411 Box Office Report: Avatar Tops Sherlock Holmes
Posted by Ashish on 12.27.2009

James Cameron has another massive hit on his hands. Avatar continued to soar at the holiday box office this weekend, earning $75 million to raise its domestic total to $212.2 million, good for the second biggest second weekend ever (behind The Dark Knight which earned $75.1 million in its second weekend). The film had the highest per theater average of any in the top 10 with $21,701 per theater. The film is thus far performing well above expectations. The film managed to not really drop at all from its first weekend to its second, a very rare accomplishment for blockbusters which usually drop 50% or more in its second weekend. The film has now grossed $402.9 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $615.1 million.

Sherlock Holmes debuted at #2 with $65.3 million with a per theater average of $18,031. The debut was good for the fifth biggest December opening ever (I Am Legend remains #1 with $77.2 million, followed by Avatar with $77 million). The film earned $24.7 million on Christmas Day, a new record. The debut is also the second biggest debut ever to not land in the #1 spot, behind The Day After Tomorrow which earned $68.7 million but also debuted at #2.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel debuted at #3 with $50.2 million.

It's Complicated debuted at #4 with $22.1 million.

Up In The Air moved up three spots to #8 in its fourth weekend, earning $11.75 million to raise its total gross to $24.5 million. The film had a $25 million budget.

The Blind Side fell three spots to #6 in its sixth weekend, earning $11.73 million to raise its total gross to $184.3 million. The film had a budget of $29 million.

The Princess and the Frog fell five spots to #7 in its fifth weekend, earning $8.6 million to raise its total gross to $63.3 million. The film had a budget of $105 million.

Nine expanded and shot up 12 spots to #8 with $5.5 million, raising its two week total to $5.9 million. The film had a budget of $80 million.

Did You Hear About The Morgans? fell five spots to #9 with $5 million, raising its two week total to $15.5 million. The film had a budget of $58 million.

Invictus fell four spots to #10 in its third weekend, earning $4.3 million to raise its total gross to $23.3 million. The film had a budget of $60 million.

Think of how much more money Hollywood could have earned without file sharing. :)

Re: File Sharing

That's why James Cameron is a genius. Unless you see Avatar in a 3D theater, you haven't really seen it. He's not getting fucked out of dollars because you can't replicate the experience you would get in the theater up to its maximum potential.

So where are you people? The geeks who were drooling over that Avatar would fail?

You do realise that Cameron is the king of box office and knows excatly what attracts the biggest audience?

I know i know, you were hoping this movie would make 40 million in total and ruin Cameron and his crew, oh well, at least you can go back to hating Twilight again.

**************
The over-the-top budgets for "Did You Hear About the Morgans" & "Invictus" are probably for the stars' salaries.

Butters4Prez: Ugh, fucking American public. "Oooo, big shiny colors, me go watch". Morons.

Article: The film has now grossed $402.9 million overseas

Conclusion: Either people overseas are more dumber then Americans or you fail at reading.

"A rather stupid comment as clearly lots of folk around the world are going to this movie. "

Agreed. But expand the comment to include the majority of people in general and it is still apt.
