[Movies] JJ Abrams Talks Star Trek 2 And Khan
Posted by Larry Csonka on 11.03.2009

MTV recently spoke with JJ Abrams, regarding Star Trek 2 and the possibility of Khan making an appearance. Here is what he had to say…

"Now that we are in a parallel existence with what fans of the original series love so much, we could introduce any number of characters, settings, references and situations that the original series introduced. Dealing with Khan would certainly be a challenge, but we had an equal challenge in finding our crew of the Enterprise. While I don't want to approach the second film as a remake of episodes we've seen in the past, and I don't think any of the other writers or producers are interested in just rehashing or throwing characters in for the sake of it... Khan is certainly the most obvious one in the history of the series for me... I do think that there are... nothing is off limits in terms of what we're discussing."

I wonder if they use Klingons will they be the whacked out ones from the Original series.

I had a discussion about the second Star Trek on a forum recently.

Personally, I'd love to see The Gorn return. Someone else mentioned Tholians. Someone else mentioned Harry Mudd. So, we came to a logical conclusion:

A war between The Gorn and The Tholians, with Harry Mudd selling weapons to both sides for huge profit.

I remember thinking that some of the debris from the ship they exploded at the end could be used as an excuse to bring a basic version of the Borg into the story much earlier. Seeing the original crew deal with them would certainly be better than most of the movies the original original cast were in.

in fairness, enterprise explains why the klingons had no ridges at that period in time!

Of course he's considering Khan. The studio executives obviously would push him to get Khan into the mix.

It sounds to me like he's saying "No, we're not considering Khan because we don't want to rehash that story, but the studios are getting on my ass about it, so if it turns out to be Khan and this ruins things, I tried my best not to screw with that."

I would absolutely be up for some Borg action. It would be great to see the new breed against the Borg. I read an anime recently that had the original crew against the Borg that was pretty good.

The thing with Khan is that to get the emotion which fired ST2:TWoK, you need the premise from the original series episode, which has been scrapped in the new timeline.

If they want to bring Khan back, they need to do some groundwork in ST:II for a full Khan movie in ST:III or IV.

IMHO, the chaotic aftermath of Nero's rampage (destroying Vulcan is no small deal) should offer enough variables to make a compelling ST:II, with the Romulands, Andorans, semi-ridge Klingons etc. beginning to create this timeline's individual mythology while perhaps adding some selected parts of the original timeline (Khan, Tribbles.)

As they have shown, it IS possible to tell a new story while appeasing the spirits of the old. I LOVED Star trek this year, and can't wait to see where it goes next...

They should bring Khan back as one of the starfleet officers, during the course of the movie they would have him with kirk being buddies, then something happens closer to the end where khan becomes his enemy...final shot would be kirk doing his "space speech" and khan having his own speech, and have them interlaced with eachother, so one plays off the other....and then the end would have khan saying..."kirk, i am khan and you will feel my wrath" instant orgasm

THE FRANZ

Um, you can't have Khan "be a starfleet officer". In the original Khan episode, Khan and his crew were in stasis on the Botany Bay until Kirk and the Enterprise found them. Yes, we're in an alternate timeline now .. but the split happened AFTER Khan was sent out in his ship. So for Khan to be anywhere, someone has to find the Botany Bay first and revive the crew and Khan.

I am at a loss here. The latest Star Trek film was simply pathetic. The story line was stupid. Time travel is the last refuge for the uncreative.
