[TV] Conan Spends NBC's Money Until The End
Posted by Chris Lansdell on 01.24.2010

Conan O'Brien continued to spend lots of NBC's money right up to the end of his run on the network. The Roots drummer Questlove, who is also the house band leader for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, said that NBC paid out $500,000 for Tom Hanks to come out to Lovely Rita by the Beatles. According to Questlove's Twitter:

"yo i hate spoiling but i will have you know that walk on song we just heard was half a milli. i know cause i got the list rate at nbc… anytime you use the beatles on tv that will cost you dearly."

No word yet on how much it cost them to cover Freebird.

Maybe when Conan came out they should have played "She's Leaving Home" or "The End"...?

there is always the off chance that Paul McCartney gives Tom Hanks a discount rate. If I was McCartney I would.

lol conan is awesome. I would spend it too, ha ha, Payback time

If this is true, I find it disgusting. There are people who are losing
their jobs, families not being able to pay for
their mortgage or food, but some people can waste half a million dollars for an actor to walk out as a background song that lasts for a mere 20 seconds....truly disgusting

Posted By: Diddy (Guest)  on January 24, 2010 at 02:17 PM

why the fuck would anyone ever use the beatles on tv.

Posted By: Guest#6571 (Guest)  on January 24, 2010 at 02:29 PM

The Beatles are overrated and not worth a dollar, much less half a million. Figures a douche like Conan would do such a thing.

This should Teach NBC Not to Screw around and go back on their word and make even MORE stupid Decisions and then Blame their failures on anyone but themselves!

People Losing their Jobs? Sorry NBC, YOUR FAULT Not Conan's

They shouldn't have tanked the show's ratings and hence advertisement dollars along with him. L0L

Ya whatever. Take it up with Paul, Ringo, and the RIAA. After you explain how said money exchanging hands has anything to do with people losing their jobs.

Its not a bit with music, that's licensing. They have to buy the right to play the music they use. As for people are losing their jobs, what a waste of money, do you think NBC would give that money to them? Do you think Conan has a way he could just go "here you go, have some money". He's using the money that would otherwise go into NBC's coffers for profit. There is no way a for profit business would just give it away.

No the comedy bits of spraying an original Picasso with caviar are fake....using music on a television show takes money...and plenty of it

I think you're missing the point. NBC/Universal and GE are actually contributing very heavily to putting people out of work. Conan's costing them 500,000 bucks is more like Robin Hood type of act rather than wasting a lot of money.

Posted By: Guest#0184 (Guest)  on January 24, 2010 at 05:26 PM

If any of you assclowns actually sat down and watched the final Conan show you would have heard him explain that all the spending was a GAG and wasn't real.

Posted By: BrutalMania (Guest)  on January 24, 2010 at 05:31 PM

Gee, it's not like the 200 people Conan put out of work could have used that money.

Posted By: Guest#2393 (Guest)  on January 24, 2010 at 05:39 PM

you dont have to pay to cover a song

OK, think about this: you get promoted and then a few months later the guy that used to have the job and your bosses decide he should have it back, even though you're just settling in. It's sick and disturbing that this could happen at all, but at least Conan has the advantage of being able to have some measure of revenge on broadcast television.

Most people would probably just get a small severance and a "nice knowin' ya."

There was an article about the music. NBC has an agreement, like the other networks that they can play the music one live TV or tape delayed. However if they put the clips online or replay the show they would then have to pay extra which was est at around 50 000$ per song.

"There are people who are losing
their jobs, families not being able to pay for
their mortgage or food,"

And among those unemployed folks who found out that Tom Hanks' entrance cost $500,000, not one is hollering, "Hey, that's money that NBC could have given to me!"

Honest to Christ, is ANY money spent on TV at the moment appropriate? I can't believe "Wheel of Fortune" pays people $3000 for requesting the letter S when we're not able to pay our mortgages! I can't believe "30 Rock" is sneaking in dirty puns about Lemon Parties when we're unemployed! I can't believe the fortune that Fox's Sunday night line-up wastes on ink, paper, and valuable software when we're not able to blah blah blah...

Conan O'Brien's job is to use the money and resources of a major corporation to entertain people who want to forget about their troubles for an hour a night. Friday night, he did exactly that.

What's your favorite band, Beatles haters? Let me know what kind of a following they have after 50 years.

Right. Because of course, NBC was certainly planning on donating all of that money to charitable organizations to help the needy and unemployed.

You have to realize something trolls, the employees of Conan is getting paid thanks to Conan. The supposedly, that's 500,000 NBC could have given to me arguement is flawed and not valid. Had Conan not done this, NBC would have just kept the money. They wouldn't have spent a single cent on the people that THEY are kicking out of a job.

You might not love The Beatles but to say they suck basically labels you as a fucking retard. How goddamn dumb are some of you?
