[Movies] MechWarrior May Come To The Big Screen
Posted by Larry Csonka on 09.30.2009

According to joystiq.com, former Disney chief Michael Eisner's production house, The Tornate Company, have purchased the film rights for MechWarrior. Years ago Dean Devlin (producer of Godzilla) was developing the project, but nothing ever came from it. Joystiq.com also reports that Michael Gordon (writer of G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra ) has been hired to write the script. Earlier this summer it was announced that the MechWarrior videogame franchise would be getting a reboot through Smith and Tinker and Piranha studios.

According to IGN, there could be an issue between Piranha and Harmony Gold - the co-owners of the Robotech games, over trademark issues. IGN reports that Harmony Gold sent cease-and-desist letters, requesting them to stop hosting the trailer for the latest MechWarrior game, claiming the 'bots were somewhat similar to those in Robotech. With disputes already happening on such a small level, the feeling is that it could slow a movie adaptation.

BattleTech Mech designs were a blatant rip-off from Robotech (Macross) designs ,especially the phoenix, wasp, marauder ones. But that was at a time where nobody knew Anime in the west and nobody knew Roleplaying/Wargaming period. So they got away with it.

Now both is popular. They had that battle before and i am pretty sure the BattleTech makers (back then it was FASA) settled it. But since FASA went bankrupt, i am not sure about the rights to the designs.

But considering that Robotech is basically just an amalgamation of three different Anime anyway, i wonder where the rights really lie?

In any case, depending on which storyline the movie would take, they could take out the few offending desings (it really are just a half dozen or so) and just use Clan variants or such. No hassle at all.

Please let someone good be in charge of this. And make it like a real war film, not an "adveture movie."

Go with the Clan Invasion, because they make a cool adversary. Stick with the standard Battletech sory line, young royal family memember foreced to flee his homeworld when Clans invade and then has to form a resistance to take it back. Keep it simple, keep it real, keep it gritty and NO FORCED LOVE STORY!!!!!
