UPDATED: [Movies] Ryan Phillippe and Channing Tatum In The Running For Captain America Posted by Larry Csonka on 03.15.2010
The rumors continue…
Update: Add another name to the Captain America mix, as Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) has reportedly been approached by Marvel. He joins the names mentioned below in the running for the high-profile part.
Original:It is being reported that Ryan Phillippe (Crash, Cruel Intentions) is the latest name rumored for the role of Captain America. Last week it was reported that John Krasinski (Jim from The Office) was out of the running, and that Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, Poseidon), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), and Wilson Bethel (NCIS, The Young and The Restless) were still in the running.
Out of the names mentioned above, who would be the best Captain America?

Chris Evans

Give the role to Daniel Craig (doubt he would do it) or Bradley Cooper (as much as I hate to say it)and as for Red Skull... Christoph Waltz and nobody else.

Personally, I'm pulling for Matt Salinger. The dark horse, storming the horizon.

All too young! He should be grizzled, even though he's a Super Soldier this is going to be a battle-hardened WWII veteran who is probably going to be over 100 years old when the Avengers Movie rolls round. How about pulling out all the stops for a Clive Owen or a Brad Pitt?

At this point i dont even care... JUST MAKE THE MOVIE!

whoever it is has to be able to be a good enough actor to not be dominated while on screen with Norton and Downey Jr. If they aren't going to bring in an A-lister for the part, and we are under the assumption that it is one of the mentioned names, then it has to be phillippe or Evans.

This is terrible. This Mike Vogel guy isn't so bad as far as I can tell, but Garrett Hedlund and whoever Wilson Bethel is are only 24, Chris Evans was already the Human Torch (and the only the only thing people really know him as and the Human Torch was just comic relief) and Ryan Phillipe is about 145 pounds soaking wet.
Cast Matt Damon and get it over with. He's perfect. Or that guy from Supernatural didn't seem so bad.
A 24-year old whose acting credits really are a soap opera and one episode of NCIS (don't believe me - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1569067/) will look like a total douche not only sharing the screen with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr., but being able to LEAD them believably (with Robert Downey Jr. anyway).
And btw, IMDB still has John Krasinski listed as "rumored" if that means anything.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0458339/
And Ryan Phillippe looks like Justin Timberlake. Automatic veto.

John Cena. Ftw.

I don't see Christoph Waltz for Red Skull. While he was great in Inglorious Basterds, he basically played an over-the-top cartoon character. Raph Fiennes in Schindler's List is more what the Red Skull should be. Cold, calculating, and pure evil.

Among the things they should consider for this choice they really have to think about the fact that this Captain America is supposed to lead the Avengers, Iron Man is supposed to follow this guy in the movie, I wouldn't buy a teen looking guy kinda giving orders to the charismatic Robert Downey Jr. especially cause RDJ could look as the dad of a too young Cap. This Cap has to be a really good actor and has to look the part, something that can't be said for so many of the names that have been rumoured so far.

My vote is for Brock Samson!

Chris Klein. He was awesome in Street Fighter: The Legend of Charlie Nash.

Brad Pitt ca. Troy woulda been perfect- Jensen Ackles of Supernatural would be a good compromise. Ryan McPartlin (Captain Awesome from Chuck) would be great... Daniel Craig would be great if not ironic (if they do a Captain Britain cameo he would be AMAZING) i could stomach Phillippe, but thats about it... all the others would be a complete travesty... even Chris Evans- the guy couldn't carry a film as the lead actor, much less a franchise. As far as Red Skull, Waltz would be fine- but Hugo Weaving would make him terrifying.

Seriously why is Patrick Warburton's name on the top of this list?
Posted By: Showster (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 06:13 PM
I don't know why it's so hard to find a good fit/actor for the role of Captian America. All of the people listed besides Phillippe are way to young/don't have the look/or acting talent.
Like I have been saying over and over again the perfect Captian America is Matt Damon. If he doesn't want the role I think Chris Pine would also be a real good fit, even if he's a little on the young side.John Cena would be another near perfect fit for the role if he had any acting talent which he doesn't.
I real want to know who's going to play Bucky ?

