411 Movies Feedback: What is the Best Sports Film?
Posted by Chad Webb on 10.10.2009

With The Damned United starring Michael Sheen getting released this weekend, I started thinking about some of my favorite sports films. That raises 411's Movie Feedback question...

What is the Best Sports Film of All-Time?

For me, this answer is simple. One of the first films I can remember my father showing me was an installment of the Rocky franchise. Now I have seen every one of the films many many times. In my mind, it would be difficult for any sports film to top that first achievement. From the iconic score by Bill Conti to the poignant turn from Sylvester Stallone, the movie is as great today as it always was. Field of Dreams and Rudy would be close behind that.

So what is your opinion? What is your favorite sports film? Will The Damned United stand a chance at being one of the greats?

Million Dollar Baby is the best movie about boxing, followed closely by Raging Bull... But I guess Rocky is still my favorite.

Escape to Victory (Or Victory in the US).. it's a Soccer film about escaping Nazi Germany through the power of Football! It has Sly Stallone, Pele, Michael Caine and other legendary footballers involved.

Wouldn't expect the US audience to have heard or appreciate it.

I'd put the original Rocky film second.

Any Given Sunday was pretty awesome too.

Breaking Away. Yes, a movie about cycling, but the motivation can be translated to any type of athlete. Or to anyone desperate to be Italian.

Posted By: lh (Guest)  on October 10, 2009 at 01:55 PM

Rudy???? Are you kidding? He didn't even REMOTLEY RESEMBLE the real 'Rudy'. That caveman looking 5 foot nothing punk in EVERY FRIGGIN SCENE, with the same expression, until the very end where he finally gets to play in a game his team is winning by 400 points and tackle someone?? The movie was horrific.

Good sports movie = Necessary Roughness.

I agree with the Rocky Franchise....However It took a few tries to get everyone to enjoy it fully. I believe the greatest sports film of all time is 3 The Dale Earnhardt Story, Barry Pepper was absolutely incredible It had the actors the raw emotion and common exaggeration. But in a close 2nd The sandlot lol J/k. Well whats your opinion?

Rocky. Anybody who says different is wrong. Not only is Rocky the greatest sports movie of all time. It's the greatest drama of all time. It's the greatest movie of all time.

North Dallas Forty and Any Given Sunday.

You can watch "The Replacements" and it's ok until Keanu says "Gentlemen, it was a pleasure sharing the field of battle with you" in that surfer dude voice.

And really - baseball or basketball movies suck.

You could make a case for Slap Shot.

But other than football movies, all the others are for Pussys

Geez, that's a tough one. I'd go with:

1. The Program
2. Remember The Titans
3. Rocky 4
4. Major League 2
5. Major League
6. Any Given Sunday
7. Bloodsport
8. Karate Kid
9. Karate Kid 2
10. Redbelt

For me its movies like "Pride of the Yankees" Lou Gehrig was what we all want our heroes to be like. Mild Mannered, go out there and get it done.

"Brian's Song" STILL makes me cry. I'm talking the Caan/Williams version, not that abortion that came out not so long ago

"Bull Durham" is one of my guilty pleasures. I will even sit thru the edited for TV version.

There are SO many great ones to chose from.... but in my heart of hearts.... The greatest sports movie of all time HAS to be "Days of Thunder" LMAO! I KID!
I go thru phases, right now "We are Marshall" is at the top, just because of what happened to that community and how they managed to pull themsleves out of the darkness and back into the light

Can't believe there's been so little Bull Durham love on here, definately my favorite baseball movie. Slapshot takes it for Hockey movies. Football is for sure the deepest category as far as sports movies goes, Remember the Titans, Any Given Sunday, and Friday Night Lights would be the best of them for me.

I am saying rocky all the way but honestly i love the latest more than i did the first. Granted without all the previous balboa wouldn't have meant so much but man watching him cry for adrian hits ya man. I must say though a movie I think is missing alot of love MIGHTY FUCKING DUCKS MAN!!!! one or two. I know its a kids movie but honestly that put hockey into some kids heads who had never even thought about it before and the fact that as the movie happened it was teaching basic fundamentals to the kids who watched awesome.
