[Movies] Pullman Talks Independence Day 2
Posted by Ashish on 11.17.2009

Bill Pullman, who played President Thomas J. Whitmore in the original Independence Day, isn't sure if he will be back for the rumored sequel. He told BlogTalkRadio.com's Let's Do Lunch! (via Star) the following...

"Somebody has been sending me links to conversations Roland's (the director) been having about it and what ideas they have for it. I haven't talked to him about it but it's a complicated legal thing getting involved with creative control and it's an expensive movie."

"I don't know if it's a role I'll revisit, because, in term limits, I think we've gone beyond 12 years - but maybe there's some side of it that he's angling. He works with writers and they try to find the best idea and I've heard a couple of scenarios that would include me and some that wouldn't so I can't control it so I don't think about it."

Damn, Pullman was great in the first one, don't tell me you didn't love his big speech near the end

He should come back. But I'm not sure if he should have a big role in the next movie. He's pretty old now.

He should come back as...... LONESTAR! This time the aliens are Spaceballs!

The first movie was fun. No need for a sequel.

The term limit thing doesn't matter, you know he must have been ultra-popular, maybe he got re-elected several times over while the US and the rest of the world rebuilt (I recall several people I knew of voting for Bush in the 2004 elections based on the fact they didn't want to throw someone new into the white house during a time of war, I could see a similar situation happening in a time of rebuilding).

I'm sure a film about something as absurd as aliens blowing up the world can come up with a creative excuse to get around those term limits.

I agree. Bill Pullman is money talent-wise. I won't see the rumored sequel without him.

"Term limits"??? Are you kidding??? This is a, BIG budget BIG action, movie and thus the audience would/should NOT be looking for realism. Just say his term was indefinitely extended do to circumstances like interplanetary war. Problem solved. Now get your ass in there Pullman.

He doesn't necessarily have to be president, though: the new president could be some indecisive weakling who can't take control, leading to The Big Ass Hero Pullman to get back in charge.

Story-wise, it would make more sense to have Will Smith's character be President. Remember, Whitmore's character was a former Gulf War pilot, so Smith's character would also have been elected based on being a war hero. Maybe Jeff Goldbum's character is his vice president (or the new head of Area 51). Pullman could still appear. He's now a popular ex-President, making speeches, written his biography, etc. Maybe he made a documentary about the aliens, and won an Oscar and Nobel Peach Prize (ala Al Gore).

While I love the Spaceballs jokes (and the movie for that matter)...

...let's not also forget he was awesome in The Zero Effect

Pullman was as wooden as a cigar store indian in that movie. He makes Keanu Reeves look like Errol Flynn.

He's a very inconsistent actor, but frequently uninspiring.

WHat term limits there wasn't even a Washington DC after the destruction in the movie and most of the country and world was destroyed in the attacks.

Term limits a concern since it's been over 12 years? Ummmm...that's a concern after 8 years, and that's only if the movie was at the start of his term.

That said, the country was destroyed, and civilization nearly ended. Very easy to explain why he's still president. I'd bring him back, have the new/returning aliens kill him off, and have Will Smith end the movie as president.

This is why Evil will triumph. Because Good is Stupid.

Term limits? The world was destroyed! There's a new form of government, buddy. You're probably a dictator now.