Bradley Cooper would indeed be a good choice... or at least a more believable one compared to these dudes

For everyone complaining about Ryan Phillippe as C.A....remember how terrible of an idea it was for pretty boy Heath Ledger to play the Joker?
Hmm...wonder how that role turned out...
Posted By: Guest#4553 (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 06:22 PM
Ryan is 5'8 at best, most likely smaller. He's just not big enough. Bradley Cooper would probably be ideal.
Posted By: J (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 06:34 PM
American-born, blonde hair, blue eyes, muscular build, mid-30s. Satisfy those 5 criteria, and the rest doesn't really matter. Captain America is, first and foremost, an image.
Posted By: Phoenix10k (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 06:36 PM
Kurt Angle

I agree, whoever is eventually cast needs to be able to hold his own against Norton and Downey JR....not some soap opera weakling.Phillippe just doesnt seem Capt America to me..I liked the idea of Sam Worthington or Matt Damon

Ryan was pretty damn good in Crash, and considering the company (Shaun Toub, Thandie Newton, Terrence Howard, Matt Dillon, Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, William Fichtner, Loretta Divine, Larenz Tate, Keith David, Brendan Fraser, and yes, even Ludacris,) I'd say he's nothing to sneeze at.

JACK FUCKING BAUER
Posted By: RyanMacP (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 07:50 PM
Phillippe won't get it. He's 35 and they are looking for a much younger guy to play C.A. Plus whoever gets the role will sign on for 9 films so there's no way he will get it.

Randy Couture.

this and its not even close

This role takes a man, and of this list, Ryan is the only choice. The rest look like boys next to him. He's the right age, the right build, and he has the acting chops. Make it happen.

He'd be better as US Agent.

Ryan Phillipe? Vanilla midget couldn't pull it off.

Marc Blucas
In shape, in his 30s, 6'2" (CA's height according to Marvel Directory), has played a handful of military-centric roles. Decent actor, not a huge name, but can hold his own. Why not him?

............who?
Posted By: Guest#7570 (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 10:26 PM
I think they should just get some beef dude and green screen Corey Haim's face onto him.
Posted By: Charlie Sheen (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 10:35 PM
Chris Pine or Sam Worthington. It really is not that hard.
Posted By: JM (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 10:38 PM
This just gets worse and worse. CHANNING TATUM???!!! Are you kidding me?? Maybe if I wanted Captain America to talk like a wigger!! Why not just get Mark Wahlberg and tell him to talk like he did when he was Marky Mark? No, better yet, just hire Vanilla Ice! Why stop there? Eminem is all-american with the thuggin and buggin talk...he should be Captain America!! I hate Hollywood producers! I wish this would get turned over to an independent company with a small budget and a no-names cast.

WTF about me? gettin jiggy wit it nananananana

But lets remember The Joker is not the most athletic and greatest leader in the world. Also Marvel is staying truer to comic roots so really Ryan Phillippe doesn't work with putting a spin on C.A.

Ok... Nerd Time here.
Stere Rogers born July 4th, 1917. He tried to join the Army in 1939 when he was 22, after hearing Canada had joined the War effort. He was ranked 4F. Unfit for Duty. He underwent Project Rebirth after that, and was active overseas well before America officially joined the war. He served in the War until 2 weeks after Hitler's Death in April 1945.
This put's Captain America's age range at about 28 years old. Add a couple years of weathering, or stress from dealing with the horrors of war, and anybody in the 30 to 35 year range will work fine. There. End of discussion.

I will stick with Brad Cooper since the last time I posted and thought about it awhile and came up with nothing else... Plus, many of you seem to feel he would fit as well... He is Hollywood's guilty pleasure so it kind of tarnishes it but, probably help box office sales. Draw women in.
Still lost on Red Skull thou. I want to say Billy Zane if he got in a bit better shape. Zane will always be a person I would like to see. I would help him always for his job with Phantom.

For Red Skull, I think it should be
Jeffrey Donovan from Burn Notice.

HAHA Channing Tatum is like the worst actor ever and he's going to share the screen in a leadership role with Robert Downey JR? please.
Posted By: JWS (Guest) on March 16, 2010 at 04:55 AM
jensen Ackles
Posted By: Guest#0271 (Guest) on March 16, 2010 at 10:21 AM
Matt Damon!!!
Posted By: Dave (Guest) on March 16, 2010 at 12:40 PM
Thank You Captain Canada for the timeline.
When the movie starts Cap is 22!!! And for The Avengers he'll be near 30!!!
So please enough with the name like Pitt, Damon, Craig, etc...
The actor needs to carry the screen with RDJ & SLJ, but he has to be young too.

Will Smith only.
Posted By: Guest#1334 (Guest) on March 16, 2010 at 02:47 PM
Ted Dibiase Jr.
