a "best" list for anything is a reach.

Even tho Godfather 2 and Terminator 2 are amazing films, no sequel is greater then Empire Strikes Back.
Empire has so many things that makes it superior from it's downer endings, lovable characters and let's not forget the introduction of Yoda, but to top it all off Empire has one of or if not the greatest plot twist in the the history of film along side one of the most iconic songs in film film history "The Imperial March"
Posted By: The Greg (Guest) on July 18, 2009 at 03:44 PM
The best is hands down The Godfather Part 2.
Honorable mention goes to Empire and Dark Knight.

While not the best ever, I do appreciate the reader who offered up Gremlins 2, which is a wonderful sendup of the original film.
As far as the best sequel, Terminator 2 has everything else beat. It has a great combination of special effects, and an intriguing plot that nicely builds upon the original without completely destroying it.

For me... it's a trifecta of greatness.
Godfather 2, The Empire Strikes Back and The Dark Knight. The 3 greatest sequels of ALL time.

Godfather II
The Dark Knight
A lot of people say The Good, The Band & The Ugly, and while it was truly epic, I personally think For a Few Dollars More was the better sequel in that series.
The Empire Strikes Back - Proved that audiences will respond well when the bad guys win.
Karate Kid II - how great was it when he realized that stupid kick wouldn't work in real life!!
X-Men 2 - started off at a blistering pace, and held attention the entire way through
Superman II - Omit the stupid plastic "S" towards the end, and it's nearly flawless!
T2 - took an already good idea, and turned it into a standard for future blockbusters to follow.

Austin Powers 2- Way funnier than the first.
Die Hard 2- Had most of the original cast and the bad guy actually kicks McClain's ass.
Naked Gun 2 1/2- Funnier than the original.
Clerks 2- Better than the original but Jay and Silent Bob were sober.

"The Dark Knight=Most overrated movie since Titanic."
What a load of Bullshit!
It's not even the most overrated comic book film to come out that year.
Iron Man had WAY more undeserved praise.
