[Movies] JJ Abrams Talks Superman Posted by Larry Csonka on 10.27.2009
Would you be interested in an Abrams helmed Superman?
- MTV recently spoke with JJ Abrams about the Superman franchise, here are the highlights…
Has anyone approached him to do a film?: "No one has talked to me about it. Obviously I'm sure Warner Brothers has a plan for what they want to do."
On the script he wrote: "Writing that script was a long process," he explained. "It was a very passionate character for me. As a kid growing up it meant a lot to me. It would be wonderful and fun to see that brought back. I don't know what Warners is thinking or what their plan is. It would be a blast."
On the script he wants to see produced: "That version of the movie—the one that was reviewed and vilified—was actually not the latest draft we had at the time and we worked on it well after that. I do think there's a version of that movie that could be really fun to see," said Abrams. "You never really know. Everything happens for a reason."
JJ Abrams made me care about Star Trek, a franchise I couldn't have cared less about. That said, I would absolutely love to see him given the freedom to craft a story for a character that I've got a long-standing emotional attachment to (like Superman).

Well, he did an amazing job rebooting Star Trek, so why not? Can't do any worse that Singer.

I'd be first in line. I too was never a trekkie, but Abrams made me care about that franchise.. I love Superman, so I'd definitely be interested in his take on the lore.

Abrams made a Star Trek movie for people who hate Star Trek (like me). I don't hate Superman, but I've always found the character rather dull when compared to superheroes like Batman, Spider-Man & the X-Men, so I'd like to see Abrams take a crack at him.

I never like Star Trek. Now I do because he made it great.
I've always liked Superman, but hate Brian Singer. He sux balls as a director. He never cares about learning anything about the subject he's shooting. At least JJ loves Superman. Can't see how he'd mess it up. I say give it to him.

Have you ever read Abrams' Superman script?
Lex Luthor is from Krypton and he's a goverment agent/MiB. He and Superman battle it out in Matrix Fu.
Fuck him. Keep him far, far away from Superman, please.

No thanks. I can do without seeing the Man of Steel duke it out with a giant spider, which is what surely would happen with this clown Abrams at the helm. I swear: I hear so much hype about the mysteries of Lost, but any student of film should know that the whole things gonna wrap up with a giant spider attacking the island, it's Abrams' hallmark.

his script was crazy...it started off in war between planets...earth was pretty much a mess as a result of the war. When I read it I figured it wasn't made because of the cost.
I wouldn't mind seeing what he comes up with. Most comic movies tend to stick to the comics. I think fresh ideas are needed for franchises like Superman and Batman. I'd really like to watch superman die on screen.

I am an Abrams fan, but Hell NO.
He might say the script that leaked out wasn't the final one but that script was so bad that it would be impossible to fix it no matter how many drafts happened.
If he said above that he completely threw that one in the garbage and started over? Maybe I'd say yes. But the fact that he's still planning on using that plot in any way, shape or form is a 100% guarantee that this would be the worst comic book movie ever made.
What he wrote before was an absolute abortion and was wrong in every single way. It was a complete insult to anybody who is a Superman fan. And maybe even worse is that it was just another Superman origin story. We all know the origin of Superman, can we please just get past that and get a big ass, balls out action film for Superman? One where Superman does not know kung fu.
Abrams would be perfect for a lot of movies, not this one. No way, no how.

Abrams is about as stable and trustworthy (in terms of producing consistent quality) as anyone these days. He'd surely be a fine choice.

You want to do a good Superman story?
A good superhero story in general that be viewed as a "real" film as well?
KINGDOM FUCKING COME!

"the whole things gonna wrap up with a giant spider attacking the island, it's Abrams' hallmark."

make doomsday into a film. A big ass action one. If you want something more true to the comics, read the comics.

Great action movie filmmaker, I'd love to see that. A great, big, dumb comic book movie, with kung fu. Sure, why not!?
If you want to read lame comic books, children, read those.

No more origin stories/reboots pleeeease. Just give us Smallville the movie: Metropolis. There. A large following and an established backstory. It would be perfect. Erica Durance owns Lois Lane, she is so much better than Kate Bosworth.
And no offense to Brandon Routh, to young people of these times, Tom Welling is the Superman of this generation after C. Reeves.

Pick up a copy of the current Superman:Secret Origin to see how it should be done!
