[Movies] Christopher Nolan To Mentor A New Superman Movie?
Posted by Larry Csonka on 02.09.2010
In Nolan we trust?
It is being reported that Warner Bros. is turning to Christopher Nolan to mentor the newest version of Superman. The feeling at Warner Bros. is that Nolan is a God, and that he is the man to get the film off on the right track in the eyes of fans and critics alike. Nolan's role has not been specified, just that they want him to get the franchise going in the right direction.
Superman Returns wasn't seen as a hit by the studio, due to the film costing $270 million, and the worldwide gross coming in at $391 million. Various names have been rumored to take over the franchise in the past, including Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass), Brett Ratner and McG. Before Bryan Singer took over the franchise, several versions of Superman were in development, including a version starring Nicolas Cage to be directed by Tim Burton based on a screenplay by Kevin Smith. JJ Abrams also wrote a script.
The latest version of Superman is in the early stages of development, and will be a completely fresh franchise. The film is looked at as a huge test for Warner Bros veteran executive Diane Nelson, now the head of DC Entertainment Inc. DC Entertainment Inc. was founded in order to fully realize the value of the DC Comics brand and characters. The Superman franchise is looked at as too valuable to leave dormant. Plus the clock is ticking, as in 2013, the Jerome Siegel heirs and the estate of co-creator Joe Shuster will own the entire original copyright to Superman. At that point, neither DC Comics nor Warner Bros will be able to exploit any new Superman works without a license from the Siegels and Shusters.
Ironic. WB has been all about making this gritty and dark to ape the success of The Dark Knight. Nolan would probably be the first one to slap them and say SUPERMAN ISN'T DARK.

Sounds awesome. I just hope he doesn't go for the first guy to suck him off to play Superman like Singer did.

They really should let Singer take another shot at it with a direct sequel to Superman Returns. Now that the characters are setup he can really put more action into like he did with X2. And if they really wanted to they could run with a Doomsday/Superman's Death story with the sequel and then take the franchise in a Superboy direction with Superman's son which is already set up.
Just saying...Superman Returns was a really well made picture just light on action, I think Singer would make sure that action was there for a sequel. They are making a mistake I believe.

Actually Superman Returns cost over $500 mil. They had to pay off Cage and Burton.
Nolan is God.

He's overrated.

Face facts:
Superman is overrated as a character.
Most of america could care less about superman.
Spiderman is cooler, better and much more AWESOME tha superman. Ironman is cooler badder, more marketable tahn superman.
Superman movies are boring because DC is too boring in their storytellin of a character.
that' just the r-truth.
what's up?

Superman Returns pulled in a $121 million dollar profit, and that's considered a failure. Hmm.
Just do the damn Smallville movie already.

WB is right. Nolan is a God.

Don't have Lex Luthor be the main villain, I'm sick of that story line. Have someone who can go toe to toe with Superman. Also no superpowered illegitimate children and a Lois Lane who isn't anorexic.

They should hire someone to make a piece of s^%3 movie to devalue the franchise like Batman and Robin or Superman 3; then they can buy the rights back cheap.

Poor Nolan, so much rides on his shoulders.

Actually, Burton brought his own writers on board after Smith. Smith was brought on as writer, but no director was attached. Then Burton was assigned and Smith got booted off. Smith tells the whole story. Search Kevin Smith Superman on YouTube.
As far as the names listed?
Brett Ratner: No.
McG: NO.
Mark Millar: NO! Hell no.
Also, someone please tell WB, Nolan or whoever needs to be told that Superman is not a dark character like Batman. Not every movie needs to be dark.

Check out the first Evening with Kevin Smith DVD. Hilarious story on his writing of the script. Three rules: don't wanna see him fly, don't wanna see him in the suit (too faggy), and in the third act he has to fight a giant spider.

Here are a few hints froma self professed comic geek:
1. Fans don't want to see Superman vs bank robbers, superman rescuing a chick in her car thats out of control or Superman rescuing a cat from a tree or Superman vs the island. We want to see Superman THROWING DOWN with a villain who can go punch for punch with him. Before someone screams "Oh but he's too powerful! There isn't anyone that can stand up to him!" Silence. There are several DC villains who can fit this bill. Mongul, Metallo, Braniac, Luthor is his fancy armor, Darkseid and several others. Just do an invasion story of some sort. It can be Braniac, Mongul, Darkseid or just about any DC cosmic baddie with legions ofe vil doers. (There are lireally hundreds of them) have Superman wipe out the invading forces and then finally go mano y mano with said cosmic baddie and let them tear down a few cities in the process. Hell, get Michael Bay to direct and i guarantee at least teh fight scenes would be satisfying.

Fuck...Nic Cage as Superman?!!!! What the fuck?!! He is a horrible actor...I can't stand the dude... and he is absolutely NOT the right pick to ever,EVER be Superman! He's balding, ugly, and... dang, I honestly cannot elaborate how glad I am that those plans were scraped. Superman Returns may have sucked...but I guarantee it would have sucked a hell of a lot more with that motherfucker as a Superman. haha

I liked Superman returns and thought a sequel with Singer and the same cast could be interesting. Don't know about anyone else but I am getting tired of all these re-boots.

Nolan is great, but are they really THAT desperate for creative talent that they keep throwing around the same 3 or 4 names to help them out with their franchise? Hell, it seems like you have a few million internet fanboys alone who seem to have some idea of what to do.
Posted By: Guest#6965 (Guest) on February 09, 2010 at 06:01 PM
Nolan sucks! The ending of The Dark Knight sucked!

..and Chuck Norris.
Do the damn "Death of Superman" movie and get it over with. It could easily be done in two parts.

People who say Supes is boring are boring themselves, all they'll rely on is grimdark, grimdark, grimdark (yawn)

I think you guys misunderstand what a “dark” Superman means. You can do a dark Superman story without making it Batman dark. Go ahead and ask any comic fan what were the best Superman stories it’s usually the darker ones like his death/return with Doomsday, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, What’s So Funny About Truth Justice and the American Way, Kingdom Come, etc.
In fact, I’d encourage them to do a dark Superman story, since doing lighter stories don’t seem to work now for some reason.

Superman Returns wasn't great but it sure as hell is better than goddamn Nic "Horse Face" Cage and Tim "Off the Wall, Weird Gothic Shit Kinds of Stuff in All His Films" Burton. That just sounds like a shitty joke and not something that was actually being considered.

Braniac is the best choice. He's as strong as Superman and can also have an army of disposable robots for Supes to smash. And it can lead into a Bottle City of Kandor sequal which gives a whole city of superpowered Kryptonians. Casting will be the biggest trick.
